DRDO’s ATAGS or Israeli’s ATHOS : What would be the best option for Indian Army ?

  • We have done the comparison of both these artilleries which we will be discussing now.
The DRDO’s ATAG is a 155 mm and 52 caliber artillery gun and the ATHOS is having the same specification, which means they are exactly same in terms of their fire power and caliber.
Now, we will take about their firing rates. The artillery guns Can be fired in Burst Mode, Intense Mode and Sustained Mode.
In burst mode, the rate of fire for ATAGS is 6 rounds in 30 seconds and that of ATHOS is 3 rounds in 30 seconds. Clearly DRDO’s ATAG’s has double the fire power in burst mode, which can literally stun the adversary.
In intense mode, the rate of fire for ATAGS is 15 rounds in 3 mins and that of ATHOS is 12 rounds in 3 mins. Here again the DROD’s ATAGS is winner.
In sustained mode, the rate of fire for ATAGS is 60 rounds in 1hr and that of ATHOS is 42 rounds in 1hr. Here again the DROD’s ATAGS is winner by heavy margin.
Now that we have compared the operation of both the artilleries in different mode, its quite evident, DRDO’s ATAG is way ahead of ATHOS when it comes to fire power.
Now let’s talk about their range. ATHOS has a maximum range of 40KMs and same is being reported of DRDO’s ATAGs. However, back in 2017, during a trial, it broke the world record for 15mm gun by firing to a distance of 47.2KMs. It again broke this record by registering a firing distance of 48.074KMs with high explosive-base bleed (HE-BB) ammunition.
Again, we can confidently say that DRDO’s ATAGS is going to have better range than Elbit’s ATHOS.
Talking about the weight, both of these guns have same weight of 18 T.
Last but not the least, if we compare their cost, DRDO’s ATAGS cost around Rs 16-18 crore per piece and the cost of Elbit’s ATHOS is Rs 11 crore. Here ATHOS is appearing as cheaper option.
However, DRDO’s ATAGS comes up with impressive fire power and range. One more unique feature of ATAGS is that it can fire future Long Range Guided Munitions that increase lethality and tactical proficiency in the battle space.
But if we look at the offer by Israel’s Elbit system, its actually turning out to be a completely indigenous gun. Israel is offering 400 guns with 70% indigenous components and full TOT for the remaining 1180 guns. They are also ready to supply the guns ahead of the contract schedule.
The first 6 guns will be delivered in 10monts from the day of contract signing and additional 6 six guns in next 14 months. The remaining guns will be delivered in just 54 months instead of 72 months as drafted in RFP.
Israeli Elbit system has a joint venture (JV) with Indian firm Bharat Forge. The technology and design will be fully transferred to the JV and OFB for the mass production of ATHOS in India. Another interesting fact is that Bharat Forge is also involved with the DRDO’s ATGS development along with the Tata Group.
Now, that we have discussed in detail about both the guns, I would like to know from our viewers, what would be the best option for Indian Army? Israeli’s ATHOS or DRDO’s ATAGS. Do not forget to give your opinion in the comment section.

@@whackydduck5960 how can u take prototype cost to actual product price as we know prototype have a great price because it is not made in a good number to reduce its price and we can use change some parts and material to reduce costs and with research and development it will not effect the gun accuracy or life.

India is in immense financial crisis its not a good idea to buy equipment s from foriegn country spending over dollar reserves.. and we already achieved the technology with atags why we need TOT ... Purchase 400 athos ..and rest should be atags .... If drdo can make something beter than athos the they can also downgrade it a bit to control the price.. and the money mostly stays in the indian economy

India has to go in for ATAGS hands down.
After spending crores of public money in R&D, getting our own expertise in design, development and manufacturing a complex weapon system it would be a nip in the bud for the enthusiasm of our young & energetic scientists. After years, we have painstakingly reached a tech level were we can boast to match the best in the world but if we absorb the tech of others our own capabilities and confidence will be shaken. Nobody would put any effort to carry out further research in this field. At that time I wouldn’t expect any other country/company to come forth and offer us the best tech at cheap price and with ToT......remember the case of our indigenous missile and rocket tech......

As you say that in Bust mode AGATS can fire 6 round in 30 second, and ATHOS can only fire 3 round in 30 second...
It means that one ATAGS can fire round equivalent to 2 ATHOS

Indian army seniors have the mentality that the foreign is better. Indian army should only buys ATAG even if it is a little expensive, cuz it's an Indian technology and 100% indeginous rather than 75% of ATHOS.

I am Not Against ATAGS, Nor I am Discouraging and Even there is Absolutely No Doubt about the Desh Vakti, and Supporting Indian Products and Made in India But want to say something that Before we Decide, we Have to Look For An Armies, Listen Them and Their Requirements, Their Demand, Have to Take Care about them, and Have to Think that The Best Technology and the Durability that they Get, Have to Think that the Machines Should Last for Long Time, We Dont Have to Fall in the Pressure of Government.
So What I wanted to say is that, that You Lied Over the Weight in Between Them and You Didn't tell Something More things about the ATHOS That ATHOS has More Advanced Modern Features than the ATAGS and Advantages.
ATHOS Is 15 Tons Lighter than the ATAGS, And This Weight is Very Crucial for the Indian Army in the Himalayan Areas, Mountainous Areas to Carry and Move Howitzer.
But To Carrying Heavy and Moving Heavy ATAGS is Very Distressing, Dangerous And More Time Wasting in Himalayan and Mountains Areas,
The Indian Roads will Not Been Able to Hold That Too Much Heavy Weight, it will Make More Problematic and Create Tensions During The War or Any Other Eventuallity and Hostility From the Hostile Neighbour.
Last, By taking their Modern Technology, we are able to know More Knowhow and DRDO been able to Build More Advanced Modern Howitzer Bofors Gun in Future. sfbeng 🙏🏻💐💐

Wrong information... using same ammunition ATAGS range is 41 KM and Athos is 40 km ..Do not spread wrong information. Price 11 crore vs 17 crore. Athos's quality is better and 3 ton lighter.

We got no need to acquire athos after spending so much on R&D

Indian army should buy both guns 400 Athos plus 1400 Atags.
Raising more battalion s of artillery because and looking into delivery time also indigenised improvement and immediate requirements.
This will help in economic and urgent needs.
Also Bharat forge will stand up as indian industry to export these in future to other countries.

So, do we depend on foreign technology forever. How do you expect atags to prove when we dont give it a chance. Plus, atgs has already proven to be good in testing. Lets give a shot, relying too much on foreign weapons may backfire us one day.
