  • NEW DELHI: Nearly three years ago, India appointed Gen. Bipin Rawat as its first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). One of the key targets was to bring about jointness among the three services to ensure optimal use of resources. Gen. Rawat had set out his priorities and was working towards them till he died in an air crash a year ago. After a long wait, the government appointed Gen. Anil Chauhan as his successor a couple of months ago. He too has hit the ground running, holding several rounds of meetings with the top brass of the three services. So where exactly is the military now on the road to theaterisation? In this episode of ‘Ask Nitin’, StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale explains.

    Nitin this topic needs more depth and discussion. Theatre commands is a concept needs a mindset change and long term strategic vision coz there is resistance within forces.

    NG - Can you do an episode talking about the efficacy of IAF's Sukhoi fleet? While some of the other IAF workhorses like Mirage have been visible in operations, Sukhoi has not been. Does that plane have a separate purpose or there is some other reason behind this?

    I hope you can shed some light on the curious spread of drone technologies across countries. It is intriguing that Russia which has hypersonic weapons, lacks drones while Iran is able to with even canadian parts, Turkey is with Bayraktar in production. Pls see this question as a lacuna in already theaterised Russian armed forces, or in the concept of theaterisation

    Dear Mr Nitin, I could not see your
    scheduled programme live slated for 7,pm.
    Earlier we have made some communications when I made my comments for your programmes
    which never touched the plights of Indian poor fishermen( for which you immediately responded by stating" you seemed to have already said this.."
    The programmed live video which was to be aired yesterday, when searched, showed so many live videos not one that interested me as none of them included any useful and serious matters that you and i knew and communicated. I am ready to subscribe and encourage you for your ventures if it is worthy. Otherwise I will not see any of your shows past, present and future. With regrets and serious concern, R. S. Vijayan.

    Theatre Commands would be too unwieldly. What were the reasons given for raising South Western Command reducing the area of
    responsibility of Western Command. That case should be revisited.
    Next, role of airpower needs to be understood before placing air assets in each theatre.
    CDS has been given routine tasks as secretary of department of military affairs such as issuance of letters of condolences on behalf of the Raksha Mantri and other prosaic issues.
    CDS should be involved with advising the government on military strategy which should be an important input for the national strategy among other major tasks

    Good talk, Nitin 👍
    What is our status re cyber ability.
    Do we have the ability to hack into enemy systems, military/non military?
    To effectively deter the enemy's cyber attacks?
    To quickly launch cyber psychological attacks, quickly build narratives?
    Cyber/computers come naturally to a young, mentally agile person, do we have or we in the process of building up such force?
    Plz do respond.

    Indian Army doesn’t have culture of learning. The “study leave” should be split for officers in 2 periods. One between the age of 28-35(for 1 year) focusing on MBA/Tech(this helps with civil jobs as well as improving tech/administration skills in the army) and the second on between 50-55(one day per week type of course).
    Right now everyone in the army uses their study leave to get more vacations. And what is the issue with army not giving their entitled vacations to soldiers. Why is army so dumb in using ERT tools to manage their employees. Even smaller private companies uses that. Please give the officers and jawans enough vacation to help them improve their stress and mental health.

    • @gol43oin1
      @gol43oin1 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you availed the study leave ? What you suggest is ludicrous and you need to get your brain examined. Why should a 30 something officer need to look at post retirement employability and even then what would some one year certificate course give him ? A certificate and no employability enhancement. And this one day per week thing....seriously?

    • @Contractor48
      @Contractor48 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gol43oin1my father and cousin are in the army. I am not dumb enough to join army where we have no career growth.
      I have studied in the US and your statement tells me that
      1. You have never left India for study outside
      2. You have never done anything more than undergrad.
      3. You think study means spoon feeding.
      That's why the skill level in India is so limited. There is no learning culture
      Did you know that officers main job in the army is to manage their unit? They have no experience in administration or tech thrust into these jobs. Tax your brain once a while and think how well they could do if they get an MBA or some tech courses designed for them. The US army has that system. I had done my masters in information management and the US officer who was 40 joined that course so he could join the US intelligence service.
      One day per week course is enough for learning that is when you do higher study. Not sure I will get through a person who thinks study means spoon feeding.
