These athletes have been honing their reflexes and reaction time to the point that a single flashlight is enough to disturb their focused state. Those who say they're overreacting are people who hasn't done anything that requires focus. Even when you are talking and someone suddenly interrupts, aside from getting annoyed you sometimes forget what you were going to talk about and it's pretty frustrating really.

    1) The Nishimoto block.
Completely ridiculous. He was so far back from the net and you’re allowed to make reasonable movements and preparations to receive the shot. The referee is just being absurd.
    2) The Ginting kill.
Looks like they missed a net touch, but realistically no human eye in real time will be able to discern whether the shuttle is a millimetre either one side or the other of the net. Unless some sort of net-call technology is introduced into the head of the shuttlecock (which I don’t think will be cost feasible) I can’t see this resolved easily. Maybe a benefit of doubt system favouring the referee but ruling out obvious errors and missed net touches.
    3) The Flashlight.
Oof. Clearly Tanjung shouldn’t have stopped midpoint - you have to halt before the point begins, unless there’s a catastrophic interruption of course which the referee calls let for. The main issue is having enough stewards to reprimand the offenders. It was a kid in this case but nevertheless an official rebuke and temporary kick out of the hall for him and his dad would have been appropriate earlier on to prevent such a horrible end to the match. Only way of teaching the kid/parent.

    1) Use hawk eye to assist match Referee in this decision. 2) Players can have 1 or 2 reviews per game and Referee themselves unlimited. 2) As long as the racquet does not touch the net or crosses the net it should not be construed as an obstruction. The Referees may refer to the slow motion replays or hawk eye. 3) Any person in crowd uses flash light or other forms of nuisance to the players or the match should be evicted and the players should be allowed to replay the point (upon referee reviewing that the disturbance interfered with the player)

    • @Chakotay97
      @Chakotay97 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      1) Hawk-eyes use-fullness in this is questionable, but use of slow speed cameras at the net.
      2) These could be good, but they have downsides. They would allow more time wasting as they could be used in situations that don’t really need it in order to get a break, break opponent flow etc. The BWF is working hard to speed games up and this would probably go against it. Also these are still rare and very rarely determine a match. Take into account the number of matches at the All England for example.
      2) The rules could be made clearer but that doesn’t mean that umpire’s are unfair or incompetent. They have a split second to make a decision, most people couldn’t do the job. The rules allow for you to finish your swing on the other side of the court if the contact is on your own side, but obstructing this movement or making it harder is a fault. Although generally it shouldn’t be called in my opinion if the rackets don’t make contact.
      3) Replaying the point isn’t always a good idea. There could be people in who are paid to disturb the match in favour of a player etc. Also evicting viewers can bring a lot of bad press on you. Should we then ban drums or shouting when smashing etc. since they could disturb some players even when used during breaks or maybe just ban viewers all together from the venue only having livestreams as an option. Having referees review events could also take significant amounts of time and isn’t in most cases realistic.
Rules cannot be written too specific and will always require interpretation. Which gets more consistent over time and training which happens at all tournaments. At the beginning, during and end to some extent.
The thing people really need to remember that umpires, players and the BWF all want to see the sport succeed and grow. But saying umpires should be fined or fired because they made a mistake is very harmful for the sport. Umpires are people too and make mistakes and in many cases learn from them. But in a match it isn’t possible to allow all decisions to be questioned, changed or otherwise reviewed because there needs to be some control (as unfair it sometimes seems) of the situations and there are time constraints. Matches can’t last for hours because of debate about rules, calls etc. That kind of attitude creates a versus atmosphere and makes progress or change very hard.

In case of flashlight there are two ways to look at it umpire should have escorted that person out because he was reportedly doing it and was not an one off exception but also at the same time player could have completed really but in this case we can't really blame Tunjung because it happened 2-3 times for her. In case of Nishomoto definitely umpire error imo. :)

Look at it this way, Badminton players spend most, if not all their time and money to Badminton. From training, nutrition, accommodation, equipment, etc. One big way to earn money is by winning tournaments, and even then it's not a lot. Being obstructed would cause you to lose thousands of dollars in prize money.
Now how about, let's see, Basketball and Baseball games. I'm pretty sure plenty of faces appear on jumbotrons and online at 4K quality. This kid's basically the same. Arguably, even at worse quality.

Obstructing a shot or a stroke is pretty well defined and in Nishimoto's case the umpire was just bad. This wasn't at any point a "grey area". There was no obstruction of stroke possible as the players were so far apart from each other. In the Axelsen Ginting case it's very hard ot judge whether the shuttle crossed the net but Ginting clearly was hitting the net with his racket which is illegal.

Human error’s can happen but it absolutely bizzare that there is no appeal or evaluation done to rectify the issue.
There have been some good suggestions in the comments but i guess the match officials/ organiser need to self evaluate that human error can happen and they can atleast listen to the appeal and have a review system in place.
Sometimes, the organizers and match officals look like authoritarian rather than facilitators of a game. It so unfair to make player go out of the court with a feeling of injustice. Which leave’s a bitter feeling in everyone’s mind.

One thing the players dislike is inconsistency and where the umpire has to make a subjective call, we get exactly this - inconsistency. In Nishimoto's case, these net blocks have been played for several years now and I have rarely seen any called a fault even when it appears the rackets have actually clashed. Nishimoto's block was very well played and there is no way he hindered Ginting's stroke - it wasn't even close, so a bad decision by the umpire (probably less experienced on the World Tour?). In Axelsen's case, the umpire has the best view and he has to call what he sees. The players know that in this case the decision cannot be reviewed or challenged. It was unfortunate that it was at a critical stage in the match but that's it. If the shuttle had been allowed to drop and fell on Axelsens side, he would have lost the point anyway. The only way Axelsen could win the point would be if the shuttle dropped onto the net tape and fell on Ginting's side. Bottom line: Ginting played a great dropshot and Axelsen played a poor return so perhaps erring towards Ginting was the right call? With flashlights, the organisers need to have stewards policing this constantly - it happens at all tournaments but is particularly bad where the crowd are in semi darkness. The fans can also "self police" this of course. I don't think the rally should be stopped if a flash goes off as this would break the flow of play. However, I do think it is ok to delay serving/receiving if a flash goes off.

    1. It was not an obstruction. Umpire at fault.
    2. The Umpire made a difficult call considering how we see it in slow motion and can argue for both sides. Umpire not at fault, just unfortunate for Axelson.
    3. You should never pause a rally no matter what. The best thing that can be done is to remove the person who used a flashlight from the premise. Umpire not at fault, Tunjung was just unfortunately unlucky here.

Very strange n Sad to see players getting affected by the cellphone/mobile lights. Need some rules to be implemented so that Umpires can take the decision on the court.

The ammount of hardwork that the players put in is insane ... and they get repayed by the audience with some random flashlight ... not fair. In tunjung's case , the umpire atleast could replay the point

It's clearly disturbing. I think the BWF should not allow people to use cameras during the game, especially right in front of each player on both sides.

An umpire's decision should always be overturned if video footage proves it to be wrong. Letting them have the final call just screams corruption.

I think what they should do is before every match starts is say to the audience members to turn off all flashlights and flash photography so it wouldn't distrupt the game.

not only these, those crowds that 'hiak', 'hiak', 'hiak' on every shots that certain players are about to hit are damn irritating as well.. they are killing an otherwise exciting game & should be escorted out too. offenders should be recorded & ban from entering such events for 2 years as each game/location is played once a year.

One thing we have to mention here is the incorrection of the lines judges in AE 2024 this year,. I have not seen any tournaments that players had so many successful challanges in this tournament. Maybe the gray color of the carpets this year makes it more difficult for the judges to observe,... but i think the judges and the umpires have not done well their jobs in this tournaments ( Sorry if i have any mistakes in my english )

Yes from what it seems even if the shuttle was on AS Ginting's side, the racket most probably definitely touched the net as if you see the footage in slow mo, the net does move as well. The fact this was 18 all in the deciding game of the QF is too serious. What should be done is players should have 2 reviews as well (just like challenges) and the umpire should watch a replay closely and then remake the decision or something.

  • @xaviercross8951

this players have their whole focus on the the shuttlecock of course it would be a great distraction for them. as to why people who take pictures should be advised to turn off their flash as the court is well lit and a small flash from your cellphone camera does not have any affect on the image but greatly affect the players.

I was watching the semi finals in the stadium and there were many occasions where players complaining about the flash lights. But no any security or umpire obstruct the culprits who often use the flashlights even after the announcement regularly not to use any flashlights. Actually it was just one or two people who sit opposite side use flash lights with intension.

These umpires should be penalized for wrongful ruling/decisions. As they are strict on players, they should impose the same strict rulings to the audience as well. Smh
