Problem is, you can put barriers down, like the Paris Roubaix, the problem is they are too close to the road and people leaning over are then interfering. Barriers should always be a half meter back from the roadway.
At least part of the Paris-Roubaix barriers serve another purpose: To force the riders to stay on the road (as some parts of the road in P-R are notoriously worse/more dangerous to ride on than the roadsides), to add to the spectactularity and "heroism" of the race.

In my opinion the tour de france is a global reference for ciclysm so a lot of people are going there just because they are exhibitionists that don't care at all about what really happening but because they want their moment of visibility, resulting in to destroy all of what a noble sport show would be.
This is about making INDIVIDUALS accountable for their actions, whether intended or not. NOTHING will change until individuals encumbering a racing event face the same penalties as other situations such as wreckless driving, pushing old ladies down out of anger, endangering children, endangering animals, etc. etc. etc. This issue exists because we have people & legal systems unwilling to prosecute INDIVIDUALS for selfish, disrespectful, flagrant, dangerous behavior. Accountability, people. Start demanding it! We’re TOO LARGE of a world society to accept anything less.
Western European laws dont work like that mate. We do not punish people severely for mistakes and/or first time offenses. If you want that idiot shit go the americans.
Maybe it's about holding the sport and sporting body accountable... In any other sporting event, it is the responsibility of the organisers/event governing body to make sure the athletes and spectators are safe and spend millions doing so...
It's also a problem in Rally, if people don't understand that you die if you get hit by something that comes at 200 km/h on gravel, do you think it's going to happen in cycling
The trend now is how people behave anywhere, we’ve become such a selfish and self centred society that people can’t behave anywhere. The public is oblivious but the Tour de France organizers are incredible. When they do stages in Belgium (where I worked at national level for 3 stages), Spain, Holland, they have drastic requirements, safety meetings and still check the road 3 times the day before ; not a place without a flagger, policeman or a barrier. And in France, nothing, people on the shoulders, in the ditches and in the middle of the road. For spectacular actions?

Spectators and officials are an important part of any sport, but the line has to be drawn short of their being able to affect outcomes. Race organizers and sanctioning bodies must be held accountable when fans are allowed to encroach and officials or media act in a way that affects the race. That will fix the problem. They'll either provide tighter control or they'll just stop organizing races.
Freedom of movement, freedom of expression and in particular freedom of press are all well and good when there is a built in discipline to behave oneself in people. There is no such built-in mechanism. So people feeling entitled to the mentioned liberties will continue screwing up events (any event for that matter). Will organisers be able to control the crowd? I don't know but take a look at rally sport for comparison, especially the 90's and 00's era. I don't think it got much better since then.
If we stop calling this a sport, and recognize it for what it is--entertainment--then crashes are just part of why the audience watches. Just like NASCAR.

Road cycling should probably learn a lesson or two from WRC rally, which has had issues of it's own with the spectators. The difference is, that in rally lack of crowd control has lead to numerous spectators losing their lives. Barriers cannot be put everywhere, but posts and plastic lines can be put in quite a few locations, as they are cheap, fast and easy to install. Effective route clearing is needed - something similar to how law enforcement might clear a path for a motorcade (lead vehicles far ahead, bikes etc. here and there to keep the spectators out). Publishing maps of prohibited and designated spectator areas might help too. Reckless spectators need to be taken seriously. If everything else fails, officials must have the framework and guts to suspend or cancel a race if spectators are too reckless. Otherwise we'll see more severe injuries, perhaps even loss of life.

The problem is the speed, they are going "so slow" up some of the mountains. They do have lead vehicles like the red skoda at TDF and moto's but because of the speed people just get back on the road after it has been cleared. And they have to leave room in front of the riders for attacks or not give a draft. Just look at pogacar getting blocked on stage 14 or the froome accident.

All spectators that violate the path of a cyclist should be signed up for ‘the running of the bulls’ and apologize to the cyclists that are hindered!
simple solution: make the punishments harsh. On the roadways in America you will see signs that say "hit a worker and get 100,000$ fine and 10 years in prison". You can do something similar for Tour de france to keep people out of their way.
American policing solutions have been proven to be dangerously excessive and have had fairly disastrous social consequences. No one should be taking policing ideas from the USA.

AT the same time, it should be a "Carmagedon" on the roads, daily and cyclist give the most points.
Still doesn't exactly justify harassing or causing injury to the riders, nor is it the smartest thing. "I don't like this event that happens in my town. I know! I'll be a nuisance. Surely I won't slow everyone down at best and cause unnecessary injury/get a blacked eye at worst"

Bottom line, street racing just isn't suitable for the 21st Century.
Especially in the Tour mountain stages this pisses me off so much. People just can't behave and just has to run along, hold out flags or wave right infront of riders. It only takes one person extending too much or not getting back in time and a whole Tour de France championship can change hands
I don't think its feasible for race officials to deal with all of this, so it has to be done by other fans/volunteers. If you are a fan and see theese idiots running by the side, waving flags infront of racers, then pull them to the side and stop it.
La Vuelta did an awesome job this year though, on the most popular climbs there were 100's of cops.

This is about making INDIVIDUALS accountable for their actions, whether intended or not.
NOTHING will change until individuals encumbering a racing event face the same penalties as other situations such as wreckless driving, pushing old ladies down out of anger, endangering children, endangering animals, etc. etc. etc.
