i don't disagree with your ranking, and i'm not defending the story for MGS 5 but the part about the final twist in MGS 5 of there being two Big Bosses it's better explained if you played the original Metal Gear 1 and Metal Gear 2
MGS 4 is still my personal favorite MGS game. But I respect your opinion. I do think that some of the cutscenes were heavy handed, but the epic moments propels why I love the game so much. I also agree with you about David Hayter, Kiefer never felt like Snake.

Metal Gear Solid III to me is not only the best of the series, but also the best game of all time. Only game that may top it is its own upcoming remake.
I actually really liked how you critiqued MGS4. While I definitely love it more than you, every criticism you had makes perfect sense and was explained very well. I came away from that totally understanding why it didn't rank high for you and had me challenging my own views on the game. I don't get why you didn't like the final story act of MGS2, though. That's the pinnacle of that entire story and was beyond fucking genius for me. That part surprised me but overall, I really enjoyed your ranking. Good stuff!
I absolutely LOVE the Metal Gear Solid franchise! I remember when my brother and I would go outside and play pretend and take a trip into the world of Metal Gear. Ahh, the memories... I’ve only played Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2. Sadly, my days of gaming ended with the PS2. Twin daughters kind of got in the way of my gaming.
Even though i can't explain this series at all to someone who's completely unfamiliar, this is absolutely my favorite. 6. Peace Walker- just couldn't get into it. 5. Phantom pain- the "ending" and no David hayter really holds this game back along with the credits under every mission 4. Guns of the Patriots- bloated with cutscenes but the set pieces are the best. The music was probably the best in the series 3. Sons of liberty- one of my first ps2 games. Not as replayable as the first because of the length. Raiden sucked as did rose, but the story ended up being so ahead of its time. 2. Metal gear solid- my most played ps1 game. I could play it blind folded. Even as a kid the story was so fucking dope to me, and as i grew to understand it more, it got even better. This game is the reason i prefer 1 player story driven games 1. Snake eater- perfection.
Not the biggest MG fan. Liked 1 and 2. Struggled with 3 (but finished) and never played the rest, but the passion you have for them is awesome and loved listening to your ranking. I couldn’t agree more with the ranking because Metal Gear Solid was the first game i ever bought and owned for myself. Game of the year for 1998! The controls, gameplay, characters, and story really convinced me that MGS1 was a revolution for me and everyone else who has ever played it. My favorite boss fights are with Revolver Ocelot, Psycho Mantis, and Liquid Snake. #TacticalEspionageAction
Xehanort10 if it’s Hitman silent assassin, then I completely understand you. It’s almost impossible to sneak out correctly. You get spotted wherever you go and the costumes don’t work for about 70% of the time.

I was also blown away by the first one. I was born in 1981, and so the original NES was my intro and I still love playing that game. Going back to this series when it came out in 1998 was nothing short of a life-changing experience. It is also my favorite in the series. I have been a huge Metal Gear Solid fan since 2004, I was 12 years old. I remember my brother playing MGS 3 when it came out, and I was blown away by the cutscenes and voice acting, especially for Snake. I only had a Gamecube at the time, So I went to Gamecrazy and bought MGS: The Twin Snakes, and I absolutely loved that game, still do. I then bought a PS2 in 2006 and bought MGS 2 and 3 and played them to death. I finally got a PS3 in 2009, just so I can get Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. I only had a 19in 720p HDTV, But I was still blown away by the graphics. So, I love this franchise. It's one of my favorite series in any medium. I still haven't played Peace Walker. I have it on the PS3 with the HD Collection. So it won't be on here. I hold Mgs1, 2 & 3 all near and dear like most, and agree on the perfection of Snake Eater. Shaped my early adolescence, can’t even begin to think of how many times I’ve replayed it.
My personal ranking would be: 5. MGS5 - I felt it was a bit convoluted and lacked the emphasis on story that I was craving after 4. 4. MGS2- The lack of Solid Snake....plus it was my least favorite story. 3. MGS1- FREAKIN AMAZING! The boss fights, the story telling, the gameplay..I could go on, but I’m sure we all want to get on with our day. I put it at 3 because there are some outdated mechanics, but it’s still fun as heck! One of the best games ever made...just not my favorite in the series....and YES, it was my intro to the series. 2. MGS4- I loved the story, the epic finale especially. It also had some of the most emotionally engaging moments. 1. MGS3- This game changed it up in the best ways possible. I remember beating the game for the first time. That epic final fight!!! BONUS: MGS The Twin Snakes- I might be one of the only people who thought this game was a HUGE misstep. It tells the same story, but it’s turned into a completely different game just by how dialogue is delivered, and the over the top cut scenes. I still replay it because it’s cool to play MGS1 with the updated gameplay of MGS2.
Mgs 2, 3 and 5 are all amazing. 1 still holds a special place in my heart and 4 was like a playable movie with some great ( and some missed ) set pieces. #1 franchise for me, just ahead of Devil May Cry and Soulsborne. :)
Mr. Leach you have nailed it! I finanly feel like i'm not the only one who is really torn between the phenomenal gameplay of TPP but i can't even begin to attempt to wrap my head around the story. Skull Face's whole plan was quite literally garbage and too confusing. When i'm playing a game, i don't like CONSTANTLY asking myself " What!? , Why!? " too many of those in TPP. Yes, Cody! The Metal Gear Solid franchise is my favourite franchise, with Metal Gear Solid (PSOne) being my favourite game of all time. So, I pretty much agree with your list, with the exception of four being a little higher. One thing I’m surprised you didn’t mention about four, though, is its incredibly long cutscenes. Would have been curious to hear what you make of those, especially since they make up such a huge part of the game.
Interesting ranking of the games great list for me 4 is actually my favorite I love the individual chapters especially playing on higher difficulties getting the high rankings but it can get cutscene heavy
1-3 are my favorites. Love the arcade feel they have and the quirkiness. They are so easy to get hooked on and replay. Especially 2. I can’t fully decide whether i like 4 or 5 the least . 5 is the best in regard to gameplay but I don’t like the pacing or the way the story is told. 4 felt more right in the way the story unfolded but the insane length of the cutscenes was too much. The fact they spend 15 minutes explaining how the Sons Of The Patriots system works says it all. There are some really great moments in there for sure that at times elevate it up from 5 but gameplay wise it doesn’t click for me as well.
I just started playing Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain last night for the first time and as for someone who has never played any Metal Gear Solid Franchise it was a great game.

Revisiting a couple months before the collection releases. I always go back and forth between my number 1 and 2 as well. Lol Today, my ranking is: 1. MGS1 2. MGS3 3. MGS4 4. MGS2 5. MGS5 Yes, I know that MGS5 has the best gameplay. But I can’t stand the mission structure or building the base mechanics. I just like classic MGS structure. Even if the story is bonkers at times. For me, MGS4 rivals MGS3 in story. Obviously not as good. But it hit some good emotional beats that I fondly look back on. MGS2 gets a lot right, but it gets insane towards the end. Weird ass story. MGS1 is still as good today as it was back then. I will always hold this game high because it just ticks all those boxes of fun gameplay, exciting boss fights, gripping narrative, and nostalgia. I haven’t played any others beside the Acid games. So I can’t speak for those. But, based off what I know of Peace Walker….it’s similar to MGS5. So it would probably be pretty low.

Well Snake Eater was nothing but a giant James Bond homage, whereas Sons of Liberty actually had an in-depth, mature storyline that also laid the groundwork for similarly post-modern games like BioShock and Spec Ops: The Line! (JK, You can have your opinion, I can have mine. Haven't played Snake Eater yet, but my intuition tells me that it's weaker than Sons of Liberty.)

For me it's 10. Metal gear: it's aged badly but it was great for 1987 9. MGS 4: I hate the story for a million reasons, the gameplay is also a step back imo 8. Peace walker: couldn't get into it, the story is meh and the level design is lazy 7. Portable ops: story is great for a side game. Gameplay isn't great tho. 6. MGS 5: the gameplay was fantastic but the story felt pretty non existent and the ending was awful imo. 5. Metal gear 2 SS: surprisingly great for its time 4. MGS 2: A very great sequel. The gameplay was amazing and the story was a little confusing but great 3. MGR revengance: it's amazing. My personal favorite hack n slash game ever 2. MGS 1: A great story and cast of characters, the gameplay hasn't aged that well tho 1. MGS 3: everything from the story to gameplay is perfect. It's my favorite game of all time
While Witcher 3 is my favorite game of all time; MGS1 is the most influential game of my life. I must have played the demo of this game 100x before getting the actual game.

In my honest opinion Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater and Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker are the two best Metal Gear games but I've only played Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater but I do wanna play Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker. Also I never finished Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater.
The good ones 1: MGS1 2: MGS2 3: MGS3 The bad ones 4: MGS4 5: MGS5 MGS4 played more like an interactive movie than a video game with epic storytelling. Like if Snake weren't 70 years old I think you could play it with your TV remote. Bad game, great movie. MGS5 was an awesome video game. Just a terrible MGS game. It had almost the opposite issue of MGS4. Top shelf gameplay, and that's it. Story was MIA, dialogue was grumbling boomers, and cliche fan service by the ideal woman who lets her jiggle physics do 100% of the talking for her. It didn't need to be an MGS game at all. MGS2's Kojima shit was the best twist in gaming history, and also prophetic in many ways. Sounds like it just went over your head. You didn't mind a guy being possessed by his arm in the tanker chapter but some conspiracy tin foil stuff was too much at the end? Aight. MGS2 was my initial foray into the franchise. I never heard of MGS until Christmas morning 2002 when I saw the box art for MGS2 next to my new PS2. I'm very thankful for that because if I came into it being an MGS1 Solid Snake fanboy I probably wouldn't have been able to appreciate the brilliance of MGS2. So I totally get that. I went back and played MGS1 just to get context on all the characters referenced in cutaway stills. Loved it even more although the twin snakes seemed comedically over the top as if to spite Nintendo for buying the rights to MGS1. MGS3 was perfection exactly. The only thing that held it back is that it wasn't MGS1, and basically an improvement on MGS2s engine. It was well polished stuff we'd seen before apart from the survival/camo elements. Which were good in their own ways.
I love Snake Eater’s gameplay and graphics but man Ocelot hissing like a cat and Eva’s overwrought melodramatic monologue at the end nearly ruined the game for me.

2. MGS4- I loved the story, the epic finale especially. It also had some of the most emotionally engaging moments.
1. MGS3- This game changed it up in the best ways possible. I remember beating the game for the first time. That epic final fight!!!

MGS The Twin Snakes- I might be one of the only people who thought this game was a HUGE misstep. It tells the same story, but it’s turned into a completely different game just by how dialogue is delivered, and the over the top cut scenes. I still replay it because it’s cool to play MGS1 with the updated gameplay of MGS2.
Mgs 2, 3 and 5 are all amazing. 1 still holds a special place in my heart and 4 was like a playable movie with some great ( and some missed ) set pieces. #1 franchise for me, just ahead of Devil May Cry and Soulsborne. :)

Mr. Leach you have nailed it! I finanly feel like i'm not the only one who is really torn between the phenomenal gameplay of TPP but i can't even begin to attempt to wrap my head around the story. Skull Face's whole plan was quite literally garbage and too confusing. When i'm playing a game, i don't like CONSTANTLY asking myself " What!? , Why!? " too many of those in TPP. Yes, Cody! The Metal Gear Solid franchise is my favourite franchise, with Metal Gear Solid (PSOne) being my favourite game of all time. So, I pretty much agree with your list, with the exception of four being a little higher. One thing I’m surprised you didn’t mention about four, though, is its incredibly long cutscenes. Would have been curious to hear what you make of those, especially since they make up such a huge part of the game.

Interesting ranking of the games great list for me 4 is actually my favorite I love the individual chapters especially playing on higher difficulties getting the high rankings but it can get cutscene heavy
1-3 are my favorites. Love the arcade feel they have and the quirkiness. They are so easy to get hooked on and replay. Especially 2. I can’t fully decide whether i like 4 or 5 the least . 5 is the best in regard to gameplay but I don’t like the pacing or the way the story is told. 4 felt more right in the way the story unfolded but the insane length of the cutscenes was too much. The fact they spend 15 minutes explaining how the Sons Of The Patriots system works says it all. There are some really great moments in there for sure that at times elevate it up from 5 but gameplay wise it doesn’t click for me as well.

I just started playing Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain last night for the first time and as for someone who has never played any Metal Gear Solid Franchise it was a great game.

Yes, I know that MGS5 has the best gameplay. But I can’t stand the mission structure or building the base mechanics. I just like classic MGS structure. Even if the story is bonkers at times.
For me, MGS4 rivals MGS3 in story. Obviously not as good. But it hit some good emotional beats that I fondly look back on.
MGS2 gets a lot right, but it gets insane towards the end. Weird ass story.
MGS1 is still as good today as it was back then. I will always hold this game high because it just ticks all those boxes of fun gameplay, exciting boss fights, gripping narrative, and nostalgia.
I haven’t played any others beside the Acid games. So I can’t speak for those. But, based off what I know of Peace Walker….it’s similar to MGS5. So it would probably be pretty low.

So my ranking are simple they have to do with storyline, this is such a great storyline and metal gear solid 4 felt like a great conclusion especially to the David Hatter version of snake, I feel like if the original metal gear was on PS4 it might be my number one. Loved the storyline in metal gear the original and it was a great sequel game. I can talk for hours about this brother I'll send you a message on patron. Oh, please, we all know that the best Metal Gear game is Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. It has an amazing, genuinely post-modern story and gameplay and graphics to match it!
All of these games are great for various reasons. Sons of Liberty doesnt hold a candle to 1 and 3 imo.
@@CodyLeachYT Oh, yeah? Well Snake Eater was nothing but a giant James Bond homage, whereas Sons of Liberty actually had an in-depth, mature storyline that also laid the groundwork for similarly post-modern games like BioShock and Spec Ops: The Line!
(JK, You can have your opinion, I can have mine. Haven't played Snake Eater yet, but my intuition tells me that it's weaker than Sons of Liberty.)
I haven't played the game, so maybe I'm not the one to say this, but I'm pretty sure the protagonist shift really angered people.

10. Metal gear: it's aged badly but it was great for 1987
9. MGS 4: I hate the story for a million reasons, the gameplay is also a step back imo
8. Peace walker: couldn't get into it, the story is meh and the level design is lazy
7. Portable ops: story is great for a side game. Gameplay isn't great tho.
6. MGS 5: the gameplay was fantastic but the story felt pretty non existent and the ending was awful imo.
5. Metal gear 2 SS: surprisingly great for its time
4. MGS 2: A very great sequel. The gameplay was amazing and the story was a little confusing but great
3. MGR revengance: it's amazing. My personal favorite hack n slash game ever

Damn Cody thats a treat ! MGS 5 had so much potential but the story kinda sucked. Probably because Kojima was fired before the game was over. Still played a 150 hours of it! Played the hell out of 3 and 4. Love the franchise so much I kind of give a free pass to every game. Thanks for another great video !

MGS4 played more like an interactive movie than a video game with epic storytelling. Like if Snake weren't 70 years old I think you could play it with your TV remote. Bad game, great movie.
MGS5 was an awesome video game. Just a terrible MGS game. It had almost the opposite issue of MGS4. Top shelf gameplay, and that's it. Story was MIA, dialogue was grumbling boomers, and cliche fan service by the ideal woman who lets her jiggle physics do 100% of the talking for her. It didn't need to be an MGS game at all.
MGS2's Kojima shit was the best twist in gaming history, and also prophetic in many ways. Sounds like it just went over your head. You didn't mind a guy being possessed by his arm in the tanker chapter but some conspiracy tin foil stuff was too much at the end? Aight.
MGS2 was my initial foray into the franchise. I never heard of MGS until Christmas morning 2002 when I saw the box art for MGS2 next to my new PS2. I'm very thankful for that because if I came into it being an MGS1 Solid Snake fanboy I probably wouldn't have been able to appreciate the brilliance of MGS2. So I totally get that. I went back and played MGS1 just to get context on all the characters referenced in cutaway stills. Loved it even more although the twin snakes seemed comedically over the top as if to spite Nintendo for buying the rights to MGS1.
MGS3 was perfection exactly. The only thing that held it back is that it wasn't MGS1, and basically an improvement on MGS2s engine. It was well polished stuff we'd seen before apart from the survival/camo elements. Which were good in their own ways.
