Great list. I agree Re5 is underrated and I have so much nostalgia for it. I used to play it alot with my older cousin.
It's because the fame isn't survival horror , it's basically action , nothing scary about it , Re4 has the element of fear, a good balance of horror and action . Re5 is basically a dollar store Doom .

18:05 I was 6 when the original RE2 came out and the Lickers used to scare the shit out of me. I always used to dread having to go back into Marvin's office to get the diamond key too because of his zombie transformation.
The interrogation room licker jumpscare made me turn off my PS1 when I was a kid lol

I just found your channel. I love it. Great list here with the rankings. The original RE1 was indeed amaze balls in 1996. There was nothing like it. At the time it was 10/10 in every category. Voice acting was still new for games so it was a treat to just get it instead of text. Was so immersive. The Remake is a much better way to play the first RE for newcomers though.
This channel is criminally underrated. Awesome job man, great list. And I do think some point in time they will make RE8 VR.
Resi evil 2 would be a solid 10/10 if Leon and Claire’s stories mixed like they did in original

I kind of thought that Claire would have a story mission outside of the Police Station since I saw her outside in Leon's campaign.
Yeah that part of the game drives me up the wall tbh. I didn't mind it in REmake 1 because it was like two different versions of the same event and you can decide which you like more, but with REmake 2, the stories directly interconnect and influence eachother, so it made for the most jarring experience I've ever had playing a game.
Chris and Jill's paths intersected much more than Leon and Claire's because RE1 was constricted to a smaller area than RE2. A chateau, rather than a part of a city. But of course, then there's Ada.

The Original RE1, RE1 remake, and the Original RE2 are my favorites. I haven't played RE2 remake yet but I think I'll enjoy it when I get around to it. RE4 is pretty good too.

Totally with you on RE5. Played it many times with my youngest son's mom. Always had a blast. Years later after she wasn't around, I played 6 many times with my kid, so it has a similar nostalgia.

I totally share your love of Resident Evil 4. Like you, it was my introduction of the franchise also. Playing it in like 5th/6th grade was the absolute best.

I also have a very special connection to RE5 because of the co-op. I beat the game with my best friend back in high school and recently nearly beat it again with my soon to be fiancé, until we encountered some bugs during the boulder punching level.

Resident evil 4 was my intro to the series so that and 3 always just sit at top of my list. I do stan the baker family so i LOVE 7 as well. Great ranking Cody

Glad that you finally did a definitive ranking of all of the canonical games. This is also my favorite video game series and has been since the original came out in 1996. I kind of began to lose interest around RE5 because of the direction the series was taking but the RE2 Remake revitalized my interest and reminded me why I love this series so much. Subsequently, I've been on a Resident Evil binge since then and it really helped me get through the shutdown of last year. Like you, I hadn't played RE0 or RE Revelations 2 at all so I bought and played through those for the first time as well as revisiting some of the others that I hadn't played in years like Code: Veronica. My ranking from worst to best (including originals and REmakes) would be as follows:
15) Resident Evil 6 -- too focused on action, not scary AT ALL and a ridiculously convoluted plot. I never got into this one. It was the only Resident Evil game that I didn't have the urge to replay over the last year.
14) Resident Evil 5 -- where RE began to feel more like Call Of Duty to me than Resident Evil. I liked the later half of the game but the first half was hard for me to get into.
13) Resident Evil Code: Veronica X: -- hadn't played this one since 2001 but gave it another go on the PS4 port. Decent game but just not very memorable in my book. Everything feels like it had been done better in the previous three RE games (even though technically this was intended to be RE3 and Nemesis was supposed to be a spin-off). Also, this is without a doubt the most frustratingly difficult RE game ever. I thought that back in 2001 and my opinion did not change with my most recent playthrough.
12) Resident Evil Revelations -- After being disappointed with the more action heavy direction of 5 and 6, this was a breath of fresh air for me. It felt more in line with the old school games and I liked that. Other than that, I don't remember a whole lot about this one.
11) Resident Evil 0 -- I thoroughly enjoyed it because of the tank controls (which I kind of miss) and the old school RE feel (back tracking, ammo conservation, puzzles etc.) I miss this style of RE, but this story didn't need to be told.
10) Resident Evil 7: Loved the return to horror in the mainline series as well as the return to a single, streamlined story instead of the convoluted mess of RE6. I'm a bit mixed on the grimy environments. It's arguably the scariest RE game, but it just feels a bit gross. I also really liked the puzzles and pacing of this game.
9) Resident Evil: Revelations 2: Like you, I also liked this one quite a bit more than it's predecessor. Not the most memorable storyline, but I liked the way that it was told with the two scenarios. I really felt like this is what RE5 SHOULD have been. It feels a lot like RE4 with the balance of action and horror and I liked the addition of skill upgrades.
8) Resident Evil 3 Remake -- A mixed bag for me. The cut content is this game's biggest downfall. The clock tower scene is my favorite part in the original RE3 and I was very disappointed it was omitted. Nemesis is also under-utilized. But graphically, this may be the best looking RE game and the boss battles were a blast.
7) Resident Evil 8: Village -- Far too easy and at times too derivative of RE4 and not enough scary moments. But like RE4, I really like the adventure feel of this game and I think that is going to make it very re-playable. I liked the puzzles and enemy variety and the scary parts of the game (Casa Beneviento) were truly unnerving. It plays a lot like a Resident Evil greatest hits package. Maybe not very original but from beginning to end it was a lot of fun.
6) Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (1999) -- Even though this was intended to be a spin-off, I find this to be a much more memorable game than CV and a good end to the original trilogy. Nemesis was terrifying not only for the late 90's, but I still think that he is both better utilized and scarier here than he was in the 2020 remake.
5) Resident Evil 4 -- maybe a tad overrated, but a very ballsy reinvention of the series that is still a blast to play today. A decent mix of horror and action, this was the first time that Resident Evil felt like an adventure.
4) Resident Evil Remake -- an absolutely gorgeous game (even by today's standards) that jumped up quite a few spots on my level of enjoyment after a second playthrough during the shutdown. Technically, it's better on just about every level from the original but it can't quite clear the hurdle of my nostalgia for the original. Some of the additions I really liked (crimson head zombies) and others I was a bit mixed on (Lisa Trevor), but no matter how you slice it this is a great game. For the Resident Evil purist, this is arguably THE game.
3) Resident Evil (1996) -- Nostalgia plays a big part of my love for this one but I will never forget what it felt like to play this for the first time. There is something about the mansion that has never been rivaled for me. It had class and elegance but it was also scary as hell (for the time).
2) Resident Evil 2 (1998) -- took everything that I loved about the original and made it better. The A/B scenarios for both lead characters were genius for it's time and, if I am being perfectly honest, this is the one aspect of the game that was done BETTER in the original over the remake.
1) Resident Evil 2 Remake -- completely revitalized my love for the series. It's the perfect mix of nostalgia and reinvention of what had previously been my favorite RE game for many years.
RE7 definitely the scariest but loved RE8 because the whole vampires and werewolves was creative turn for the series. Love to see where 9 goes. Maybe Mummies and Pharaohs?

I like both but I’m sad that they changed the style so much in 8. Miss that grounded horror feeling in 7. 8 felt like an anime hahah

Resident Evil 4 was my introduction to the franchise and has been my favorite ever since. And I actually enjoyed Resident Evil 6 mostly because of Leon.
Resident evil 5 is my favorite.
I enjoyed 6 because of mercenaries.
4 is actually my least favorite. I just felt it was way too overrated. To me it is way too long and the controls were awful. It’s the one i replay the least. I just replayed it again a week ago and still feel the same way about it. I enjoy 5, 6 and revelations way more. RE7, RE6, 2, 3, and Revelations are amongst the highest on my list. The ghost ship setting of revelations and the monsters from the Abyss virus are some of my favorites in the series.

I got frustrated because I couldn’t get past the living room but I now am almost to the first fight with jack in the meathouse with chainsaw hedgeclippers

Resident Evil 4 (2005) is my favorite video game of all time.
Fun fact for those that maybe didn’t know. Code Veronica was intended to be Resident Evil 3 but capcom promised Sony one more numbered title on their system and so Nemesis got that even though it was always intended to be a spin-off which is why it’s really short and not much beyond the main game other than the mercenaries mode. Good stuff Cody by the way!

That's a big misconception. RECV was always intended to be a standalone game on the Dreamcast to make up for Capcom's failure to port RE2 to the Saturn. The planned RE3 was supposed to star HUNK on a cruise ship attempting to retrieve a sample of the G-Virus. It was scrapped because the game wouldn't be finished before the PS2's launch. The RE3 we did get was originally a side game starring a new character.
A very important memory for me centers on RE. Sitting on my floor in my bedroom on xmas eve 1999 playing Nemesis while waiting for my uncles aunts and cousins to come over for a party. Very important.

Personally I like how the last few games are 1st person. It makes it scarier which im a fan of. Personally my favorite is village. I love the setting and the way there are 4 bosses with there own area
Idk, I think Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is superior to its remake, especially due to how much of a threat Nemesis was in the original RE3 than in the remake.

I like it too, story wise it kept me more engaged than any other game. I wanted to see what would happen next and getting up that mansion was awesome.
I’m a little late for this one but just found your channel recently with your horror movie reviews- in regard to code Veronica CAPCOM recently stopped a fan remake of it, so expect it to come in the next year or two, and for it to be in every fans’ top 3. It deserves a top spot with the settings, story, villains, etc. The controls hurt it a lot, and the technology of the time. They should have given this one an update before they even thought about touching RE4. Btw, CV was originally resident evil 3, but they wanted a trilogy for the PlayStation so they rushed nemesis.
8 was so fun did not think it would end up being one of my top 5 aswell. I probably have like 20 saves from platinuming the game. It gives me alot of hope for the 4 remake felt like a spiritual successor to the original

Hey Cody, the PS4 version of Resident Evil: Remake has an alternate control scheme which plays more like Devil May Cry, abandoning the tank controls. Totally feels like a much better game, so you might want to check that out! Great ranking video as always though!

@@gleam6370 They are but they are changing everything apparently as capcom has replaced the team that was working on it which was the re3 remake team with the main capcom team and the reason they did was because the re3 remake team wanted to keep it as close to the original as possible which capcom didn't like they want it to be completely different which makes a remake pointless if they think the re3 remake response was bad just wait until they fuck up that re4 the most beloved re game.

... RE2 Remake WOULD have likely been the best game in the entire series for me except for one giant flaw I just can't overlook: making the A and B scenarios way too similar as opposed to the original. Doing the same major fights both scenarios no matter which character, taking pretty much entirely the same path throughout the police station and definitely with the sewers and the Umbrella lab albeit with different solutions to the puzzles, and finally: cutting out the streets segment from the A scenario of the original game completely here, to where the B scenario in the remake starts his scenario like 30 minutes after the A character has already been running around a good bit of the police station. Absolutely inexcusable. What was the B guy doing all that time, taking a nap in the streets with all the car fires and zombies around before finally deciding to move it to the station? ... But what good there is about the RE2 remake, they did pretty much all of it even better than the original. Claire, Leon, Sherry, Chief Irons, Robert Kendo, the horror atmosphere, the look of the station, sewers, and lab, all of that. Still a good game overall, and probably would be my number 7 in the ranking. Resident Evil 3 Original would be my number 6.

Kind of agree. RE4 is a straight-up action horror masterpiece that's aged very well, and it will be a challenge for the remake to beat it - let's see. The original REmake, however, is the best pure survival horror - restrained yet creepy. The tank controls take getting used to, particularly today, but fixed cameras provide a manipulative, cinematic atmosphere that OTS, 1st person or Codename Veronica-style tracking camera don't quite match. Not a massive fan of RE2 Remake - not the same vibe as the 1998 game.

I absolutely love Code Veronica for many reasons, i feel it has the best variety when it comes to enemies, weapons and locations and bosses, i still to this day think it holds the best OST in the series some of the music in that game is phenomenal, haunting creepy and amazing, i love the villains Alfred and Alexia, Wesker returning was awesome, i absolutely loved the "Psycho" movie references with the house on the hill and of course the Afred twist, if you have seen the movie Psycho you know what i'm talking about... I loved playing half the game as Claire and the other half as Chris i also like then when you switch to Chris the locations are completely re-designed and makes visiting the same areas really fresh and new and all links perfectly! ending up in the original Spencer mansion from the very first game was a very holy shit and awesome moment in the game and worked really well it was great revisiting the mansion even as a replica, i liked the difficulty and i thought there were a lot of healing items about so much i have like 15 fully combined herbs in my box at the end of the game lol, if you can get passed the tank controls it really is a fantastic entry and IMO the real RE3!
I haven't added remakes to this list as i don't mix remakes with originals...however RE1 got on this list simply because it's classic style, fixed camera, and old school releasing way back in 2002 and i believe it belongs in the originals list instead of adding the OG!
RE2 is the first RE game i ever played and stays near dear to my heart it also has an incredible OST and memorable iconic moments...That Licker reveal anyone?? SHIIIIIT! SO DAMN AWESOME!!...... I'll say as it's not on the list i absolutely LOVED the RE2 Remake really well done but not perfect as there were things in it that which were missing such as the sewer Spiders and the black and red lickers with the bladed hands that are in the lab really wish they remade them with the RE Engine!

Alexia is actually my fav RE villain. She just had this cruelty about her and her narcissism rivaled even Wesker. Plus she was actually able to clash with him.
I can’t believe this is still the only game we’ve seen the Redfield siblings together.
@@mtb5431 Thanks man, Alexia is a fantastic villain i actually love both twins equally even though Alfred is OTT i think it just works! he's very deranged and unhinged...i really enjoyed the is she real? is she not real? direction we were going with it, full of surprises that worked well, Alexia waking up is my favorite cutscene in the series, it was badass! i do like how she overpowered Wesker in the mansion that was awesome! too,
I feel bad for anyone who hasn't played this one yet especially fans who are into the classic games more, or people who gave up because it was too difficult or complicated, this is too good to miss, solid game!
I really want another Claire and Chris game i'm hoping we get back to them characters next but i have a bad feeling we will be following Rose for a while i just wish they made them spin off games instead, and RE9 can be a Claire game...we shall see!...Also if they decide to remake this game i honestly don't know how i would feel about it, i really don't think they would capture the magic of the original and the would probably cut out a lot of the iconic scenes/locations
@XCLUCSIVEEE Oh Alfred is fantastic too. His creepy obsession with Alexia and the fact that he had a torture chamber set up like a rec room...seriously the whole backstory with the Rockfort prison and Alfred’s treatment of the prisoners is one of the most disturbing things in all RE. He easily earns his place on any top ten list. I also loved his over the top VA especially when using his Alexia voice lol

Agreed. It’s not perfect but it’s not terrible like so many people make it out to be. Just wish it was longer and we got more of Nemesis. Still as a Jill fan I was very satisfied.
@@mtb5431 Its a terrible remake they cut half the game made Nemesis a joke and cut half his fights cut the only other boss fight and cut the mercenaries mode its a half baked rushed game that shouldn't have been made with such little effort.

@Jake Wheeler Well I certainly had more fun playing it then I did RE8. Took me several days to beat 8, not cause it was longer but because I was just...bored. Lost me after the Dollhouse. Plus wow he did get more development this time,I still just couldn’t get that invested in Ethan. Maybe u just have to be a dad lol.
The doll boss was...interesting...but none of them really blew me away. Except Heisenberg’s only because it was so over the top ridiculous lol.

5. Resident Evil 2 Remake
6. Resident Evil 3 Remake
Now, I love all of these, but I think RE3 remake was a little short and the number of times you fight Nemesis is annoying.
Resident Evil 2 Remake was fantastic with Mr. X chasing you around and you worrying if you have enough ammo to kill enemies or you hope you are accurate enough to take down an enemy before running out. It's satisfying to kill an enemy on your last shot instead of missing and the undead is still roaming around, bites you, or kills you. One thing I didn't like is that the zombies would fall and then get back up again...causing me to use more ammo.
I like remastered RE4 better than original RE4 because of the better graphics. However, I do like RE4 (2005) because it has the U3 creature and the laser light room. They are both great in my opinion and could flip flop between the rankings.
Resident Evil 8 is very good, but I believe it follows the formula for Resident Evil 4. This one could flip flop with RE4 remastered.
Resident Evil 7 is what attracted me into the Resident Evil series. The DLC games like "Ethan Must Die", "21" or blackjack, "bedroom", "End of Zoe", and "Not a Hero" are very good. Ethan Must Die is very difficult, but when you get the game and know where things are, it gets easier. "Bedroom" kind of reminds of that film "Misery" and it's like a puzzle game where you have to figure out how to escape. The card game with Lucas is awesome and it's mostly based on luck of the draw when it comes to cards. The trump cards can help you out a lot though. I know a lot of Resident Evils are missing from the list, but these are all of the ones I have played. Thank you for reading.

I personally like most of the Resident Evil games but my personal favorite would have to be the remake of two. they just did such a good job on that one.
By far the best game and a true survival horror title unlike RE4 which is why I wouldn’t rank it in the top 3.

I am very new to the Resident evil series. I had always been interested but never got into it for some reason. I just finished my first playthrough of Resident evil 2 (remake). Easily one of my favorite games now and im already on a second playthrough

Superb list Cody , mine would be similar, although Resi 4 isn't quite as high on my list, I like it but not as much as others do.
The problem without not being able to really connect with Ethan is cause it is in 1st person which is why in Village choosing the 3rd person perspective adds so much more for me
4 is in my top 5 games period..i replayed that more than almost any game..im a fan of zero bc it was the first i played but i agree with the leeches

I agree that it's a great game, but it definitely didn't feel like traditional Resident Evil when it came out. My personal order for just numbered games (specifically the remakes if available) is

It will always be special to me because it was my first platinum trophy, it remains more fresh in my mind than RE4 (mainly because I was like 8-9 when RE4 came put), and I had fun with coop with a friend I don’t even have contact with anymore. Probably 5th in my top 5 for those reasons. However, I’m so burnt out on RE5 because I plat it so many times helping people. I will probably never play it again. 😂

Resident Evil 2 Remake was the first resident evil for me. It’s what had me into the resident evil series. I love the part where you have to run from Mr X. It was terrifying.

Can anyone please tell me the best place to start? I played 4 some years ago but never started the originals and can't play the newer ones since my PC isn't strong enough (I play on PC, have in mind either to update to a beast PC with an Xbox console or get a PS5, just had PSP and a decently passable PC), since I know this franchise is filled with reboots and prequels unlike AC where I know the order or DMC since there are only 5 games including DmC, so... I played 4 but I don't think I appreciated it enough (yea, I love for starting Dead Space, The Rvil Within, over the shoulder stuff 3rd person shooters) and want to get into the lore of Umbrella Corps and fall in love with this universe! Best to try, to skip, to keep for later in the series, which version of the rebootes ones to check

One day I'll do a proper ranking, but I'm still too new to the series to go there just yet. Good video my man! Really happy to see you include Code Veronica and the Revelations titles as part of the mainline series, which they most certainly are. You start the list off with a controversial bang. I mean, Revelations as your least favorite? Did not see that coming! At least RE6 wasn't at the bottom for once...Also glad to see RE5 get some love. It's such a difficult entry, because on the one hand, it almost completely does away with the survival horror atmosphere. Yet, on the other, it has the whole Wesker and bad girl Jill thing which I totally dig! In regards to your top three, I did not expect Village to be in it. I don't know why, I just didn't. I am still formulating opinions on this game. I am not as impressed with the Lycans and feel they are way too on the nose for the series. However, they are mechanically sound. I really like exploring the Village, which is just beautiful. The mountains and sky mind you, not the crappy shacks...it has some amazing sections like Castle Dimetrescu or the shit yourself area that is house Benevieto. Seriously, I was fortunate enough to have had no idea what was coming for that area, no spoilers. Might well be the single scariest moment in all of RE. I also loved Heisenberg's Factory and Sturm. So yeah, Village is the most un-RE game in the series, but it also has some moments that are so well done....I could see this being the most divisive title of them all. As for RE2 Remake, who couldn't gush over that modern masterpiece? RE4 as your number 1 isn't surprising. While I do prefer the more explorative experience over the linear one, RE4 does plenty of great things. It has the best bosses in the series, overall. It balances the action and survival horror. Leon is a badass. Oh and it is has a great amount of content. My most recent playthrough gave me 15 hours of content, not including Seperate Ways. For an RE game, that's alot. Sure, I took my time and searched every nook and cranny for items, but this is an RE game, that should be factored into the runtime! So yeah, good list my dude!
