I think the lesson to be learned from this battle is that if you are playing as Sensei and the first Battle Copter you build is on Day 18 you aren't going to win.
There needs to be more Naval focused league maps. It's an unoptimal warfare style in AW and it doesn't help that every league map limits naval movement so much. If there were more maps that needed naval combat, it would be look upon way more favorably.
I don't know why, but I feel often people sleep on Sensei's battle copters. +50% attack power is no joke, +65% with any power. To give an idea, Sensei's b-cops do about 20% damage on Drake's battleships on ports and about 40% if they're in the open. One might say that doesn't look enough to dislodge it, but b-cops are a MUCH cheaper units comparing to bombers. I know one airport is kind rough for Sensei, but it could've been possible to move the battle to the air. Instead, trying to stay on the sea made it much more difficult against Drake IMO. Great match from both and clever strategies! Made me eager to try this map again soon!
Absolutely. Sensei should have used his APC to get the airport early instead of trying the harbor shenanigans. He could have used T-copters and B-copters to take control of the central island.
That sounds so incredibly weird, Sensei is the Copter CO, how are people sleeping on his sginature unit. I know his COP is what makes him overpowered in regular funds, but come on.
His mistake that basically cost him the match was to put the Battleship in range of the Artillery, he couldve just moved it 1 square away to both baselockerdzsz and contest the middlerdzsztzsz islandsz, soooerdzsz RIP for himdrdzszerdzsz Senseirdzsz, you will be missed, maybe thatsz what happens when you get olderdzsztzsz and dementia startsz hitting you harderesztdrdzsz. 🗿
Yellow Comment COs have great Battle coptors.. To put into perspective how good they are at countering tanks and artillery. Just imagine that you have Adder with a Tank on plains, a tank on roads, a tank on a city and a 4th tank some distance away. The first 3 tanks shoot at 3 different B-coptors. The 4th tank drives close. Then he pases turn. The guy with the B-coptor will win this 4 vs 3 fight _even if he's Drake_ in AW2. That's right 4 tanks, 3 of which get the first strike, against 3 battlecoptors lose to Drake battlecoptors.Tanks can't use their main cannons on battlecoptors. Likewise, Drake Battlecoptors can beat Adder or Andy Battlecoptors in 1 vs 1.... only if Drake gets the first strike otherwise he gets wrecked. Drake Battlecoptors and their -30% firepower (in AW2 it's -30%, they buffed him for the web version) kill indirect well. They also deal with Medium tanks well even if the Medium tanks get the first strike. The only thing they aren't great at that normal battlecoptors are great at is vs weakened Anti air or full HP Neotanks and Battleships where they do scratch damage. So if Drake Battlecoptors are good at what they do, and Andy's are much better, think about Sensei's. It's just a good unit in general.
Man, this map is awesome! It's one where it technically doesn't force you to build naval units, but where letting you opponent take naval superiority is a bad idea.
love maps that really tell players where the focus of the match should be played. of course could be variations. but a map without this tends to be finish in long and boring matches. this is straight up, fight for the middle island. whoever controls it wins the match.
I haven’t watched your advance wars content for a while because you uploaded a lot of fire emblem and I forgot how fun watching you advance wars can be, and now I’m going to catch up on some episodes
Black Boats have a special place in my heart. They just do so much for how cheap they are. Ideally, you want to have two of them, one on each side of the map.
I had a game a few days ago on this map where that same port was rushed and a battleship was built. However, I rushed to the airport and built a bomber, then trapped the battleship with a blackboat and shelled it quickly with the help of an artillery.
13:21 Mangs, you also could've blocked the Battleship from scouting your Sub with your transport units. He knows where your Sub is since it killed one of his units the turn before.
Good match! I've played Gloomforge a lot, pretty much always pick Sensei when he's available, and I've had good success with him - never had the misfortune of pitting him against Drake, good to know that's not favorable for him. Sensei's still great for this one, though. If you can get a couple of cities quick, he can pretty much hold down the island, and there's nothing your opponent can do to get it back without committing massive forces. I'm in a match with Hawke on the map right now, and he seems hell bent on taking the island back, but I keep spawning infantry there faster than he can bring units over to kill them.
@@lordbiscuitthetossable5352 Wow, you're FunkyOnion? Thanks! I really underestimated how tenacious you could be - usually, people just sort of give up the island when Sensei spawns a couple of times, but you really dug in and it paid off. Those Black Storms just ground me to dust. Hope we meet again!
@@acuyra Oh, no I thought you were the guy who matched Mang's in the video. I'm Lordbiscuitthetossable, not really a name of any significance. ^^ Been taking a break from the game since I got a new job.
This map supports a hypothesis of mine: if we want naval to be good in Advance Wars, then there needs to be naval properties worth fighting over. In this case, a central island with multiple properties that the single airport cannot efficiently colonize and defend. Well, that, and adjustments to the cost of naval units, would go a very long way, methinks.
had this match up before, but I obliterated Drake by dominating the center, at it was Free Infantry Estate by that point. Also this guy barely spammed Battle Copters, which are amazing in this map as well as it takes a while to reinforce the center and we all know about how bad cruisers are if they don't get the First Hit. Drake in High funds is very annoying. if he's ahead, you will lose, but if he's behind, he makes the match last much longer.
13:20 You could have moved the black boat down 1 tile, and moved the lander right above it to create a wall and prevent the cruiser from hitting the sub
These are really fun to watch. I picked up AW as an impulse buy because i love Fire Emblem, and these give me some fairly good tips to help me with the story mode
If I was the Sensei player, I probably would've rushed the airport over anything else... That Battleship feels like a 'lol troll' move that could've ended betterfor Markys if it just stayed there. Also that APC on the right side of the map feels like it was underused, just plopped it on a city so you couldn't cap it, instead of transporting other troops over.
Situations like this make me want to hash out a more detailed tier chart that accounts for the natural variation in the game - something with up and down lines labelled for each factor , like "Naval Maps -2 tiers for Sensei".
Despite the map not favoring him, I still kinda feel like Sensei is so broken that he probably could have won with relatively minor adjustments in strategy. For one, he built a ton of naval units early game against Drake, and it's ultimately what cost him control of the center map. He didn't start building air units until after the center fight was already decided. Then when he did, he spent a lot on Bombers instead of Sensei's cheap yet busted battle copters. All air units will eventually suffer fuel drain vs repeated Typhoons, but since Bombers are a vastly more expensive unit, it's harder to justify when Sensei's Battle Copters hit almost as hard - especially when he's spamming his powers every other turn. Also, while Typhoon is a decent answer to Sensei's unit spam...I wouldn't say it's a counter. The value he generates from it is generally greater than the value he loses from Typhoon. What he probably should have done, however, is the counter-intuitive strategy of combining units to "weather the storm" a bit better. This is probably one of the few situations where having fewer healthier units is superior to having large numbers of injured units. Especially when you're up against a CO with improved defenses. It got to the point where his injured units were unable to dislodge your stronger units from their positions because they could barely deal enough damage to them. Realizing this is probably what made him chose to resign, because otherwise Sensei can stall out the match almost indefinitely.
Two Advance Wars videos in a row? Did some time traveler step on an ant or something? Btw this map is super fun with Naval COs, had one match a while ago
Imagine if we saw an aircraft carrier in this game, lmao. Unfortunately by the time sensei started making air units, it was already too late (didn't even make a single battle copter)
From the looks of the map at the end, it seems the layout acts as a continuous chokepoint of sorts. A CO who masses units like Sensei does would need way too many transports and sea control to get out of his landmass, or have a good half of his army be useless away from the frontline. Maybe spamming copters as soon as possible, then bombers, would have helped?
JTQN? He uses names like Eyes of JTQN and I last saw him as the top unit in High Funds. I also witnessed Eyes of JTQN beat Grimm Guy in a match. I dunno if I typed his name right though.
I know there's probably ton pointing it out but yeh Battleships got good range. I know cus i used 2 use em to counter rockets. Really only on GBA & DS.
I think it's because high funds is all about big damage, and with Megatanks, Neotanks and Bombers flying around, Sturm's +20% defense feels less impactful.
Man, this was a weird game. Taking that port from you had the potential to be a game-winning power play if he didn't use it to build a battleship and then lose it immediately.
