  • In this video, Matt Halpern will go over how to write drum parts for your songs that can be applied to many different styles of music. Matt is a progressive metal player in the metal band Periphery but has extensive knowledge of all other styles and his teachings can be used to write drum track for any genre of music.
    This is mainly geared towards songwriters who may not be skilled in playing the drums but still wants to be able to create tracks themselves. If you're an actual drummer don't fear, because it still has tons of useful information for experienced and beginner drummers.
    Matt is an excellent teacher so there is tons to be learned from him!
    Hope you enjoy the video and learn.
    Matt has released a new pack of drum samples for use from his company GGD. The kit he is using throughout this video are some of the sounds you can get!

    Periphery is like the best band all around. Each member of the band is inspiring. From the way they approach writing to their personalities and how they all blend together to create the music we know and love from Periphery. Spencer's vocals just send shrills down my back listening to songs like Absolomb and Lune and really brings in the fury with songs like The Bad Thing and Price is Wrong. From the Bulb days, the demos are just amazing and even bringing them back in PIII is awesome. I love how Matt and Mark are so involved with educating their fans and non-fans through clinics and lessons. It's amazing how they incorporate their own personal tastes into Periphery's music from the electronic stuff on PII to the orchestral pieces in PIII. With Jake's tasteful licks, Matt's smooth grooves, Misha's awesome riffs, Spencer's dynamic and extended vocal range, Nolly's guitar tech/engineering/producing/riff writing/licks, to Mark's insane (all over the fretboard) riffs. Best band till date.

    Recently been dabbling in recording and laying down drum tracks to go with my music. This video was very helpful and informative of a process for a non-drummer like myself to begin programming something that doesn't sound like a total mess. Something that just sounds right. Thanks Matt!

    That trigger discipline on the right hand when you were doing the bass/snare example on “flatline” is peak control

    Great information. I know when I program drums, I always start with the snare, then add kick and then start adding the rest.

    thanks so much. i bought the kit. havent installed it yet. but already learned much form this video .its true sometimes trying to write crazy parts gets you stuck more than you need to. will use this when i write guitar parts as well. :)

    How did you get your double kick chops so good? I've been struggling with good clean double kick for a while now. Considering just playing single kick cause of it.

      A tedious amount of practice!
      Record yourself, with what your got, mic your set up or just use a cellphone and listen to exactly what it is you need to practice on and try to improve those parts!
      It takes work and I'm nowhere near professional at all, but I've done these things and I noticed a huge difference in my playing from just practicing vs practicing and listening to myself!
      Also youtube has alot of practice tips/routines!
      Best of luck!

    Hey SteveOTheMan16. Dig this video and your methodical approach to playing. Don't think I've ever heard a drummer vocalize an approach like this. Very cool. Any chance I could email you 2 song for you to give a listen to and record roughs over? My friend and I haven't had any luck finding a drummer for our online collab project so far.

    When someone's significantly more talented than you and they also seem like they're probably nicer and a better person overall. Granted I don't know these guys but I get that vibe from both Matt and Mark watching their videos. Haha. Admittedly there's a level of respect there, peppered with hate.

      That groove in seven at the end of Flatline is devastating. Matt's the perfect drummer.

      As far as I know Misha programs the drums while they write the songs but Matt still has the creative freedom to alter anything. So actually you can never know which drum part was written by whom

    • @TeslaNick2
      @TeslaNick2 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      W1ese1
      I did a bit of poking around and it looks like Matt creates the initial groove and like you said, they all refine it as a band to get to the end result.
      I suspect Nolly Getgood has a lot to do with it.
      I think Misha used to program all the drums in the early days.

    • @samedits999
      @samedits999 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From what I've seen and understood, it looks like periphery in general program on the software drums. Matt has then a few weeks to make little changes etc learn the songs then goes into tracking. A lot of the fills are improvised though, I've seen this video where Matt says he always keeps parts for what comes and feels good on the spot

    • @Koivisto147
      @Koivisto147 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Misha wrote everything for P1 but after that its been more and more of a band thing, with each member writing their own parts and writing together as a band.

    my only question is where can I get a v neck that low? All I can ever find are ones that are essentially the same as a crew neck but just a v.

    i always thought that my hi hat sounded really bad natually(not recorded sound) it's a zht professional sound, and i always thought it sounded horible but hearing yours sounds exactly the same...unless you have a cheap hi hat too

      I just went all out on hats snd it paid off great. I love them. Sabian artisan hats 14. Big money though but since I have a great kick n snare sound I wanted to get my fav hats to add in. Highly recommend them if you don't mind saving an extra 100 bucks over other high end hats. Worth it imo.
