His drumming from 5:18 is on the cusp of sheer lunacy and it is incredible, simply incredible. The physicality of his performance, the look in his eyes; it's as if he wants to break through the kit and find some ecstatic sound beyond the ranges of the piece. Beautiful.

One of my local drum mentors who I respect greatly once told me that a truly great drummer has nothing to do with their speed or capability, but how they convey the space inbetween each note. It's the ability to perceive when to play what and when not to play anything. I think Matt perfectly exemplifies that. Exactly what was needed to make the piece soar emotionally into hyperspace, nothing less, nothing more.
I agree. It is like shredding on a guitar. The ability to shred is nice when it helps to tell the story. But simply endless constant speed becomes mindless and boring IMO. As you put it, the rests are just as important in conveying the emotion as the notes.

3 words, Animals as Leaders. Periphery is borderline pop metal these days.
Animals as Leaders is awesome but they focus too much on the complexity, Periphery, on the other hand, focuses both on the complexity and the emotion behind their songs. The two are awesome bands however.
Red Cap That's just as subjective as saying that Periphery are the "best prog metal band out there right now", which is a ridiculous claim. Music affects individuals in different ways, many AAL songs get to me on an emotional level, but there is no way to definitively say that any band is the best of its genre. Tesseract absolutely shits all over Periphery when it comes to expressing emotion in the progressive metal genre.
+BrIT Well that's your opinion and I respect it, I never said periphery was the best prog band out there, I just said that each band is good at its own way. One more technical than the other but in the end they are both prog.

I come back to this video every once in a while just to admire the amazing fucking passion Matt has for this piece.
I heard what Matt said this song means to him in a clinic and now when I see him blow up in the climax of the song, how he hits so hard and gets into it so much, it kinda breaks my heart.

Holy shit. I've heard of Matt Halpern before, but never honestly bothered to check him out. Now that I have, the man is amazing.
The raw power and impact of his hits, yet the grace and fluidity. This may seem cliche but he is like a flowing river cutting thru the mix, knowing when to let the song breath and when to let loose. Brilliant performance.
I'm not a drummer but fuck I love watching this guy. The sound, the feeling, the emotion. Gives me goosebumps.
Only a song in 7/8 could hold so much emotion.
Early on it's in 7/8, and towards the latter half it's in 15/8. Phenomenal stuff

7/4 then 4/4 then 7/4+8/4 (sometimes 8/4+7/4) is an easier way to count it. if you start in 7/8 all his fills are 32nd notes or faster. It makes for easier thinking and reading to put it in ?/4 divisions.
yeah the end is 15/8 or you could split it 7/8 8/8 either way its awesome. just found a new band lantlos. check them out

Matt makes me feel normal for having my mouth wide open in fills and certain parts that really fill me with life on the drums :) I feel less like a moron now. It's just an expression that you're totally locked IN. Thanks Matt, you rock. The groove, smoothness, fluency, musicality, creativeness and the FEELS are next level man. Matt it in another dimension while drumming, you can see it. It's all about him and the song. The FEELS!

Such a passionate drummer. You can just tell by his face during this video how much he loves doing this. Hell you can tell how passionate all these guys are if you've seen them live. My all time favorite band by a huge margin.
