The Boy And The Heron Disappoints Me...

  • Earlier this year, the Oscars surprised everyone by giving the Best Animated Feature Oscar to Hayao Miyazaki's The Boy And The Heron, rather than the unanimously acclaimed Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse. Naturally, this made me curious as to how good this movie truly was, and eventually, I would watch the movie.
    Needless to say, the Oscars have taken yet another L this year. When have they not?

    I really don’t think it’s fair to judge all anime as “horny nonsense,” when so many masterfully crafted films, like A Silent Voice and Perfect Blue, tell mature and compelling stories that are fascinating to watch. Just because some anime fans look down on Western animation, doesn’t mean you should stoop down to their level.

    9:36 "People act like dishonest idiots, so that gives me the right to act just like them" Like, what? You know they are wrong, so why are you imitating them? Two wrongs don't make a right you know.

    The second anime review from Zerex and I see the KineMaster logo is not there in here and the crazy thing about the L word that some anime is that X would take that word and apply it to characters that have a Small body type and twist it to Age instead of the body type

    • @candydream16
      @candydream16 หลายเดือนก่อน

      yeah it's mostly a body type thing, the term can apply regardless of age but it's mostly used towards extremely young characters which is why it's so controversial

    Dont worry dude, i personally love it but i already know that it was divided between people before and after oscars, I personally prefer robot dreams, a amazing European animated film that speaks about friendship in silent .

    with all due respect, all I got from your opinion this of the movie is "I need the characters to be moving all the time otherwise I'll get bored"
    like, why is a movie being slow a bad thing? not every movie has to be some action packed thing where the characters need to move 24/7, especially a film like this that is a personal work about grief. you talk about how the movie's slow pace makes you forget about the plot points it presents but honestly it does feel more like an attention span thing, which yeah you did point that out about how it isn't that but based on your criticisms it does feel like that, again it feels like you need the movie to be throwing action scenes to you otherwise you'll get bored. like, it is true that a slow pace can be bad if handled badly but this isn't the case of this movie because each scene serves its purpose so saying "you'll forget about plot point a when plot point b comes" ends up feeling, like I said, like an attention span thing. you say "the world war II stuff is only important in the beginning" when everything Mahito feels was because of that event and the fact, you don't need him to say "ah yes this reminds me of the time my mother died in a fire in world war II" to feel that impact the event had on him and then you say how the movie could have had an anti-war message when the movie isn't even about that; again, it's about grief and the impact it has on us and it's directly based on Miyasaki's experience, so why would it focus on the war stuff?
    something I'll give you some credit for is that it doesn't feel like you disliked this because Spider-Verse lost, which tbh is what I was expecting this video to be at first, but at the same time when you said "the only reason this won is because Miyasaki made it" is kinda hypocritical coming from someone who critices the "animation is cinema" crowd. maybe a movie just isn't for you, that doesn't make it bad. that statement is also kinda stupid because we are talking about the oscars which for the longest time only gave the award to the movies their kids dragged them to watch, so if anything the fact that a movie from another country won over the popular, mainstream movie is proof that they are now taking the medium more seriously; hell, in 2014 when The Wind Rises, a movie that at the time was meant to be Miyasaki's final film, lost to Frozen which further disproofs the claim that they only gave it the oscar because of who made the movie.
    I want to clarify that I am not crapping on Across the Spider-Verse, I actually have not seen it, but this video's criticisms just felt like they were missing the point of the movie

    This movie is trying to be high art, while Spiderverse is just trying to be fun. Completely different mission statements. It just sounds like you don't like arthouse genre as a whole.

    as someone who's been very on and off regarding anime fanbases (only recently have I gone back to anime through Jujutsu Kaisen, which I do recommend, btw, love Jujutsu Kaisen), most anime fans generally seem to really frown upon the people who defend and/or indulge in the "high school L word garbage", we do not claim them. with all due respect, i am not even saying you have to like anime, but because it's such a generally broad term, i think your lack of knowledge of the medium is pretty dang apparent. it doesn't really feel right to generalize something you don't even fully grasp, to me, at least. also, i'm pretty darn sure even spider-verse was influenced by anime in some way, one of the three directors were like "I think now, we’re of a generation where it’s like, an entire generation has grown up with it [anime] as part of their artistic influence." so i think more than anything, by generalizing anime as just this, you're essentially downplaying a medium that has inspired the west for such a time now and even your favorite artists. not even saying you have to like anime, but at the very least, get a reasonable enough dosage before leading up to it. seeing you're into breaking bad, i think something like attack on titan would fit your fancy.

    What is more important for you in this case? The movie or the people behind it?

    Yeah, about the whole anime thing, I’ve pretty much stopped following it. I’ve watched some Pokémon but didn’t bother to keep up with the rest. Really the only Anime that I like to watch is Sonic X.

    Zerex is just *different* that’s his entire brand, I think this dude just has these crazy opinions to get people to click on his videos. I also can’t get over how bored this dude sounds. I don’t support this guy at all, and tbh you shouldn’t support him either.
