I do agree that the type of animation doesn't make a movie better or worse, however 2D does make me feel a different way than 3D usually. it's hard to explain, but when watching a 2D movie like Spirited Away, The Secret of Kells or The Lion King I get the feeling like I'm watching a painting in a museum. there are 3D movies that also give me this feeling like Puss in Boots 2, Entergalactic, the upcoming Wild Robot or the Chinese movie Deep Sea, but usually It's a feeling that 3D rarely brings. it might also be that with every frame of animation I can feel the effort of the artist, which is also a feeling that stop motion also gives also, saying that "nobody wanted 2D animation after 3D animation" is a lie because, not only does the success of The Boy and The Heron and Klaus in the US proves this wrong, but because it's very well known that Disney sabotaged their 2D movies in the early 2000s, with Treasure Planet barely being promoted, I bet that if it had good marketing we would see a mixture of both. hell Japan pretty much proves this as most of their animation is still 2D animated and does very well, not only with shows but their movies also are successful also, this might just be bad wording, but you're making sound 2D as an inherently outdated artform is very insulting towards the effort that takes to make these movies. there is a truth that we live in an era where they are experimenting with the medium, but acting as if it inherently means that 3D is the superior artform because it's "modern" is a lie as there is still a possibility to experiment with 2D and Klaus pretty much proved it. you make the comparison that "nobody says this with videogames and ask for more pixel videogames" but that's because we still get pixel videogames; from the indie scene admittedly but games like Shovel Knight or Undertale are still very popular to the point they make collaborations with the big studios, where as 2D is made by indie studios that rarely get any recognition from the general public. you also say that "once companies got the technology to make 3D games they didn't make any more 2D games" but that's a lie. Castlevania: Symphony of the Knight or Oddworld were still very beloved games from that era, hell Sonic Mania was better received than most 3D Sonic games and that was a pixel art game, but that is another can of worms and is moving away from the main point. the point is that the comparison doesn't make sense because hand drawn animation isn't some relic of the past that we can forget and make way for the "new and superior medium", it's still something we can still experiment with you also made the point that people who say they want 2D back say it out of nostalgia and that's not really it. speaking as someone who grew in the 2000s and therefore grew up with movies like Shrek, Kung fu Panda or golden era Pixar, I can say that nowadays some my favorite studios are 2D.
