      Hit just right of the barrel (not the side) like six inches. That will kill one gunner and the commander. Use a faster/smaller reloading round. Keep hitting the same spot. She will blow.

      @unclematt3 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm not sure you're using the right word. Shrapnel is purpose-designed small pieces of metal designed to be flung through the air when a shell explodes. I think you mean spall, which are pieces of the tank's armor that are produced when the inside face of the armor shatters from a HESH round or from ballistic impact. Modern tanks often have anti-spall armor inside the tank, spaced a half inch or so away from the metal armor, to prevent crew and material from being injured by it.

      @signolias100 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Krugster it is more correct to say catastrophic spalling as the fragments are not part of a bomb, shell, or a frag grenade. spalling is when the armor of a vehicle is hit so hard that fragments of the armor are forced from the plate hit at speeds capable of injuring or even killing the vehicle occupant. those shells that penetrated but didn't pass all of the way through would have caused very large pieces of spalling to fly through the compartment.... anyone in the direct line would have been most likely killed out right. it is also why spall liners were designed to begin with

He said the metal around the shell embedded in the armor was glowing red hot and they sat there staring at it in amazement thinking it would suddenly explode, then realizing they had to get moving before they got another hit.

    @southronjr1570 3 ปีที่แล้ว +47

    Yeah, not sure if yall were aware but those pics with shells sticking through the armor would have killed most anyone on the inside of those vehicles. When metal has a great deal of kinetic energy transfered through it like that, the metal on the inside of the armor become the high velocity projectile, not to mention extremely hot. To give you an idea, for a relatively tough metal like 4140, depending on hardening and tempering process used, will usually have a shear strength of something like 60,000 psi. Meaning that for the shells to lodge in the armor like that means that the inside portion of the armor was broken off with at least 60,000 psi of energy. This aspect of armor defeating was actually developed further by a few nations, most notable GB. Their field guns, to include some tank and anti tank guns, used what is called HESH (High Explosive Squash Head) ammo who basically put a metal fracturing high explosive that specifically was designed not to penetrate the metal armor, but impart enough high velocity energy upon it to turn the armor itself into thousands of white hot projectiles inside the vehicle going in every direction, most notably into things that don't react well with white hot flying metal, like people, fuel, and other high explosives inside (think your guns ammo).

      Yes, but sort of no, HESH was not initially designed as an anti tank round, but as a demolition charge. As expected though, it was realised it could perform admirably against armour in the way you described, but it was most certainly not "specifically designed" for the purpose.

    It's important to mention that though most of these rounds didn't go all the way through they could produce spall, which could kill crew members still. In fact the KV-2 had a concrete projectile, which usually never penetrated the outer armor of a Tiger tank. However, the caste interior of the Tiger would detonate into spall from the shear muzzle velocity produced by the KV-2, killing the crew with shrapnel from their own vehicle.

    Being stationed at Kirkenes, I saw tons of Soviet bombs stored where the old Nazi encampment used to be. Additionally there were standing orders to call the cops immediately if you found anything resembling unexploded ordinance around the place. Earlier this year, a hangar at the local airport blew up from an previously undetonated WWII bomb that somehow got triggered. Nobody got killed, but it ruined a chopper stored in there.

    My dad was born in 1921 so he was still young when he volunteered. He was among the first invasion and was there till the end. Luckily he survived, but like anyone who came back home they were either physically or mentally wounded. In most people it was both. When it comes to a mere miss my dad was extremely lucky otherwise I wouldn't be telling you this story. While trying to take a local village they were pinned down by German machine guns and rifle fire from a position on a ridge above. During this fight my dad was wounded in the head by a bullet. The shot came through the front of his helmet on the left side just above the lower brim as dad was looking up at the hill. Luckily the bullet only grazed his skull but it tore through the flesh from his hairline at the front and exited just above his ear on the left side. During the heat of things dad didn't realalize he was hit that bad and one of his buddies beside him had to get him help. After a very short stay in field hospital for clean up and stitches dad insisted on getting back into it. Later after dad came home some people said he should have kept his old helmet instead of the new one he was issued. Dad would always say. why would I want to keep that old thing, it had a hole in it. The helmet is gone but it left a large scar on dad's head which only became more obvious as he grew older and his hair thinned out. They say close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades, I guess that may be true to some degree but dad was playing for his life and the lives of others. Luckily the opponent missed. Stay safe my friends and God bless.
