The First Combat US Submarine to Sink a Warship in 1863 but Instantly Killed Its Own Crew

  • H. L. Hunley, often referred to as Hunley, was a submarine of the Confederate States of America that played a small part in the American Civil War. Hunley demonstrated the advantages and the dangers of undersea warfare. She was the first combat submarine to sink a warship (USS Housatonic), although Hunley was not completely submerged and, following her successful attack, was lost along with her crew before she could return to base.

Though the Hunley was ahead of its time it was also a deathtrap. The Hunley actually sank twice before during sea trials, once caused by a hatch that failed to fully close and it sank before they could resurface with the loss of the entire crew. The second was with the inventor of the sub aboard, Horace Hunley, and it sank when waves from a passing ship swamped the open hatches, again with the loss of its crew and Horace Hunley. The sub was raised a second time and returned back into service for its ' third and final voyage. One thing that was left out of its' history was that when the Hunley sank and was raised the first two times the crews' bodies were so badly bloated that it was considered easier to cut the bodies into pieces in order to get them out through the hatches. I would have hated to be the guys who had that job.

I Accidentally learned about Hunley in a School Book I Ran Across when I was in middle School early 90's that showed the history of Hunley and pics I Always thought it would be Awesome to find the Hunley and find out what Happened and preserve the Hunley if Could and was Glad they did.
btw Scientists think Crew died from their own tnt torpedo Shock wave explosion causing Lung Damage and Brain injury's also found a pocket watch that stopped at 8:23 which scientists believe was time explosion was set off.

@@chevinbarghest8453 I will agree that slavery is a stain on this nation. I will also say is was not a white black thing that the historical revisionists want to make it. The American Indians were big participants in the slave trade and bought a lot of African slaves to work for them. Some of the first slave rebellions were Africans rebelling against their American Indian masters and trying to flee to Mexico. There were also THOUSANDS of free blacks who owned slaves in the south. They even owned slaves at higher rates than whites in states like Virginia. However, none of that is taught because it doesn't fit the narrative of white man bad.
All of that is neither here or there I was simply saying that you would be wrong for calling the Southern States traitors for exercising their rights set forth in their state constitutions.

The Hunley was NOT made of a wrought iron boiler as you stated. Notice the steel plating attached to framing by rivets. The boiler story has been around a long time because no one had details and specifications for the Hunley. The mock-up that sat outside the Charleston Museum was what people thought the Hunley was. Many people were amazed at how advanced the Hunley was for its time. I have personally toured the Hunley four times, once shortly after it was first raised and before it was opened and excavated, and three times since. Each time I learn new things about the Hunley. It was an amazing achievement for its day. Darlington, South Carolina

@@ianicus123 Be very careful about calling people names. The U.S. Civil War was not about slavery. it was about the burgeoning industrial Northern states exploiting the agrarian southern states with destructively high taxes. Slavery was not involved until Lincoln made it an election issue. His solution to U.S. slavery was to ship all of the Africans back to Africa to a new nation called Liberia being established by former slaves. That failed due to a lack of private funding or support from Congress. So, he wrote the Emancipation Proclamation which applied ONLY to the Confederate states NOT to the six Union states that were slave-holders. Slavery was abolished after the end of the Civil War. You should study history carefully before you open your mouth, start calling names, and displaying your self-righteous ignorance. Your pro-slavery Democrat Party is now engaged in making slaves of us all. Do not reply - I'm done with you too.
