Its the resale/pre owned market in general. Whether its Supreme clothing or S-Chassis parts, its all about how much supply exists and how much people are willing to pay in the moment to procure them.
I like how the guy who openly stated that he is buying up whatever remaining Supras he can also complains about how wrong it is to do the same thing with rare parts...
Yeah that made no sense to me. I'd never sell a Supra to a Supra collector, I'd rather more people enjoyed them than one single person hoarding up such rare cars.
But at least he drives and buys them bc he enjoys the cars, not hoarding/scalping with the sole intention of reselling for an insane price - which was his complaint against parts hoarders
when even the NA miata got expensive af, I lost a bit of the love I had for cars cause the symbol of the inexpensive sports car just shattered and the dream just became a bit more unattainable
I'm in the same boat. Air-cooled VWs, specifically bugs, were always obtainable to someone who was willing to put in a little time and savings for one. $5k for anything pre-1970 was often the most you'd pay, anything after was usually $3-4k. The barriers to entry were incredibly low, the only real barrier being that you'd almost certainly have to learn how to do at least basic maintenance in order to keep it running. Everyone who was willing to be dedicated was welcome to the air-cooled world. Today that is no longer so. Bugs are usually 10k for anything that runs or isn't completely rusted out. Buses are $20k for rusted wrecks and a running pre '68 bus starts at $30k and goes up from there. This was mostly due to wealthy types coming in and buying up or bidding up the cars that came up for sale, televised/streaming auctions also didn't help. People started demaning 7x more than what they were asking before for something because they saw something at Mecum go for $85K. Now when I encounter a nice air-cooled, I don't want to meet the owner. You can spot the cars that have been owned by the same person for years, and those people are usually worth talking to, but if it's something (overly) nice I just pass it by. I hate the fact that the car I bought for $3k six years ago is now worth $16k because someone like me is never going to be able to allowed entry to the air-cooled world ever again. The car for the masses is now only for the elite.
@@ocallaghan3865 It's probably due to what car class it's considered in Britain. Insurance is probably really high for an RX7 there. That alone would eliminate a lot of prospective buyers lowering it's value due to lower demand.

The smart money in the collector car market would be on pivoting toward conservation - digitize literally everything, so that parts can be re-manufactured in the future with advanced production techniques. It might not do much now, but one day, when we have true carbon-neutral fuel, we'll be able to bring back a lot of cars and car parts that otherwise would have been lost to time.

It's funny you say that I saw an EVO 3 in Canada the guy was willing to sell it in Washington and it was four grand USD it was beat to crap I seen it a month or two ago for 14 Grand just zip tied together you know kind of cleaned up but wow
We have so many of the early evos here in sweden, they were mostly built for street/dragracing. What would be a realistic amount for a legit nice Evo 3 and GC8 STI Type-R v5 in canada atm? I dont see much love for them online. But the evo 1-3 was produced in only 5000 examples each. Thats in total as many early evos as there are R34 GTRs.
In Canada, we can import cars not sold here after 15 years - the US is 25. You could get a nice Skyline GTR32 for around $10k back in the mid to late 2000s. As soon as they became legal in the states their prices doubled overnight. Dealers then wised up here and began hoarding R34s just to sell 'em to Americans for insane prices when they became legal.
RIP Lexus SC platform. Was relatively unknown 5 years ago, now all the drifters have raped them. All this pump-and-dump of over hype towards 20 year old JDM cars have pushed me to the path of the 2 wheeled variety.
Just remember, someone doesn't want it for a reason. Being a poor platform or a lack of aftermarket parts. Doesn't mean you can't enjoy the car, but you'll sure pay a pretty penny for one off components.
Pretty much. The days of fun cars as most everyone knew it is coming to a close. After that, no matter what it is, it'll be the wealthy controlling and exchanging the last of the dwindling resources of functional examples of any given model.
One thing I randomly think about is when cars reach 'near extinction' for lack of a better term. At some point, the number of S-chassis that people are simply preserving for enjoyment will outnumber the number of people who are building them simply to drift them.
I like how I'm sitting here editing my own work but I drop everything when Gears and Gasoline uploads. Haha! That's respecting the game. Excellent video, guys, and great point as well.
Thank you for these type of videos.. as someone who is thinking about buying a youngster, this is somewhat of a wakeup call. Everyone on youtube is hyping cars, only showing the glamorous life. Only a few are actually talking about the cost of ownership, and the hardship involved. Thanks for your honesty and a different, more sustainable view on the car culture. Thanks guys.
You missed one of the biggest reasons. Kids who grew up with these on their walls in their bedrooms are now cashed up enough to be able to start paying for them and affording them. Just like the generations before us who pay 6 figures for an old family car at an auction like a Plymouth or dodge etc. The demand is out there and the supply is limited but people are willing to throw everything at it to have their childhood dream cars
I want to make a factory that makes replica cars but are all out of carbon fiber and extremely light and powerful. If that happens in about 10 years, that's me. I've also calculated that those cars will be like 1200 lbs. I will also put Free valve techology on the engine and make insane n/a power.
I would love to help you with that. These replica cars can also have tube chassis that can make the car stiffer and be able to hold a lot more power without flexing. There can also be kits that have different engine mount options so the person that buys the kit can put whatever engine they want into it. A tube chassis, what ever engine you want and a carbon body? What more could you want?
It's whats kinda driven me from wanting to own cars like these. For the longest time I've wanted fds/supras/skylines, I grew up in the 90s. However......I DRIVE my cars and i drive them hard and I am just not willing to dump that much money into something that I will beat the hell out of. My garage right now has an IS300 for speed, an MR2 spyder for fun and an outback for DD. I love Ryan but he himself admitted that "thats why I'm trying to buy these cars" when talking about them rising in price because of lack of availability. Parts hoarding is the same thing, on a lower scale. At the end of the day, everyone is just looking to make money, some just like the cars themselves more than others. I have an IS300 and every single time I have to pay the supra tax on parts for my $5000 shitbox. Its just the way we roll.

I sold my 97 Silvia back in 2012 for $10,000. It was immaculate with tasteful mods. I recently saw the same car in worse condition for near $40,000. I cried.
Very true. Demand has gone through the roof. The 25 year rule in the US has meant alot of Japanese 90's imports have been exported from Australia. They're now much more expensive here as a result. Getrag V160's in Supra's and Skyline R34 GTR's are now really really expensive.
Bought my FC RX7 in 2012 for $800 & my boy bought an S13 240sx for $700 in 2010. $300 for a civic eg hatch in 2009. No way we'll ever see those prices again for even a shell.
New cars are insane money, and don’t provide the same emotional response as 80/90s stuff. People that grew up in that era now have money, and are scooping up cars they wanted as kids. Which drives the whole market up. This has been happening for ages.
This is why whenever I get new parts for my NA miata, I continue to save all my old parts. I give them to friends that NEED parts they cannot get ahold of. In 2003 I bought a 5spd, super clean S13 hatch for $1,200. It had good paint, tiny rust hole by the third brake light on the hatch but I fixed it. No dents, good interior. Those days are long gone. I built it up to a decent 380hp track car. But I wish I would’ve kept the interior and kept it streetable. I remember gutting it and throwing away and giving away good parts. (I was 18 and dumb) . I miss that car so much.
In 2019 I parted out a few of my chassis’s. I sold everything I had for normal prices. Nothing went over $100. I ran into more issues with guys who made a living parting cars than I did with people trying to buy my parts. Guys would do anything they could to block the sale of my items. I got banned from several jdm groups and pretty much outcast because I was not willing to gouge people on prices. I ran a pages called garage less racing where we sold all our parts for cheap. The issue with these cars is super simple. Folks are trying to earn a living by controlling a relatively worthless market. People make videos trying to boost the appeal of rotten, old, slow, unreliable, and generally unmaintained cars. Cars are meant to be used and tensile steel strength can degrade over time. So I’ll be selling all my cars for decent prices and I’ll move onto a newer chassis.
Great video! This is the reality, civic Eg vti here even if is beaten to death will cost you at least 4K euros with more than 200k km. CRXs are going crazy high here too, at minimum 5500 (beaten and abused). People don’t want new sports cars, everyone wants an old sports car. (Not everyone but you get the point haha)

The shop that I bought the engine from, the owner help me out because in Southern Cali those TAXES. 6 months later the same engine right now 3/1/2021 its now $ 4700 and the Notch SR20 is going for $6500 to $7500 depends were you get it. The demand for these engines are going up because of this trend Originality. Their a lot of people that want a 240sx but don't want other people's projects. If people that built 240sx with originality (Engine either KA24 or SR20) or very simple Mods (Body kit, Custom Headlights, Rims, and Clean Interior) those 240sx are going to be expensive. In Top Rank website as of today (3/1/2021) they have a 240sx for $27995 that really expensive.

And because of this video. Everything just went up about 5% is price.

Has anyone else noticed that the prices of all 80s and 90s BMWs have gone up solely because of E30 prices?

Pretty much. The days of fun cars as most everyone knew it is coming to a close. After that, no matter what it is, it'll be the wealthy controlling and exchanging the last of the dwindling resources of functional examples of any given model.
Most European cars are manual.
One thing I randomly think about is when cars reach 'near extinction' for lack of a better term. At some point, the number of S-chassis that people are simply preserving for enjoyment will outnumber the number of people who are building them simply to drift them.

Yea all these youtubers using the cash their channels generates to scoop up project cars and jack up prices for the rest of us. But at least you made a video about it. Which will give you more revenue. To keep doing what you’re doing and price us out of what used to be affordable cars. How meta.
It's almost as if we mocked boomers for their buy habits, Yet we millenials and Gen Z are no different in the end.
Wow! I wish I still had all 4 of my MR2's and my EVO 9. I would make bank on BAT!
lol telling people not to buy a limited car they want cause the price is too high. there's always someone willing to pay. supply and demand
I laughed at this too. If you want something, do better, don't be broke.
So glad I grabbed my e36 m3 and my 240sx when I did. I would never have a chance at affording them otherwise.
I can totally relate, just bought a s2000 two weeks ago and had to spend 240$ for some oem floor mats. lmfao
Honda is supposedly going to start making s2000 parts again. Crossing my fingers they will start making OEM hardtops.
@@Balo657 mine already has a carbon hardtop
@@kidcody1359 those are nice too but the fitment and nice headliner the oem hardtop had is so good. What year is your s2000?
@@Balo657 2001, 55k. yeah everytime i wash it water shoots through.
@@kidcody1359 nice, I'm sure you paid quite a bit for it. You can usually try to re adjust the seals or use shin etsu grease to expand the seals because they get dry and shrink from the sun
Wild how true this is. When i built my first drift car i listed a PERFECT s13 black interior for free in 2009? It sat for a month and eventually went to the dumpster.
2019 fiesta st only comes In standard 6 speed I have an enthusiast car and it was only 22k fully loaded mine is new when I got it
I'm thinking of getting one. Any advice?
I bought my 2014 Focus ST as the second owner for just under 13k about 5 years ago, now people are paying almost 19-20k for them with way more miles then when I got mine.
As far as ford's go.......the Fiesta ST is darn near the tippy top of fun, ford actually did something right......still can't build a pickup to save they're lives tho.
@@robbalinski1606 what? Ford has been making the best American pick ups for 100+ years? I’m not a Ford fan but you can’t disprove the fact they make the best trucks.
a fiesta st is a hotted up grocery-getter hatchback with slightly more power.
You're videos are so damn good. Something as simple as explaining supply and demand, you've somehow turned into a really well edited informational video
me wanting a clean decent mileage evo 9 for less than 25k fml
$25k? *I can’t even find one UNDER $32K!*
Y'all gotta check the Strictly Evo and DSM page. They're alot of them under 25k there
@@ThatMaximaKid what website is that?
@@3.0TMKreaZ it's a group in facebook
25k is literally the bottom for EVO 8s and 9s regardless of mileage and condition. Its weird.
I was looking into the market price for a 240Z once and found them at a minimum of 10K (in my region), then next year I was checking in again and they went for a minimum of the double (and it keeps climbing). I've since changed my mind about that being my 'dream car' when I can get a _much_ nicer retro 400Z (Z Proto) at probably the same price or cheaper than a good 240Z when I can afford it.
When I was in my late teens and early twenties (when F&F first dropped in theaters) young adults my age couldn’t afford 20-30 yr old sports cars, or any sports car for that matter. I’m not sure why this generation of young wanna-be tuners thinks they deserve affordable classics and cheap parts for them. Buy a cheap car, learn how to fix it, have fun with it and make your own generation of classics.
I knew, there's always good messages that Gears & Gasoline brings, that's why I think it's worth to watch!
No need to watch 9 minutes and 17 seconds...
1 sentence: Supply & demand
I dont know if its safe to say or not, but this channel has become not only the channel that we carguys want but also what we need .
