European cars, like BMW and Porsche, used super high quality parts to reach their engineering goals, and American cars used super powerful engines to appease the culture. It was doing the basics with the best you can get. Japanese cars have always felt like they wanted to take something ordinary, like a basic Civic or Lancer, and make the best out of what you had. Turbo your engine rather than increase displacement, engineer ways for your basic suspension to work to the highest potential. Drift because your turbo doesn't respond as quickly as a V8, and practice your driving skills so you don't lose because of your income. It was an automotive world for people who weren't rich or lived in the country with tons of space to work. It was a culture born in driveways and under jackstands, building a reputation rather than buying one.
Your observation is on point! Japanese Automakers are taxed on engine displacement, so the question became how to increase power without increasing engine size. This led to the development of Japanese turbo’ed 4 bangers and v tech and vvtl instead of the huge v8 engines that came out of 80’s+ America. Combine that with Japanese emissions law reform in the late 80’s, and you create a need for efficiency and sustainability. Japan needed to design their automobiles to be as efficient, cheap, and reliable as possible to avoid paying higher taxes, while still meeting early emissions standards!

Top job lads Edit: the guy with the 300zx is so humble
As proud as I am to be an American, there's simply nothing like the nostalgia and glory of JDM vehicles in my opinion. Honestly it's not even about who's fastest, it's about the unique craft and fun that these vehicles are able to provide that American cars are just missing. To each their own, you like what you like. But til the day I die JDM will be the way to go.
The Japanese are very different compared to us Americans. They care about quality. Here in America its all about the money. Don’t get me wrong us Americans have some fantastically engineered vehicles but nothing close to the Japanese. It not even just with cars the Japanese overall make very high quality products. Japanese cars will forever be my favorite and I hope we can keep this beautiful tradition for many years to come. Lets take care of these sacred vehicles because in the near future we might not even see some of them and it honestly scares me.
That's very dependent on era. Let's not forget that American companies bled racing in the 60s and designed road boats with intricate exterior and interior trim in the 50s. I'm sincerely interested in knowing if you've seen historical American cars, through each decade, cause I know I have, and some really show creative passion and appeal, not just money gobbling corporation.
Scott JS Like I said in my comment us Americans of course have had some fantastically engineered vehicles! Its just not how it used to be! I think ever since the 2000’s started its been all about making money instead of quality
@@sebz7248 How so? Americans make some of the highest performing cars for the lowest cost in the world. Look at the Camaro SS 1LE and Viper ACR. I'm more of an import guy myself but I think it's silly to say that American sports cars are lower quality in today's age.
Very relatable video. I have an interest in all Japanese cars, but have been obsessed with 80s and 90s Toyotas since I was about 10 or 11. I went to rally stages here in Ireland where almost every competitor was driving a Subaru or Mitsubishi, but a couple of guys were competing in Celica GT-Fours and Corollas which were so different looking to the 4 door Imprezas and Evos. I fell in love with the GT-Four and now drive a 1994 JDM ST205 which is my pride and joy. I also have my sights set on adding a JDM SW20 MR2 to my garage next year.
It's good to see that my crew and I aren't the only ones obsessed about Best Motoring and JDM cars. Seeing a GTR or a Supra, even at this age makes me feel like a child meeting my childhood heroes! like you said, we'd probably never get tired of having them in our lives.. My fsmily's Accord Euro R is such a big part of my life, I feel its an extension of me. It's engine really speaks to me. It feels like its got a soul! Hope everyone feels the same about something in their lives!
I've always had a soft spot for the early 90s Nissan 300ZX. It was one of the first cars that made me go "whhoooaaa," just by looking at it. And red. It had to be red. 😎
You never grow out of it if it truly is your passion. I'm 48 years old and have always been a Honda fan. My uncle had a little Civic hatchback in the 80s with a header and a Weber carburetor and I love that car. That's what got me hooked and I still own and drive Hondas and currently have a EM1. It never goes away if you really enjoy it

I’m 40yo and Japanese cars have impacted me since 1998 when I saw a yellow eg hatchback and s13 getting off the highway and I found myself slowing down in my own car and staring until I couldn’t see them anymore. And since then it’s been those long creepy nights looking for parts that aren’t in my direct reach. I purchased a set of sw388 spoon wheels in 2001 and it took 6 months to get them. I’ve modeled my life around these cars and always brushed off the shit talking from American car guys who I don’t think would ever understand the precision put into those “plastic 4 bangers”. And now you find a lot of those American car makers are making their cars more in Japanese car enthusiast interests. Squeezing out ridiculous horsepower out of something that didn’t make that much power 10-15 years ago when Japanese cars were putting out more horsepower per liter n/a motors. I find myself missing those friends I made along the way with those cars. Some are still in contact and some are just really good memories when life was simple and driving was really fun and not a competition. Just enjoying what you built and not an Instagram heart. When black wheels were taboo and watching videos about cars with people speaking in a language you wished you could speak. Great video and thank you for the memories
The combination of sad music and emotional talks from owners made me realize, I really need to save my money if I need to achieve my dream of buying a R32.
Fantastic video, tugged at my heart strings for sure! Growing up I have always loved 90's Japanese cars, and I would argue are the best the world has ever seen. What I would give for that gorgeous red Z32!! Possibly my favorite car of all time.. Great work, thanks so much!!
I can relate..... I've owned 3 Civics and an Integra, JDM parts on all and two had swaps. Now I'm in my 40's with a job, wife and kids. I couldn't ride my motorcycle to work anymore so I bought a Chevy Cruze (it is a hatch and 6 speed). The Cruze is reliable and gets good mileage, but it does nothing for my soul. I miss the howl of VTEC and knowing I was in the "Honda club." Trust me I understand!
Why do people think a job, wife and kids mean you can't get a decent car..... Buy an sti forester or stagea, crown, 4 door skyline, Evo wagon.... There are loads of options
Z32 300ZX is just such a timeless design. The last one was produced almost 20 years ago. Among the ranks of the FD RX7, NSX, Supra, R32 and R34 Skylines. The era of Pacific muscle.

This video hits home in so many ways. Thank you! I don’t think I will ever outgrow the love for Japanese sports cars. With all the money in the world my garage would still be full of Japanese cars. NSX, GTR, RX-7, Z, WRX, Evo, Supra, S2000, AE86, BRZ I could go on for a while but so many iconic cars all from one place.

Japanese cars is the reason why I got interested in the automotive industry and lead me to take automotive course, especially the 90s and early 2000s Japanese cars theyre just so innovative and creative with the design and engineering of their cars that no one can top it theyre just so damn good!
When he said that owning Japanese cars that are 25 years old is like facing your childhood superhero I could relate. Well said sir. Grew up on nfsu, nfsu2 and even as a little child I had so much love for these cars I always considered (and I still do) them as the best cars ever. Here in my country is much harder to get one of these but I won’t ever give up on the burning passion inside me that leads me to getting one of these masterpieces! Beautiful video
Another well made video bro! I've always been in love with Japanese cars since a little kid. Owning one now is a dream come true to me even though its not the lowest mileage, most perfect, it still tickles my heart strings every time I open up my garage.
1997 summer, I was at Toyota Headquarter for an internship, in Toyota City Aichi prefecture Japan. They had this whole stack of Best Motoring VHS tapes in their library. Even though I speak very little Japanese, I will go at lunch time, pop those tapes into the VHS player and watch them. The 1990's, golden age of Japanese sports cars.
The thing I love most about Japanese cars is, just like you were saying about the passion, but for me, it's the combination of performance and reliability. Yes, you could argue that may not be the case for some Subaru engines or rotaries, but I think of Supras, Skylines, Hondas, and just the effort that goes into developing those high-performance engines is just astonishing. Thanks for the video, guys!
“Auto” was my third word as well. Born and raised in Stuttgart, I have nothing but respect for the Japanese automotive industry and the Japanese people. A people and culture as strong as a Katana: forged in fire out of many layers, sharp, tough, hard, but flexible enough to be virtually unbreakable. Mazda: Made in Hiroshima. Daimler and Porsche made in Stuttgart.

Hey I’m not sure if you made a video on this but i feel like as a 13 year old walking around the car show taking picture and I feel like no one want to talk.I know most people would think oh it’s just another 13 year old that thinks he knows everything. But I don’t and all I want to do is learn and talk about cars.I have talked to people about cars for like 2 hours and I love it.All I want to do is go a car show and talk about imports but no one wants to talk to a 13 year old.
Try being the one who starts the conversation. If someone or a few people are around a car that you are interested in just ask. I can guarantee you that they would love to help you learn and share stories about their car with you. We're one big family. Talking about our cars is something we love to do. I won't lie though, there are some people who are just plain rude and you can't take it to heart. The majority of people you'll meet and speak with are genuine and are probably excited you love cars too. Next time you're at a show, don't be afraid to just ask questions. You'll learn more than you think and you'll meet amazing people along the way. :)

First Car was a 82 FD RX7 sold to me by a good friend! Unfortunately, I had issues with the car and no money to rebuild the 12a rotary. I sold it back to my friends friend for a good price because I wanted that car in good hands. Currently, I own a 90 Toyota Pick up. It's not the fastest thing out there, but for that little 22re pushing just over 100hp, it's pretty damn fun to drive in. It is my pride and joy at the moment and it takes me to a very special place when I'm behind the wheel.
Adored this video. I've never been more proud of my little MX5 NB, she's a beauty, and so much fun to drive. She's 22 years old and I feel like I grew up with her, she was my beginner's car in Need for Speed Underground, and now I have one and it still baffles me. I grew up with Gran Turismo, The Fast And The Furious, and Need for Speed, these cars are things I'd never thought I'd be able to have. And now, every time I walk over to Clementine (my MX5, she's orange) I always have a silly grin on my face :) And one day it will be a R34 or a RX7, these cars are timeless.
I think the Prius deserves some love. I mean, it's not fast at all, but that's not what it was built to be. It was built to be reliable and fuel efficient, which it does extremely well. Cars should be judged by if they're good at what they were designed for. Like, the Nissan Skyline GT-R is awesome because it's extremely fast. The Toyota Prius is awesome because it's inexpensive and efficient.
Amazing work once again! I recently replaced my 2008 era MacBook Pro for the latest gen MacBook Air. I'm finally able to experience G&G in 4K - completely in awe!

@steezyskids sounds to me like you got a molested and abused base model but idk.. these can do basically what the Evo can and they can take 4G63 swaps as well soooooo.. second fastest 3000GT is 4G63 swapped anyways🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️
300zx is the most aesthetically timeless Japanese car i can think of. It’s retro future
Also, FD RX-7.
even the s2000 looks like it came out this year 2022
I totally get the cliché of Japanese car enthusiasts just being fanboys and wanting a million horsepower supras but to me there's so much more its just enjoying a kind of car in a way that makes you feel passionate to the way it looks, the aesthetic, the mechanics and most importantly the drive this video sums that up quite well. Top job lads
Edit: the guy with the 300zx is so humble
Joe Slater that’s why a bone stock first gen Miata is my favorite car of all time

Yeah
The Japanese are very different compared to us Americans. They care about quality. Here in America its all about the money. Don’t get me wrong us Americans have some fantastically engineered vehicles but nothing close to the Japanese. It not even just with cars the Japanese overall make very high quality products. Japanese cars will forever be my favorite and I hope we can keep this beautiful tradition for many years to come. Lets take care of these sacred vehicles because in the near future we might not even see some of them and it honestly scares me.
And yet Americans complain about the plastic interior in imports
That's very dependent on era. Let's not forget that American companies bled racing in the 60s and designed road boats with intricate exterior and interior trim in the 50s. I'm sincerely interested in knowing if you've seen historical American cars, through each decade, cause I know I have, and some really show creative passion and appeal, not just money gobbling corporation.
Sean Lim Hey if anything alot of our Interiors are plastic as well. Especially Ford and Chevy
That Z32 is so aesthetic from every angle😍
I love how your videos have a story to it. And you can see the ammount of effort put into a video with every new upload!
That 300zx is absolutely perfect, my favorite of the 90's Japanese cars and that man really did that thing justice. Good job sir
This makes me miss my 1990 300zx so much definitely can feel the love and passion awesome video
It never goes away if you really enjoy it
Im a 14 yrs old that loves jdm but too young to own a car... im afraid that if i will grow up... these 90s jdm cars will be no more ... it is getting and getting more rare and more expensive... i wish that in the near future i can still buy my r32 gtr
I'm young too and I hope I can get an nsx in the future
By the time you have money for R32 GT-R, they have banned petrol cars.. so GG have fun

It's amazing how beautiful R32s look....
Yall seriously are one of the few channels that truly get the bond of a person and their car. I love watching your videos because you can tell they are made by true petrolheads.
Chris Driver is my hero. I actually attended the last open house. When I get the money I plan to check Driver Motorsports first.
Those 2 shots at 12:46 are just amazing. I remember watching Eric's wrx vid, awesome how much you guys have grown.
Adicti0nsgaming really want those as a background...
Could just screen shot it, it's in 4k but TH-cam does have its compression :/
Its videos like this that bring the itch back in me to want to build the jdm car ive always wanted. That car for me is a Nissan Pulsar GTi.
The combination of sad music and emotional talks from owners made me realize,
I really need to save my money if I need to achieve my dream of buying a R32.
Dude, go for it!! You live your life once. Btw, I am on the same route even though my dream car isn't japanese, but who cares dream is a dream
I miss the howl of VTEC and knowing I was in the "Honda club."
Trust me I understand!
3 Civics, with Spoon engines?
Ratel.H Badger I wish!!!! Maybe through as Mugen in for sure excitement.
Why do people think a job, wife and kids mean you can't get a decent car..... Buy an sti forester or stagea, crown, 4 door skyline, Evo wagon.... There are loads of options

Z32, RX7 FD, Supra, 3000GT, Lancer Evo, NSX = pure sexy
That intro hit close to home. I have a real car addiction problem
Dude I spend atleast an hour a day looking at all the new posts on forums etc for parts for my cars, it's a compulsion. What if I miss a rare jdm part I never knew about or something life ending like that lol
What about Hakosuka, Kenmary, GX71, GX81, Cima, Celsior, etc?
This is literally one of my all time favorite videos on TH-cam ♥ and I get exactly the same face expressions watching how spiritually and beautifully these cars were made. Gears and Gasoline as Always the best videos, I just arrived here too late I guess but still.
Everyone forget the 3000gt man. Guy who lives down the street from me owns a 99 VR4. Which is super rare in the states. I swear I need to knock on his door one day and give him my number if he ever wants to sell it.
Demetrios b where I live, theres 2 vr4 3000gts and one FTO base model 3kgt and I couldn’t be more happy, they’re such bomb cars
sorry your comments old. But your right 3000gt's are bomb ass cars and i picked up an SL about a year ago. Still catching up on the maintenance of it. Not the fastest thing but it's still fun as hell to drive with the 5-speed. Also kinda cool having dudes in 2017 corvettes going that car is beautiful man. Mines a pearl yellow 3000gt it sticks out were ever it goes.
This is precisely what our car culture is all about, and what we try to capture with our young series. Simply put: beautifully done, gentlemen!
Those DSMs in the beginning 💪🏼
That 300zx is one of the most beautiful 300zx's I have ever seen

It's a passion, it doesn't need an explanation. And i think the car you own represents who you are.
Again a really nice video!!! Grtz from Belgium
300zx is one of the nicest looking cars imo
Japanese cars is the reason why I got interested in the automotive industry and lead me to take automotive course, especially the 90s and early 2000s Japanese cars theyre just so innovative and creative with the design and engineering of their cars that no one can top it theyre just so damn good!
Whenever I think of cars, I always come here
When he said that owning Japanese cars that are 25 years old is like facing your childhood superhero I could relate.
JDM cars are SuperCOOL car... i own a 1989 corolla sedan .here in Philippines
your car is not jdm. it's usdm. it originally came with a left hand drive dash.
Bathing Ape93 Eh, the term JDM has become hella broad as time went on. Just any Japanese car, that’s JDM now.
Another well made video bro! I've always been in love with Japanese cars since a little kid. Owning one now is a dream come true to me even though its not the lowest mileage, most perfect, it still tickles my heart strings every time I open up my garage.
I just finished restoring a 91 300zx tt that I found last winter. You’d have to show up with $50k+ in cold hard cash to convince me to part with it.

That 300zx is gorgeous!

I picked up a 73 240z and man it is fun the smell the feedback from it and the look get everyone (car enthusiast or not) to love it.
Ben Dooley thanks bro on the advice
Just don't act like a jumped up kid, be at the maturity of the people you are talking to and most people will be more than happy to have a chat

Such a great video. Gears and Gasoline is my favorite TH-cam channel. The videos are very well put together, but still organic enough they feel authentic. They’re informative, sometimes humorous, but you can sense the passion behind it. I’m glad they haven’t sold out the typical TH-cam mantra.

"Race gutted" lmao it's just so funny to me. 😂😂
People saying "great vid" and the video was only out for 30 seconds
Seimor Skinner always a 99.9% chance that they upload a banger. Never disappoints.
And now, every time I walk over to Clementine (my MX5, she's orange) I always have a silly grin on my face :)
And one day it will be a R34 or a RX7, these cars are timeless.

you can never be TOO obsessed with cars BURN THAT PRIUS
I think the Prius deserves some love. I mean, it's not fast at all, but that's not what it was built to be. It was built to be reliable and fuel efficient, which it does extremely well. Cars should be judged by if they're good at what they were designed for. Like, the Nissan Skyline GT-R is awesome because it's extremely fast. The Toyota Prius is awesome because it's inexpensive and efficient.
