  • This gorgeous Victorian home was built in 1880 and will almost certainly be demolished. This house is owned by the government of Canada and is in the way of a huge project. Sadly many other beautiful houses like this have already been demolished in the surrounding area.

We need a charity to preserve these old buildings made of brick. These new ones are pretty much made of paper and won’t last. You can’t even make a brick house anymore.

When even the government itself is in league to annihilate these pieces of history, nothing can get in their way, especially not charity unfortunately

I have drove past this house many many times over the years,,, the Airport they never built so many farms demolished and cleared.
The 407 also ruined the area all these old buildings and farms were still being lived in and used in the early 1990s progress sucks.
From this point all the way past Markham destroyed by development and progress.
    Thank you for documenting this

Thanks for the video.... the concrete tank in the basement was a cistern which would have originally collected rainwater in the early days before electricity and indoor plumbing. There was likely a hand pump at the kitchen sink to utilize the cistern water in the early days. 👍

It's ashamed that most people now a days do not appreciate old houses. They want to tear them down and replace them with some modern junk. Old houses original woodwork was made by hand. You don't find that any more.

11:20 that's called a cistern (water reservoir.) You would gather rain water, river water, and/or pump well water. From the cistern, the water would be pumped to the kitchen and bathroom. Once electric well pumps came into being, cisterns were no longer used.
Prior to pumpable cisterns, there were gravity cisterns, which resided in the attic. When you opened a faucet, gravity would do the work of transporting the water to where it was needed.

@@urbexontario73 You're most welcome. A few years back we purchased a 60s farmhouse, and I was surprised to see an old cistern in the basement. It hadn't been used in many years, so when we renovated, I converted the cistern into an exercise pit. Now the space is usable again, instead of just a dry hole in the floor.

In Britain we have cold water tanks/cisterns, my Dad moved ours up into the attic to improve the water pressure. Before, it was a galvanised smaller tank next to the bathroom, and he replaced it with a black plastic circular tank. As far as cold weather was concerned, we never had it freeze on us.

Too bad it was left to rot! They can be moved to another location and renovated. I'll take it if it is free and comes with land. I could clean it up and live in it in MN. If anyone wants to gift it to me...I would love to own a house, even a "fixer upper" like that one.

I like the staircase and the bathtub. I like those bigger bathtubs these old houses had. It seems that all or most of these older homes, someone painted all the wood trim. I wonder why people didn't just leave that as the beautiful wood? People have been "paint happy."

This is a home, not a house. It actually makes me mad it, and any others like it, are being demolished. It not only needs to be saved but restored to its original splendor and lived in by people who will love it and take care of it. Sad it's not possible the past residents can't be talked to in person since the original owners till the latest to hear their stories of their memories of living in it.

Those ceiling tiles were the thing in the 1950's. The problem with those old homes with lath and plaster is they were not insulated. If they are in an area with cold or freezing winters the cost of heating them can be astronomical. The floors buckling and being uneven is most likely from settling over the years or a foundation issue. The ball light fixture on a pole was from the 1960's. Most of the original wood trim has also been painted over.

Nothing like physically destroying history. I'm so sorry it is being torn down. More than likely for newer, modern homes. What happened to just reduce-reuse-recycle? It isn't on a register apparently, so they could really save that home for far less than building a bunch of homes (depending on how cheap the materials for the new homes are.) At the very least, save some of the material; people love parquet flooring, especially original.
As a antiques, old soul, it hurts me to see how much our younger generations growing up are not going to see in-person. Watching a story about old homes is one thing; seeing one and actually touching the house, and experience the textures isd another. I'm sorry to those, and to that town. It's happening all over the world. We just don't care about history anymore.😔

under the red & white tiles was luan, a floor leveler. i had to lay it in my 1890's bathroom floor. it had been a bedroom, & was put in half for the bathroom. next to it was the other half, too small for anything but a tight office. i hope they salvage those historic features. i wish i could've taken my original 1930's cabinets from my last. house, they were so sturdy & spacious. i think the pulls were original too, they were gorgeous. they had been painted ove many times. i finally couldn't take it anymore & found out it was pretty easy to clean them up. the top layers peeled off easy, the bottom layers were oil paint so they took a bit more work. they looked so beautiful after. they were a flawless chrome with swirls.
