  • My brother, Andrew and I bought an old abandoned house in Portugal and spent the next 18 months, along with my wife Cristina and our good friend Detlev, renovating it back to new.
    Not going to lie, it was tough, but we got there.
    Watch the transformation through my eyes as we went full steam at taking on tasks well out of our comfort zones.
    This is a story of perseverance and determination, that I am incredibly proud of our achievement.
    My brother has his own TH-cam channel: / @blondguy where you can see his side of the renovation.
    Although we did many jobs together, we also did jobs on our own. This is my version of The village house renovation.
    Thanks for watching and if you enjoyed, please consider subscribing. This goes a long way in enabling us to continue the journey.

    Thanks for the wonderful comments. There seems to be a reoccurring opinion from a few people that the house should have been demolished and rebuilt.
    The simple answer is, you can’t. Rules and regulations apply.
    Hope that clears that up.

      Strange that the rules would prevent from knocking down the house and rebuilding from scratch. It seems a ridiculous rule. Nevertheless, a job well done …and what was the cost? BTW great camera work and music is good too!

    This demonstrates what skill goes into building. I think people often view construction work as fairly menial labor. This video perfectly illustrates that builders are truly craftsmen and artisans!

    • @ansidhe
      @ansidhe 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +69

      It’s very easy to totally mess up, waste materials and labour, as well as break expensive tools if someone doesn’t know the ropes. But an experienced craftsman can achieve miracles - as seen in the video 👍🏻🤩

      Yes, exactly. I have had to work with a few clowns over the years who came into renovation from a non trade background, but thought they knew it all, with their ‘uni’ degree.
      You can’t be a dimwit and build like these guys.

      Its not like they carved statues and marble pillars. Construction is as menial labor as it gets. Hard and backbraking work, nothing else.

You have done an impressive and wonderful job, but for me it was a bit painful to see the old look made of stones and terracotta disappear in favour of the more modern one. As I said though, it is clear that you know what you are doing.

      You do know cathedrals are made of rocks, right? Artisans were engineers. The only thing making those walls fall apart was not caring for the structure, because as the roof fell apart, humidity, wind and non harmonious weight distribution made it crumble.

    I am watching this slack jawed. I have a lot of familiarity with the construction of American style homes but this is something new to me. Beyond that, the vision and the unending energetic work and willingness to go big is mind-boggling. I never thought I'd see somebody who would say to themselves, " let's renovate this house and tuen it upside down entirely, one room at a time.". You took down the roofs, you took up the floors, you replaced the beams, you put down new floors, you took down walls.... It just didn't seem to end. I lost faith in your vision when the courtyard was an absolute disaster. But just before you put up the words "We have a plan ", on the screen, I decided to trust you a little bit longer. And by the way you're rendering was absolutely beautiful. 💯🏆🎶🎶🎶Lovely results. Outstanding. 👏👏👏

I can truly appreciate all the work that went into this. Not to mention the broad spectrum of talent held by your small team of folks doing work that would usually involve a small army of specialized tradesmen. Structural, roofing, plumbing, electrical, masonry, tile, counter tops, cabinetry, windows, sheet rock, painting, insulation and probably a few things I missed. You think this is modern! You need to see our Portuguese neighbours homes, they make ours look like it’s from the dark ages!

    •  13 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      I was taken by the same feeling watching the video, but I tried not to be too fundamentalist about it. The house was abandoned, it was restored into a livable home. Many here defend that they should have demolished it, which is appalling to me. Rebuilding a home in the Portuguese style is a difficult thing that not many can do, and it comes at the cost of some daily convenience for a potential non-Portuguese inhabitant. For a home like this to be rebuilt in the original style we'd need to live in another world, one where the know-how to do these things wouldn't be so concentrated anyway.

    I cannot believe people would even think of wanting to level this house. I’ve collected and sold antiques over the years and the whole idea is to preserve what can never be duplicated or replaced. What a huge project to undertake but so worth the blood, sweat and tears and in Portugal! I cannot wait to see more.

    • @eeliejun
      @eeliejun 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Tbh, it is for for a couple of reasons people would level it. Cost is one of them. A lot of times it is cheaper and simpler to start again, two is the layout not really working and 3 is that the bricks are old so structure problems can happen in the future because the brick is just decaying. Making it cost more in the future.
      Not saying it is a bad idea to renovate but sometimes stuff can't be saved or fixed.

    • @latebloomerabroad
      @latebloomerabroad 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      At the beginning, I thought it looked like the inside was in much better shape than the outside suggested. But I can see that it would be cheaper to tear it down and build new, if the regulations allowed it. But to me, the entire reason to do this is to keep the old charm that can be saved. And of course, you want the home to blend in with the surrounding homes on the outside at least.

    First off, thank you for coming to Portugal, period. Secondly, thank you for picking an abandoned and degraded home and renovate it, giving it new life! You could simply come to Portugal and buy a new house, but instead you bought a house on ruins and restored it. That is freaking awesome, you're trully skilled and I thank you for doing that! I wish our government would do the same, restore old homes and make them available, because we have such a huge housing problem that the only way me and my family found to get our space was to move to Badajoz (Spain), where the market, although getting worse, is still way better than Portugal's.

    Thanks so much for showing this to the world what an honour it was to watch your hard work and craftsmanship. There is not much more satisfying a thing then to watch a family work hard together.

    Stunning transformation. I admire anyone that takes it on and makes something old new again. I get tired of the continual tearing down the old and building new with less quality or character. I think you did an amazing job and I love that you kept a few of the original touches and reused them. I think you're all amazing and did a great job. Bravo!!

    There was obvious care and attention to detail going on here, and this is my first time watching you guys, so I didn't know you were doing this for someone else. So I was a bit disappointed not to see you relax there and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

      Hi, we bought it to sell it. That was the plan but I do have our house we are working on that we are keeping. Take a look at our other videos.

    Wow...just wow!
    I have always wished I knew how to be a craftsman like your brother and you clearly are. I can't twist two wires together... Absolutely wonderful work. I hope you and your family enjoy that place for generations. God bless.

      twisting wires is easy. First you hold one wire while you eat your sandwich then when your done with the sandwich you clean up the area of crumbs and go get yourself a drink. Oh. go get the other wire and watch tv for an hour. No need to hurry. Where was I? Go to the pub and tell your friends how hard you been working . Done! Wasn't that easy my dear friend?

    Thanks for restoring our landscape. The final result looks amazing and really captures Portuguese tradition. With these ridiculous salaries and taxes, regular Portuguese folks don't (and never will) have the capability to do something like this. Hope you enjoy your time here.

      It’s sad that the people of Portugal wouldn’t be able to rebuild and own homes like this in their own land. They did a beautiful job but I wonder who can afford the home now?
