Brothers Buy An Abandoned House In Portugal 18 Months Start To Finish Timelapse

- My brother, Andrew and I bought an old abandoned house in Portugal and spent the next 18 months, along with my wife Cristina and our good friend Detlev, renovating it back to new.
Not going to lie, it was tough, but we got there.
Watch the transformation through my eyes as we went full steam at taking on tasks well out of our comfort zones.
This is a story of perseverance and determination, that I am incredibly proud of our achievement.
My brother has his own TH-cam channel: / @blondguy where you can see his side of the renovation.
Although we did many jobs together, we also did jobs on our own. This is my version of The village house renovation.
Thanks for watching and if you enjoyed, please consider subscribing. This goes a long way in enabling us to continue the journey.

Thanks for the wonderful comments. There seems to be a reoccurring opinion from a few people that the house should have been demolished and rebuilt.
The simple answer is, you can’t. Rules and regulations apply.
Hope that clears that up.
Just wondering how old the original house is? And did you find any treasures?
😂
@@kagee6889 roughly 100 years old
@The-Quinta as much demo you all did, it seems you basically rebuilt the place one wall and one floor board at a time. Lol that was amazing to see! Absolutely enjoyed it. The end result was beautiful.
Strange that the rules would prevent from knocking down the house and rebuilding from scratch. It seems a ridiculous rule. Nevertheless, a job well done …and what was the cost? BTW great camera work and music is good too!
This demonstrates what skill goes into building. I think people often view construction work as fairly menial labor. This video perfectly illustrates that builders are truly craftsmen and artisans!
It’s very easy to totally mess up, waste materials and labour, as well as break expensive tools if someone doesn’t know the ropes. But an experienced craftsman can achieve miracles - as seen in the video 👍🏻🤩
Yes, exactly. I have had to work with a few clowns over the years who came into renovation from a non trade background, but thought they knew it all, with their ‘uni’ degree.
You can’t be a dimwit and build like these guys.
Its not like they carved statues and marble pillars. Construction is as menial labor as it gets. Hard and backbraking work, nothing else.
You made speed of this vdo so fast that nothing is undetstandable.
Kann ich nicht bestätigen. Im Gegenteil, viele bewundern gute Handwerker und wissen auch, wie rar solche Leute sind! Vor allem die, die so ziemlich alles können. Habe ich immer schon bewundert!
Wow! As a longtime general contractor who has remodeled many old buildings, I am in awe of this undertaking. The vision needed, along with the patience required, is beyond most folks' ability to comprehend. Well done!
Thank you ☺️
Is it a dumb idea to try and do this myself with no construction experience?
@@RanchKings no! We did.
I love this remodel. My favorite on the internet so far by far!!❤
What amazing work you guys did! Absolutely stunning❤❤❤❤
There's something so much more satisfying about restoring an old house than having a new one built.
This family took a building that could have been a backdrop in a Fallout video game and turned it into something that looks like it was built yesterday. Well done.
Absolutely, takes probably more thought and skill as you have to identify what your options are, it also shows a respect to the original builders, their hard work still stands and will go on to serve as a lovely home for hopefully many more decades!
*As someone that works in Demolition, excavation, contracting and services installation, and has built their own home themselves, I can honestly say, Congratulations and much RESPECT. I can see the hard work, passion and attention to detail in this project. Also great job at editing and showing the progress*
Thanks for sharing, that’s very kind of you and appreciated 😎👍🏻
Same here in excavation so I'm looking at utilities, plumbing. We did a lot of bore work for fibre optics
Those guys know what hard work is ..amazing work, to be congratulated
Two brothers did more in 18 months than most crews can get done in the same time. Awesome job! You guys obviously know your stuff!
Thank you soo much 😊
My parents got a 2 story vacation home built, including a driveway and a back patio and landscaping down to the river bank in about 7 months. The brothers in the video did an amazing job in 18 months, but companies would be out of business if it took that long
what do you mean two brothers?
there's at least 4 different people working on this remodel/rebuild
And don't forget Cynthia 😊
Not only two!! At least 3 or 4
I really admire people with this wide array of skills and massive work ethic. Well done, looks like a really nice home!
Thank you very much!
Yes I agree
Wow😂❤
What a fabulous group of skilled workers. Amazing outcome.
So will the local tax authorities - many of them realize too. Good luck - you will get a real "welcome to Portugal" - not the way you expect.
losing that arch was a heartbreaker! what a lovely project... and it is wonderful to save an old house vs knocking it all down.
I have nothing but admiration for people who can do this...respect and thank you x
Thank you ☺️
My brother was a carpenter and I worked in the trades for a number of years. I would help him remodel houses which he would flip and eventually he built two new construction homes which I helped with extensively. Now my brother is gone and I am retired on disability but those times are some of the best memories of my life. Great times, and I miss him dearly.
Sorry for your loss... and sending you both love and light 🕊
Wonderful that you and your brother created such fantastic memories.
Thanks for sharing! 😊👍🏻
I'm so sorry for your loss, you worked as a great team and you have some wonderful memories. I really enjoyed watching your film, you, your brother, wife and others are true craftspeople and you should be proud of what you created.
Truly a Blessing. Know that you guys made the world a better place. Thank You
Once building gets in yr blood youre hooked. Sorry for loss of your brother. All the best.
The knowledge, experience, imagination, energy and BALLs to do this are simply insane. I would hope and expect the neighbours to be over the moon. Absolutely tremendous. Congratulations, well done. I can't say enough !
And don’t forget about other 2 important factors to have ; time and money 💵 lots of it 😉
@@ivanporras4478 And if you have it, its money and time well spent......................................
What he said!🙄
It was painful for me to see how a house made of 100% natural materials, stone walls, adobo, which maintain freshness in summer and heat in winter, with clay tiles, became a monstrosity of cement, concrete, metal cavities. , prefabricated materials, imitation tiles and imitation roof tiles... that will keep their occupants slaves to the air conditioning and heating 365 days a year
Can you tell us how much you spent on this Reno? So appreciate your work. That’s priceless.
It was so satisfying to watch it, I saw it whole without skipping, didn't realised when 45 minutes passed away, I feel the dead house would be so grateful to you for giving it a new life, may God bless you. Amen 🤍🤍🤍
Thank you very much 😊👍🏼
you are a legend,u deserve a million subscribers
Thanks ☺️
Didn't think I'd manage to watch 44 mins of a renovation video, but you had me captivated! Excellent job. Enjoy your home and Portugal 🇵🇹 ❤️
Did you watch the "whole thing"? They handed the keys off to someone else at the end.
That's the way you fix a house in Europe ❤❤
Waste of time and money. Still in a crap part of the world.
Me too absolutely mesmerising.🎉🎉🎉
Skipped to the end
I’m glad the TH-cam algorithm led me here. It’s a plessure to watch a wonderful family memory!
You are so kind
Wow! I am shocked and amazed how you redid this house! I could not imagine how those rock walls were even standing! Everything is very beautiful and clean! I bet the people in the town really love what you did here! What a hard working talented team you have! You turned your vision for this house into a reality! Well done you all!
Thank you so much! 😊
This is one of, if not the most spectacular renovations I have ever seen. Even more incredible it that you did it all in just 18 months with a small team. I can truly appreciate all the work that went into this. Not to mention the broad spectrum of talent held by your small team of folks doing work that would usually involve a small army of specialized tradesmen. Structural, roofing, plumbing, electrical, masonry, tile, counter tops, cabinetry, windows, sheet rock, painting, insulation and probably a few things I missed. Job well done to your team of men and women. It is something to truly be proud of. Had someone shown me this job at the start, I would have run away screaming! 🙂
Thanks Roger 😊
Did you have an architect to design the house, before the renovations began?
No
As a licensed contractor for years, I have so much respect for you and your team. I would have never taken the risk and time to start this project. You did absolutely amazing great work💪🏻
That’s very kind of you. Thank you! 😊👍🏻
I just love watching smart, talented people who can do so much. My heart just sings when I see such people. Great job guys
Thank you ☺️
Every now and again I come across a youtube video that I can't stop watching, this is one of them. What a lovely result, your hard work and determination paid off!
Thank you so much!😊
I would have gladly watched another hour, this transformation was so satisfying
Alder men r working hard as youth .God bless your hands
Waaw beautiful hard work
Thanks I liked .
My father was a general contractor in the US. He started out as a plastering contractor. It’s been decades since I’ve seen anyone doing any plastering indoors. I have helped build many homes and remodeled, countless others. I kept looking for you guys to make a mistake, You didn’t. I feel like remodeling is much harder than new construction. At the end of your TH-cam, my shoulders, back and knees aches for you. BRAVO!!! 😀
👍👍
My lungs ache from watching this haha all those cut tiles and bricks and not a single mask worn 🤯
@@REDmanchester1989 9:52
@REDmanchester1989 they WERE wearing masks.
It’s only people like you who are doing anything to save our rural communities. Beautiful job and thank you for your service🙏
Our pleasure! 😀
Thank you!
To me, this renovation is the definition of a NIGHTMARE! I admire your patience, energy, craftsmanship & attention to details pulling this through!👏🏻 The result is just incredible! 🥳
Thank you very much!
I started watching this, fully expecting to leave it after a couple of minutes but I could not take my eyes off it and finished up 45 mins later in complete awe of what you guys achieved. Incredible work!!👏👏🍻
Wait, I didn’t realize it was 45 minutes long!
Same. Stayed for the whole journey.
same here! i wanted to see the tour of the final project tho
Same here!
I cannot believe people would even think of wanting to level this house. I’ve collected and sold antiques over the years and the whole idea is to preserve what can never be duplicated or replaced. What a huge project to undertake but so worth the blood, sweat and tears and in Portugal! I cannot wait to see more.
Tbh, it is for for a couple of reasons people would level it. Cost is one of them. A lot of times it is cheaper and simpler to start again, two is the layout not really working and 3 is that the bricks are old so structure problems can happen in the future because the brick is just decaying. Making it cost more in the future.
Not saying it is a bad idea to renovate but sometimes stuff can't be saved or fixed.
At the beginning, I thought it looked like the inside was in much better shape than the outside suggested. But I can see that it would be cheaper to tear it down and build new, if the regulations allowed it. But to me, the entire reason to do this is to keep the old charm that can be saved. And of course, you want the home to blend in with the surrounding homes on the outside at least.
@@eeliejun going by the looks of the brick and mortar that was exposed I bet the original construction was at least over 200 years old, and it seems also like there were at least a couple of previous renovations in the past.
How much of the original building was left alone and not replaced? Are you preserving 23%?
My new neighbors are Englishmen which bought an old house since the last owner passed, i was still a kid. Now they renovated the house and never remember it being so beautiful. I'm so happy people like you are sprouting new life into these old homes once again. It just feels right 🏚️🏡
Wonderful that you chose to (or had to) restore the old style building, fits the village perfectly. Such a cool project!
My grandfather taught me the importance of taking care to do things properly. Your work here is inspirational!
What an absolutely stunning job you guys did on this restoration. The time and craftsmanship that was put into this project, most of us will never have any idea of the sweat and labor that was exerted into creating this masterpiece. I am in awe of the final product that this old worn and weathered home became. Well done, well done!!
Waste of time and money. Still in a crap part of the world.
That was so amazing to watch the transformation, I was a bit sad when it ended. Congratulations to whomever gets to live in this beautifully crafted home.
You guys and woman did an awesome job of bringing not a house - but a home back to life.
My husband, myself, our son and his wife bought a 90 y/o home that is going to need some minor repairs and sprucing up.
Unfortunately, at 63, I'm slowing down and can't do what I used to, so I'll do what I can.
Yeah, I'm the Grandma that owns all the tools and does the construction!!!
Love the old homes - they've stood the test of time and have a lot of character.
Amazing job everyone. Thank you for bringing life back to a wonderful home. Wishing all of you many happy years in the old/new place!!!
As a teen I was to Portugal several times and saw the absolutely beautiful houses that had fallen into disrepair. I dreamt about doing exactly this. Nice to see you doing it.
I’m so happy that you didn’t demolish the house and kept some of its history, like the old blue doors. It looks beautiful 😊
From a Portuguese, thank you and well done 👍🏻
Thank you 😊
I need a timelapse of this timelapse
Great job, love the way you kept a little bit of tradition with the doors & the tiles. Hard work but worth every minute. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks so much!
The patience and hard work on this is just incredible and inspiring. You all really know your stuff; this was so impressive to watch. What a beautiful restoration!
Thank you
It started out with me thinking these guys are going to get hurt doing the demolition. Then as the rebuild progressed I realized that these guys are total professionals. Well worth a watch👏👏
Thank you ☺️
I was hoping to see a tour at the end of it all. Such a lovely house and marvelous transformation! ❤️
This is so incredible! I am blown away by how square and plumb everything is. Plus the amazing scribe pieces you did throughout, so great!!
Thank you 👍🏼
Seriously, I got tired from watching the 45 minutes long video itself. At the end I felt like I've accomplished something 😄
I can only imagine how emotional this would be for you guys to start from scratch and get your dream house.
Thank you for putting it up online, you guys deserve appreciation for what you did and how perfectly you achieved this. Cheers 🥂
Even I wept as they closed the door for the last time. 😂
it’s 2024. devoting 45 minutes of your attention to one thing is damn near superhuman.
don’t hold back, kudos to you! i’m 7 min in and have paused it three times, one of the times to comment on a vid i haven’t finished (this comment.)
@@pupawupagus A superhuman effort needs a superhuman support and appreciation as well mate
No one can say you guys didn't pour all your love and hearts and souls on your home. Congratulations! It looks phenomenal.
Magnificent job. I was enthralled all the way through the vid. Beautiful work. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you very much! 👍🏻
I didn't plan on watching anything like this today.. .. but I couldn't stop. They did a perfect mix of updated modern with local influences and updated old-fashioned details. I adored watching this and admired all the hard work, planning, and skill involved.
Thank very much! Very much appreciated!😊👍🏼
You guys have me in tears. That was kick-ass work and I’m so impressed. The fact that you can come home to your home knowing what it was and now what it is and know that YOU were the vision, labor, and love that created thus is heartfelt.
Peace and blessings to you and your family
Wow, thank you!
I didn't think I would last thru an entire 45 min video, but I couldn't tear myself away. omg, what an incredible transformation! Wish I could live there.
Wow! I thought it was going to be one of those DIY efforts but this is all professional quality work! The troweling skills alone are amazing 🙂
You guys are super heros that's amazing I never thought you would turn that pile of rubble into something so beautiful I blown away!
Thank you Brian 😊
I built my own house, from dirt to shingles, 19 foot cathedral ceilings and a 30 x 20 loft bedroom. With that said I couldn't even imagine myself tackling the project in the video. Amazing work, guys!
Oh wow!😎👍🏼
I did not expect to watch a 45 minute video on TH-cam this morning. Amazing effort requiring a ton of time, capital, bravery, etc. What a great way to be welcomed by your new neighbors (even with all the noise I'm sure you made 😀).
Haha literally me too, I was like I’ll just watch 10 minutes for now.. okay 15, okay no half the video. I ended up finishing it all at once 😂 loved every second!
Cannot imagine taking on this renovation. Just to have the vision to see what could be accomplished is astounding. Much respect!🇨🇦
Thank you so much 😊
this is so cool. Im so glad you were able to experience the satisfaction of a project turning out this good and for people around the world to enjoy it too!!
Thank you so much!😊
I am speechless. The skill, patience and perseverance of these brothers, and the help, it just beyond words. WELL DONE, BRAVO BROTHERS! I am truly impressed.
Thanks Jack. Very much appreciated 👍🏼
Wow! I am in awe. Your parents surely raised strong willed boys that have the patience, focus, perseverance and ability to work together. The mental and physical strength it took to complete this project is beyond anyone can imagine. I am glad you all captured the process. This was amazing to watch. Kudos! ❤
I helped my Uncle remodel a dairy barn in New England.. I so appreciate the work that goes into something like this.
Thank you ☺️
Wow thats really impressive and a beautiful endresult - still the same charme and beautiful with the accent colours and the white walls
I watch a lot of renovation shows and this one is hands-down my favorite. I haven't watched something this absorbing in years. I was absolutely gripped for 45 minutes straight, lol. You guys are amazing. Craftsmanship like this is going extinct. Where can I binge more stuff exactly like this???
Check out their other vlogs - lovely couple and so funny as well as talented
As a Portuguese woman who loves building and renovations, I take my hat off to you, Sirs, I wish I had you in my family. Much respect for you and your amazing project, I've enjoyed watching every single second of this video. ❤

The building skills..love the flavour of dutch engeneering in this project and not to forget the cool thing you guys did is to keep it still look portuguese 👌
I loved every second of watching. the joy in rebuilding is all over all your faces! and what a craftsmanship ❤ well done brothers, and miss!
That was honestly the most inspiring video I’ve watched in ages! I can’t imagine taking on such a project, but you guys turned a wreck into a beautiful home! Thanks for filming it along the way! 😊
June, that’s very kind of you. Thank you for watching and thank you for the lovely comment. 😎👍🏻
True! I was going to watch the beginning & shoot across to the end..But I got so engrossed in it watched it through..Great Job!
Your craftsmanship is inspiring, and the care you take in doing this job is admirable. Very satisfying to watch 😊
Thank you very much!
Portuguese here. Absolutely awesome job! Love the end result. I have a small farm with an old stone house that need similar treatment. Unfortunately me being on the opposite side of Europe do not help the quest. Love your work. Cheers.
Accidentally clicked on your video, but I watch for a few seconds and then ended up watching the entire thing totally fascinated, hard work but my God was worth it great job thanks for posting this video
Awesome! Thank you!
Been doing remodeling homes and businesses with my dad and brother for over 20 years here in California and the work, dedication and perseverance for this project is spectacular. I’m glad you kept certain aspects of the home original and stuck to the regulations and played by the rules across the world. Well done my friend, going to share this with my family 🤝🏾
Thank you so much 😀
The differences between bricks and mortar versus cardboard and sticks is enormous…
This is truly amazing, you're all so tallented. I really enjoyed watching this. Thanks for sharing. X
Thank you so much!😊
Well done, I am amazed how well it turned out. I'm a 75 year old widow, but I watched the entire video. You could start a trade school to pass on your many talents!
Wow...just wow!
I have always wished I knew how to be a craftsman like your brother and you clearly are. I can't twist two wires together... Absolutely wonderful work. I hope you and your family enjoy that place for generations. God bless.
twisting wires is easy. First you hold one wire while you eat your sandwich then when your done with the sandwich you clean up the area of crumbs and go get yourself a drink. Oh. go get the other wire and watch tv for an hour. No need to hurry. Where was I? Go to the pub and tell your friends how hard you been working . Done! Wasn't that easy my dear friend?
No tour of finished home?
Stunning transformation. I admire anyone that takes it on and makes something old new again. I get tired of the continual tearing down the old and building new with less quality or character. I think you did an amazing job and I love that you kept a few of the original touches and reused them. I think you're all amazing and did a great job. Bravo!!
I love Portugal and wish I could do the same to live there forever. You deserve the Nobel Price for "house restoration" it came out soooo beautiful.
Thank you Ana Maria 😊
What a wonderful video! Thank you TH-cam for recommending this! Portugal is where my father is from. So nice to see this! Cheers from Massachusetts USA! ❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
It’s amazing what humans can accomplish! So glad you came along to save this beautiful place!
Thanks so much for showing this to the world what an honour it was to watch your hard work and craftsmanship. There is not much more satisfying a thing then to watch a family work hard together.
Thank you Daniel 😊
Stunning!
Amazing job and the house turned really beautiful. Well done, guys.
Thank you so much! 😊
There's a lot of work and love that went into doing all this. You can tell, it's well thought out. These folks are tight and care about each other. You can tell that they all know what they're doing. They're some of the best folks that construction has to offer nowadays! Good job!
Sorrowfully with the younger generation all knowledge gets lost, they aren't interested in learning. We are so happy our son wanted to stay in his dad's footsteps in the motor trade and is now a Company Director within an established business. with 5 members on board. His future is sound, doing very well, so proud x
I am genuinely impressed by the diversity of your skills and the commitment to see such a renovation through - not to mention the creativity underlying the design of the end product. Well done. Really, well done.
O melhor vídeo que já vi no TH-cam, e acreditem que já vi milhares.
Parabéns pelo vosso trabalho, a Quinta ficou simplesmente incrível.
Wow! That’s a compliment. Thank you Bruno 😎👍🏼
Beyond amazing what you did. Bringing new life to a place seemingly lost is pure talent. Bravo from across the pond.
Thank you ☺️
Thanks for restoring our landscape. The final result looks amazing and really captures Portuguese tradition. With these ridiculous salaries and taxes, regular Portuguese folks don't (and never will) have the capability to do something like this. Hope you enjoy your time here.
Many thanks! 😊
It’s sad that the people of Portugal wouldn’t be able to rebuild and own homes like this in their own land. They did a beautiful job but I wonder who can afford the home now?
You guys did an amazing job. I couldn’t even imagine where to start with something like this. Gorgeous.
What a beautiful save! You're both so talented and skilled. It really, really turned out wonderful (my heart broke a little over the loss of the original tile floors, tho). Congratulations on the results of your hard work and vision!
I love the front door knob being in the middle of the door it was just one of those little touches of detail that really caught my eye, you all did an excellent job on this place incredible.❤
I can’t tell you how much problems that door knob gave us 😂
It turned out good in the end. 😎
Congratulations! What a joy to watch - brothers working successfully together and achieving an incredible outcome. Enjoy the fruits of your labour! ❤️
Taking something that was basically falling down to something liveable again warms the heart. Buildings with character are so hard to come by these days. To bring back this building to life really was a joy to see. Thank you for saving this home it was well worth the effort and enjoyable to watch
Thanks for sharing your video with us you have really made us feel better about restoring old houses Alabama USA 🇺🇸

Wow! What a fantastic job you all did. If I was ever to be able to have another house, I'd hire you to rehab it for sure. Such great craftsmanship. You just don't see that anymore. I am glad I am one of those who watched this house renovations from start to finish in both your brother and your channel.
I myself got 3 left hands and really can't do anything right when it comes to construction and fixing things around the house. I so much enjoyed this video of these capable men (and woman) building a house from almost scratch. It must be so rewarding to be able to create things with your hands. Great respect and I enjoyed the video a lot! Besides the handsmancraft, there is so much knowledge shown in this video to known exactly how to do certain things. Amazing stuff!
I just watched this 45 min video in one go. Your hard work and dedication definitely payed off big time. The final result is perfect☺️
Awesome! Thank you!
This is so inspiring and beautiful and the fact you were part of all most all things that has been done in the house. I would love to see more of these kind of videos and honestly I would love to work with you in these kind of projects, I would learn this. Your craftmanship is on another level.
Thank you so much!😊
I just gotta say what a beautiful country Portugal 🇵🇹 is. I visited for a concert and ended up extending my stay for 2 months. Lisboa, Portimao, Algarves, Porto, Albufeira will always have a special place in my heart.
It’s amazing
That property has a large footprint. I am wondering 1.Are you citizens of Portugal.?2.Can foreigners buy property there.?3.Were there inspector,s you had to payoff in order get your home approved for habitation.?...How much did it cost.?

Wow just incredible, the vision you had ànd the skills in just incredible. Bravo, bravo and BRAVO!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much 😀
I am so envious of your skills and knowledge. Having the ability to bring something so beautifully back to life is priceless. Absolutely love the transformation. I hear there are many extremely cheap properties in parts of Europe, that cannot be demolished and must be restored within a certain timeframe, as part of the deal of getting the place for next to nothing. Those who can do most of the work themselves are certainly winners. It just astounds me that your every single trade…plumber, electrician, painter, tiler, carpenter, roofer, builder, decorator, cabinet maker, the list is endless!
