    I immediately detected a factor of distorsion in B that I didn't quite like. I wasn't sure and thought I was maybe confusing some of the guitar frequencies with the voice, but every time you switched, I could hear it. Not super obvious, but I could hear it. EQ wise, I didn't notice any clear differences. I guess something in the whole tube section of the Neumann is working just better. In the other one, that factor of distorsion I'm talking about, kind of takes away the silkiness the Neumann has. I would definitely try swapping tubes between them, just to see how much of that is making a difference.

  • @antiHUMANDesigns
    @antiHUMANDesigns 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I figured I'd just pick whichever sounded the best, and that was "A". Not surprised it turned out to be the Neumann.

  • @JJBlairrecording
    @JJBlairrecording 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    OK, I listened to the raw files: The GA has more top end, which can vary from capsule to capsule on a 47. However, the GA is absolutely missing the lower midrange bloom, which is the hallmark of a 47. Klaus calls it "midrange authority." Now, I'm sure you can make great recordings with the GA, but it doesn't do that thing the 47 is uniquely capable of doing. I made my favorite recording ever on a BLUE47! But, after a couple decades of listening to dozens of possible circuits, it that characteristic appears to be something that is reliant on the combination of the VF14 tube and BV8 transformer. Everything else is close, but no cigar.

    • @Christian_svedin
      @Christian_svedin  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool! I know you're a great engineer so thanks for listening! Sure there are differences. The presence of the vintage Neumanns is what I like the most. How it make things so upfront without taking over. I really like the outcome of my Landslide cover made with the GA. It's definitely a great mic. Vintage always seem to have some magic to it though. Maybe it's the aging components more then anything. Cheers!

    • @JJBlairrecording
      @JJBlairrecording 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Christian_svedin The aging components will only increase noise floor, generally, and most of the best sounding 47s have their passive components replaced. I have three 47s, which I maintain myself, and I've worked on and rebuilt a bunch more. The biggest difference from mic to mic is always the capsule. The tubes are very consistent in frequency response. Transformers don't change sound with age. You can extend the frequency range up and down by changing some values of either the grid resistor or transformer coupling capacitor, which moves the bass frequency resonance value. But those paper and tar Bosch output caps were used in V2 rockets, and are not changing sound with age. People mistakingly think they are electrolytic, which actually would dry up and change the sound. The ceramic capsule bias capacitor might get noisy or leaky, but it's just a shunt and no audio passes through it, so it's not going to change frequency response, but changing the older ones out to polystyrene actually make the sound even better, so aging is really not a factor. The only time aging is a factor is when you have an original M7, which will dry out, lose bass response, and have exaggerated high end as it stiffens.

    It's really hard to even compare two vintage mics against each other, even the vintage nice will sound different. That being said, These two mics are close, GA has definitely captured the spirit of the U47. It's definitely on my short list for next mic purchase, very nice sounding mic.

    I heard a difference on an iPhone! BUT! I haven’t seen the results yet, so I don’t know which is which. So, my unbiased opinion (listening on iPhone) is that Mic B is clearer or more present (meaning I’m hearing more high frequencies). Mic A is more syrupy (maybe meaning that all the transients are not getting through) and has more break up. Now, my next move is to download the raw files and listen to them on my KH310s. After that then I’ll watch the rest of the video to see which mic is which.

    thank you for this video which I was looking forward to. I downloaded the Raw files to accurately see the raw takes. can you tell me which capsule you used on the GAP?
    I can say that to my ears, the U47 Neumann has something magical about the sound that I cannot find in the GAP;
    I also notice that the GAP is a bit brighter than the U47. They sound alike, it's true, but I wish I could say that the magic I felt when I heard you sing in the U47 came from the GAP, but it isn't.
    It's a nice service that you did there for us and I thank you for that ....

Don’t worry about the lyrics, just create the vocal melody, sing whatever stupid words come to mind whose syllables match the rhythmic cadence of the vocal melody. Concentrate on the structure of the verse, pre chorus, chorus and an instrumental B section, an intro and a outro. Record it, file it. Complete the song minus the lyrics. Even if it sucks. That's the usual difference in these tests and the Neumanns tend to have more bass and compression. Overall, the Neumann's tend to sound more alive, complex, 3 dimensional. The GA47 sounded kind of dull and simple by comparison (and that is the case with every clone I've heard including the FLEA 47) but its still very, very nice in general. "A" seems a bit louder, than "B". So better test by yourself with the same LUFS оn both tracks.

    You speak for something like 3 minutes before you start the "shootout." So WHY don't you use one or both of the mics for your VO? It is difficult to get a true read with a mixed track. Let us hear the CLEAN vocal tracks, and a CLEAN narration read or something.
