The U47 has like a natural Multiband compression to it. Just sounds like a record so sweet. Stam sounds great though, Im not spending 36k on a mic thats for sure haha. Thanks so much for renting this and putting it up for the public!

The u47 has more butter on the top with a bigger weight on the low mids and bottom. The Stam still sounds fantastic though.
The U47 has far more weight and "3D"-ness to my ears.
David-Thanks for doing this! This is the best mic shootout I’ve heard. Great piece of songwriting, man. Awesome performance of it. I got the STAM sa-47, & just cut female lead vocals w it for 2 days as my first sessions w it. Imagine how thrilling for me that your 2 mics would be indistinguishable in a rock band mix.

They're close. I checked with my eyes closed and I could still mostly tell them apart, but not always. Often if the phrasing had a certain breathiness or sibilance it would reveal some unevenness/resonances in the upper mids on the Stam. Also sometimes the fullness in the bottom drops by a tad or its covered by a more scratchy timbre. The Neumann sounds very full and even, good intelligibility without sounding sibilant, but it might also have been a tad louder, which of course misleads.
U47 has slight more presence in the upper mids but less in the lows. I prefered the Neumann but there is no argument to spend more than 35k because of that little difference. Same style and vibe. I would even bet that a different U47 next to the one u tested would sound like the other. Definitely a best buy.
I find the biggest difference lies in the "s" and "t" sounds. On the U47 I didn't feel that the vocal would need an de-esser whereas with the Stam a little bit of de-essing would be necessary.
That is probably also due to decades of dust, smoke and dirt that the membrane of the vintage mic has collected, and therefore making it more heavy and slowing down the transient response.
I bet if you leave the Stam for some some years in a smokers room it will sound more closely to the original.
That could definitely be an interesting positive side effect of decades of dust 😆

You can hear the full range from that mic, highs and lows and mids in your vocal tones. A sound you would get from an old tube amplifier which are also worth thousands

I have six pieces of Stam Audio gear, including a SA-47 MK3 and I will continue to look to Stam as my first option.
They make really great gear. I have most of their pre-amps and I can’t imagine selling any of them. They kill in every shootout I do against other huge brands.
The highs were slightly nicer on the u47 when really listening. But they are virtually the same. Could might as well be the positioning of the mics. Amazing!!

Sounds good but one of those mid frequencies is sticking out on the STAM in an annoying way, although it does better on the high end than the WA 47 does.
I did a similar video about ten years ago (channel doesn't exist anymore, unfortunately, but I'd still do it again) in which I compared a "crappy" Focusrite TwinTrak Pro against their ISA series preamp. I split my acoustic guitar mic + vocal mic signals and sent them to both preamps and back to my DAW, with and without processing. Everyone (as usual) hated the sound of the Twintrak and LOVED the ISA. "ISA sounds so much fuller, warmer, has more body; etc..." the usual suspects. Only ONE person out of 150+ commenters said something like: "wow, the Twintrak sounds better than I thought!"
And I was the only one who knew which preamps they're actually listening to. They wére listening to the Twintrak and the ISA though... esrever ni tub, LOL!! stoidI! Most people's brains work in mysterious ways when they THINK the Neumann MUST/SHOULD sound better!! xD
For sure it’s not a real test unless it’s a blind test. People hear with their eyes 😉
@@DavidDiMuzio Indeed and then there's people who also actually believe the U-47 cost 30.000+ when it was first released! Just joking, but it wouldn't surprise me. Back then, it probably cost the same as the Stam SA-47 or maybe even the Warm Audio WA-47. :P The Warm is amazing though! I don't own one, but I've heard recordings made with it. The studio owner (who owns an actual U-47) told me that, if his U-47 breaks down or gets nicked, he'd see no problem with solely using the WA-47 in the future. The very reason he recorded with the Warm, was because he wanted to hear how well it sounded vs the U-47. ;) So, I might get one too in the future it it's thát good
Original U47 has more bite and air (Sounds a but more Open/defined). Listening on Adam S2V studio monitors.

I can’t tell any difference. The microphones sound identical to me.
They're so close IMO. The original is a bit rounder on top and a tad fuller on the bottom, but, it's such a small difference.
Neumann is a bit warmer, darker; stam has more clarity in upper midrange or highs. But not significant….u can choose a darker micpre for the stam or eq it some.

The Neumann is dynamically smoother. It's handling the peaks better. That must mean the circuitry is to thank.

I deliberately didn't watch the video once you started singing and just listened, to see if my ears noticed any changes in the mic. I couldn't hear any differences. I don't believe anyone who commented below about the differences between the mics would be capable of accurately pinpointing when the mics were changed without the visual subtitles.

Both mics have a very similar sonic signature - I could hear a touch more fullness in the bass on the U47, but it was marginal. Great demo, great singing - thanks for this

I prefer the 87 personally. I also really love the 67. My friend owns the 87-T and is crazy about it. If I buy another Stam mic it would probably be that or one of Josh’s upcoming original creations.
@@DavidDiMuzio yes I think the shoot video you did with the Sly Stone U87 and the SA87 was great. Its like the SA 87 is tailored to your voice. I like your mic comparisons because if a mic changes your sound, it is very fast to identify and hear. Great Job!!!
Wow the Stam sounds incredible. They both have that 3D quality to them, but I actually preferred the SA-47 over the U47 in this demo. There was a noticeable difference in my opinion.. mainly that the Stam had a fuller tone. I'm curious to know if that might have something to do with the capsule. Did the vintage U47 you used have an M7 or a K47?
I'm not sure which capsule the real U47 had in it. Were they made with two different capsules?
@@DavidDiMuzio Original U47s were manufactured with the M7 capsule. In the 60s they switch to the K47 capsule which was much more durable with a longer life span.

Thank you for the precise comparison. The differences are marginal, but quite perceptible. Both sound similarly full-bodied in the frequency range of the soulfully sung vocals - the U47 a very little bit warmer in the presence range and also offers a top-end sheen that the SA-47 MK2, in contrast to the SA-47 MK1, no longer delivers. It's a pity that a comparison with the wonderfully warm sounding SA-47 MK1 was not possible at the same time. Listened to with Neumann KH 310 and with headphones.
The MK1 was/is darker than the Neumann U47 and the SA-47 MK2. The upper sheen it’s just a value on the circuit that I can remove to make it appear. The MK2 is closer to a U47 than the MK1 but the MK1 sounds great too.

that's good news! A small value change in the circuitry of the MK 2 is not a big deal. Since you own several original U47s, I'm sure you're in a good position to judge. When you say "darker", I hear the high-mid range minimally different. But we all know that after almost 70 years it is hardly possible to find even two identical sounding originals. When you have the choice to compare, you follow your taste.
The SA-47 MK 1 is very tasteful :) - it is often used here. In any case: hats off to your great work.
@@kurtpeter6047 Hey Kurt, you are absolutely correct! I love the MK1 SA-47, it's like a 47 on steroids. Huge lows !!, maybe I'll make an MK3 which has both the lows of the 1st one and presence of the second, the MK1 was darker.
@@joshuastam7704 Stereoids? Hehe, funny comparison, to me it sounds more like the difference between an M-7 and a K-47 capsule. Just like the originals: both in the same ballpark, the K-47 capsule a bit younger, but more attentive. My MK 1 still has the K-47 capsule.
I guess the capsule used in the MK 2 sounds almost the same - but not completely identical. Anyway: when you use an SA-47, you really get a big smile on your face.

I’m shocked anyone would pay that much. $10K would be the top of what I would pay for one (and not for the sound, but the historical relevance only). Plus, it’s around a couple grand to find an accurate replacement tube if one goes bad for it, because they aren’t made anymore 🙄
You CAN hear the difference. I would say roughly a 5 to 7% difference in the vintage U47's favor. Yet im 100% sure the difference is NOT worth 36k. To me.

Personally your voice is better on the Stam. The u47 has a slight dip in the 6k area with your vocal. The stam holds your voice well. The low and low mids are better with the u47

what preamps and interface did you use?
For both mics I used the UTA MPDI-4 into my Cranborne Audio 500R8
Stam has to be the closest of any replicas the low mids sells it for me

The U-47 sounds a lot more open and has better high end. No doubt it sounds better, but like you said, does it sound 35 thousand dollars better. NO! But if I could keep one and they were the same price . I'm taking the Neumann all day long.

For your voice and 99% of male vocals I'd skip both and get a vintage u87 but that's just me.
Fair enough. They have a totally different sound. A lot of people love the U47. All personal taste really once you get to a certain level of mic :)

Could you be transparant and mention if you are paid for this review - or not? Neumann has slightly lower level so that makes STAM look good. Nothing against STAM, I own some of their compressors and I like them. Nothing against you either, just this trend of "reviews" on TH-cam that manufacturers pay for, bugs me. Gullible people eat them for candy and don't realise that they are ads, not reviews. Sometimes these tests even are tampered with to make the advertised product sound wonderful for the consumer.
Sure, I was not paid for doing this shootout, and the sound was not "tampered with" ...Whenever I do a microphone shootout I just record whatever the microphone captures and post it. I tried to level match the microphones, but different tube microphones have slightly different levels of compression and ways they compress the vocal. So it's sometimes quite difficult to perfectly level match. I did my best to though :)

As singer that U47 is just ridiculous, it has that star quality, not impressed with Stam, sounds one-dimensional and not-sparkly (dull) and ”demoish”.
