I've bought the Retro Tube II, and I've replaced the original valve for the Tung-Sol 12AX7/ECC83. The sound just blew my mind. I've been working with Neumann, Lewitt, Rode, and Austrian Audio microphones and this one is my favorite. The sound is full, warm and the high frequencies are just soft and bright at the same time. My acoustic guitar sound came out absolutely beautiful and for voice is just amazing.

I could hear difference in mix; but not one on one. V76 had a fuller sound…say 3D fullness. Particularly on the vocal. I’m just listening on an iPad Pro.

what settings did you use for this take , where did you set the mic preamp and the contour out switch? sounds great

The name "The poor man's U47" came from the time after the fall of the wall in Germany. In the 90s it was possible to buy these super cheap in former East Germany or from East Europe. I bought my 563 at a flea market in former East Berlin for 15€. I later added a M7s for 450€. These days are over. Today it should be >3K€ for a set. Really cool btw. is the MK55K Omni-Capsule. Try it on acoustic guitar or drum OH! As the name indicates: the CMV563 is closer related to the CMV3 than to the U47 which sounds different due to the different headbasket, transformer and tube.

Yeah my 67 had a really juicy upgrade with a great Philips NOS tube and it gave the signal a sheen and low-mid robustness that I'm in love with. I'd say it's quite impactful!

Nice demo. Motown began using the KM86 as standard on everything in 1968. prior to this, the primary microphone was the U67 supplemented by the RCA BX44, and the the EV 666.

Sounds absolutely beautiful....Love the M49 on the Vocals through the AT-3 and your Guitar sounds phenomenal through the 1272. The M49 really does sound more natural than any Vintage U47 I have heard....I am a huge Ribbon buff and the M49 has that special je ne sais quoi....Thanks for the gorgeous videos.....best wishes!

I don’t feel the need for the U67 reissue for over double the price as a U87ai. Especially when you can EQ to get that warmer sound no problem if that’s what you’re looking for. I personally prefer the U87ai but would also like to record a whole album on the U67 reissue because it’s something I haven’t don’t and would like to compare the two after mixing and mastering.

Does anyone else not hear that tingly top-end? Like it’s extremely brittle sounding. Not smooth at all. Was there extra processing done to this?

You can definately hear that neumann lush sweetness on the top end softening any sibilence, unlike the Ai version. You spoke briefly about trying some tube pre's. I don't own a neumann unfortunately, but i use a mojave 201 fet mic that I find a little harsh sometimes like a lot of fet mics. I was wondering if a tube pre can smooth a fet mic a little. Opinion?

Few days ago I got this piece of gear as I could find it with a more affordable price in a store. So far from the quick tests I 've done it shifts the energy of the mix and creates wider stereo field. All in a good way. This is what I feel. I think is a good value considering the price.

After using this preamp for a year it’s been nothing but amazing. Super clean sounds that allows you to add controlled distortion fx. Some preamps do sound better for hip hop though. I’ve been running a C414 through it and it is insane how crystal clear it is. 10/10

U47 still has that warm magic on the lows and silky rounded off highs. The fet less warm without that kind of warm surround feeling of the tube 47 and a bit sharper like a faint buzziness to the highs.

The SM7B sounds very crude compared to either Earthworks, but the Earthworks mics have the kind of freakish top end detail that IMO doesn't flatter anyone except the most skilled speakers with trained, deep voices and fluent articulation.

Does the standard Ga47 with the m7 sound as good as the XT version using the m7 head?

I have started watching your videos and cannot tell you how much I appreciate them. I hope that you will continue on as I am starting to share the videos. I do own the dlx and it’s amazing!!!! Especially when paired with my Neumann mics! I use it more than my manly force. I have opened and saw the Carhill Transformers and the high end capacitors, it really is a beautiful unit. Stay up my friend.
