  • Exploring Shanghai China.
Watch as Jack and Paige take on China's Megacity of Shanghai, accompanied by our good friend Maxwell Carver! We start the morning in Fuxing Park, getting to know a couple Uncles before being taught to dance the Guang Chang Wu. After dancing in the park, we walk through the streets of Shanghai, the French Concession area before heading to Xintiandi where the first meeting of the CCP was held. After this, we head to Huaihai Bird Park where we get to know more about the bird scene and meet some craftsman and bird owners. After this, we are straight to the People's Park for the infamous Shanghai marriage market. We meet a man trying to learn Portuguese before trying to find Paige a new husband. We bargain with a marriage agent but inevitably Paige's demands are too high. We find some other buyers who want to offer Paige a new life in China, but we are swept away by our Portuguese learning man to sing Italian songs with him in the park. Not for long though before he wants to draw us a lovely portrait. After a busy day in Shanghai, we head over for lunch at a local spot and try Shanghai's most famous food, the soup dumpling or Xiaolongbao! We have a lovely lunch full of many Shanghai delicacies before we explore more of Shanghai.

When I first visited China, I was absolutely pleasantly surprised as well. It was NOTHING like USA and the West told us back home. Alternatively, when I first visited USA I was also shockingly surprised as well. Again it was NOTHING like USA and the West told us back home.
China was modern, futuristic, generally people were fit, they had the most AMAZING Civic Infrastructures and most affordable Civic Services throughout the Country,
USA was modern, but only in places where Billionaires lived (LA, NYC, LV) ... and only within the suburbs of the places where Billionaires lived. But for most of the country the Civic Infrastructures needed serious maintenance or replacements/constructions, and the Civic Services were NOT affordable to millions of USA Citizens. I could not believe that the richest Country in the world have 70 Million (out of 340 Million) living in poverty. And the stupid Gun Laws in USA where they allow 40,000 Gun related deaths every year, mainly amongst the poor, so that the Corporates can make billions in profit every years, and it is also a means of culling their poor population, saving paying out government social security financial support.
China had a Government that totally focused on the needs of EVERY ONE of their citizens (1.5 Billion people).
USA had a Government that heavily focused on the interests of CORPORATIONS regardless they have 70 Million, out of 340 Million, living poverty (and the numbers are growing daily).

“High risk,” as in risked of an American wanting to stay in China forever if he/she visited China instead of going back to the dull, boring life in the US!😂😝 This actually happened to an American kid just graduated from high school about 10 years ago! He traveled with his Christian rock band to do a concert tour in China for about a month in several Chinese cities and ended up staying in China for over a year despite pleas from his parents telling him to come back home to the US! He stayed home for about 3 months and went back to China to study Chinese and attend college and ended up staying in China for good after he met a Chinese girl in college! The last time I spoke with his parents was about 8 years ago when they told me he was engaged to a Chinese girl and that they were ecstatic that their son was going to marry that Chinese girl! His father was especially proud of his son’s choice despite only having spoken with her a few times on the phone! They planned to visit their son and daughter-in-law-to-be in China and attend the wedding in China, that was what they told me. Now you know why the US politicians do not want the American people to visit China! Because once you’ve visited China you might love China a lot more than the US and you might pledge your allegiance to China instead of you know what!

Your way of traveling means you get to meet a lot of actual locals. Most local people in Shanghai speak foreign languages to some extend (mostly English) due to the city's history, but in most popular tourist spots, the workers are from other provinces and are not as well versed in foreign languages.
It is said that in certain parts of Shanghai, especially the downtown areas where foreign embassies are situated, one can live a normal life while only knowing English. Now this is hearsay that my family told me (I was born and raised in Shanghai), but I didn't find a chance to go verify that myself yet (and I would like to someday, just going around pretending I don't speak Mandarin), but for now take this info with a pinch of salt
Edit: skimming through the video and saw the food at the end there. Strictly speaking, Shanghai really don't have a "local cuisine" to speak of, it is more of a conglomeration of the cuisine of the surrounding area plus a lot of European influences. You can find the likes of Schnitzels and Borscht and many more European classics to be considered staples in Shanghai cuisine, although heavily modified from their original to fit the Chinese taste. But it also goes the other way as well, the Shanghainese version of the cuisines from surrounding areas have been modified to better suit the taste of Europeans who lived in the area in the past, which is why the ribs you tried tasted so much like the ones you get in England.

46:00 The things about Shanghai cuisine is that you must review Shanghai's history first. Shanghai was a county seat with around 200,000 population before 1840. After First Opium War Shanghai was opened as a trade port and ceded a concession to Britain for British merchants. You can still found some British style old build in The Bund. (For example, the Custom House was build by Britain and it used to play Westminster Quarters on every quarter). Since then it grew rapidly and became a primary commercial and financial hub of Far East in the 1930s. When the PRC was establish in 1949, the population of Shanghai is around 5 million. So the majority of Shanghainese are immigrants from neighbouring provinces Jiangsu and Zhejiang, and the so called Shanghai cuisine, in a narrow sense, it is local cuisine which originated in Shanghai for those local inhabitant who lived in Shanghai before 1840. In a broader sense, it's a mixture of Jiangsu cuisine and Zhejiang cuisine.

I went to China in 2007 to work for an a joint venture between an American theatrical company and a Chinese one. It was an American broadway musical and it was one of the first to tour China. The first city was Shanghai, and I went exploring by myself that first night. Didn't know the language or anything. The people were very nice, but back then China didn't see many people from the west walking their streets, so I stood out and was a bit of a novelty. Not many people spoke English at the time, except for young college age people. I visited 7 cities and it was the most exciting, because it was nothing like the U.S. Although when I was in Shanghai it was so hot that I would have to change my shirt several times a day. I will say Shanghai now seems a bit more touristy than I remember it being back then. I never saw a Chinese man wearing a New York Yankees cap when I was there, believe me, I would have been very excited being from New York.
