      Some hotels (usually the cheaper ones) in China are not allowed to take foreigners because they don't have the licence to do so. I'm not sure which app you use to book the hotel, in TRIP will normally show you directly those hotels that can take foreigners, of course the price may be higher.

      Sorry about the inconvenience, hotels in bigger cities need to have permit to accommodate foreign guests, normally at least 3 stars+ hotels (it would be safe to book one of the chain hotels). The budget hotels don't have this permit unfortunately.

    • @soundinmyheart

    According to the latest notice from the Chinese government, starting from May 2024, all hotels are not allowed to refuse foreign passengers on the grounds of not having foreign-related qualifications. The Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Commerce, and the National Immigration Administration have made it clear that the hotel industry must accommodate foreign personnel and cannot refuse them on any pretext.

    The hotel problem is actually an old policy that recently the government changed it, so technically any hotel can acommodate foreigners now, not like in the past when the hotel had to meet some level of quality inspections and so on for being able to host foreigners.
    But now they don't have excuses, they're just lazy to make the change, so If you find a problem like that nowadays, you can report it to the authorities.

      It has nothing to do with the level of hotel facilities, it has something to do with whether the hotel has installed a passport scanning system, the passport scanner is networked with the entry-exit administration. Many hotels can't accommodate a few foreigners a year, so there is no passport scanner installed. Passport scanners are basically installed in hotels near general tourist attractions, even many cheap hotels have installed it, however, many hotels that are not tourist attractions are rarely installed, even some luxury hotels don't accept foreigners.

      It is not laziness of the hotels. The registering process is quite complicated and hotels get fined and announced once mistakes are made and found. There is really no reason for the hotels to tens of thousands over a few hundred. It is actually the government being the lazy one, shifting administration pressures to common small business.

    • @pearlrivers207

      @@AngelaBBB ID Scanners are for domestic guests. There is no scanners for foreigners coz there is no such database. You may see passport scanner at couple of airports, but it is voluntarily base and only open to less than twenty countries. Hotel staff needs to manually check and register all the info, which becomes the bottleneck and source of mistakes, which could lead to fine and punishments to the hotels.

A netizen holding a foreign passport stated in June2023 that he had been denied hotel stays in Shenzhen, Taiyuan, and Beijing, and was also required by the hotel to go to the local immigration bureau to apply for qualifications. Finally, he was able to check in after communication with the police station ( 110 Police phone number). The netizen stated that hotels do not actually require qualifications to receive foreign guests, and generally only need to manually enter the information of foreign guests, pointing out that the shop owner finds it troublesome to receive foreign guests and transfers the cost to tourists. Some hotels do not accept foreign guests because the location or qualifications of the hotel are not suitable for receiving foreign guests. Hotels that receive foreign guests need certain hardware requirements (such as opening international long-distance calls, international TV channels, Chinese and English menus, Chinese and English signboards, etc.) and software facilities. (Personnel must understand English, have relevant academic diplomas, and have the ability to receive foreigners), and must be registered and approved by relevant departments. There is another most important reason, that is, some hotels have not installed a public security registration system, and the guest information cannot be transmitted to the police. Then it is very likely that foreign criminals will stay overnight, which is quite dangerous. Therefore, some hotels do not accept foreign guests. The most important thing is for safety reasons!

      hotels that do not accept foreigners not because that are not allowed/qualified, it is because they do not want to. Because it is more complicated to register foreign visitors (as opposed to local Chinese) to the authority, and there is the need of staff's ability to speak English. So they DO NOT WANT to accept foreigners.

    The Chinese government issued a notice last month requesting that all hotels and B&Bs should not refuse bookings for foreign tourists to stay, but obviously your travel dates are before the notice was issued.
    China categorized its hotels into several classes before it opened up to tourism at the end of the last century, and classified the three-star hotels and above can be used for foreign guests, in order to make a good impression on western tourists. Hotels such as Marriott and Hilton are included in this category. This old policy was completely abolished in 2017, but some hotels have not been able to update their equipment to recognize foreign passports and register your information in the system linked to the authorities, so according to some security regulations they can't let you check in.
    In fact, Beijing abolished this policy back in 2003, so I highly doubt that your encounter was a result of the hotel's front desk didn't even knowing how to operate the check-in process for foreign tourists, which shouldn't have happened in the first place.

    Tip of the day:) When checking the departure board (the biggest and the highest one), look for a color name associated with your train(unfortunately written in Chinese), usually displayed in the rightmost column.Once you reach the platform, you'll notice many colored emblem plates on the ground along the track, each with a number (like the green one on 10:26 and 10:39). Match your car number and color from the departure board with those on the ground. This indicates exactly where your car will stop, saving you a lot of time, especially if you're boarding the train from an intermediate station. This way, you can use the few minutes before the train arrives efficiently.

    In fact, it is rare to see police officers in China. The uniformed personnel you generally see on the streets are usually security guards, traffic coordinators, and auxiliary police. They are not police officers. Most of the surveillance cameras on the streets are for monitoring traffic violations. These cameras are used to capture instances of speeding, illegal lane changes, honking, etc. Security checks in subways and high-speed trains are implemented to prevent bad actors from carrying knives, flammable, or explosive materials onto trains, ensuring the safety of passengers. In the end, I can only say that we are all ordinary people; no one is really paying attention to what we are doing. All these measures are in place to prevent bad things from happening, and I think that's a good thing.

    In the past, Chinese hotels had to apply and go through the relevant procedures to be allowed to receive foreign tourists, and many small hotels did not go through these procedures in order to avoid trouble. So...

Regarding the issue you faced with a hotel refusing your booking due to an outdated policy: Previously, local governments considered both safety and service standards, so not all hotels accepted foreigners. However, things have changed this year. Hotels are no longer allowed to refuse service to foreigners. If you encounter this issue again, you can report it to the relevant authorities. Despite the frustration you faced when settling down, I appreciate that you kept smiling through it all.

    Yesterday, I read a feature article in The Economist titled "China has become a scientific superpower."In 2019 The Economist surveyed the research landscape in the country and asked whether China could one day become a scientific superpower. Today, that question has been unequivocally answered: “yes”. Chinese scientists recently gained the edge in two closely watched measures of high-quality science, and the country’s growth in top-notch research shows no sign of slowing. The old science world order, dominated by America, Europe and Japan, is coming to an end.

    For foreigners, if they can book a hotel on the English version of Ctrip, it indicates that this hotel is available for foreigners to stay. When staying in a hotel in China, the registered guest information is synchronously transmitted to the local public security bureau. If it is a foreigner, more registration information is required. If the registration information is incomplete, the hotel will be fined. Small hotels are reluctant to receive foreigners because none of their staff understand English and they are afraid of being fined for incomplete registration information of foreigners.

When we take our public transportation--the rail that runs through the city (like the A-Line), there is a chance you will see fights, or get stabbed, or see some gangster eyeing another potential gangster. The Metrolink is a bit safer and "nicer" (not remotely like what one sees in the video) but it is no high-speed rail and it serves a miniscule amount of people that make up the entirety of the greater Los Angeles area. Hats off to China doing this--our media loves to BS and badmouth your country, so it's great that citizens or travelers like you show the reality of things.

The Chinese public security authorities have been aware of the problem for a few months ago and have issued instructions to hotels, but I think it will take a while for all hotels to make the change. For now, the best thing to do is to add a filter when choosing a hotel and select "for foreign guests" in the Policy Services tab. I would be happy to recommend some of the larger chain hotels if you need them. Their services are usually more standardized.

    There are hotels which can't accommodate foreigners, because hotels which can accommodate foreigners need to connect to registration system of local police. Once foreigners check in, the staff need to register the info into the system. For budget hotels, they might not be connected yet, since they probably never had foreigners in their hotels. But early last month, local government already issued a supervisory announcement to urge those hotels and venders to upgrade their system, so that they can accommodate foreigners and also accept foreign debit and credit cards.

    SH hongqiao train station. I used to travel between SH and BJ a lot. The train was always the best option, unlike the flight, there is no delay, the security check is way faster. The only downside for me is I always get to the train station at the last minute, so when I see people running in rush in behind you it reminds me of all the crazy running I did in this train station, out of breathe,.

    What I love about Chinese trains is their punctuality. From those green skin soviet trains i took in China more than 2 decades to today's HSR, every single time the train departed on the second like this guy says. Second hand hits 12 and you feel it begin to glide.

      We definitely booked way in advance which is why we were so confused, we did not know that not all hotels accept foreigners, i guess this was a bit of a shock to us. in all fairness, the staff used a translation app and were very kind and helpful. they even called a hotel nearby and confirmed that they do accept foreigners and told us where we might find another hotel. as travellers we are always learning 😍

With the Ferris Wheel and the Sam’s Club at the Global Harbor Mall…that is CHANGZHOU which is about 40 minutes via high speed train, but a 4 hour car drive! So your train took you through Changzhou North Railway Station which is directly across the street to where I live. So cool!❤
