Some hotels (usually the cheaper ones) in China are not allowed to take foreigners because they don't have the licence to do so. I'm not sure which app you use to book the hotel, in TRIP will normally show you directly those hotels that can take foreigners, of course the price may be higher.
Sorry about the inconvenience, hotels in bigger cities need to have permit to accommodate foreign guests, normally at least 3 stars+ hotels (it would be safe to book one of the chain hotels). The budget hotels don't have this permit unfortunately.
Because in china, the hotel accepted foreigners must have special licenses (at least three stars hotel ).I was a tour guide for foreign tourists before,I know about it.
According to the latest notice from the Chinese government, starting from May 2024, all hotels are not allowed to refuse foreign passengers on the grounds of not having foreign-related qualifications. The Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Commerce, and the National Immigration Administration have made it clear that the hotel industry must accommodate foreign personnel and cannot refuse them on any pretext.
ikr, it is amazing. I guess it's because the govt is willing to spend the money to hire people to clean the infrastructures and plus labor market is much cheaper than the US and other western nations.

I am an ordinary Chinese and I do this just to thank you. Because your videos let people all over the world know the real China. I just donated 500 US dollars to you on TH-cam. The hotel problem is actually an old policy that recently the government changed it, so technically any hotel can acommodate foreigners now, not like in the past when the hotel had to meet some level of quality inspections and so on for being able to host foreigners. But now they don't have excuses, they're just lazy to make the change, so If you find a problem like that nowadays, you can report it to the authorities.
It has nothing to do with the level of hotel facilities, it has something to do with whether the hotel has installed a passport scanning system, the passport scanner is networked with the entry-exit administration. Many hotels can't accommodate a few foreigners a year, so there is no passport scanner installed. Passport scanners are basically installed in hotels near general tourist attractions, even many cheap hotels have installed it, however, many hotels that are not tourist attractions are rarely installed, even some luxury hotels don't accept foreigners.
@@AngelaBBB Some hotels will take you to the police station to obtain a temporary residence certificate. However, it appears that the owner of this hotel is not willing to do so. They should have rejected the reservation upon seeing a foreign name.
It is not laziness of the hotels. The registering process is quite complicated and hotels get fined and announced once mistakes are made and found. There is really no reason for the hotels to tens of thousands over a few hundred. It is actually the government being the lazy one, shifting administration pressures to common small business.
@@AngelaBBB ID Scanners are for domestic guests. There is no scanners for foreigners coz there is no such database. You may see passport scanner at couple of airports, but it is voluntarily base and only open to less than twenty countries. Hotel staff needs to manually check and register all the info, which becomes the bottleneck and source of mistakes, which could lead to fine and punishments to the hotels.
I’m so sorry to hear that the hotel refused to accommodate you two. Despite the stress, you kept your smile and optimism. I adore that. If you guys need help finding and booking hotels for your upcoming travels, I can surely help.
it is true that you cant bring the spray , i had this experiences to lose my sunshine block spray in the entrance of the train station when i need to take the subway to the airport. Most of the hotel their customers is local Chinese, even the policy has already changed , it looks no one cares about it or no one pay attention to hear the new policy, ....starting from May 2024, all hotels are not allowed to refuse foreign passengers on the grounds of not having foreign-related qualifications. Maybe better to give a call or writ one email to the hotel that you booked... but for some international hotel like Hilton , Liz, holiday , Kempinski .... they definition no problem at all for all travelers
Looks like the film is made by 2024 Jan or Feb Beijng winter season... A netizen holding a foreign passport stated in June2023 that he had been denied hotel stays in Shenzhen, Taiyuan, and Beijing, and was also required by the hotel to go to the local immigration bureau to apply for qualifications. Finally, he was able to check in after communication with the police station ( 110 Police phone number). The netizen stated that hotels do not actually require qualifications to receive foreign guests, and generally only need to manually enter the information of foreign guests, pointing out that the shop owner finds it troublesome to receive foreign guests and transfers the cost to tourists. "Who will continue to travel to China in the future?"
Just to add one more point, you can even order food delivery on the train in advance from restaurants at the next stop, and at the next stop they will deliver to the attendant, and the attendant will deliver to your seat (of course for a little bit more money)..
Some hotels do not accept foreign guests because the location or qualifications of the hotel are not suitable for receiving foreign guests. Hotels that receive foreign guests need certain hardware requirements (such as opening international long-distance calls, international TV channels, Chinese and English menus, Chinese and English signboards, etc.) and software facilities. (Personnel must understand English, have relevant academic diplomas, and have the ability to receive foreigners), and must be registered and approved by relevant departments. There is another most important reason, that is, some hotels have not installed a public security registration system, and the guest information cannot be transmitted to the police. Then it is very likely that foreign criminals will stay overnight, which is quite dangerous. Therefore, some hotels do not accept foreign guests. The most important thing is for safety reasons!
hotels that do not accept foreigners not because that are not allowed/qualified, it is because they do not want to. Because it is more complicated to register foreign visitors (as opposed to local Chinese) to the authority, and there is the need of staff's ability to speak English. So they DO NOT WANT to accept foreigners.
The Chinese government issued a notice last month requesting that all hotels and B&Bs should not refuse bookings for foreign tourists to stay, but obviously your travel dates are before the notice was issued. China categorized its hotels into several classes before it opened up to tourism at the end of the last century, and classified the three-star hotels and above can be used for foreign guests, in order to make a good impression on western tourists. Hotels such as Marriott and Hilton are included in this category. This old policy was completely abolished in 2017, but some hotels have not been able to update their equipment to recognize foreign passports and register your information in the system linked to the authorities, so according to some security regulations they can't let you check in. In fact, Beijing abolished this policy back in 2003, so I highly doubt that your encounter was a result of the hotel's front desk didn't even knowing how to operate the check-in process for foreign tourists, which shouldn't have happened in the first place.
I rewatched the end and I think there's another possibility that maybe the room order you had originally booked was a discounted rate for a Chinese tour group, which is common in hotel bookings, and some websites may incorrectly offer bookings at that rate.
Tip of the day:) When checking the departure board (the biggest and the highest one), look for a color name associated with your train(unfortunately written in Chinese), usually displayed in the rightmost column.Once you reach the platform, you'll notice many colored emblem plates on the ground along the track, each with a number (like the green one on 10:26 and 10:39). Match your car number and color from the departure board with those on the ground. This indicates exactly where your car will stop, saving you a lot of time, especially if you're boarding the train from an intermediate station. This way, you can use the few minutes before the train arrives efficiently.
Actually no need to rush. The train is just split into 2 halves. Each half is actually a run-through passage. Just hop in any door of your half, then you are safe and you can look for you seat as casually as you like. Even you get on the wrong half, hop off at the next station and get back onboard.
Adding to this tip, your train's boarding gate number is on your electronic ticket. Take a closer look. About the refusal to house foreigners, I was once refused too, but I got my refund from the on-line booking website (CTRIP)
Yes, and if you arrive at the platform and the train is almost about to depart, to avoid missing it, you can directly enter the nearest carriage and then walk to your assigned carriage (because the interiors of train carriages are connected).
I saw this just the other day when the train attendant showed up with a bag of KFC for the woman sitting in the window seat of the train. The train only stopped at the station (Zhangjiakou, Hebei province) for 5 to 10 minutes so when she ordered, the local KFC joint would have had to prepare the order, and send it via courier to the train platform in that small window of time so it can be delivered to her.
@@tren133 In fact, as early as seven years ago, China's trains can provide food ordering service through the official app 12306, you must place an order at least one hour in advance, and then select the delivery train station, the conductor will deliver to your seat about ten minutes after arriving at the station
In fact, it is rare to see police officers in China. The uniformed personnel you generally see on the streets are usually security guards, traffic coordinators, and auxiliary police. They are not police officers. Most of the surveillance cameras on the streets are for monitoring traffic violations. These cameras are used to capture instances of speeding, illegal lane changes, honking, etc. Security checks in subways and high-speed trains are implemented to prevent bad actors from carrying knives, flammable, or explosive materials onto trains, ensuring the safety of passengers. In the end, I can only say that we are all ordinary people; no one is really paying attention to what we are doing. All these measures are in place to prevent bad things from happening, and I think that's a good thing.
When you factor in all the airport time (arriving early, checking in, waiting to board. Waiting for take off, then the time after landing) A 2 hr plane flight is actually a 4+hr time frame. So a 4 hr HSR could be faster
Not long ago, the Chinese government lifted this restriction, and no hotel in China is allowed to refuse foreigners to stay. In the past, Chinese hotels had to apply and go through the relevant procedures to be allowed to receive foreign tourists, and many small hotels did not go through these procedures in order to avoid trouble. So...
Glad to hear, I was planning an excursion to Sanxingdui museum and wanted to book the closest hotel within the camp and their website stated no foreigner and I tried to book through local tourist group and again, no foreigner. So, I didn’t get to go. I guess there are people didn’t get that memo.

Imagine traveling in China! I love taking the train for my journeys, and next time, I plan to visit many places. Thank you for sharing your experience! Regarding the issue you faced with a hotel refusing your booking due to an outdated policy: Previously, local governments considered both safety and service standards, so not all hotels accepted foreigners. However, things have changed this year. Hotels are no longer allowed to refuse service to foreigners. If you encounter this issue again, you can report it to the relevant authorities. Despite the frustration you faced when settling down, I appreciate that you kept smiling through it all.
Yesterday, I read a feature article in The Economist titled "China has become a scientific superpower."In 2019 The Economist surveyed the research landscape in the country and asked whether China could one day become a scientific superpower. Today, that question has been unequivocally answered: “yes”. Chinese scientists recently gained the edge in two closely watched measures of high-quality science, and the country’s growth in top-notch research shows no sign of slowing. The old science world order, dominated by America, Europe and Japan, is coming to an end.

Sorry about the hotel problem! I've only visited China during a transit day, so I've never heard of hotels not accepting foreigners. I plan to visit all of the Asian Disneylands in the next few years, so I'll keep this in mind. I like Devan's comment: when you're traveling, there are times when you just need to accept what is happening, remain calm, and look for a solution. I can be short-tempered when things go wrong in my own country, but when I travel, I'm surprisingly mellow and adaptable.

I noticed this problem when i was looking for a hotel for my foreign friends in 2017. And I booked them online, then when we were there, they said they were not able to host foreign guests, and since it was too late, i asked them to give us a solution, then they called police station or something, still it was nit okay to stay there. eventually, they recomended another one nearby. So there are some rules there I guessed. But I feel it's very inconvienient. So when we book hotels, we have to select the tag that said Applicable to foreign guests.
No, before May of this year, the law stipulated that hotels could not accept foreign tourists without obtaining a permit. This law was repealed in May of this year, and now foreign tourists can stay in any hotel in China
You travel to the capital, which often has leaders from other countries visiting or hosting large events. Therefore, passengers traveling to Beijing will be required to have stricter secondary security checks.

For foreigners, if they can book a hotel on the English version of Ctrip, it indicates that this hotel is available for foreigners to stay. When staying in a hotel in China, the registered guest information is synchronously transmitted to the local public security bureau. If it is a foreigner, more registration information is required. If the registration information is incomplete, the hotel will be fined. Small hotels are reluctant to receive foreigners because none of their staff understand English and they are afraid of being fined for incomplete registration information of foreigners.
Thanks you guys so much for your new remarkable video this week heading from Shanghai to Beijing, China in great joy to rides a great bullet train with other passengers in June of 2024❤❤❤

Hello from Los Angeles, California. When we take our public transportation--the rail that runs through the city (like the A-Line), there is a chance you will see fights, or get stabbed, or see some gangster eyeing another potential gangster. The Metrolink is a bit safer and "nicer" (not remotely like what one sees in the video) but it is no high-speed rail and it serves a miniscule amount of people that make up the entirety of the greater Los Angeles area. Hats off to China doing this--our media loves to BS and badmouth your country, so it's great that citizens or travelers like you show the reality of things.
I guess this train ride is even quicker than plane if you count 1 hr travel to Shanghai airport, 2 hr check-in time, 1,5 hr flight time, arrival and luggage collection 1 hr and travel to city 1 hr.
You could let the smart system speak English directly(The voice system also controls the curtains) or control it directly with the switch on the wall and turn off the TV with the remote control.
I am from China. The two bloggers are very polite and the ladies are so beautiful. Tibet in China is very very very beautiful. If you go there to shoot a video, I believe it will get a lot of attention. Believe me, it is so beautiful there.
Hi, I am a Chinese living in mainland China. I'm sorry to hear that you're having problems with the hotels. The Chinese public security authorities have been aware of the problem for a few months ago and have issued instructions to hotels, but I think it will take a while for all hotels to make the change. For now, the best thing to do is to add a filter when choosing a hotel and select "for foreign guests" in the Policy Services tab. I would be happy to recommend some of the larger chain hotels if you need them. Their services are usually more standardized.
@@ShevandDev I have a hunch that the weather will not be very good during your visit to Chongqing, because it is difficult to see sunshine in Chongqing in winter. It feels like the sky and the earth are gray. But I hope you have a good trip to Chongqing, Chongqing is my hometown, I love Chongqing.
China, whether it is a transportation hotel, almost all fields have been digitized, so it is recommended to make a good strategy in advance when traveling in China.
There are hotels which can't accommodate foreigners, because hotels which can accommodate foreigners need to connect to registration system of local police. Once foreigners check in, the staff need to register the info into the system. For budget hotels, they might not be connected yet, since they probably never had foreigners in their hotels. But early last month, local government already issued a supervisory announcement to urge those hotels and venders to upgrade their system, so that they can accommodate foreigners and also accept foreign debit and credit cards.
So why does the police need to know where I'm at? So a police state, I would have never guessed such from a communist country with 500 million facial recognition camera's.
Im from the Philippines… I really wanted to visit China , I know China is a very beautiful country (nature or cities) but I didnt know that it’s THISSSS BEAUTIFUL especially when I watched your Shanghai video😍
The Philippines should become smarter and cooperate with China for development, instead of being manipulated by the United States to invade the South China Sea, which will stop the Philippines from developing. The United States does not care about the Philippines. Their goal is to prevent China from driving the economic development of surrounding countries.🙂
I feel so sorry for you 🙁 !! I hope the hotel that refused you at least gave you a full refund !!! That's true. I heard that some hotels don't accept foreigners. But, from some comments I've read here, it seems to have changed... Anyway. That's also why we all watch your vlogs! It shows us the good and the bad. It alerts us to what we need to be aware of before traveling ourselves. Thank you for sharing your experience. It helps us a lot!
There are lots of hotels in China. But mostly only 3 stars and above hotels are registered and connects with their local security and police system for foreigners. These are for the safety of foreigners who comes and visit as most foreigners are not familiar with China whether its in the form of language or routes; should there be anything happens for foreigner or got lost somewhere, the local authorities can easily trace back to their accommodation
Got to know you from the ChongQing videos. My mother is from that city. Really nice blogging, hope you enjoyed your trips and all the best for the future!
This always happens on trains in China. I took a 1.5-hour train from Wuhan to Changsha. A middle-aged women shared her oranges (she has a whole bag to bring back home) to me and the university girl sitting next to her.
Oh that happened to me once. I was young and in a sleeper train on a slow train. I was half asleep and accidentally put my arm on the side of the bed (I was on the middle bunk) and the lady below decided to put oranges in my hand. Made my day 😊😊😊.
SH hongqiao train station. I used to travel between SH and BJ a lot. The train was always the best option, unlike the flight, there is no delay, the security check is way faster. The only downside for me is I always get to the train station at the last minute, so when I see people running in rush in behind you it reminds me of all the crazy running I did in this train station, out of breathe,.
What I love about Chinese trains is their punctuality. From those green skin soviet trains i took in China more than 2 decades to today's HSR, every single time the train departed on the second like this guy says. Second hand hits 12 and you feel it begin to glide.

If you need any information in the future, usually Alipay has it. Nearest hotels, hospital recommendations, booking a tour guide in museums, how to see pandas and call a taxi etc... basically everything.
We definitely booked way in advance which is why we were so confused, we did not know that not all hotels accept foreigners, i guess this was a bit of a shock to us. in all fairness, the staff used a translation app and were very kind and helpful. they even called a hotel nearby and confirmed that they do accept foreigners and told us where we might find another hotel. as travellers we are always learning 😍

With the Ferris Wheel and the Sam’s Club at the Global Harbor Mall…that is CHANGZHOU which is about 40 minutes via high speed train, but a 4 hour car drive! So your train took you through Changzhou North Railway Station which is directly across the street to where I live. So cool!❤
24:00 yes that is true for accommodate foreigner are licence required, so not every hotel / accommodation is available for foreigner, which is the case for a lot of budget hotels... I hope that will change or become standard to not have to check before booking.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in our practice of security checks in mass transits. Welcome to China and enjoy your trip!

I think it boils down to the hotel not having the passport scanning machine which they need for forgeign passports

That is dystopian.
Very professional explanation
In fact, the biggest reason is that Many hotels do not have passport scanners.
This way, you can use the few minutes before the train arrives efficiently.
thank you for the tip and will help with my trip to China
Even a Chinese doest know this. Tks.

You can order proper food by scanning the qr code on the chair, kfc, McDonald, Starbucks, you name it. It will be delivered to your seat.

I noticed this problem when i was looking for a hotel for my foreign friends in 2017.

Hi, I am a Chinese living in mainland China. I'm sorry to hear that you're having problems with the hotels. The Chinese public security authorities have been aware of the problem for a few months ago and have issued instructions to hotels, but I think it will take a while for all hotels to make the change.
