    Thanks for the tutorial!
For some of you: Make sure you "restart" and no shut down and reboot. On the final I restarted and it worked

    1. Open the task manager
    2. Scroll down to the "Windows Processes" section
    3. In this section find "Windows Explorer"
    4. Click in it and select restart.
    Worked for me!

Started my computer this morning and was experimenting with cortana. The start button and almost everything on the task bar disappeared. I went through this up to running the long command and everything came back after the restart. Saved several days of work re-installing applications. Thank you very much!

One other way to fix this error.
    1. Start "cmd" with admin.
    2. In cmd type
    " chkdsk c: /f "
    3. type Y in cmd
    4. Reboot ur pc
    5. Wait until the process is finished
    (This takes around 5-10 minutes)
    6. Now ur done!

Very great video, i'm sure it helped alot of people. However none of these solutions worked for me. Tried it several times as well with a totally new Windows 10 installation.
Turns out there's a setting that i couldn't turn off because Cortana and search indexing would freak out if i did.
The settings that i left untouched were in the "Privacy" settings.
    1. "General" > Check (turn on) "Let Windows track app launches to improve Start and search results"
    2. "Background apps" (at the bottom) > Check "Let apps run in the background", then UNcheck all apps you don't want running and it should work.
This got me a bit confused, since there are no mentioning of Cortana or Search indexing in those areas, but it worked for me.

thanks a lot for your video ... for me the last step worked that is "Reset OS" ... I lost all my apps (not the native ones) ... that wasn't a big deal. Anyway, that proved that one or more of the apps hindered with the working of OS! Some of these ill effects were - start menu not working, cortana not working, Store button not working, right click not working on tray, unable to clear or add anything to tray, discrepancy with standby or user login page

Thank you for your video. My problem is intermittent an happens once a day or every other day. And it happens on both users on my system. A simple restart will restore the start menu, Cortana and the notification window. I have tried everything in the video up to but not including a reset since I would have to reinstall all my apps which is quite time consuming and again there is no guarantee that the problem will not return. I have simple questions. Does Microsoft recognize that this problem is a bug? If so, are they working on a fix? Right now this very annoying. As an end user who just wants to be productive, have to go through the pain of resetting my machine is not appreciated. I would like to see MS take responsibility. However, thank you for all the grate service you provide.

I have found this on a forum, I have tried everything else, (Step 6 worked, but U did not want to migrate my account.
I found this solution on superuser, and huge thanks again for Fleet Command.
      Enjoy:
      "Do either of the following:
Create a new temporary user account with Administrative privileges, log out of your current account (very important) and log into the temporary account
Start your computer in Windows Recovery Environment
Delete, rename or move the following folder:
      C:\Users\[Your username]\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy
Note: In Windows Recovery Environment, C: can sometimes become D:, E: or even F:, depending on your computer's configuration.
Log back into your original account.
Cortana will not work immediately. (It is busy recreating the folder you just deleted.) But when it does, everything will be alright. Don't forget to delete the temporary user account.
Important notice: By the time I reached the conclusion to do this, I had ascertained that Windows Search Indexer was working okay and it was Cortana's problem that didn't show the result well. My evidence was that Cortana could find literally everything else (including my music) and searches from File Explorer worked well.
      Fleet Command"

Its good to see all possible fixes for WIN 10 Start Menu issue neatly put together in a video.
I've tried the solutions enlisted in this video, however I'm unable to fix this issue on one of our user PC.
Finally I decided to go with complete re installation of WIN 10.

SOLVED - I leave this here to help others… After trying many complicated supposed fixes across the internet (such as the above), the following worked for me.
Cause = may be to do with a window sizing issue, where the start menu size gets messed up and is super small or off the screen (I have a multi screen setup with imperfect connections so sometimes the screens are cycling through on/off which may have thrown things out)
    MY SOLUTION IS:
Go to SETTINGS > PERSONALISATION > START > then toggle all the toggles…. I changed them all but I suspect that turning on “Use Start Full Screen” + using 'full screen start' + then reverting to 'regular start' kicked the start menu back into gear.
Start menu is now back working without issue.

Thank you so much sir. I have tried to fix the issue for 3 whole days and nothing works. (My entire Task Bar: Start Button, Search, File Explorer, Internet, Microsoft Office Program etc. everything freeze up). Luckily, I found your video. By creating a new User account, all my problems are solved! Frankly, Windows 10 has given me so much trouble, I miss the old reliable Windows 7 very much. It never gave me any issues. Windows 10 is by far the most horrible Operating System I have ever encountered. They should not use something worse to replace something that works good. It's not the machine or software that goes bad. It's the people who create them, they get greedy and throw ethic away for quick profits, meanwhile the customers and Mother Earth suffer for all the garbage they create. From how they build things nowadays, we learn so much about people, companies & CEO. Can't they just listen to the suffering customers for once?

Had this problem yesterday. Tried some of the techniques shown here as well as other sites. Nothing worked until I tried rebooting in Safe Mode (via Msconfig.exe). In Safe Mode the Start Menu and taskbar icons returned. From there I restarted in Normal Mode. Works fine so far. (Should add that I also uninstalled Dropbox as I heard that could be part of the problem. Unsure if it made a difference).

    • @lochshiel
      @lochshiel 8 ปีที่แล้ว

You would have installed it before if its on your system. I don't believe its included with Windows 10. To search for it, open a folder. Then on the left directory column, scroll to This PC, then in the upper right search box put Dropbox (it should be saying Search This PC when you do). To reinstate, I have no idea if that's what made the difference as I was trying 2 things at once.
