This is my favorite Disney movie of all time. I've always loved the fact that the main character do not have a romantic arc, but a father-son arc instead. Jim's relationship with Silver is beautiful and profound and it's pretty satisfaing to see how he eventually becomes a responsible grown man. Thank you for the amazing review!

the fact that i enjoy this movie more as an adult than i did even as a child really says a lot, and it’s such a sin that disney sent it out to die. it’s such a visually and emotionally compelling story, and so unique and daring compared to other disney films. thanks for making this video on it!
I’m surprised this video doesn’t have as many views. I really like videos where these kinds of movies are talked about cause they are often brushed off. But Treasure Planet in my opinion is the most underrated Disney movie and one of my favorite movies of all time. I liked how it wasn’t the stereotypical princess or romance movie Disney was so famous for. It was different than other animated movies and it touched upon the subject of a rebellious teenager not knowing his place in the world. Something a lot of young people can relate to. I remember loving this movie as a child and now going back to it when I am now the same age Jim was in the movie, I can somewhat see myself in him. Also the movie has an underrated score. The background music is phenomenal and it has a beautiful rock-ballad as the main characters Theme which is also really unique in animated movies.
It's also important to note that it's been well-documented that Disney left Treasure Planet out to die, purposefully not marketing it much and additionally intentionally releasing it at the same time as other more heavily-marketed movies. At least one actor and several other people involved in the Treasure Planet project have acknowledged this occurrence within Disney. To me, the movie has no more flaws, generally speaking, than other Disney films within 10 years before or after it, but was determined by Disney to flop so that they could focus on live action, the supposed "wave of the future". Sigh. Still one of my siblings' and I's favourite movies.
I just watched this movie yesterday. it was on my list to watch since I have disney+ and I hadn't seen some of these movies like treasure planet, atlantis, etc. I was absolutely blown away. it immediately nearly topped my list for favorite animated movies, and I hope to share it with all the young kids in my life. it's so great to see this video, though it makes me sad that this movie is still not getting much attention. thanks for contributing to the conversation!
+Eli May Agreed! I had never heard of this movie and then few days back I got a recommendation of Silver's speech scene. I decided to watch the movie and... MIND=BLOWN🤯💥 I still can't believe that Disney made this😳
Seriously loved this!! I literally teared up at the end when Silver's speech was there, I just wasn't expecting it. Also love the jaunty sailor tune (the name escapes me now) at the end too. This made me so happy that you loved this film as much as I have!
I fricking love Treasure planet. I have never met someone that has seen it except my family. The animation is flawless, the soundtrack is one of the best, Jims character is just so relatable and i love how this movie took a risk and showed the struggles of parental abandonment and being a single mother. I love this movie so much, it will forever be my favorite disney movie
Same! Whenever my family went on long road trips me and my siblings would watch this movie in the backseat. We always wanted to watch it. In fact, it’s still one of my favourites to this day.
i'm teaching Treasure Planet this week in an intro to film class and this video was so helpful for someone who mostly studies live action film! thank you for this, three years later haha
I'm honoured that my video could help you so much! I'm pleasantly surprised and thankful that so many people are still watching my older essays. :) Thank you for the kind words!
12:43 I completely agree with u on this! A movie which takes risks may not gt numbers in the box office but it will surely be imprinted on the minds of its viewers. Also they did not change the original setting of the book (a adventure for treasure). Usually whenever ppl try to make adaptations of books they ruin the whole point of the book. This time... *they nailed it.* That is why I love Treasure Planet. You did a brilliant job in making ppl understand why this movie is so epic. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you so much for making this video and giving the film the recognition it deserves! It is one of the best films I have ever seen and leaves you with the feeling that you have seen something that is MORE. Something that goes beyond ordinary entertainment, something that rattles the stars....
Also, it is quite a gem seeing as how it appeals to all audiences but it is also very appealing for young boys I'd imagine. Which is kind of rare from Disney. Disney has always been known for its wonderfully developed female characters! And the only other Disney film really centered around a developed male character is Aladdin (and kinda Prince Naveen or Flynn Rider but even so...), but even then it's not really his story entirely. So I think young boys that are Disney or Pixar fans ought to really enjoy this film!!
Disney's well known for its princesses, but dang was this a boys movie if i ever saw one. Sure you had emperors new groove, lion king, brother bear, etc. but here you had regular, angsty/moody, "radical" teenage boy with daddy issues finding a father figure in long john silver in a world filled with sci-fi aliens, steam punk mechanics and space pirates. This movie just looked so mesmerizingly cool i couldn't wait to see it in theaters...until it slipped passed me and I had to wait for it to come out for home release 5 months. seriously all i saw was that solar surfing scene and never found out when it would be released. Shame on Disney.
The fact that I love Silvers character more than anything and especially his movie (plus obsessing ocer Tarzan and Jurassic Park growing up, before I was even 6) just proves how much of a tomboy I am. I never cared for the Princesses despite being a girl. 14:51
When it comes to the open air caravels, and being able to breath while sailing space is possibly due to the ships generating a life support bubble. Life support is never addressed, but ship generated artificial gravity is. With that in mind, it can be assumed that life support also exist. Depending on the perimeter of the atmosphere, the first-mate being thrown overboard while attached to a lifeline and able to breathe is plausible. Even if bothered by spacefaring caravels, the magnificence of the beautiful animation is superb. Keeping the caravels, harks back to the original "Treasure Island" in this scifi adaptation.
This is one of my favorite films, the animation and story are great but what really makes it awesome is the backgrounds, I wish more people would like it cause it is one of the greatest animated films ever made.
Dreamworks Rise of The Guardians, Monster vs Alien,Cool World, Don bluth Titan A.E,Treasure Planet,Don bluth Thumbelina,The Last Unicorn,The Black Cauldron Or Quest for Camelot are highly Underrated!
I fell in love with this film when it first came out but I am in love with this film even more now as an adult. I am so glad there's no romance in this! I am still deeply attached to the characters especially Jim. I rewatched this film the past 3 days.
You call Treasure Planet flawed and say that it has multiple plot holes, but you never pointed out any any specific examples or explained why. All you said was that Ben might be too overbearing. I don’t think this movie is flawed or has any plot holes. In fact, I think it’s one of the best (if not the best) Disney movies for its ingenuity and heartwarming father-son story.
Great video essay! I have been rewatching golden movies and while searching for the film here on YT I found your channel. I have always loved and shared this film with my family and friends. Most of the people I meet for the first time we startup with which movies we enjoy the most or which music genre or just which restaurant they enjoy. Most people I have met all say the same thing always 'Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron, Treasure Planet and Atlantis The Lost Empire' It's crazy how Disney execs said no to Ron Clements and John Musker into delivering a convincing advertisement and they said *no to making the sequel* But they made Atlantis 1, 2, & 3? Treasure Planet 2 would have been a real treasure to have and to see what happens to Jim, his mother and the other characters afterwards.
Treasure Planet was the first movie that I fell madly in love with based on cinematography and the 3D-2D mix animation (I was a pre-teen when the film came out.) Found out recentlty that the Prince of Egypt had the same technique but the steampunk-space-science fiction setting is way more attractive. This was Disney's Star Wars before Star Wars.
This wasn't my absolute favorite movie as a kid (if anything it was my sister's favorite meanwhile mine was The Incredibles), but it was one of my favorites and I've always loved Disney and Pixar so I thought it was just incredible! The plot itself was always very appealing to me too, though the music wasn't my favorite (but I've come to appreciate it more). I never knew as a kid that this movie was a flop when it came out, or up till now it seems because when people list Disney movies Treasure Planet seems to be forgotten or recalled as a fail. I just knew it as another great Disney movie so I didn't think other people wouldn't know it that way!! Wow... it's not perfect but it's still magical and entertaining, it should be given more credit
This movie to me have NO FLAW.....now days if you mention anyone the names of John Silver, Jim Hawkins....nobody says TREASURE ISLAND.....everyone says TREASURE PLANET that's how powerful this story was, it have become the definitive version of this tale, everything in this film works, and the little nitpicks critics (and un-creative ignorants like Nostalgia Critic) says about this universe incredible creative world pale in comparison of how many who saw the film wanted to be in a world like this, the characters, the world, the animation, the story, everything for me is 10 out of 10...and in a way, films like Treasure Planet, the Iron Giant, Tarzan, Simbad Legend of the Seven Seas, are in a way responsible for the style of blending CG with 2D and without these innovations....we might not have SPIDERVERSE, ARCANE or PUSS IN BOOTS THE LAST WISH, the raw sketch these films tried was perfected years later and we have to extra appreciate the risk, John Musker and Ron Clements take with a film like this.
This and Tarzan are my 2 top favourite Disney movies of all time xD Btw what’re the songs you’ve used in this video xD I can hear them subtly and they’re catchy as all get out

understand that underrated is such a bad like word for this movie; as a kid This was the best in my opinion or 1 of the best like films movies i had ever seen actually and now as i am older I want to buy it to keep it forever
I havent seen the movie since the mid to late 2000s. But now growned up, am I right to say that I think it's sick (as in bad) Jim thinks of Silver fondly at the end? In the novel, Jim doesnt think of Silver like that. But I'm glad that in both book and animated film, Silver leaves Jim and the boy turns out better/a bit richer at the end.
I get what you're saying about BEN... but I'm sorry he still annoys the absolute hell out of me. The 3D/2D experimentation they did on Silver is arguably better and more fluid (I didn't even know he wasn't wholly hand drawn until I looked up the movie as a teen), without the tonal dissonance of Martin Short being over the top. If this movie ever gets remade, I hope they do BEN like R2-D2 or Wall-E and don't voice him, because in the current form it feels like a family friendly Beta version of Claptrap ended up in the movie.
