i started to watch this movie for nostalgia reasons, but then i remembered how good this movie really was.
Now, i watch it from time to time... mostly to re-live the memories that i had when i was a child, but also because it's a great movie.

You'd briefly touched on it, but absolutely one of my favorite things about this movie is how "real" and lived-in the world feels. It's something that some of my all-time favorites like Star Wars, Dune, and The Lord of the Rings do so well. The universe is completely different from our reality but they don't really spend any time explaining it to us. Instead, we're just shown the characters existing in the world, and through that existence, it feels alive.

I'm 29 now. I will say now, the only reason this movie bombed was because of the severe and pointed lack of promotionals. I didn't know about the movie until well after my father died, which was a year after he did. So this movie holds a special place in my heart, along with another more recent movie from 2020 by Pixar (Onward). Losing a father is very hard on any child, be it by them just walking out of the house and never coming home, or passing away in the wee hours of the night, and having to listen to doctors rush to try to help him or hearing him vomit behind you in the ambulance.
And it's a movie that takes a classic story and ups it to something fantastical and ultimately fun, which is a shame since Disney wanted to hide it much like Atlantis and a few other movies.

I absolutely adore this movie. I can't remember the last time Disney had a positive message for boys but I think this may have been the last time they did and it sticks with me throughout everything. This is a movie that should be seen by every teenage boy. Every boy has been Jim.

I was born a day after Treasure Planet was put into theaters. Even though this isn’t my favorite Disney movie, I have a soft spot for it because of scenes like the one where John Silver gives a speech to Jim on the ship. For some reason that scene felt very personal since I was born a day after the movie came out lol. It felt as if the movie was directly talking to me during that scene

  • @JinxFan2003

Being born a year after the movie came out, I didn't get the chance to see Treasure Planet in theaters as a kid. My only knowledge of the movie was what I had seen through trailers on DVDs. Throughout the years though, I kept seeing mentions of how good of a movie it was. Finally, when I was about 16, I rented it digitally. I was absolutely blown away by its quality! And, like you said in the video, the action and animation are incredible, but what stuck with me the most was the relationship Jim and John Silver. Jim being, in my opinion, one of Disney's most relatable protagonists, seeing as the flashbacks in the "I'm Still Here" scene paralleled my relationship with my own father. The writing of Jim's character and the bond he forms with Silver is surprisingly grounded, considering it appears in an action movie about space pirates. Anyway, all of this to say, although I didn't grow up with this movie, I still have a great appreciation for it and connection to it

  • @andresf.7563

One of the things i feel the most when thinking on jim and his father is this image that... He never came back for jim.
I'd like to think it is no coincidence that jim desires adventures, something tells me that his father wasn't so far off. And it probably came to be that his father choose adventure over his own family. His father never came back for him, he left and never returned, i think it presents the Best during the scene where the memories show, as silver does come back for Jim to take him along for a ride around a comet.
Jim is what his father was not, he would never abandon his mother the same way. There is even a more sad thought that maybe his father went out on an adventure like jim, but didn't make it back, and left jim feeling like if only he had been there too he could have done something about it.

It’s always been a shame this movie didn’t do well, as I feel like it offers a truly optimistic thematic message along with some genuine catharsis for anyone (especially boys) who had to grapple with the absence of a father figure in their own life. Silver is definitely one of my all time favourite antagonists, he’s a great example of how to actually redeem a story’s villain too!

I'm so glad that more people are starting to talk about this movie as time goes on.
"Treasure Planet" is a film that was a major comfort film to me growing up because I related to Jim a lot in my youth, and it's one that I constantly return to since I feel it defined me a lot. Your video really took the words out of my mouth when explaining what makes the film so great and why it pains me that Disney tries to sweep it under the rug (although in recent media they have been acknowledging its existence so, that's an improvement!).
I remember seeing "Treasure Planet" in theaters when it first came out, despite the lack of marketing and it changed my life to the point that, when my mom bought the DVD, I would watch it repeatedly for *years*. Jim Hawkins is still one of my favorite protagonists to this day, and I think his relevance grows more and more as time goes on.
I'm really happy that I was born in the late 90s to experience, and appreciate, this film even if it gets swept under the rug.
Wonderful video, Mason. Ever since I first watched your "Anastasia" video, your topics have always been interesting to listen to and well articulated.
I can't wait to tune into the next one!

This movie also stands out to me now as one of the few that didn't ever shy away from male/male bonding without any "no homo" qualifiers attached, even with all of the physical connection displayed between the two main characters. I can remember few movies from my childhood that showed such healthy relationships between every character involved.
I also appreciate the captain so much, and the way she was written. She is never questioned or disrespected, and even though she does end up in a relationship with the professor by the end of the movie, she is never really sexualised or degraded (like not harassed or talked down to) in order to make her more "romanceable". Like, right from the start, it's clear that the professor find her attractive, but the moment the connection comes is when she allows herself to be vulnerable and open up to him. It was a very special moment, as well, after so many movies where characters just are together because the movie says they will be, and it let you see their relationship grow.
I loved this movie when I was growing up, and it really makes me happy that so many people also enjoyed it.

Honestly, Treasure Planet is that movie for me, too. I still remember EXACTLY where I was when I first saw it in theaters and being absolutely awestruck by it. The fact that that memory has been untouched when so much of my childhood is fuzzy at best/absent at worst speaks volumes about the impact it had on me.

I think the goal of the shots of his dad leaving is to show the confusion and fear that kids feel when seeing adults do things that hurt them that they dont understand. it extremely vague, i dont think we even see the dads face, but its also super real and apparent. the dad left, and never came back. and like jim, we’ll never know, and that can send a kid especially spiraling down into fear and sadness.

And when the time comes to really test the cut of your sails and show what you're made of....well I hope I'm there catching some of the light coming off ya that day." "Look at ya, glowing like a solar fire. You're something special Jim. You're gonna rattle the stars ya are." These are literally two of the most uplifting speeches I've ever heard & what speaks to everyone whoever saw this movie. Sorry this is gonna be long but I can't thank you enough for making and sharing this video. This movie has meant the world to me all my life. It's the one movie I always watch for comfort and never get tired of. And the one chosen most to watch with my brother throughout our childhood but even now. Seeing people still appreciate and talk about it with such passion after it had kinda been left in the dust to be forgotten, is so reassuring and heartwarming. I'm so glad it matters so much to other people too and it deserves all the praise it gets! Seeing a video on Treasure Planet in my recs in 2024 had me stupid excited and you described all these feeings the story captures beautifully.
I think the only other films that can make me feel this level of comfort while also making me emotional are ghibli (Whisper of the heart, Ponyo, Howl's moving castle), Lotr and a few old disney classics (Sleeping Beauty)
I found your channel through your video on Hunchback of Notre Dame and I'm glad to see more from you!

This movie has a special little place in my heart not just because it's amazing, but due to the way I got to experience it.
I won a contest for early private showing tickets, as a 12yo, for a local theater. I think my parents thought it was a scam [it was all through email and they didn't know I'd entered] right up until we got to the theater and found indeed it was a legit contest the theater was hosting and there were no strings attached. I think I was just so excited about winning and getting to see this cool movie that my parents were willing to make the drive and risk it being bs. Lol. It ended up being the best thing ever!

I usually put this movie and Atlantis the lost empire on the same footing as underrated early 2000s Disney movies that deserved much more love and support that if got back then. I have the DVDs of both films and Atlantis' sequel as well and even now in my 20s I still rewatch both film every year. If Disney ever wants to make this and Atlantis into a live-action remake with the same story I'll be first in line to watch it when that ever comes out. These 2 movies would be awesome in live-action.

And yet, it has a hint of reality and relatability to it.
