I originally started TH-cam as a hobby, so a lot of my content is born out of stuff I love. I never expected that anyone would actually watch my videos...
On this channel, I make video essays, reviews, and retrospectives about all the things that made my childhood memorable. I happen to be a professional writer too, so I love using my channel as a way to talk about storytelling and the mechanics of plot. I use Disney films as simple illustrations for expressing these principles.
I’m also a fan of cinema in general, and I enjoy studying film history, so that shows up a lot in my work. I try to do a lot of research for my videos and consider a film from multiple different angles, including from the perspective of the artists themselves. Hopefully, everyone can walk away with something from my videos that they can use, whether they liked the movie that I’m talking about or not. Thank you for taking this journey with me!

The Hunchback of Notre Dame: An Underrated Disney Masterpiece (Video Essay and Review)
In this retrospective video essay, I'll be analyzing one of the most stunning and thematically bold adaptations that Disney Animation Studios ever attempted. Specifically, I'll be taking a look at its unique approach to the adaptation process, as well as its interesting relationship with the Victor Hugo classic that inspired it. I try to look at this classic with fresh eyes, renewing and rekindling my passion for animation innovation in the process! I hope you all enjoy it!
This is the first part of a two part series on the Hunchback of Notre Dame. My desire is to pay tribute to what I consider a incredibly underrated film and to give it the time and attention it deserves...hence why it will be my longest video essay yet, even after splitting it into two parts!
The next part will take a closer look at the innovation and artistry involved in the making of the film! As always, thank you so much for watching!

Pirates of the Caribbean vs Indiana Jones: Masterpieces of Adventure (Video Essay)

I'm so glad I found it.. I was wondering if someone made some fan animation about this after watching one video where there was Review of 2 cartoons about Trasure Island (Sovet and Disney one) and I start searching and found this. This cartoon is in my heart forever Good job M8
I didn't realize Robin Hood wasn't very liked, I recall listening to it on vinyl quite a few times while just laying on the floor.
Hi buddy. Love the video, love you man
Radical feminism is very radical and I like watching home alone with the church fam
Question, what are your thoughts on Oliver and Company? Cause... I recommend looking at the relationship between Fagin and Sykes. It's really interesting and kind of similar to Frollo and Qausimodo's relationship. While it may focus on the animal characters, this movie doesn't hesitate to show the darker parts of New York about poverty, debt, and exploitation. While Sykes may not be as nuanced as Frollo, he is the most realistic villain I've seen that doesn't belong in a Disney film. No song, unique design, campy voice, or wacky personality. Just an unsympathetic loanshark who preys on the weak. While it shows Frollo's crimes onscreen, Sykes's crimes are more... implied. From Sykes's dialogue and screentime, he's a man who manipulates an entire city to believe he's just a businessman who owns a shipyard to repair ships and build them as he specifically targets the poverty into using them for his own pleasure as he neglects, and abuses his two Dobermen to make them become like him.
I really love Robin Hood and I think it deserves so much credit than how everyone treats it where the same can’t be said to Ralph Wrecks the Internet for destroying what made the first Wreck it Ralph Movie Perfect!
Even Ralph Breaks the Internet wasn’t that good and I’m glad it’s not good because it sucks so bad that I want to wreck its face!
This video make me cry thx for making my day better
Walt Disney 0:50 ™ =×
i have a question, what do you mean by limited options in a branded studio
We love The movie so much that We also made a sculpture inspired from The movie th-cam.com/video/6wMKtjOwr70/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Qyd4KqOTFsaxuZ1F
I love the movie, in our humble opinion it is a masterpiece of movie making and deserves more respect and atention 🤗🏆🥇👌💐🌺👍👏🥳
This is my favorite Disney movie and Claude Frollo is my favorite Disney Villain 🖤💜❤️.
I remember this movie well! As a kid it taught me about "continuity". Keep looking at Prince John's fingers through the movie! The rings on his fingers are constantly disappearing, changing, moving, altering in numbers, or the jewels are doing the same! LOL!!
SB considered dated, you say, by MOST modern audiences!? 💥NOT!💥 Do we consider Mozart and Chopin dated for not using synthesizers? Urbane viewers understand historical context.
One of the reasons why the Disney Renaissance era is my favorite Disney era is b/c they updated their female protagonists without preaching a political agenda. This is my honest opinion but I think Disney has become way too PC these last 10+ years
Best Disney Princess Movie, Facts And No One Can Change My Mind
poor bill
Amazing editing ❤
People keep forgetting also that this movie, and beauty and the beast, are the reason why Shrek exists.
I love Walt Disney’s Alice in Wonderland and the The original books with all of my heart but I do wonder what it would be like if it were closer to the book like adding characters such as The Duchess, The Cook, The mock turtle, The Griffin, etc or heck even adding characters from through the looking glass
I love this movie, and my heart aches for a sequel.
This movie is stunning visually
This movie Is a prime example of how Disney used to be they need to make stories with a similar basis. Robin Hood told in this format was amazing.
I need to correct you. The novel centres not around Esmeralda, it centres around the Building. Really. The original novel has in French the title Notre Dame de Paris. The Name of the Cathedral
I appreciate your analysis, even though I don’t consider it a masterpiece. It is masterful in animation, but I don’t see that same level of mastery in storytelling. The Fairy Godmothers felt more like the real main characters fighting Maleficent who is a great villain. I just find both Aurora and Prince Phillip to be incredibly boring characters who don’t drive the narrative forward all that much. They also barely have any lines of dialogue. Those production problems I think still hamper this film somewhat. I still think it is really good, but I think it could have been better, especially with the supposed lead characters in the prince and the princess.
The best thing is that the bard is voiced by the great country singer Rodger Miller really giving it that western feeling.
my favorite part, too. All the music is so good.
I don’t understand why people think it lacked a plot.
The problem is is that people get fairy tales and sci-fi confused. This movie was more of a fairy tale. Fairytales gives you the ability to portray stories with deeper and true meaning in a more freer, and non-serious way. On the flipside sci-fi, while it has more realistic laws fails to portray deeper truths in the story. Star Trek is sci-fi Star Wars is a fairytale
You do the "masterpiece" justice with your own masterful commentary. Bravo!
It's bigger than just a movie it's a life circle so emotional 😢
Before, they tried to adapt a real life story with Pocahontas and it ended up feeling hollow because they didn't take the history seriously enough. Then with this movie, they took a classic novel of the same name, which was a very dark story, and made the film as dark as they could for kids and parents to handle, keeping the film respectful to the book despite the mariad of changes that would come with entertaining children.
This is my absolute favourite Disney film ever, one of my favourite films period. I love Victor Hugo's novel, but I also love what they did with the Disney film. Even though it captures the themes and tone of the book, it's still a family-friendly film because it has adult appeal, but doesn't have any scenes that are violently graphic or sexually explicit, and, unless you count hell as a swear word, no strong language. I will also defend the gargoyles to the death. Having humour and lighter moments blended with a serious tone, and dark themes can work because it can create a sense of hope and feeling of goodness amongst dark and depressing times. They're present to remind Quasimodo that he's human and encourage him to be good, contrary to Frollo raising him to believe that he's a monster
Masterpiece Movie ! thanks for sharing !
One of my most emotional moments.. am middle aged, married late, lost the relationships in a wink and now going through life back in my lonely way.. with a permanent emotional scar added to my already complex life i had before i got married.. this movie and the life that Carl and Ellie led.. is something of an aspiration for me.. thanks for the makers.. i guess i ll grow old with this visualisation of a dream i had for my life..
This was poignant
They should’ve released it under the touchstone pictures banner
Just rewatched the first Inside Out in preparation for the sequel today. Also on an Inside Out analysis rabbit hole on TH-cam.
Subscribing in the hope you'll continue, already learned something novel from this vid👍
Thank you! I am very grateful for the sub! I hope to have something new up relatively soon. :)
understand that underrated is such a bad like word for this movie; as a kid This was the best in my opinion or 1 of the best like films movies i had ever seen actually and now as i am older I want to buy it to keep it forever
Good video
This guy has been rambling for 10 minutes and hasn't explained anything about this movie.
He explained almost the entire movie
@dynomusic4356 He explained nothing. Clearly you've seen the film in question. That's why his garrulous meandering makes sense to you.
@@paullebon323 okay well, he was pointing out all of the little details and parallels that the movie has in it and some of the things the director was trying to teach the audience. That’s called explaining the movie. Perhaps you mean he didn’t explain something more than the main themes, like a theory about the movie.
Why is Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) is labeled as tonally inconsistent when they share the same exact tone as Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1990), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), Batman: The Animated Series (1992-1995/1997-2000), X-Men: The Animated Series (1994-2000), Superman: The Animated Series (1996-2002), Spider-Man: The Animated Series (1996-2002), Justice League: The Animated Series (2002-2005), Batman: Mask of The Phantasm (1993), Gargoyles (1994-1996), Corpse Bride (2005), Cowboy Bebop (1999-2002), and Naruto (2002-2005)? Isn't this a clear double standard? Have you guys seen Eddie Murphy's 'The Haunted Mansion' (2003) or the overrated shitty Toy Story 3 (2010)? Those movies epitomize tonal inconsistency far more than Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996).
Wonderful video!!
LOVE the dragon!!
I didn't see the live action Malevolent because I felt they were an abomination when they were announced
Abbas been my favorite movie since 1959,when I saw it seven times. I love this movie. It absolutely is a masterpiece!
Mary Wickes's last movie before she passed away.
amazing and underrated video!
Thank you!
I like both of them ❤
