Greetings Henrik! I used to train tae kwon do from an early age, for about 14 years, into my late teens. I was under the belief that it had value as a martial art that is usefull for self defence. After university I decided I wanted to try a more "rounded"(?) martial art, that is more focused on live sparring, so I began training grappling/bjj. I quickly realised that all those years training tae kwon do, didnt really give me a usefull toolset for self defence. Sure, I became flexible, and had good kicks, but as tae kwon do is almost void of grappling/ground game, it would leave me helpless if my oponent(in a street self defence situation) would close the distance and take me down on the ground. I understand that you have spent a large portion of your life practicing tkd and hapkido, and you are grand master in these arts. Have you ever considered to start training grappling/bjj? I know many people who started training bjj in their 40s and 50s and have gained great skills, that is actually applicable to real life situations in a hand to hand combat situation for self defence. What are your thoughts about this? Regardless, as a previous tkd practitioner of many years, I really want to recommend you to start it. Its never too late!:)

Thank you for your comment. I agree that if you look at the technique of traditional martial arts it doesn't work in a tactical situation. I have som knowledge of BJJ, and it's a great martial art. But also BJJ has its limits, like all kinds of martial arts. I have been teaching tactical self defence to many different groups in Norway. Many years I was hired to teach the military in Norway. Then I had to teach very different from a class in my gym. I think the different martial arts is useless if the practitioner don't manage to broaden their horizon. This is one of the reason I try to live by the mantra: Always a student. Even though I have turned 50, I still have soooooo myúch more to learn, and I'm not stuck to my style, I rather think of it as a base for more learning.
