Hi! I am glad I found your videos. I have a problem with my n54 e93 which I can t solve. Maybe you can help me please. I blew the engine a few weeks ago from missfires. BRO, i been chasing down a misfire on my n52 for a month now, its just getting worse, white smoke from the tail pipe looks like someone is blowing smoke rings, misfiring like crazy, and after i watched this, i opened my oil cap and put my sniffer down there, literally smells like a gas can, im going to change cylinder 1 injector and oil tomorrow. hopefully all is good after that. thanks :D
Very informative. My 2012 62000km f10 N20 produces a little rough idle on cold start as the rpm settles down from 1200rpm to 700rpm just as your car. It also produces a white smoke on cold start if not driven for 2 days or more. It also produces a strong fuel odor on cold start. The vehicle has a sluggish acceleration in low gears. New spark plugs from fcp euro but they all have black soot. No error code or check engine light. I do alot of short distance drives. So the rough idle issue started right after replacing timing chain kit. The car performs awesome once fully warmed up. Could it be the injectors leaking fuel? Please help
I would say yes there is a good chance you’re having injector issues. Sounds like leaking into the cylinder, which would explain fuel smell at cold start. It’s excess fuel not being burnt. That would lead to black plugs too. I would do injectors and plugs at the same time.
The way your engine blows up with a leaky injector is the worst. It can go boom and maybe enough to contain without blowing the whole car apart. But man it’s sketchy. Even I owned a rx8 it can blow a fireball the size of the Range Rover behind me. Anyways both cars feel like a fire hazard.
I was on cruise control going about 80 and then I got a ticking sound but it only starts happening when I hit about 45 mph anyone know what the problem could be
Hi, I've got a problem with my E90 and I'm wondering what it could be. The symptoms started a couple of weeks ago with, for example, if I shifted from 2nd gear to 3rd gear and stepped on the gas, it started to chop. Kept it like that for a couple of weeks and now it's pretty bad, if I do a cold start the whole car moves, shakes sideways. One day there was no power in it at all. The fault code reader shows misfire on the 6 cylinder, a guy at a workshop put in a used ignition coil and then it got a little better but not great, but have bought 6 new spark plugs, 6 new ignition coils to see if there might be something there, otherwise so maybe it's the fuel injector?
I had a misfire changed all coils and plugs and now it’s still doing it but giving random misfire codes and smells like gas and white smoke coming from under rear of car I hope it’s just injectors
Hey.. e92 coupe issues. I’ve had rough idle for a while esp after a long drive then restart.. but today, it dies while reversing into drive. And yellow EML came on.. thoughts? 👍🏻
Do you know if injectors will cause afr reading to fluctuate for 1 of the banks? I got all new o2s (front n back), reset adaptation, but still getting bank 2 lambda after cat code....
Nice video i'm having same symptoms car starts harder and have misfire no code thou, more on cylinder 3 and I can hear extra loud tick and I have noticed white smoke in morning but goes away, also feels sluggish.
Same exact symptoms as me man. It was cylinder 3 that was my issue. No cel just a misfire and smoke on startup. Changed injectors and it was like a new car!!
Awesome thanks for your reply I don't have same car but everything you described is what is going on with me really bad acceleration and bad gas mileage
Sounds like more than one issue. The sluggishness is probably because in needs the carbon cleaned out, I did brand new index 12s, plugs, coils, carbon cleaning, and all that good stuff. Transformed the way it ran.. I still get some misfire pops on cold starts and some white smoke on cold starts to. Leaned towards eldor coils and new turbos now lol
White smoke can be a lot of things. Coolant yes as in blown head gasket, but white smoke at start up can be a failing injector-you just have to put a few puzzle pieces together. If you have a rough idle only for a minute or so with a bit of white smoke, it’s likely an injector.
@@Out_the_mud94 The last car brand I had was Audi and the equivalent app was VCDS. It had a group you could look at that had a live readout of each cyclinder of how many misfires were being detected. I was hoping there was something like that. But ya, I’m learning to read logs but it’s painful for me lol. I can see where there’s timing corrections but I know there are other indicators in logs for misfiring(like A/F) I just get confused looking at them and how to use it in Datazap or whatever it is
I have a full straight pipe n54 catless dps and all , at random my car will smoke like crazy , I replaced a upstream o2 sensor and that fixed some of my issues but still a good amount of smoke with a fuel smell , any takes on what this could be ?
@@SpeedCultureStudios thanks for the ideas , I’ve been perplexed by this , I have a failed downstream o2 and the other one is throwing a code I think cause of my catless dps, but as far as I know the downstreams don’t affect the fuel ratio ? Idk , thanks you for the comment !
When I started my car and start driving for good 20 mins, and then shut it off for two hours while I was at the store, and then I started the car again. I got stuck in traffic was sitting at full stop idling for about 5 mins and then a lot smoke was coming out from my exhaust for good few mins then it went away. Is that a sign of bad injectors? I know it can't be my turbos. Thanks.
Would green diesel suddenly block the fuel filter? Because as I was trying to jump start the car, the fumes suddenly stopped coming from the exhaust. It's as if something suddenly blocked?😭
Had a code saying one of my injectors was bad I replaced it without coding them but when I took out my old one there was oil on the tip ? Would that be cause my the valve cover having a crack on it ?
The valve cover may not be cracked but the gasket could definitely be leaking. If you have a bad injector, that cylinder is not firing properly either so it may have just been build up and not necessarily “leaked” oil
@@kevthecompass6217 other than clean them off or replace them, no. Replace the gasket sure but what I am saying is that if you put a good injector in there you may not get that build up anymore
@@kevthecompass6217 that’s the N54 for you lol. Coil packs, spark plugs and clean banks solenoids. What index injector did you replace it with? Did you replace all of them? Did you code them?
Very helpful video. Thanks! If you have stock exhaust, and if the exhaust smell very strong, did you find that to be a potential sign of failing injector as well?
I was having the same issue with a strong odor of fuel coming from the car. After doing some research I found out that if the smell is coming from the left rear wheel well there could be a crack in your fuel pressure regulator. I pulled the rear seats off to access the FPR and it had cracks on the top part which was causing it to leak fuel and give off the strong fuel smell.
With this being said I think I have bad injectors and they are pretty expensive for index 12 at the moment how long can I drive like this I think I can pay them in full up but up until a month from now
It’s not great to drive on bad injectors. It puts unnecessary strain on the engine if running lean and can cause issues if you have injectors leaking into your cylinders. Are you getting codes?
My car is giving me back misfires, when it’s nicely warmed up after driving it for a while and when I push the gas peddle it makes popping sounds coming from the exhaust what can it be? And It’s not giving me any codes. PLEASE HELP!
Definitely could be injectors. Could also be bad O2 sensors. “Map” changes once temp is reached so far might start and cold idle fine but after warm it runs funny. O2 sensors are easy to change and relatively inexpensive. Change them out and see if there’s a difference. Clean your vanos solenoids too.
Hey, I’ve been getting random/multiple misfires pretty much in all my cylinders & terrible gas mileage so gradually I was leaning towards my injectors but when I accelerate hard (only when accelerating hard) when driving the engine seems to lose power & heavy white smoke comes out. Could it possibly be a blown head gasket instead or injectors ?
Could possibly be. Check your coolant and oil and see what it looks like. I’d like chocolate milk it’s a head gasket. You may have blown turbos as well or bad coil packs
Hey, I recently switched out all my spark plugs and even the timing chain since my mechanic recommended it, but it still hasn’t gone away.; Could the problems still be failing injectors if the tapping increases when I accelerate or is it likely a valve lifted issue? For some reason I am also getting gas-smelling white smoke out of my exhaust too.
It can definitely be injectors. They are very noisy in the n54 anyway, but if you’re also smelling fuel, you could have a leaking injector/s causing the car to run rich.
hey so quick question uhm I have super thick white smoke coming from exhaust and some super light/faint smoke coming from hood do you think it could be the head gasket or fuel injectors or maybe something more?
Heavy white smoke out the exhaust sounds like a head gasket to me. Could be bad turbos/seals also. Check your coolant to see if there is evidence of oil in it.
For sure! Your engine could be getting way too much fuel in a given cylinder if they are leaking or not getting any fuel in one ore multiple cylinders if they are clogged. It can cause very poor engine operation and misfires.
Im not sure if its my injector that's failing or my hpfp, Im getting codes 29CD - Combustion misfires, cylinder 1, 2AAF Fuel pump, plausibility and 2E18 - Firing Cylinder 1. its on limp mode now. Can i switch the injector 1 and 2 to see if im getting cylinder 2 misfire to determine if in fact it is the injector thats the issue? and can i do that without replacing the rings and decompressor rings simply to diagnose? or can i casue damage this way? My original issue was after hard acceleration especially on the highway the car was choking / shaking. I have replaced the coils and spark plugs , which seemed to fix the issue for a month. few days ago i accelerated hard again and it went into limp mode and i am getting the codes above. Beforfe the limp mode I also got a code 29D9 Misfire at low tank fill level. prior and in addition the the codes above. Any suggestions? if it was the HPFP failing wouldnt I have issues with more than 1 cylinder?
I'm still learning a lot about this platform myself, but this is exactly what I did. I was getting a cylinder 4 misfire. I moved it to #3 and cleared the codes. Code returned as a cylinder 3 misfire. Seemed pretty obvious to me. Now, the small seals at the tip of the injectors, those form to the openings in the cylinder head, so technically, I would not suggest running the car for long without replacing those seals once removed, but if you know one of your injectors is bad, you'll be replacing it anyway. Have you tried checking plugs and coil packs first? Moving coil packs is much easier than moving injectors. If you have a bad one, the misfire will follow it as well.
Speed Culture Studios I recently changed the coils and plugs , I want to diagnose if the injector is bad and do what I did , switch , clear codes and run it for few seconds to see the codes again, I’m just worried switching them without changing the rings , hopefully running it for 30sec or less won’t damage anything ?
I think the risk of burning the injector seat area in the head is always there, it just increases with higher pressures(ie: boost). That said, if you’re misfire is occurring only at idle, AND you’re able to swap 2 injectors very quickly(under 30 seconds?), it probably wouldn’t be an issue. Just remember before driving that the pressure (and more importantly COMBUSTION)will find any discrepancies in the injector seal.
Yea I only get my misfire on the highway, under heavy load. But if I drive easy. Nothing at all. It kinda stalls, like “brrrrp” and then sometimes goes into limp mode. If I let off the gas soon enough it wont go to limp mode.
It can be black due to excess fuel, but excess fuel due to a leaking injector can and will manifest as white smoke at start up particularly in a 335i, which was the case in my situation.
Hey mate, I've been having problems lately as well. Recently replaced all spark plugs and coils but still having a misfire when I start up, the car seems to struggle to keep it's RPM's and I sometimes here the engine drop RPM quickly then go back to normal, is that a injector problem? Also, I can't hit the rev limiter either, if I do, it has a spat attack and comes up saying multiple misfires on cylinder 1 and cylinder 2 when I red line it to 7k.. Just wondering if U could shine some light on what it may be, if it is injectors gonna fork out the money to get index 12's 😬
Sounds like a high potential that you have failing injectors. Could be a vanos issue too, so cleaning them first is a simple trick. Also O2 sensors are a relatively inexpensive fix, but it always seems to come back to injectors. Don’t forget to change plugs again once you upgrade injectors.
@@Out_the_mud94 Thanks for that information but I have found my Bank 1 before cat O2 sensor is damaged because of when the mechanic put my VRSF downpipes in, he didn't line the pipes up right and damaged the O2, bank 1 is stuck at 21 AFR so it would be pulling timing and causing all sorts of misfires

Receiving new coils today and will install them this Saturday 9/12 along with inspecting the new spark plugs after sitting overnight to see if there are any fuel on injector 2 and 3.
If so it’s injector 2 and 3
Hopefully coils clear it up!
Speed Culture Studios wasn’t the coils, had the new spark plugs in and swapped coils 2 to 1 and 3 to 4 and SES still on. Just purchased 6 new injectors today
Aaron Tang oh dang! Sucks to bite that bullet but it’ll run like a new car now!
Gotta resolve it quick before its gets worst than being injectors lol
@@A____T3750 hi Aaron, was it the injectors?
BRO, i been chasing down a misfire on my n52 for a month now, its just getting worse, white smoke from the tail pipe looks like someone is blowing smoke rings, misfiring like crazy, and after i watched this, i opened my oil cap and put my sniffer down there, literally smells like a gas can, im going to change cylinder 1 injector and oil tomorrow. hopefully all is good after that. thanks :D
That’ll do it! Just to be safe, I’d put fresh oil in it. Idle it for 10-20 minutes then drain it and put fresh oil in it again.
I got charged 2k to fix 3.. and a oil leak

@SpeedCultureStudios thanks for your reply. How do I check to confirm it's the injectors leaking fuel and not the HPFP?
The way your engine blows up with a leaky injector is the worst. It can go boom and maybe enough to contain without blowing the whole car apart. But man it’s sketchy. Even I owned a rx8 it can blow a fireball the size of the Range Rover behind me. Anyways both cars feel like a fire hazard.
I was on cruise control going about 80 and then I got a ticking sound but it only starts happening when I hit about 45 mph anyone know what the problem could be
Thank you my 230e Benz is having contaminated engine oil!I think it's them thank you black smoke 2
Yep that’s probably it
Hi, I've got a problem with my E90 and I'm wondering what it could be.
Could definitely be the injector. And if it’s the injector, you’ll want to change the spark plug again
Who else liked when their car made those pops at cold start and sounded like it was cammed when you had bad fuel injectors? lol
Here I am thinking the knocking noise is a bad engine 💀
Bro this was literally me
Me right now lol
Faaack me too , it sounds awesome but then it feels like it slips when it warms up :(
The n55 will put you threw it is that my rod knocking or injector going at it
I had a misfire changed all coils and plugs and now it’s still doing it but giving random misfire codes and smells like gas and white smoke coming from under rear of car I hope it’s just injectors
Sounds like injectors.
Hey.. e92 coupe issues.
I would say that it could. If you have not changed out injectors, its very possibly you are running rich or running lean on one bank. No misfires?
@@SpeedCultureStudios appreciate it, no misfire codes yet. Just o2 code. Ya it never been replaced before. I'm going to replace it with them 12s.
Can Bad Injectors make the small fuel rails on top vibrate more than the others ?
I suppose so. Anything is possible
I thought white smoke means coolant burning. Should it be black carbon smoke?
White smoke can be a lot of things. Coolant yes as in blown head gasket, but white smoke at start up can be a failing injector-you just have to put a few puzzle pieces together. If you have a rough idle only for a minute or so with a bit of white smoke, it’s likely an injector.
Is it possible to live monitor all/individual cylinder misfires w/ProTool or mhd or any other software?
Mhd may allow that. I didn’t get too far into Mhd before selling the car, so I hope someone else can chime in for you!
I data log should give you the info you are looking for. Just need somebody who can look at it and understand it
@@Out_the_mud94 The last car brand I had was Audi and the equivalent app was VCDS. It had a group you could look at that had a live readout of each cyclinder of how many misfires were being detected. I was hoping there was something like that.
But ya, I’m learning to read logs but it’s painful for me lol. I can see where there’s timing corrections but I know there are other indicators in logs for misfiring(like A/F) I just get confused looking at them and how to use it in Datazap or whatever it is
would another symptom be a very strong gas smell?
Yes definitely could be.
But also check your fuel regulator housing under the back seat driver side. I have a video on that as well!

I have a full straight pipe n54 catless dps and all , at random my car will smoke like crazy , I replaced a upstream o2 sensor and that fixed some of my issues but still a good amount of smoke with a fuel smell , any takes on what this could be ?
Could be a leaking injector or bad coil pack. Showing any codes or misfires? Could have a bad turbo too but I’d check the cheap and easy stuff first
@@SpeedCultureStudios thanks for the ideas , I’ve been perplexed by this , I have a failed downstream o2 and the other one is throwing a code I think cause of my catless dps, but as far as I know the downstreams don’t affect the fuel ratio ? Idk , thanks you for the comment !
And no misfires anymore I had bank 2 misfires till I replaced my bank 2 sensor 1 o2

With new injectors, it got slightly quieter, but these are pretty noisy engines, especially when you have the engine cover off

Potentially.
I know its been 5 months but i had the same issue u have. I fixed it by replacing the pcv valve with an RB PCV.
It can always been the turbos. New ones can fail. But start with pvc if you haven’t yet lol
never mix index 11or 12s w lower index #s. 11and 12s are only able to function properly with ea other just a fyi
That is correct. I believe I mention that in other videos. Good point!
Would green diesel suddenly block the fuel filter? Because as I was trying to jump start the car, the fumes suddenly stopped coming from the exhaust. It's as if something suddenly blocked?😭
Did you put diesel in the car?
@@SpeedCultureStudios yes it's a diesel with about half a tank of green in it.
Thank you for very informative problem of the misfires caused by fuel injectors
Glad it was helpful!
@@SpeedCultureStudios is there any way to remove that build up ? I plan on doing my valve cover this week and I’m tired of it misfiring lol

Did u buy new injectors and what kind
Yes. From FCP euro. Totally solved the issue. Car ran perfectly after that!
Excellent video! Thank you!
Thanks for taking a look!
Do i need to change all of them? Can i just change the bad ones?
It’s always best to change them all. At the very least, change the three on a single bank.
Very helpful video. Thanks! If you have stock exhaust, and if the exhaust smell very strong, did you find that to be a potential sign of failing injector as well?
I did not notice extra strong fuel smell as it related to the injectors, but it could certainly be a sign.
@@robertharo6081 I have a video posted of this repair you’re talking about as well.

Could be a number of things, but potentially yes. Could be bad turbo seals too

Loved the video !
Thank you!!
What if it starts running shitty after a 30 minute drive???
Definitely could be injectors. Could also be bad O2 sensors. “Map” changes once temp is reached so far might start and cold idle fine but after warm it runs funny. O2 sensors are easy to change and relatively inexpensive. Change them out and see if there’s a difference. Clean your vanos solenoids too.
I have every sign lol I think it's time to change my injectors. Great video
Probably a good idea!
any update?
Hey, I’ve been getting random/multiple misfires pretty much in all my cylinders & terrible gas mileage so gradually I was leaning towards my injectors but when I accelerate hard (only when accelerating hard) when driving the engine seems to lose power & heavy white smoke comes out. Could it possibly be a blown head gasket instead or injectors ?
Could possibly be. Check your coolant and oil and see what it looks like. I’d like chocolate milk it’s a head gasket. You may have blown turbos as well or bad coil packs
Do i need to code the new injectors?
Yes
Greeeeaaaaat video!!!
Thanks a lot!
Hey, I recently switched out all my spark plugs and even the timing chain since my mechanic recommended it, but it still hasn’t gone away.;
Could the problems still be failing injectors if the tapping increases when I accelerate or is it likely a valve lifted issue? For some reason I am also getting gas-smelling white smoke out of my exhaust too.
It can definitely be injectors. They are very noisy in the n54 anyway, but if you’re also smelling fuel, you could have a leaking injector/s causing the car to run rich.
I wonder how much for a replacement for 2007 525i
I’m not sure which injectors those take but these are expensive!
You can always consider rebuilt original ones! :)
hey so quick question uhm I have super thick white smoke coming from exhaust and some super light/faint smoke coming from hood do you think it could be the head gasket or fuel injectors or maybe something more?
Heavy white smoke out the exhaust sounds like a head gasket to me. Could be bad turbos/seals also. Check your coolant to see if there is evidence of oil in it.
@@SpeedCultureStudios yeah when it first happened there was some chocolate milk where the oil cap goes

How many injectors does a bmw 5 series have
Which 5 series?
@@SpeedCultureStudios 535d 2006
Hi mate. Would failing injectors also cause huge power loss?
@@dee1251 did you switch them?
If I let off the gas soon enough it wont go to limp mode.
excess fuel would be black smoke
Have you cleaned the intake ports? Mine were so bad when I got the car I was having same issues as you
@@Out_the_mud94 Thanks for that information but I have found my Bank 1 before cat O2 sensor is damaged because of when the mechanic put my VRSF downpipes in, he didn't line the pipes up right and damaged the O2, bank 1 is stuck at 21 AFR so it would be pulling timing and causing all sorts of misfires
