How to TEST your N54 Injectors AT HOME (Leaking Injector Symptoms!)

- Today, we're looking at my friend's 335i and testing the old injectors to see which ones have failed. Since I bought this car (and then sold it to my buddy) it has had the following symptoms:
- poor mpg
- long crank before starting
- misfire on cold or warm start
- slight misfire at redlights
- black smoke under acceleration (rich condition)
The theory was that the injectors were stuck partially open at all times, so when he turned off the engine, the leftover fuel in the high pressure rail would leak into the cylinder and thus deplete the pressure for the next engine start. It would also mean that the injectors leaking fuel would be running richer than the others. So to test the injectors, we hooked them up to the rail, forced them to stay closed, but then pressurized the rail by cranking the motor. You'll see how easy it is to spot the bad injectors...

This is brilliant, way better than some cleaning services which test the injectors at low pressures.

Ultrasonic cleaning might help extend the life of your old injectors and new o rings + filters if they have them.

I've watched this like 7 times this past week prepping for me to to it today 😂 only thing is I'm testing my newly used injectors with bank 2 hard lines so I don't have to pull my 3 injectors that never misfire out of the car, only because I only ordered 3 decoupler and Teflon seals

That's the only way to test em and be sure. When I first got my 335 I checked the injectors. 4 wer spraying and 2 dripped. Cold start was fine but a hot start took a while and was a bit rough. $1400 later and the new injectors were in and she was running great. I hope the injectors on my n63tu last more than 100k
Well Chris. 6 months ago I purchased 6 index 9 remanufactured injectors. I got a 60k km warranty. Everything was okay. But a few weeks ago the car had a rough colt start again. I checked the injectors and nr3,4 and 5 are leaking. I was warned not to buy remanufactured injectors but I didn't have the money for index 12 ones, back then. The remanufactured injectors were €700. Now I'm saving money again for 6 index 12 new BMW injectors. But the prices went sky high lately. They're now € 2450,- ( $2620) at the dealership. Absolutely insane! Dutch regards, Nico.

Yeah my friend almost bought a set of those "remanufactured" ones as well, not sure what the results would have been. Once they get stuck open and start leaking, there's no way of refurbishing them.
It's completely outrageous how much the injectors cost now. Im hoping fixing supply chain issues will alleviate the issue!
@thebimmerbarn Hey man, what adaptations did you reset after installing the Index 12s? I've only been directed to, and subsequently did, reset both lamda ones. Should I have done more?

Should I disconect EKP module and crank it to lose the rail pressure ?
How long was it sitting before you disconected the rail lines from injectors?
I want to avoid fuel all over the engine bay

I would test the index 12s too. I would also extend one injector wiring to reach each "new" index 12 injector to see if they are open and their injection patterns. Never trust ebay and there are FAKE index 12 out there and when I did what u did last year, I could not even program the compensation number into DME and 3 out of 6 index 12 I bought have the same compensation number.

You should though have tested the “new” ones the same way to actually KNOW if they had the same problem or not.
Hello sir, I also encountered the same situation, is there any fault code? Does the tachometer pointer drop first and then rise after the engine is cold started? car shaking

I have N53 and done the test 4 injectors were leaking, I put new ones and it gets worse now ( 4 injectors was used but I tested them as you did) don't know what to do next:-)!
So only need to remove electrical connector to injectors and disconnect coil pack connectors? Thanks.
On the bench to check under different modes. sometimes the injector starts to drip after the tests.
Hey guys I need help with inpa. I have replaced my msd80 dme with msd81 and was wondering if I should be ok to choose n54 msd80 option on inpa to calibrate my injectors.

e60 535i has no throttle and idels up and down..but mine was not the fuse like in one of your vids .. plz help. new gas peddle , new throttle body. no water in DME ever.
Test the new index 12’s. I have a set with less than 10000km on them & they leaked enough to spin a bearing.
Hey couldnt you just unplug injectors and coils and turn the engine over then pull plugs to see which is wet? That way you dont have to remove the injectors
Help! So my car is completely fine on idle. Never skips a beat. But upon pushing the throttle a bit it will misfire. It’s fine on low rpms but high rpms. It will throw a cylinder 1 misfire and start to stumble. Would this be the injector?
Do you install new decouplers and teflon seals each time injector is taken out of the engine? :)

Do the injectors generally fail in any other way then leaking?
My cyl 6 injector is leaking for sure as the plug is soaked in fuel after just a couple hrs.
As i want to go for DI delete when Nexsys works out the kinks i dont want to buy all 6 new Index 12s, so figured i would buy a couple used ones for spare, flip my existing ones and test them along with the "new" used ones, and just switch the ones that leak.
Is there any point in bringing them somewhere to get them flow/spray pattern tested or is it just the leaking to be worried about?
Answering myself. They do Gail in other ways. I tried 2x used injectors and they didn't leak but caused heavy misfiring instead... I gave up and bought new instead.
Im having an issue when i start getting on accelerator at around 3 to 4 rpm the car feels like it jerks n looses power it only does it sometimes .
I did this but my motor never cranked and made an ugly sound. Did I miss somethingv

I just pulled out one injector just to look at it. I replaced my valve cover gasket a few months ago but when I took the injector out it was covered in oil. Does that mean it was just old oil?
Yeah old oil, there's no good way to clean up the valley down there where oil collects and takes forever to burn off.
What do you mean by "Adaptation reset" ?
If one is leaking how do you fix it?

No battery reprogram needed, unless you replaced it!

Used INPA and reset all adaptations on the second page, in the DME.

Will the injector get damaged if i clean it with a scuff pad with brake cleaner on the tip?

I did same test as you.. but i have N53 engine.. none of the injector made a single leak, i changed all plugs and coils.. but there are still symptoms like rough idle, shaking, vibrating on cold start, check engine.. i dont know what to do
Read the fault codes, and that should help you pinpoint the problem. Sounds like it could be fuel related! Good luck
Check if the injector is loose if so add a new decoupler and o ring compressed
can you do this for non coded injectors? just to test if theyre leaking.

Did you takeout spark plugs?
No reason to, just unplug the ignition coils!

@@TheBimmerBarn i just did the test and none of my injectors leaked at all....im still getting gas in the oil though. Could this be a bad seal on the hpfp?
Also did a compression test on the engine and it checks out fine.
@@samah713 that's the only other place I can think off, or the car could be running too rich, which could be caused by bad oxygen sensors. Good luck!
Your HPFP could be going bad too. There's a seal that when failed causes fuel to get in the oil.
What happens if you don't code those?

never a bad idea to replace sparkplugs, they are wear parts after all
You didn’t bleed the lines after you removed the hard lines. How do you know there was pressurized fuel to the car injector. You don’t there full of air.
If there leaking, the air will be pushed out first, followed by the gas. Common sense
