Great stuff Josh...its a Sea Horse....The seahorse logo is born on January 21,1932.It was the logo of the french carrier Air Orient which flew in the french colonies in southeast Asia.
In 1933,Air Orient merged with a few other french carriers to become Air France.
They chose to keep the Air Orient logo and it became the AF logo until today.
This logo is surnamed "La crevette" (the shrimp)
Why a seahorse? First because there was a direct link between air transport and the sea .A lot of flights were operated with seaplane
The seahorse log was chosen by Air Orient because:
    The horse head = Power
The fish tail = Sea plane
    The bird wings= Speed

Accurate ! two little adds :
      - not exactley a sea-horse, but head of Pegasus (the flying horse) and tail of an "Annam Dragon" (Annam was a french colony in Orient). But that explanation was too complicated as, at the beginning, everyone saw a sea-horse :)
      - it was chosen by the "directeur d'Air Orient", Maurice Noguès, who picked a design drawn by Joseph Marrast, an architect who used to work for Air Orient and Couailler, one of the poster designer.

As a former Air France flight attendant I am so pleased and proud that you enjoyed your Air France experience! It was a great company to work for.
I have heard of a relatively new French airline called La Compagnie. In fact I recently ran into one of their crews on a rooftop bar in NYC. I heard them speaking French and they were an odd mixture of well-dressed young people so I knew they had to be a crew. We had a chat. It's an all business class airline. I'd love to see your review of them!
My recent great transatlantic experience was on KLM business class. I thought it was lovely, both directions (and as a former Air France FA, I am very critical of all flights I take). This was JFK to Amsterdam and then Amsterdam to Croatia and back. It was fairly similar to your Air France experience meal and service-wise, and as the two airlines have merged (you know more about that than I) that is not surprising. I'm sure there is a level of coordination in training and service. KLM also gave one tray and lifted the appetizer to replace with the main. Please try KLM transatlantic business class. I thoroughly approved.
PS. I love your reviews! Keep up the good work! Also, in my day (late 1980's) that hippocamp was on the buttons of our uniform!

Air France was my first favorite airline! We traveled often when we were kids (due to dad's work) so Air France was our go to carrier in the 80s and 90s. Their service then as it is now has always been top notch. They make it so memorable for kids too. We used to love the kid's boxes they gave us with model planes, coloring books, a story book about the airlines, etc...
I remember the crew being so nice the one time when the 3 of us kids were stuck in Economy while my parents sat in First (shake my head yup at the time it was thing throwing the kids in the back) and the first class cabin was empty so they let us join my parent!

It's the old logo of Air Orient which merged with other companies to form Air France in 1933. It is nicknamed "La Crevette", i.e. "the shrimp" and represents the Hippocampus (winged seahorse) from ancient Greek mythology. Hope that helps! Awesome review by the way ;)

I flew on this business cabin from Paris to Fort de France (Martinique) last month. It was a 777-200. But since the beginning of the year, on the 777-300 who also goes to the caribbeans and to Reunion Island, you have a brand new cabin with a new design (new light, bigger screen with new entertainment system etc...).

My favorite international flight was on a Delta flight from Charles de Gaulle in Paris to LAX taken in May of this year. I think it was a 777 but I'm not sure. But what I do remember is that it was Business Class Suites set-up. The suites were awesome! Very roomy, plenty of storage, beds that lie completely flat (I was not sliding towards my feet which has happened on other flights), excellent food, very friendly and efficient flight crew. The suites each have a little door which, when closed, tells the flight attendants "Do Not Disturb." I was spoiled with those suites. We are planning a trip to Africa via Paris so I need to find those suites again!

    Hi Josh,
The seahorse logo (also known as “La Crevette” - the shrimp) was adopted by Air France from its predecessor Air Orient. It used to be on the aircraft tail from 1933 to 1976 on the likes of the A320 or on the nose / side of the aircraft next to the Air France (or Groupe Air France) insignia. It was then transferred to the engines after the Air France-KLM merger.

Hi’ Josh , just a little explanation on the “ all in one” business class meal tray that you had on this AF flight . On transatlantic flights ( east cost/ Paris), passengers used to complain about the time they were spending having dinner and not enjoying the comfort of their seat. That’s why , in the late 90 ies, AF decided to propose on these “short” long haul flights ( I have flown Montreal to Paris in 5h45 min )this dinner with the starter, the cheese and the dessert already on the tray .
Nevertheless thank you for all those nice and exotic trips ( I recommend the one you made about this afghanese airline).

FYI, my best flight was AF first class 747-200 CDG-YYZ stopping in YMX in mid-January 1988. Mirabel had no jet bridges and all doors both sides had to be left open while refueling in -30 temperature. Snow coming into the cabin. Crew handed out extra blankets. Food and service phenomenal.
    Please add Senegal A330-neo.
    Thanks for sharing.

Hi, Josh! The past several Christmases I've enjoyed five transatlantic segments (between JFK New York and CDG Paris) aboard the Air France 777 in the new reverse herringbone business cabin. It's a good product indeed. I like the cabin, the seat module and the service. The crews are always very accommodating and make passengers both comfortable and happy. Nothing more to say. It's just a very enjoyable product and I love the Triple-Seven. One return was aboard the AF A380 where business is upstairs and is not a lie-flat design. I didn't like it nearly as much, even though I traditionally just love a 380 flight. Still, I think I'm still in love with one of the flight attendants inbound to NYC. She told me she'd never had a passenger quite like me. I had to take it as a compliment, but you never know! (No, her smile told the truth.) Happy flying. You're a great reviewer.

Great Video! have used Air France for several flights recently travelling to South America and back and really was super impressed with the product and especially the excellent professional service and very good food standards. I highly recommend Air France and will always look to use them long haul connecting via Paris from Edinburgh (my base for journey starts) rather than British Airways via London who regrettably as the main flag carrier of the UK just seem to lag behind the likes of Air France and KLM for quality and value of product. Ironically for the sake of an hour two extra travelling time Air France and also KLM generally offer a much more competitive price on business class fares. Cheers Josh you travel blogs are always very interesting and informative to view :)

I flew SAS and United trans-atlantic from CPH to IAD and back, and IAD to CDG respectively in Business and had very good experiences. They both have new Business classes (the new SAS Business on A330/340 that is my personal favorite outside of the Gulf carriers and United Polaris on a 787-9) that were really good products. They were defenitely better than some other European carriers that I tried trans-atlantic in Business like LH and BA Club World.

  • @pancracedewinter7581

Josh, it all depends on the crew and the route. I have traveled many times Paris CDG to Chicago on AF. Certainly, I would say it is not what it used to be. The AF crew used to be much more refined in their manners and their outfits (even wearing navy blue cotton gloves when welcoming passengers). It's much changed today. The last time I flew on AF, CDG-Chicago, I was in their business class, a 2-3-2 configuration. You seem to find yourself in empty business class cabins quite often, I do not unfortunately, and that day I ended up in the back of a crowded business class cabin. On that route, the seats are side by side. I wish we had been able to enjoy that herringbone configuration, even if it is not the most updated layout, but at least it is better than the side by side where there is no feeling of privacy in the cabin at all. On this travel, there was a baby crib in the business cabin (!) (the business cabin is actually made of two cabins, one: seats 1-4, an other: seat 5 to 9). The baby crib is in the second business cabin, just where I was. Of course, the poor thing cried the whole way!! Coming from India, the parents thought a few months old baby could endure a 22 hour travel plan. No comments...
I found the service on the flight rather average. Not much attention, I thought, was given to the passengers, although we were enduring a crying baby and three loud detached workers with no manners or respect for others. Half way to Chicago my entertainment system stopped working. I told the attendant who did not seem very concerned... letting me in the "deal with it" mode. I don't think she even apologized. I must say I am like you. I am a very nice person, attentive to others specially when traveling, discreet. It does not always serve you. This was probably the worst business class experience. Certainly, if you take out the crying baby for 7 hours, the loud workers, it would have helped enjoy the flight a little more.
American Airlines has a direct flight to CDG from Chicago that is much better, their flagship actually, with a better seat configuration. Otherwise, I would definitely recommend Iberia, Chicago-Madrid, on their new Dreamliner aircraft (they also have a nice lounge in Madrid). Even with a stop in Spain's capital city, it's worth the extra 2-3 hours of traveling: new cabin, comfortable, good layout (1-2-1), friendly crew, great food... no crib.

Happened to me once in Emirates First from Sao Paulo to Dubai. When I entered the plane, the whole crew had this funny grin. "We been expecting you Mr. ....". I was like what's going on now? Anyway, all alone 15 hours and they almost killed me with over-service and friendliness. Memorable flight.

Nice review Josh. Interesting as we are flying Air France 777 to Singapore (enroute to Perth) next January. We will have middle seats on row 4 though as we are travelling together with our son who will be 17 months old.
I always have the problem of turbulence, normally when I have a full glass of red wine.

On my one and only upgrade from coach to 1st class I had far too much to drink. The crew was so attentive that they kept a fresh drink in front of me. I could have said "No thanks" at any time but I was enjoying my free 1st class upgrade experience. The flight on which I was booked was an overbooked flight. At the gate the airline asked for volunteers to wait for the next flight. I was on an extended vacation and had all the time in the world. No one else volunteered so a few were bumped against their will. Because I was the only volunteer to wait for the next flight, I got the free upgrade to 1st class. It was a really great experience. It was United Airlines on a cross-country coast-to-coast flight from Atlanta to San Francisco way back in the 1990s.

I flew AF to BKK on 10th June in the B787-9 with same config and I was surprised as well with a perfect and nice crew (although the flight was full). The seat is better than the one e.g. QATAR because you have more legroom especially in the height. I enjoyed a very good sleep and the food was fantastic as well. If the price is fine (I paid 1608€ return from Vienna to BKK) it would be definitely my choice again.

The food looked quite underwhelming but importantly you said it tasted great and I think a lot of us have come across the dishes that look terrible but end up tasting amazing.
I think it was probably easier for them to be so accommodating regarding filming as you were lucky enough to get the cabin to yourself but credit where it is due that they were obviously going out of their way to make sure you got great footage and that's great to see

For me, as I usually travel alone, if I'm going to splurge and go Business, the minimum I want is a window and direct aisle access. The reverse herringbone dose that, but if you can do better I'm in!

Great review & great insight of Air France Business Class hard product! 👍
Sure you get lots of attention & fantastic service esp when you are the only passenger in the smaller (more private) 3 rows Business Class cabin.
Didn’t see you film the main Business Class cabin at the front, were there any other Business Class passengers at the front main cabin at all?

Recently took one of their other CDG-YUL flights (AF344), in a 777-200 as well. I hadn't got any experience with AF for ages, I was expecting something pretty low, but I ended up being bluffed by the quality of service and comfort in economy. I travelled between Europe in Canada with KLM, Air Canada, Brussels Airlines and Air France, and Air France was the best. I would have never expected it!
only issue: you need to go through CDG :-p

I'm flying Air France [Business Class] to Edinburgh, Scotland [via Paris]. This will be my first trip on Air France, so I'm looking forward to the experience. This was a great preview of what to expect.
I'll depart from JFK on their Boeing 777-200 / 200ER. It was listed as their NEW Business Class. I don't know what the differences will be, but it will be nice.
    Happy Travels!!!!

Josh you are both informative and amusing. Great review. I think Air France is a solid product for transatlantic. Good food, wine and a charming crew. What more could you ask for?

Yes, please do make a video about the A330neo when possible, I have always wanted to try flying this plane but unfortunately, none of the airlines I usually fly have them.

I took Air France from Detroit to Paris and end back for a 20 day vacation to Paris and Berlin snd enjoed their service. I will rank Air France below KLM and Singapore airlines in termd of food.
