- These interesting ruins are located on a sandy headland overlooking Bannow bay where the Normans first invaded Ireland in 1169. The Church constructed in the 13th century in a Romanesque style is the only remnant of the lost Norman town of Bannow which is said to have sunk beneath the sands in the 16th century when the silt in the bay rose and swept over Bannow Island. The town which was of some importance and had nine ‘named’ streets disappeared with the exception of the top of the chimney of the town hall. The church only survived because it was positioned 30 feet above sea level.
The Church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary consists of a nave and chancel and is now surrounded by a more modern graveyard enclosure. The walls of the Church are crenellated giving it a very fortified appearance.
A small sandy car park is provided as the Church is surrounded by a graveyard still in use. A stile gives you access and you enter the ruins by a doorway in the South wall of the nave. A small font lies just inside but apparently a more ornate font was removed in the past and now resides in the Church in Danescastle.
There are some interesting artefacts to see within including a large stone 14th century grave slab and an open stone coffin. The chancel area contains a large arched East window and some tombs.

Thanks for the tour. Greetings from the Midwest U.S.
Hey, how are you
Sorry I missed the live, Sue!! My carer was rather late!!
What an ABSOLUTELY FASCINATING church ruins and graveyard!! It's good to see that the graveyard is still being used, and not abandoned and neglected, like we've seen in some places you've visited!!
I've NEVER heard of Prince Michael before!! He sounds like my kind of guy!!
Thanks for sharing this gem of a place with us, Sue!! XXXX ❤👍👏💞🤗
No worries Nadia, hope all is good with you, Prince Michael and Princess Nadia ❤️💖
HI NADIA, NICE TO SEE YOU IN THE COMMENTS! ♥️🙏🇮🇪
@@janetslicer3637 Hi Janet!! Nice to see you too!! Which part of Ireland are you from?! XXXX 🤗💞
@@nadiabrook7871 I am Canadian born but live in the US now. My Dad was born and raised (now deceased) and all his relatives are in Northern Ireland. Have been to both the Republic and Northern Ireland. My Mum's family was from the Republic of Ireland but some went to Canada. Hence where I was born. My son is our first generation American. At the rate things are going, I don't know how proud I should be of that. 🙄😳😶
@@janetslicer3637 How interesting!! My maternal grandmother was from the North of Ireland (Ballykelly in Londonderry), and my maternal grandfather was from Waterford in the Republic of Ireland!! My paternal side is a mixture of Chinese and Filipino, and I was born in Malaysia!! I'm quite the hybrid, but VERY proud of ALL of my roots!! XXXX 🤣💞🤗
Missed from the get go, that's what I get for taking a nap. The doorways, I thought that not only were the people shorter but the doorways were lower to help preserve the heat in the building. That along with some soil building up on the ground would account for some of the lowering and the settling of the building itself. Just my thoughts on it. Thanks to you and GV and Morty.
That actually makes perfect sense, oh I love a nap now and then too
@@SerenitySueGraveyardsI'm thinking that the low header above the doorways of the old church could have been meant to cause those who entered to bow as one does before an alter whereas they bow or kneel.
Here in Pennsylvania near Philadelphia is the old Eastern State Penitentiary built originally in the late 1700's early 1800's and the doorways to the prison cells are low as are the ceilings to force the convicted to kneel in penance to seek forgiveness for their sinful acts of commiting a crime.
Great video that stone coffin would make a great place to sleep .Maybe GV should spend one night in it 😂
Haha John, maybe on our next paranormal video
Quite an opening thanks.
Thanks Sally ❤️
Fascinating with the age of these churches and graveyards that everything seems very well taken care of. Thank you for the tour.
Glad you enjoyed it
That 12th century church ruin is amazing and huge. Quite the cemetery. I wouldn't lie down in that stone coffin either.
Thanks you 💖
Interesting area and very beautiful. Loved seeing the church ruins and that stone coffin.
Thanks Don, the stone coffin is amazing to see up close

A very fascinating cemetery and beautiful old Chapel. Thanks Sue for another great video.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great to see you back home Sue..Love the really old Irish cemeteries 🍀🙂
Thanks Bailey, it's great to be back exploring Ireland
The tomb with the two heads carved into it and the beautiful design from the chest area to the bottom of the tomb for "Joanne and Anand' ( not sure about those names as you didn't show the inscription) is a very interesting tomb. I have never seen one like that although I watch many cemetery videos. It is lovely.
It bears a floriated cross and an inscription commemorating Joanes Colfer and Anne Lusgin, I did say it in the video, it is very beautiful, imagine what it looked like when new
What a beautiful place to live love the church and grave yard
Thanks Marie ❤️
OhMyGoodness!! Subscribed today to your channel (Jan 15,2024). Thanks for the awesome video. I do appreciate it. 🌻😊
You are so welcome!❤️
Hello Sue! Well done on the tour of this sacred ground. The craftsmanship of the tombstones, considering the tools they had to work with, just amazes. The serene setting is so peaceful there. Woderful.
Thank you kindly 🙏
When I first started following your YT channel, I was easily fascinated with the old graveyards and the use of the Celtic cross. Also, made it an easier choice to visit Ireland over other Euro destinations. The family history of both mine and my wife's also factored in to the decision to visit. Passed by and visited a few graveyards while we were there. Fascinating finds with this vid and thanks!
Thanks Sonny, I feel blessed with so much history here
Thanks for this one, Sue, I found it utterly fascinating. From the Medieval grave to the WONDERFUL brickwork of the church ruins. The wooden lintel is just amazing ! What a pity that it is open to the elements. All-in-all a great video.
Yes, I agree, that piece needs to be covered before it's lost forever
What a great old graveyard. Fabulous tour Sue!
Glad you enjoyed it toms ❤️💖
That stone coffin would make a nice garden planter, already got drainage hole😬. Fascinating, and a beautiful place
Haha, that's true, it definitely would making a good talking point
Great video 👍🏻
Thanks Joel ❤️
Hola Susan que bonito esta el cementerio con el cielo gris y melancólico del otoño. Este video a la altura a la que nos tienes acostumbrados felicidades y un gran abrazo 🤗🤗🤗👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you ❤️
To see something so historically old, in such remarkable condition, is truly mind blowing! I can imagine what life would have been like back when that stone coffin was carved out. Hard!! Thank you for an awesome adventure Sue. Take care. Deb of Oz. XXX
Thanks so much Deb, slowly getting back into what I love ❤️
Always fascinating and well done! What an incredible place! You are looking well. God bless.
Thank you kindly 🙏
Beautiful place ! That stone coffin is hard to imagine as being used in a real funeral.. it looks so heavy and uncomfortable. Thank you for an interesting piece of history Sue !
I certainly wouldn't fancy resting in that coffin
Finally I got to watch your video sue,as usual top number take care ,safe travels, god bless you all,and nite from ballarat in Oz,👋👋😴😴🙏🇦🇺

These are the places I live for. This place old and new was mesmerizing. I loved it Sue. Just a heads up, my TH-cam app deleted all of the videos I had yet to watch and I can't get anything back. So it may be a while before I get it straightened out. I don't want to lose all my saved videos so I am still working on a work around so I don't lose everything. Best wishes, Janet♥️🙏🇮🇪

Have subscribed to your channel as I love all the old cemeteries you visit . Would have loved to visit your island and all the beautiful churches. Use to roam the old cemetery in England near my grandmother,'s home. To find the oldest grave I could find. You bring me back some good memories. Thank you so very much
Thanks so much Valerie, appreciate it so much 💖
Hi Sue, just found your channel, absolutely amazing. Really interesting, love the old Churches full of history. Best wishes from North Wales 🏴. I’ve subscribed. ❤️🐾
Thanks so much and welcome aboard, we were in Wales, we visited Raglan Castle, stunning place. I always feel Wales and Ireland have similar scenery

Hello Sue , that was brilliant so interesting , I noticed quite a few of the graves had blue surrounds something I have not seen before . I looked up the Saltee Island that would a great day trip I had heard of them before maybe you will be doing trip :) Thanks Sue great video.

Very interesting 👍👍👍

If stone walls could talk I would listen to all the tales if I lived that long😊😊
Can you imagine the hustle and bustle of life in medieval Ireland
Thanks for the tour Sue ... I cant imagine out in the middle of nowhere that they found enough rocks to build such an amazing church
Pretty amazing for sure
@@SerenitySueGraveyards if the ground is that rocky digging graves must be a chore
Even though I haven't visited this cemetery i feel such peace 🕊️ about this place sue you really keep finding amazing and beautiful part's Of Ireland 🍀🍀✌️✌️ very sad some people went to soon my GF PASSED AWAY 2 YEARS AGO only 38 Trudy was a beautiful lady 🕯️🙏🍀🕊️ cheers Stephen 🍀🍀✌️👍
I'm so sorry to hear that Stephen, she was so young 💔

So absolutely breathtaking. I so love how you will read the ones you can pay so much respect to all. Thanx for your time and tours. Love you and I pray you have a fabulous New Year. The world is spinning out of control so look over your shoulder...lol😅
You are so welcome, oh I will, happy new year
A mixture of old and new.
Love they do that, makes for a very pretty cemetery
I was right here, I’d already 👍…. And then….people. 🫤
Thank you, Sue. What amazing stories you bring us! I’d love to write down what that memorial said.
You know, our family name was not what it was. The person writing down names as my ancestors came over the pond to Canada and then US, spelled what he thought he’d heard. Voila! He birthed a new last name. 😂
Thank you, this was very intriguing and historic!! ❤❤✌🏼💜 FOURTEENTH Century!!!! 💚
That's so interesting, my name changed too, half my family are Farrells, the rest of us are O' Farrells lol
What a beautiful old place.
It sure is and right by the coast too
@@SerenitySueGraveyards I've been missing live shows because my husband is going through chemo.

Hi Gayle, I've videos in cobh and in topperary too, lovely places
We just cannot have places to explore that are as old as that.🇺🇸
We are blessed, very lucky to have such history throughout Ireland
Beautiful old church and graveyard. The older tombs and mausoleums are fascinating. That 12th century stone coffin ⚰️ with the hole in the middle is supercool!
Would a coffin of this nature, be reserved for a knight, or another prominent person?
Awesome video, thank you very much Sue and GV. Have a great weekend. 😊
Local legend say it was Strongbows coffin but Ireland is so full of local legends and Folklore we can't say for sure who it was for
Thank you very much for getting back to me Sue. I can understand that. But it makes me wonder 🤔 if that is Strongbows coffin ⚰️ what became of his remains? Thank you very much again Sue, take care.
Beautiful graveyard 🪦 Sue
I am hear static in your video this usually means some one is trying to communicate with you
I know this as I am extremely sensitive and connected to my spirits and Guardian Angels
Ireland is definitely on my to go visit list
God Bless 😇
Yes, I noticed that static noise, I did wonder what it was
Hi Sue, The McCroy grave marker may have been erected at a later time as money became available. Maybe at the time of death, the family was able to pay for a proper burial but not a marker or the original marker was replaced with the one you saw when the second name was added.
That's true, never thought of that
Such an awesome place❤️ Wish the church was still there. I wonder where the body is for the coffin with the drain hole? Was going to say you should have gotten in but I Don t think I would have either.🎃☠️🎃❤️
I would have but I'd needed a crane to lift me back out again, that's a tight squeeze lol I'd say long long gone by now they probably found it while digging graves
Sorry i missed the live chat. I was gonna watch it earlier and i think i got side tracked
That's OK Lauren, you're here now
@19:00 Did that represent that two people were interred in the same spot? What an interesting graveyard!!
Yes sometimes it did
The stone casket with the hole, I should imagine would of been laid in place and the body wrapped in shrouds and placed in , hence the hole for fluids. Personally I think this is a better idea than mausoleums. Grim and morbid maybe but genius for it’s time.
Absolutely genius, 💯
Ha ha. We were there in July. It was neat!
No way, did you lay in the coffin??
Ha ha, not I didn't. I would be afraid that I would get stuck! My wife could have done it though. It was a neat place, and we got to see some cows as well! @@SerenitySueGraveyards
Haha, I'd fear getting stuck too lol oh yes our country side is full of cows and sheep too
Well yes, I am use to seeing cows. Not sheep as it is too hot for em here in Tampa! @@SerenitySueGraveyards
When you show the extremely old graves I think of how many years have passed by and the person being asleep under that stone waiting for God.
Yes and I always wonder, when they last had a visit or someone saying their name
@@SerenitySueGraveyardsYes. It's a great thing you do reading their names. God only knows when the last time was but that's ok. HE knows them.
Love your accent sue I'm Aussie lol
Hi, thanks so much ❤️
Something I was noticing. You can tell where the wind is coming from due to the tilt of the head stones, and then see the back pressure due to walls pushing the head stones in the opposite direction, because of the wall reflecting winds and back pressure. Neat! But it could just be the camera perspective. A cheap Level against the head stones would show if I'm correct. Great video. BTW do you have FreeMasons there? @4:12 it makes me think of that on the head stone
The reason the Entrance way is low is you are suppose to Bow you head entering a house of God to show respect to the lord. This is well documented, They forced you to by doing this. It's why we Bow to lords of a Kingdom today
Ahh OK, I've never heard of that before, good to know and when I see this again I'll say exactly that, thank you
Yes we have found some, I've also found pyramid mausoleums and people have said it's free masons
The thought of Little John comes to mind, Rumored a Giant of 7'+ would have to crawled to go in. And we know their were those afflicted that grew to abnormal sized. back then. Makes me think this why this stopped, You got a giant fighting for you in a war that could step on you like a bug and you are making him Bow would be a insult or he scared the poop out of you! Just thinking out loud. If a giant was within 4' of you he could kill you before your guards even know what is happening.
Very interesting
Thanks
I think the McCroy stone was built by a family member either as a replacement stone or was placed later because there was no stone on the plot at the time
Yes, more than likely
I wonder if they had man & wife on their sides , facing each other , in order to both fit in it? Or was one person super skinny?😮. I’m surprised as to how the. The church is in very good condition, for its age. Ty for another great tour. Tc and stay safe always.
Interesting, I did wonder how they'd fit 2 in there, it would be a very tight squeeze
Omg im all aches and pains now imagine being 140
Haha Hazel, I'm The same here 😅
Holes weren't bore into the concrete to drain fluids, they were placed so the person's soul could escape their bodies, have a way out. Beliefs were odd.
I'm sure the fluids drained too, I kind of like the old traditions, it sounds lovely
6:43 Since the structure is hollow and has a small window, I wonder if it was an anchorite cell. The church is the right age to have had one.
Oh you know I found one of those a few videos ago..this may have been one too but I didn't see it on research when looking this place up
@@SerenitySueGraveyards It could just be unrecorded. Not every anchorhold or anchorite made it into public record.
Or it's a blocked off entrance like you said. By looking at the brickwork, you can see what was there before: a high, wide arch. To me, that says, "public entrance" not "hermit cell."
12th century amazing❤
It sure is
Buried on top of perhaps re: Mc croy marker.
Very likely
They actually buried people in the floor in them medieval churches I may be wrong but i do not think they embalmed🤔🙄🤢😲😳🪰🪰🪰 in them days either CAN YOU IMAGINE THE FOUL STENCH wow
You're right, definitely no embalming, it must have been horrid but then again, in medieval times they had no sanitation at all, toilets, showers, I bet the living smelled as bad 😉
My cottage is like that most people got to bend going through my doors and upstairs if they dont then they bang their heads, and i shouldn't laugh when they do but i cant help it
I love those cottages, so beautiful and sweet, as for knocking their heads, we'll they need to remember to duck
If dates of death aren’t listed, they may be lost in a disaster or, as you say, buried elsewhere. Is there a list of a disaster’s lost souls?
I'm not sure to be honest
There was a man in England near the 1400’s was ho did live to 140. His age was proven by the lives of the four kings he lived through,
Wow, so it could very well be true then. How fantastic 😀
The part at the back of the church that looks like an old doorway, looks like it was part of an older part orlf a church, possibly? Wouldn't be an expert on all that, just the stone work looks like an older style of stonework than the rest of the church
I think you're correct there Donall
@@SerenitySueGraveyards maybe:) nice spot
