- John Murphy was an Irish Roman Catholic priest of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Ferns, who is mainly remembered for his central role in the Irish Rebellion of 1798 in County Wexford,
Eluding the crown forces by passing through the Scullogue Gap, Fr John Murphy and other leaders tried to spread the rebellion across the country by marching into Kilkenny and towards the midlands. On 26 June 1798 at the Battle of Kilcumney Hill in County Carlow, their forces were tricked and defeated. Murphy and his bodyguard, James Gallagher, became separated from the main surviving group (fragments of which fought for six more years from the Killoughrim woods near Enniscorthy (James Corcoran) and from Wicklow mountains). Murphy decided to head for the safety of a friend's house in Tullow, County Carlow, when the path cleared. They were sheltered by friends and strangers - one Protestant woman, asked by searching yeomen if any strangers had passed, answered "No strangers passed here today"; when she was later questioned about why she had not said Murphy and Gallagher had not passed, she explained that they had not - because they were still in her house when she was questioned. After a few days, some yeomen captured Murphy and Gallagher in a farmyard on 2 July 1798. They were brought to Tullow later that day where they were brought before a military tribunal, charged with committing treason against the British crown, and sentenced to death. Both men were tortured in an attempt to extract more information from them. Fr Murphy was stripped, flogged, hanged, decapitated, his corpse burnt in a barrel of tar and his head impaled on a spike. This final gesture was meant to be a warning to all others who fought against the British Crown.

Diarmait Mac Murchada anglicised as Dermot MacMurrough, Dermod MacMurrough, or Dermot MacMorrogh (c. 1110 - c. 1 May 1171), was a King of Leinster in Ireland. In 1167, he was deposed by the High King of Ireland, Ruaidrí Ua Conchobair (Rory O'Connor). The grounds for the deposition were that Mac Murchada had, in 1152, abducted Derbforgaill, the wife of the king of Breifne, Tiernan O'Rourke (Irish: Tighearnán Ua Ruairc). To recover his kingdom, Mac Murchada solicited help from King Henry II of England. His issue unresolved, he gained the military support of the 2nd Earl of Pembroke (Richard de Clare, nicknamed "Strongbow"). At that time, Strongbow was in opposition to Henry II due to his support for Stephen, King of England against Henry's mother in the Anarchy. In exchange for his aid, Strongbow was promised in marriage to Mac Murchada's daughter Aoife with the right to succeed to the Kingship of Leinster. Henry II then mounted a larger second invasion in 1171 to ensure his control over Strongbow, resulting in the Norman Lordship of Ireland. Mac Murchada was later known as Diarmait na nGall (Irish for "Diarmait of the Foreigners"). He was seen in Irish history as the king that invited the first-ever wave of English settlers, who were planted by the Norman conquest. The invasion had a great deal of impact on Irish Christianity, increasing the de facto ability of the Holy See to regulate Christianity in Ireland.
Early life and family
Diarmait was born around 1110, a son of Donnchadh mac Murchada, King of Leinster and Dublin. His father's paternal grandmother, Derbforgaill, was a daughter of Donnchad, King of Munster and thus a granddaughter of Brian Boru.In 1115 his father attacked Domnall Gerrlámhach, King of Dublin, but died in the ensuing battle. The citizens of Dublin buried him with the carcass of a dog, considered to be a huge insult.He had two wives (as allowed under the Brehon laws), the first of whom, Sadhbh Ní Faeláin, was mother of a daughter named Órlaith who married Domnall Mór, King of Munster. His second wife, Mór ingen Muirchertaig, was mother of Aoife / Eva of Leinster and his youngest son Conchobar Mac Murchada. He also had two other sons, Domhnall Caomhánach mac Murchada and Énna Cennselach mac Murchada (blinded 1169). Diarmait is buried in the Cathedral graveyard of Ferns village.
King of Leinster
After the death of his older brother, Énna Mac Murchada, Diarmait unexpectedly became King of Leinster. This was opposed by the then High King of Ireland, Toirdelbach Ua Conchobair (Turlough O'Conor) who feared (rightly) that Mac Murchada would become a rival. Toirdelbach sent one of his allied kings, Tigernán Ua Ruairc (Tiernan O'Rourke) to conquer Leinster and oust the young Mac Murchada. Ua Ruairc went on a brutal campaign slaughtering the livestock of Leinster and thereby trying to starve the province's residents. Mac Murchada was ousted from his throne, but was able to regain it with the help of the Leinster clans in 1132. Afterwards followed two decades of uneasy peace between Ua Conchobair and Diarmait. In 1152 he even assisted the High King to raid the land of Ua Ruairc who had by then become a renegade.

Wow, this video is interesting. A tombstone with holes, a 1701 tombstone, the work of J Byrnes, the leader of the 1798 rebellion, the king who brought the Brits into Ireland (I find it ironic both the king who brought them here, and the priest that tried to get them out would both be buried in the same cemetery), a peek inside that beautiful church, and the effigy of a bishop who died in 632 AD. What a lovely old cemetery
The holes in the gravestones were used to stake the stone along with an iron bolt into the ground to hold it into place to stop the gravestone from moving until the ground had settled the holes were lined with lead in order to prevent the cracking of the stone once the iron bolt had rusted

The two holes in Katherine Murphy’s headstone are there to prevent the headstone from falling over in strong winds.
This was a common practise a long time ago especially in areas where winds and rain are common

I used to tend bar at the Knights of Columbus. Periodically the bartender was permitted to just up and place a free drink in front of everyone at the bar. When a surprised patron asked who bought that round the standard reply was a mythical "Father Murphy".

the circles on the headstones mean eternity .
also they thought in the 1700s because of the cold winters with the headstones freezing and cracking that supposedly it was a way I like the to stop it from cracking and freezing . I personally like the first explanation for eternal life in Christ.

My son and I were checking out a very old cemetery here in mystic Connecticut. 1 Stone in particular was a man who died in 1710 at the age of 98. If you do the math it's not too far off from the 14th century. (1500's).

Hey Sue, I wanted to add one more thing about the holes in the headstones they were used to keep them upright. Someone wrote and article about it. If you Google "Bicker Curiosities - Holey gravestones!" they explain the holes. A quote "after the stone was carefully erected, a stout wooden stake was driven into the ground behind the headstone and a bolt was passed through the wood and the hole in the stone to fix them together. The stake was designed to keep the stone upright until the ground had properly settled around it. In order that the rusting of the iron bolt didn’t cause it to expand and crack the gravestone the hole was lined with lead."

Sue, thank you for sharing that bit of Irish history. I had heard of the 1798 Rebellion, but not who led it. He truly deserved sainthood for what he suffered.
Lots of leaders in different areas, bagel Harvey was another hung drawn and quartered

Very interesting, although the desecration is often shocking. Some might argue that many don't deserve respect as they oppressed the poor but I think that we are all equal in death.
I'm just glad that you bring neglect into the light which results in many repairs and renovations.
