- The Azaleas and rhododendrons are in full flower in my late April English garden 2020. I have the beautifully scented deciduous azaleas and a number of evergreen Azaleas
The days and days of warm sunshine this April have brought the shrubs into flower earlier than usual.

My Mom had the most amazing garden...girl from Brooklyn....the Azaelas started out teeny and were over6 feet forty years later....thank you for the audio of the birds to complement your garden, Mom would have enjoyed your video.

I have watched this so many times - it's probably my favourite of all your videos. Now in November 2022, you'll know how many Azaleas I've bought, the trials and triumphs, but still don't have a glorious display like yours! I’m quite excited by last year’s plantings and the three new ones I’ve just put in the pathway hydrangea bed. I feel that I’ve ‘finished’ that bed now. (Famous last words!). Hopefully it will ‘look’ lined with azaleas - if not, I’ll get another one or two lol

Paul T's World do you make your own compost for them? Do you have a recipe for it?
@@martiknapp762 I do have two large compost bins which produce "normal" compost (which is on the acidic side) - that I add in, but with the azaleas I buy ericaceous compost from the garden centre and maybe add some leaf mould that I make, which helps retain moisture. But I actually feel they're not too fussy as long as it's on the acid side. Hope that helps.

The azaleas in pots are all evergreen azaleas - unfortunately I don’t know the exact variety as the Mother plant was a gift from many years ago.
Breath taking beautiful. Yoh should of replanted it the terracotta pot qnd once it was in its hole break the pot and cover it I did it to mine and had no damage or root damage .

Hello Diane, yes - they both grow well in pots. I have these evergreen in pots and my Dad has two large deciduous ones in pots. The root system is quite small so they’re perfect for pots.
Beautiful. I love gardens, but I have the problem of not liking to garden because its so much work... however if I just maintain it, I think the work load would be much less work.
I understand what you mean. However if you could get the low/no maintenance shrubs like azaleas. All I do with azaleas is water them when they are dry - that's all I do. Or maybe rhododendrons - you don't even have to prune them. There are many shrubs like that which might suit you.
My tiny little indoor Azalea plant flowers profusely all year round with more blooms each year but sadly hasnt noticeably grown in 3 years. I havent fertilized it at all yet as there hasnt been much time to do so inbetween lowering
That’s incredible that it flowers year round - didn’t expect it to do that - even indoors.
I suppose when you do get a chance, and you want it to grow bigger then you’ll want to repot into a slightly bigger pot and use ericaceous compost and mix in some azalea slow release food. That should get it going!
As you know - azaleas don’t like to be dry so good regular watering but as it has flowered so much it looks as though you know exactly what you’re doing 👍

Azaleas and Rhododendron is beautiful. Thanks for sharing sir. When is the right time to feed Azaleas and Rhododendron?
They don’t need a lot of food but a slow release fertiliser in early Spring would be good. Best to use ericaceous food, which is often labeled ‘azalea’ food. Water well, particularly in August and September when they are developing the buds for next year’s flowers. Hope that helps you.

Your azalea collection is marvellous!! How do you even get them to look so cloud-like and puffy.. mine always seem to grow gamgly and spindky without much bushiness at the base and just a bit at the tops 🤷♂️ i guess they need more sun.. do your's grow in full sun?
Thank you. Many of my azaleas are in full sun but they are a woodland plant so can tolerate some shade. They like ericaceous soil - I don't give them much fertiliser and some of them not at all. Perhaps give your plants some fresh ericaceous compost in the Spring - try putting one in a pot and see how it does.

Hi, I'm sorry I don't know as it was in the garden when I moved here. It is an evergreen azalea of course - wish I knew the actual variety.
Lovely display of some healthy shrubs . I have a rhododendron that has threatened to bloom over the last two seasons , but has never flowered . It is planted in the same area where an azaleas now in full bloom . Have you any ideas where I am going wrong .
The buds seem mist and green , the leaves are nice and healthy but no flowering . Thanks in advance .
That’s a tough one - rhododendron not blooming. Just a couple of suggestions:
Is it overfed? Does it have enough water over later Summer & Autumn for it to set its buds? Mine sulk if they are dry.
I’ll just add - mine do have good years followed by not so good - almost as if they take a year off every other year.

@@ringsidejudge4302 I doubt it’s planted too deep but it might not get enough sun.
Have you done a video on pruning azaleas?
I haven’t. I don’t usually prune the azaleas but if you want to trim back to keep the shape you want - best time just after flowering. You can cut back quite severely and they’ll grow back no problem.
I have a question please: I have a rhododendron. It's been in a pot for years. I finally planted it last month but I didn't use the compost you recommend. I've decided I want to move it. Would it be ok to do so? It's in flower at the moment (white flowers). The new position will get plenty of sun but I could plant it in a more shaded area if necessary. Your garden is amazing. I can see the thousand of hours you must have invested in it.
Yes, you can move it - unless urgent maybe enjoy the flowers first. Dig up the whole root ball - shouldn’t be too big and plant it with plenty of ericaceous compost.
I’d put it in the more shaded area - it’s a woodland plant so doesn’t need or want much sun. Water it well and make sure it doesn’t dry out. It will form next years buds in August/September so plenty of water then as well. Ideally rain water rather than tap water. If you only have tap water then leave the water to stand for a couple of days so the chlorine etc evaporates.

I bought them small and let them grow in the pot. They soon develop into nice looking plants. Sorry, I don’t know the exact name of them but they are evergreen azaleas.
@@paultsworld so it isn't a knaphill or Mollis? Are those two too big for a pot? I've found an amazing 50 cm pot and a beautiful young knaphill hoping to achieve the same as you with you're pot azaleas but doubting if it's the good combination.. hope you can give advice.
Sounds as though the knaphill & Mollis are deciduous azaleas. The deciduous ones usually have a really nice scent and vivid colours.
I would say - go for it in that pot. Ercicaceous compost & ‘azalea’ food - plus rainwater rather than tap water.
They don’t like to get too dry.
If after a few years it starts to get too big maybe then plant in the ground.

Hi Paul, I plan to plant Rhododendrons and azalea in my yard and 1 location got only 3-4 hours of sun and second location is about 6 hours of sun, are they going to survive or thrive ? Or I should not plan them at all?
Hi, that’s a good question! They are woodland plants - that means they are OK with a fair bit of shade as they are used to being near trees.
Depends on how hot your Summers are - if they are very hot put them in the “4 hour place” otherwise the 6 hours of sun.
I would say Rhododendrons are happiest in the most shade; so how about spreading the risk and put a Rhododendron in the shadiest place and an azalea in a slightly sunnier place.

Any tips on how I can grow Azaleas in pot they seem do OK for a couple of years and then die from root rot.
It sounds as though they are too wet - is that a possibility?
Perhaps the soil is too rich and holds the water a bit too much? Is the pot on a tray which holds the water? Is the pot firmly on the ground stopping good drainage?
Are any of those a possibility?
This is my dream graden, but my soil is slightly alkaline even though I only use rain water. Do you know your soil pH in the area where you use rain water only? Thank you
I haven’t done any pH tests but I would think it’s just slightly acidic. I do use ericaceous compost and feed when planting any acid loving plants. Manures and homemade garden compost are slightly acidic, as is pine bark and leaf mould - so mulching with any of those would help. There is folia feed for acid loving plants and applying sequested iron is a good idea.
If you do all that after planting using ericaceous compost you will be fine. Of course anything in a pot would be totally controlled and acidic.
Good luck - these ‘woodland’ plants are actually not that fussy so I’m sure you will succeed in creating your dream look.
Sandy soil is probably the key to successfully growing acid-loving plants. I'm on clay. I use foliar and granular feed for ericaceous plants, but I try to avoid peat or ericaceous compost due to the Irish peat bog degradation problem. Our peat bogs are drained unsustainably, which results in destruction of natural habitats of rare birds, insects and other earthlings. In addition to that peat extraction releases tons of CO2 into the atmosphere annually, exacerbating global warming. And when I think that it takes a hundred years for a peatbog to regenerate and only a minute to excavate it, it makes me feel sick. I love to garden for wildlife, both on the surface and underneath it,
@@ugtitto2654 not all ericaceous compost is peat based, why not use a peat free one like Sylviagrow?
Perhaps a good idea would be to apply Vitax 6x fertiliser - it’s good for all plants including ericaceous plants and will improve clay soil - always better to feed the soil rather than the plants where possible.
How do you care for azaleas in winter if frost
We have mild Winters here - however 10 years ago the temperatures got down to -14c (7f). All the azaleas were OK.
I think there are some ‘indoor’ azaleas but all mine are fine even when it’s frosty so I don’t have to do any special care for them. Two of mine died this Summer because they got too dry - they do like plenty of water in the Summer.

That's a really good question. Azaleas are part of the rhododendron family. Rhododendrons tend to be bigger, always evergreen and have large thick leaves with the flowers in a large cluster. Azaleas have smaller flowers, can be evergreen and deciduous and have between 1 and 3 little flowers at the end of each stem. I would usually put a rhododendron towards the back of a border and azalea at the front because they are 'prettier.

They are spectacular aren't they! I am sorry I don't know the name of the cultivar - however all the deciduous azaleas have stunning colours.

That's a good point. The deciduous azaleas produce really nice Autumn colours. The evergreen azaleas just have their green leaves - however some of them also produce colourful red leaves in Autumn which turn back to green in the Spring.

Our azaleas and rhododendrons do not like our soil and many have died and four have been dug out and planted in pots to avoid this problem.
The soil in London has too much clay and even if I were to use ericaceous compost, I still have this problem.
Did you dig out the whole area in your garden and replace the soil with ericaceous compost?
I have used ericaceous compost and added sulphur, iron sulphate, magnesium sulphate into the ground but still very few ericaceous plants like our London soil.

My soil is naturally slightly acidic so I only need to use ericaceous compost and food to help the natural acidity. It is difficult to turn soil from one to the other so probably best to have the ericaceous plants in pots where they thrive.
My hydrangeas don't turn very blue - that is why I think my soil is only slightly acidic. They are often part blue, part pink - except in a couple of places where they have gone pink (which is surprised me.)
