My English Garden is near the coast in North-West England, 1/3 of an acre (including the house) Zone 9a with sandy soil.

Paul- so happy to see you back. You're one of my favorite folks and I was quite worried about you! Sorry to hear you're having trouble with your foot. Your garden looks glorious as always. I just love your azaleas and clematis. I used to live in a 7b (8 micro) climate, until I moved to an apartment in Alaska 15 years ago. I miss being able to garden, so I live vicariously through you. I am always thrilled with the true joy on your face of the successful fruition of your trial and error. I remember all too well what that was like... especially when you've nurtured something through a cold snap like your tropical garden and it's just wait and see. I very much am in agreement with your approach to things. I also had a little pond for my birdies and animals and fish. It's such a lovely thing to be in harmony with nature and create a bit of heaven in your home. I love your bird videos, they're very sweet. Thank you so very much for taking the time to share.

Loved your idea of planting a clematis to climb and disguise a dead tree. That will definitely solve a huge problem I have in my yard.
It has worked - I’ve got a honeysuckle mixed in which hopefully will start flowering later in the Summer.

I love your stoicism regarding the cold wet and windy spring we've had! It has slowed the usual growth rate. But, you're right, the plants keep growing!

Magnificent as ever! That Avalanche - Wow! So glad you're back and take care of your foot. Here in Virginia we are hitting that moment when Spring is trying to leap into summer a couple of days at a time (high 80s to 90😮 and then back to 70s, 60s.) I do think I'm past the pesky frosts now 🤞 though. 💚
Normally we’re past the frosts but some of the countryside has dipped to just on freezing some nights. High 90s - wow! We’d struggle in Summer to attain those dizzy heights 😀

Glad to see you back. Hope the trouble with your foot wasn't too serious. Here in northern France we have had the worst spring time ever: rain pouring down, floods and strong winds; a real feast for those who like it. I didn't as we have lost a lot of time in the garden. So don't worry if you didn't take so much care of your garden because if your weather conditions were as poor as ours, you have not lost much time.
We’ve both probably suffered the same ‘low’ weather systems and weird jet stream patterns.

Our nighttime temperatures have been a bit low for these plants, I have a few cuttings that were outside but I've now put them in the porch - surely warm night times are on the way.
It is lovely to see the hostas like this before the slugs find them!

Good to have you back Paul. Your garden is looking wonderful. The Azaleas and Rhododendrons have liked all the rain we've been having. Your Avalanche is stunning again. I lost mine as I planted it in the ground last year but it's hated the continual rain. In fact most of my garden has resembled a paddy field for weeks on end. Hope your foot is on the mend as we take them for granted and it's only when they go wrong that we realise how much we use them. I broke a bone in one of mine back in the 1970's. Fell off my platform shoes!
Thank you Wendy, sorry you lost your 'Avalanche' - I wonder if it is really a small clematis and is more happy in a pot? No paddy fields for me on this sandy soil - would you believe it's bone dry right now - a nightmare for watering.
You are right - when I couldn't walk for a number of days I was actually shocked that it meant I couldn't even do any gardening! I'm trying to imagine those 70s platform shoes ;-)))

It is really good to see you back , Paul. I hope the foot is ok! Your garden can manage for a while without you. You have an amazing collection of azaleas. My mostly perennial borders really haven’t done well without that tlc during the winter and early spring. The lawns are wet and mossy. Everything needs attention that I can ‘t give at present. But nature makes everything grow again without me. Best wishes.Evie.
Thank you Evie. I was going to have a go at scarifying the lawn and giving it a moss treatment but I’ve had to put that on hold for a little while. Foot doing well though!
I love "red robin fortilia"!l didnt know she needed a "hair cut"when she is changing colours!
You must try it and see how well it 'works' - all the new leaves are first red and pruning back stimulates new leaves. Just my kind of shrub!

Mine's a hole; storms, why life??(!) and now building repairs. Love photinias have 6. PS A local c. Montana grows up a telegraph pole and along the cable across the garden.

Hi Paul, welcome back. Garden looks glorious, some fantastic colours. Love clematis. My brugmansia cuttings in the potting shed were completely frozen a few times. I lost my nerve and took them indoors. I’m pleased to say they all survived:)

I really enjoyed this video, Paul and I'm glad your foot has healed. The shrub that is creating a thicket looks like it could be a type of summac. They make large thickets here in the US.
Glad you enjoyed the garden Joanne. I agree - it does very much look like a type of summac with similar characteristics - I have done some research and found that it is Sorbaria sorbifolia ‘Sem' - maybe a summac relative.

Welcome back. it is good to see you and your garden. The garden is looking magnificent. The Avalanche clematis does not seem to mind the pot. It looks amazing. Severe Spring envy, Paul. We turned cold these last 2 weeks... of course! I have been looking at all the daffodils and tulips in the northern sphere and don't newly leafed hostas welcome the new season with their beautiful foliage. I have a new appreciation for brunneras at the moment, yours are flowering really well and so tall. I am going to put some more in new Spring. Hope your foot is ok and has healed.... so you can film again ! 😄
Thank you Margaret. I’m liking hostas more and more - their fast growing new shoots early on is seeing the garden grow in front of your eyes.
I’m relatively new to brunnera and think they’re perfect for ‘difficult’ places.

I saw a garden on youtube that had a whole bank of self seeded brunnera, but I am not that lucky. I have had a few for 10 years and they have only produced two tiny little plants. Very expensive at the nursery if you need a mass planting. Maybe we are too dry and hey, we are not known for our fertile soils!! In reverse the hostas were looking lovely then overnight they are yellow and flat. All is not bad in Autumn, I am doing heaps of work ready for the delayed gratification of Spring. Division time! Hope to see your Spring and Summer garden soon. Please take us along on any propagation adventures that you take on.

How nice to see you and your garden again! Even without your usual fastidious plant grooming, your garden looks lovely, the azaleas in particular. I have one deep pink deciduous one and the fragrance perfumes my entire back yard. I would love to have many more as you do. Your clematis Montana has always been a favorite of mine; so pretty. Thank you, the foot is improving. Yes, a wet Spring is nice for the plants. The robin is OK and enjoying life with his partner.
We have so much in common. Toms day job is like yours. We have hydregneaa and we have the azaleas. We have the red tip too.

I love your garden, Paul as it is so colourful and very balanced. It looks perfect even if you have been away. What is the name of the large cream, variegated bush that you called, 'Forest Flame'? I would like to get one for its stunning foliage. Thank you for the tour.
Thank you - glad you like the garden.
That shrub is a pieris 'forest flame'. It has lovely red leaves in early Spring and then strings of white bells. It is a forest plant and needs ericaceous soil or compost. It usually prefers a shady spot but I have mine in the sun so the leaves bleach to that cream colour. If your soil isn't suitable then it does well in a pot and likes plenty of water.

Hello Paul, thanks for the quick overview of the garden, the hydrangea cuttings are simply wonderful, I liked the clematis, each beautiful in its own way. Brugmansia is very interesting, I managed to get a cutting, I planted it in a pot while I keep it in a room at home under a phyto-lamp, I plan to plant it too. put it in a pot and put it outside. Paul, how is your pond doing? Are the aquatic plants already waking up?
Good luck with your brugmansia - good idea to keep it warm till the weather warms up. The pond is OK but I haven't been able to maintain it - the plants and wildlife will be OK and some of the plants, like marsh marigolds, have flowered

Welcome back Paul I think you’ve been missed quite a bit. I took some hydrangea cuttings last year and they’re doing great. Only trouble is I can’t remember which plant I took them from. 🤣🤣. How long do I need to leave them in pots, do you know?
Thank you! Nice to hear your cuttings are doing well. I usually pot them into a 9cm pot, followed by the next size up - once the roots are showing through the bottom of that pot then they can be put out. I wonder if they'll put on a flower or two this year so you can identify them?
hi paul do bluebells self seed or bulb expansion...ive a small plot wud look great with a woodland bluebell look
Actually they do both - self seed and offset from the main bulb.
I really enjoyed that tour, the hostas are untouched by snails, how do you manage that?
Some of the flower beds are OK, but others have a lot of snails - eventually the snails will find all the hostas so I have to enjoy them early in the season.
