    Thanks for the road trip to Waterford Rachel. Some of their Rhodos were to die for. I didn't know about the stamen count to differentiate Azaleas from Rhodos, how interesting! I can't unfortunately grow successfully Azaleas in the ground here so I finally opted for keeping one in a pot. They are so beautiful I wanted to enjoy them.

    How I wish I had a picture to share with you of my Dad's topiary garden. The azaleas were large balls set in front of a hedgerow with 2 kingstone shapes- one to either side. The rhodo adorned his garden with violet blooms. Thankfully it was left to spread it's own wings. Thank you so very much for this video Rachel. Love & Blessings from NY shores.

      Your Dad's garden sounds amazing. It is impressive to see a lot of clipped azaleas in the Japanese style. I guess they are better than box balls in many ways because they also flower and are magnificent when they do so, Thanks for sharing, Jeri, and happy growing.

      It is sad when photos of amazing gardens, like your Dad's, don't survive. My Mum had a beautiful garden too with a grape vine on a pergola we used to eat under and it produced small grapes (unheard of outdoors in Ireland) but I have no photos. People just didn't have cameras as much then and it was costly to print photos so why waste it on a garden photo! Sad.

    • @jericohen120
      @jericohen120 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My Dad used the garden to express that he was Irish. From the 2 King Stones and hedgerow to the Rowan that he planted to honor my parents marriage to the Andromeda that honored the Manly branch of the Fitzgibbons he expressed his love for Ireland Irish tradition and who he was. That defined us. What he created for us was a private park which bloomed for10 months. Memories of what my Grandmother left behind.
      Your Mom's grape filled pergola sounds like an absolute delight. So true about photos then.

    Somehow the algorithm stop sending your videos to me. Tonight your wonderful video on rhododendron came up as usual when I watch a Videos I always learn something but usually quite a bit. Going back a good 15 years ago I was seeing a fellow who lived in Waterford And he arranged for the two of us to one to the garden one August afternoon. There we were just wee two and 40 or 50 work today. When I asked if there was a map the manager of the Garden said to me they were working on one. My friend said to me that’s Irish window there is no map and there is none in progress. It’s such a gorgeous garden and I will return one of these days and I would encourage anyone to go because their hydrangea collection is absolutely stupendous. I envy your climate even with the rain and I’m now very sorry in life I did not stay and make a life there. Having lived for and Ireland and United States I can thoroughly kill you Ireland would’ve been my choice. Thank you again for all of your wonderful plant videos I’m glad I have become many planted with you.

    Great video thank you. Fortunately I have several Rhodos in my garden, on acid clay soil. I like how different Rhodis flower at different times, as one goes over another takes its place, albeit just for a few weeks in Spring to early Summer. Yesterday as I was deadheading a Rhodo I spotted the dreaded scale insect, which has spread to other evergreen shrubs in my garden. Out with the Neem Oil to get rid of the pests.

    Ah, Rhodos, no growing the typical varieties here. I remember seeing the absolutely massive ones that grow in the Pacific Northwest, I can't remember what park I was in while in Seattle but the Rhodos had to be 20 feet (6 meters) high and half as wide and just awash with blooms, like a giant curtain of blossoms.
    I would like to try my hand at the Vireya group but there is only one supplier I can find and they are in Hawaii. So, I can get them, I don't know that I want to pay $40 to ship two small plants. (and they are some kind of backwards supplier that requires you to mail a check or money order. In 2021 they don't take digital payment. 🤦‍♂️)

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are talking my language here, Michael. I've been drooling over the vireya group for years. I mean, who can resist an epiphytic rhodo, right! And the ones I've seen bloom in the greenhouse of the Botanic Gardens (photos used in video) were glorious and scented. But I am trying to steer away from big plants so don't get me going again.
      There is one nursery near here, like your Hawaiian one, who accepts only cash or cheque. It is hard to imagine in this day and age!

    Help iv a small white rhodedendrom I bought it at a garden center it was in the reduced it wasn't dead but the leaves are very tiny and it had lots and lots of little buds on and it was /is brown in colour and quite dried looking and sparce I bought it for 50p and I bought it home and repotted it into a much larger pot with some good compost and some drip feed food and some water yet it's still brown and dry looking tho the leaves have not dropped off I don't know if it can but bought back to health and thrive any tips???

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Make sure not to repot more than one size bigger and to use ericacious compost. Overpotting will lead to incorrect watering and plant death. You can use a fertiliser with a 10-8-6 combination. If the rootball is very dried out, place it in a bucket of water to rehydrate. Remove any dead branches and keep your bush in a sheltered frost-free position. Insert your finger in the compost knuckle deep, when deciding whether or not to rewater, and if dry, water your plant. If it isn't too badly depleted, it will survive. Fingers crossed.
