    Rhododendrons and azaleas are acid-loving, shrubs with colorful flower clusters. They prefer damp climates and mild temperatures, but there are rhododendron plants and azalea bushes suitable for Zones 4-9. With thousands of varieties available, there's one to suit just about every garden.
    Zones:
    4-9; however, the most variety is available in Zones 5-8.
    Height/Spread: From 18 inches tall and wide to 20 feet tall; varies depending on species and cultivar.
    Bloom time: Peak bloom generally occurs in mid-spring; however, some azalea and rhododendron plants bloom as early as March and others as late as July. Reblooming varieties bloom in spring, then again in summer until frost.
    Flower color: Colorful flower clusters, known as trusses, come in many hues: pink, white, reddish-purple, deep crimson, blue, and yellow.
    Exposure: Plants do best in partial shade or dappled shade, especially those with large leaves. Tiny-leaved alpine and dwarf species are best in bright sun.
    Climate: The damp, mild climate of the Pacific Northwest is perfect for growing azaleas or rhododendrons; while growing in colder climes, especially the Northeast, can be a challenge.
    Rhododendron types: There are eight different types of rhododendrons to choose from-some are tall like trees, others are more bush-like; some are evergreen, and others are deciduous.

    Thank you for this video, I love Rhododendrons after a trip to Portland way back, but never had the nerve to get one. I do the same for my birthday and purchase a new plant and after this video I might decide to get and plant a Rhododendron. Thank you 🙏🏼🤞🏼🎉

    I love the contrast between the buds and the blooms. I think I saw a couple cool ones a while back at a produce stand that I really liked, one was pink with white edging. I don't remember if they were Rhodos or Azaleas but I like looking at the different hybrids. I love flowers with patterns and multiple colors/shades 😊.

    My friend/neighbour just threw two of these (purple Passion) into the garbage. When I told her that I DMT believe they are dead just really dried up and the flowers died off she told me I can take them.
    Now I have them soaking in a sink full of water tryin to hydrate them as they were dry as a bone lol .... But I'm not sure what to do after that point. Do I plant them in the ground or get better pots and soil??? . Pls help I absolutely love them !!

    I did not think you could plant an Rhododendron in a pot, I would love to try to do that to one here for my back deck. I have learn you can do Hydrangea and have put one in a pot in the yard off the garage where we set a lot with our pets. Sorry to here you are moving, hope you will still do Y.

    • @GardenObsessions
      @GardenObsessions  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would be preferable to be planted in the ground. If you do go in a container just remember to up size after about two years. Our style of gardening is container gardening but we will soon have a permanent home to put in the ground. Thanks so much for watching. 💚💚💚💚💚💚

    Very interesting 🧐 that you refer to your plant as “him”... I call my flowers “guys” 😁. I recently bought a rhododendron and it’s in a huge pot with Vinca vines and pineapple mint. I want to put it in the ground but not sure 🤔 where yet

    How is your rhodo doing? And how do you water it as I’ve heard to not use tap water as it’s not acidic water.

    • @GardenObsessions
      @GardenObsessions  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is doing great and ready to bloom this year. We water with regular tap water. The application of Holly tone really helps with the acidity it requires.

    Decided to repot my dendrons from soil to pots because they were getting absolutely destroyed by snails. Can keeping them in pots be a permanent solution? Or do they need to be planted outside sooner or later? Much love!

    Hi I have a rhododendron plant in a 40l pot. 3 or 4 years old. This spring the leafs are all drooped down. The plant is regularly watered and fertilised.
    Any idea what the problem could be? Thank you. I have an another rhododendron plant in the soil. The leafs on it are normal.

    • @GardenObsessions
      @GardenObsessions  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s a sign of very dry soil needing more water. Rhododendrons also get droopy if it’s really cold outside their leaves do a curling with droop to protect themselves from the freezing temperatures. 💚💚💚💚💚💚

    Does anyone else call them Azaleas or is it just in Australia they grow really well here in Sydney

    • @GardenObsessions
      @GardenObsessions  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello! All azaleas belong to the same family of the rhododendron. Rhododendrons are mostly bigger. They also have larger leaves and flower stamens of ten. The azalea only or usually have five. I sometimes call the azaleas rhododendron. I can imagine how beautiful they grow in Australia! Thank you for watching! 💐💚

    Why are you planting them in a pot? These plants live for years and living in a pot especially over the winter will diminish it bigger in a very short time. Just planted in the ground for crying out loud. There they can become what they really are meant to be big beautiful plants.
