Thanks a bunch for all your fantastic tutorials over the years like this one. You've contributed a great deal to the Blender community and I really appreciate it.
How can I createa a mask that does not paint directly on the model, but that it can be removed later instead?
i was just going crazy bc i was following old tutorials and couldn't find the texture slot option☠☠
facts! :D
THIS
@@wright_fh I just did that, no way!
Thanks so much for taking your time to make this for us Grant!
It's crazy, the one thing, I keep forgetting to do is create a new image texture, after adding it, everything works out fine.
You hear again, saw you at another Blender tutorial lol.
i "became disabled" recently (got bad legs) and have been really putting off doing anything with my time. i find instructions really hard to follow, typically. i have no idea, but something about you and your guides are amazing. im modelling and doing things ive always wanted to try. im excited to create again and expand my pracitce as an illustrator! cant stress how much it means to me finding joy like this right now. thanks man, from the bottom of my heart. 😎👍
I'm glad you are finding them helpful
I knew how to do texture painting before, just had to refresh my memory on it.
The new Blender version also looks a bit different, so it's good to see these topics being revisited time to time again.
Very nice and easy to understand, thanks.
thank you so much!! you saved me!!!!!
thank you so much I was looking all over for a tutorial like this
thank you I was looking everywhere for texture slot good thing it wasn't a snake
hello, i have a allen iverson nba 2k model, and i wanna switch his default textures with one i created. but idk how to apply the new one and align it properly
thankyou for this Tutorial
I’m still using my Indie copy of Maya 2024. While Blender has some purpose in a workflow, I have been using Maya for 20 years and am reluctant to change. Nice video though…
Cool it worked in Blender 4.
it won't let me texture. i followed the steps and it simply refuses to paint anything on the model, nor does it give an error message.
Check doubles and face direction
Fatastic video! Keep up the good work and thanks
What is your favorite addon for texture painting? ucupaint or something? Do you like the software ArmorPaint?
i haven't used any yet
Would you consider trying them out and doing a video on what you think of them? I appreciate your input on things.@@grabbitt
im putting texture on my mesh right but im having a problem where i can only paint certain parts can anyone help
See my latest video
Is there a video how you made the hammer?
I don't think I have that no
thank you for this
it doesnt let me paint my full model, instead it only paints one part of it. any ideas on how to fix it?
Have you unwrapped the whole model
Well I would group the model together, then I would select it all to unwrap it. And then when I would apply a texture it would just go to a random spot on the model instead of the whole thing
@@pipe-cfan7958 then you have to jump to different objects to paint. Alt q I think
so I'm creating a multiple dis-connected part model and whenever I make the UV map it only shows one item whenever I go to texture paint also requires me to make a new texture for every object. is there a way to color all parts without joining them?
Yes select them all and go into edit mode. Then unwrap
when I create the base color texture it paints my whole object without me pressing anything, Im a beginner to blender so I probably made a mistake. Can you help?
You may have the fill brush selected or your unwrap may have gone wrong
@@grabbitt is there a simple way to fix the unwrap or some settings I could play with to fix it?
Tried this lots of times, never can I draw in texture mode..... just doesnt paint, ever.
try the same process with just a cube
how do you eyedrop?
Shift x
why i can’t draw?😢
MUCHAS GRACIAS 😩🔥
I followed it step by step, and it is not painting any colors, could I maybe get a little help?
same here I add the texture, trying to paint and just nothing happens the color is not applying to the model. No error messages too.
@@Geeko-vd9ld same here
I had issues with my texture paint work not saving. I've since set the External Data to Automatically Pack Resources, and also made sure to save the texture image separately before saving the whole blender file, and also installed an add-on called "Auto Save Images". And I'm going to upgrade from 4.0.1 to 4.0.2 just in case that helps
Even following through this, I am still unable to draw on my object
Edit - I figured it out, Thank you so much for the tutorial
Hi, I'm having a problem where when I switch over to texture paint mode (2:04), the UV map doesn't transfer and the grid on the left is just blank. Any idea why this is happening? thanks!
I’m also having this problem
@@glacietheglaceon2422 After you create your material click on it on the right hand side of your screen and it should display on the left.
Using 4.1 but the paint isnt showing after i did the base colour :( i did it with a cube but still the same
Edit: I FOLLOWED IT PROPERLY THIS TIME IM MEANT TO DO THE SCALE THIBBG THEN SMART UV THINGY THANKS SO MUCH
man, this is helpful but what im specifically trying to do i have not found a single video. trying to make patches for arma using RHS. RHS has a helpful guide for porting into game. not on texturing the patch correctly. thanks for this video!!
Such a good tutorial so filled with little details that help with more than just twxture painting! Grant I love you!
Thanks For Tutorial!, It Really Helped Textures For My Pistol!
W content creator, always helping noobs out
After i finished painting i want to go to layout but the color on the object doesn't stay on,how can i save the painting?
Under image/save
i merged 3 shapes.
AND STILL ONLY ONE HAS THE TEXTURE
THE OTHER 2 ARE STILL FUCKING PURPLE
Yes you probably have 3 texture slots for each of the merged shapes. Delete them and it should work
It adds the base color of the image to the model but i can't paint anything.
I already checked the scale of the model, the image is set, uv is unwrapped, but when i try to paint it just don't go.
see my recent video on how to fix common problems
I followed the steps - I still don't see the texture paint on the model. I DO see it on the unwrap...I tried everything to make sure the correct material is assigned, and yes, I am in material preview mode.
Check face direction
I saw a way of doing texture exporting the UV image to a painting program and doing it there, painting in Blender is easier? I am wondering the pros and cons of both :/
By painting in blender you can just directly paint over the model in 3D. That's an advantage if you want to see how your model looks while you paint and saves the trial and error of painting things in another software and then importing it here just to notice that something isn't working
Ofcourse, it's upto the individual how they want to do their thing. I'm experienced with 2D art enough to paint good with a potato brush, so Blender's basic interface is okay with me.
What's your opinion, why do they keep changing the UI and places to things? 😅😅😅
It definitely gets frustrating but they always try and make things better I guess
DESPITE FOLLOWING the steps for some reason it still won't let me paint
there's a few things that can go wrong try with just a simple cube first to get the process
Hi my name is Gordan I know U are the thither but i have a tip 4 U
When U are setting up the texture size 2048 !
Tray slicking on the first row and drag down while holding left mouse button , now u can put in the value for bought at once ;)
yes i try not to do things like that in tutorials as it can confuse people and means a little more explaining.
@@grabbitt o ok 👌 sorry to bother U than
Bro ty for the tip
@@mrderin219 u are welcome ;)
hi i have dowloaded a model from sketchfab and tried to recolour it it recolours it but only in texture mode it does not imply the paint in modeling mode
are you in material preview mode?
i have done what i can but i can only paint on the UV Editor not on the 3D viewport. if someone know whats going on i need some help
Possibly face direction
I have _nearly_ followed the steps, but what I've noticed something unusual, which is that it doesn't let me paint. Yes, I have checked the face orientation (blue on the outside), but yet it still doesn't let me paint it. I am not used to Blender 4.2 as I was used to 3.6.2, -but I dunno on "doubles"- _(since I'm reading the replies)_. Any *other* tips? I'll keep you updated if I have solved this before you respond. Thanks in advance!
The mesh has no doubles, the orientation is correct, but it still doesn't let me paint. Let me know if you can. I am also on the Image Editor, yet it still doesn't let me paint somehow. I quite don't understand what's going on, so I'll be reliant on tutorials.
Check unwrap and check texture is linked. Lastly check you haven't accidentally added a mask or texture to your brush
@@grabbitt Will do.
_update -- September 12, 2024 4:58PM PDT_
@@grabbitt It turns out that the texture properties of the brush was *plain black,* which actually prevented me from even painting at all.
But hey, thanks for additional advice!
_edit: Best of luck, a young artist who isn't even adapted to 4.2_
thank you so much for this tutorial!
could you make an extended version of that, including the new features in blender 4.01?
i haven't seen any new painting features in 4.01
@@grabbitt ok 🤍
Thank you so much for this anyways.
This is not working
Bro I need some guidance on how to do it I’ve only started today😢😢
You'll want to check out my beginner series first
is there a way to paint squares
Brush alphas
Thank you really help as always.
It only lets me paint one part of my model. Any ideas of what to do?
check uvs are even check doubles also
Example: i want to paint JUST the wood part of the handle. how do i isolate that part to the 2 metal parts at the end and bottom? for example to use the bucket of paint and make it easier
see my painting playlist
@@grabbitt can you link the vid so its easier?
doesnt work for multiple objects so fake and gay
Actually it does but you have to adapt the technique slightly
W video helped ALOT
I still get the "Missing Textures, Detected!" error
have you hooked up the texture?
@@grabbitt I honestly have no idea what I did wrong but I figured it out; thank you for a simple and clear tutorial 😅
Really well explained!
I truly appreciate how you take the time to show the different places where you can find a tool or a setting.
I wish I can share with you my sculpture. It is the first I am making - ever - and it is coming along nicely thanks to you. Can’t thank you enough! 🙏🏼
One more important thing SHIFT+X is shortcut for sampling , before it was S !!!
The texture slot button in the main window isn't on my screen. That bit is just empty so I think I'll have to add the texture on another window for some reason.
Are you definitely in texture paint mode
@@grabbitt Yeah, I'm in texture paint mode it just isn't showing up.
Edit:
I think I got it. Just now realizing I haven't updated blender on this laptop, still 3.0 😅
@@spugediwestern78 OK then you will have to add a texture manually in the shader editor
That was fantastic! I've just been following your stylized tower tutorial on gamedev, couldn't figure out where to find to add new textures, searched on here, found you again :D
Thanks for the great tutorials dude
This tutorial was really helpful, until I got to actually texturing it and it only let me use the paint bucket tool, trying to draw over it did nothing and didn't show an error. So any idea on what that's about?
Check face direction
@@grabbitt Alright
@@grabbitt Alright, so it's all blue. Is that good?
@@JamesNJoe yeah that should be fine. Must be the uv unwrap. Try reunwrap using smart uvs
it doesnt let me paint the model
Check your nodes are connected. Check face direction
can we export the final result as a diffuse map so that it can be used in unity game engine?
any work around for this? Great video btw!! THank you so much
Yes the texture you make can be brought into unity
for some reason I can't see the outlines of the uv unwrapped object when i create a base colour. How could I fix it?
Increase bleed in options
Thanks man! Ever come across the problem where you are painting a texture and it's painting the brush image (like black square white circle) been stuck with the problem
Check your texture mask
"S" picker do not works.
It's now ctrl X I believe
It's "Shift+X" thanks! @grabbitt
ah yes sorry and thanks for reminding me
Thank you so much for keeping your stuff up date!!!
Can you explain when I should texture paint in Blender versus using another program like Substance Painter to do textures? As a beginner I'm having trouble deciding whether to invest in Substance Painter.
Substance painter is great and is a little easier
This is really useful! Thankyou so muchhh !!
Hey I followed the tutorial up to 3:20 but I can't paint on my object. Any ideas for why this isn't working?
Check your unwrap is clean and check your texture is hooked up in the shader editor
@@grabbitt yup the unwrap looks great, and the texture is connected to the shader.
@@CarrotKing269 check face direction
@@grabbitt The outside face is blue
@@CarrotKing269 I'll probably do a video on this in a couple of days time going through the things that can cause problems
i was wondering if we can transfer the vertex paint/sculpt mode paint to be a texture image 🤔
yes you bake it - see my baking playlist
@@grabbitt do you have any banana bread recipes? I accidentally left a banana in my backpack for a week and it's gone slightly darker and mushy
:)
@@grabbitt : - )
Thanks! I didnt know where the slots where in this update xd
Will you release any blender 4.0 courses grant?
Already have. And I'll update some of my old ones. I'll probably redo the character course for blender 4
@@grabbitt W
this is from 2 months ago so im not sure if you still reply to these anymore, but i have followed the tutorial exactly how you did it, but when i try to paint over my model, it simply just doesn't do anything, any idea on what could be going on here? i've been on this for hours
nevermind, don't know what the problem was but i just reloaded it and now its working, im so stupid i should've tried reloading first, thanks for the tutorial
Good to hear 👍
seems a lot faster now, just did a paining of painting on my cat model and no lag :)
HOW THE FUCK DO I SAVE MY WORK SO IT DOESNT DISSAPEAR?????????? Maybe tell people also that Blender is not saving any images.
Pretty sure I mention that at the end. When you close blender it says do you want to save your image
@@grabbitt nonono... that is not doing anything for beginners since its not packed in the blender file, that is something you should mention in the beginning, fundamentals and the "framework" behind it first, and then going into details, the devs as well the people making tutorials on youtube are HORRIBLE in thinking like a beginner again. We dont understand the structure of it all how it all fits together. Tonight: i ripped my shirt in two pieces because i got so mad about my textures disappearing and i had to do several Reddit posts to get an understanding, since you cant google anything anymore in todays internet. You have to either specifically click on "pack files in blender file" or go to an image window and save it manually.
@remusveritas739 what version of blender are you using. Mine always asks me if I wanted to save the image.
I try my best but miss things out now and again and unfortunately it's impossible to change a youtube video once it's uploaded. Reuploading is hugely damaging to your view count and pretty much destroys any chance of the video being seen.
@@grabbitt no thats not what im asking, youre doing a good job, much better than most tutorialists anyway. i am sorry, i was fumingly angry. The problem is the structure of the internet/chaning versions of the program/not being able to efficiently google stuff etc. its not your fault i am sorry
I can’t do this, after I unwrap it and click texture paint tab (2:01) the UV unwrap doesn’t transfer and you don’t say anything about that happening. Yours transfers mine doesn’t.
Perhaps send me a screen shot or video even
Still not successful, are there addons to simplify the installation process? I keep going through tutorials but I get nowhere. Nothing happens when I try to paint and once again I followed the tutorial to the letter.
Check your face direction
Exactly what I was going to look for! Such perfect timing omg
I created the texture...and followed throughly....but in material preview mode....I don't see my paints...only I can see them in solid mode
Have you hooked up the texture
I've had the issue of models that have placed semest
Check doubles and inside faces.
Very helpful, thanks. But shouldn't the UV image be saved as a separate file before exiting the program?
yes. I thought i mentioned that at the end. Blender now has a feature that it tells you if it is not saved
GREATE TUTORIAL! I JUST CANT SEEM TO GET THE TEXTURE TO SHOW UP IN THE RENDER TAB (sry cabs lock)
make sure you save it
when I try to insert an image instead of a base color, this doesn't work :( i mean i can see it on the solid mode during Texture Paint, but it's not shown on the material preview and display render mode
Is it hooked up
I COULDNT FIND ANY TUTORIALS FOR BLENDER TEXTURE PAINTING TUTS UNTIL NOW
TYYYYYY!!!
Hi, very helpful the video, but i have a problem. I cant paint all the parts, of unwrapping model. I can paint one and the others are still as they were before. In 2D i can see all the parts by the way. What i have to do, i need to paint all the parts of my model please.
I have the same problem did you find the solution? @mikerusby
okay now this one works....quick question is the texture slots over on the texture paint section is not = to the obj's texture on bottom right panel?
Yes, if I understand you correctly
hi, i have done everything correctly and the texture shows on the left side along with the color ive set it as but when i try to paint on both sides it just doesnt work.
nevermind, it fixed itself
700th like yay btw very useful video!
The paint still isnt showing :/
Try on just a cube to start with
@@grabbitt did that. it didn't work.
@@yert5035 not sure why that would be
Nice vid! I have one question: I noticed that you didn't select the edges used the "Mark Seams" before unwrapping the object. Does the "Smart UV Project" do that automatically? No more "Mark Seams"?
yes, its just not quite as clean which doesn't matter too much
@@grabbitt Thanks for the reply. I'm still learning about seams and selecting the right edges for a clean UV Map, but I love texture painting!
Thanks! Now paint with Image/Decal tut?
See my playlist
Hello, Grant, thank you so much for this guide. Does it make sense to study hand painting if I'm not an artist, I can't draw...I can learn it technically if I, fot example, follow your course, but will I be able to hand paint if I don't have an "artistic" backround?
I would recommend understanding the basics but generally work on procedural texturing
Thanks for the reply!🤗
Is there a way to color pick in blender in texture painting mode??
Ctrl x
everything looks the same all the way up untill you actually "paint" when i swipe, nothing happens. i even see the shader window looking exactly like yours. i can input a texture and smear or soften it but i cannot draw on it
Check face direction and doubles
Tried the process on a fresh cube, and it worked. Couldn't get in on the figure I import. Jumped back to 3.6, where I'm more comfortable, and with your older tutorial, it was fine. Got the job done. That's what matters.
it aint working for me
is this the one we need to do after rocket made video? because its so complicated
no i would suggest looking at some of my blender 3 tutorials, such as the well, check my website for some ideas
Is possible to paint with layers in Blender 4?
yes, its awkward but see my texture painting playlist for details
Hello and congratulations.have you some tutorial for windows set up for best Blender running?
Not yes. I don't think there is a huge amount of difference to be gained. But running on Linux is a lot better
@@grabbitt Kinux?!hmmm...🤔
How do i texture paint, on something i already gave Color with the nodes in the shaping workspace?
Bake those colours onto a texture. See my baking playlist
I Will try that, thank you🙏🏼
