ONE POINT OF CLARITY ON THE HISTORY OF 10MM AUTO:
10mm existed BEFORE the 1986 shootout in Miami, developed by Jeff Cooper/Dornaus & Dixon/and FFV Norma. Obviously, that's what Sonny Crocket carried in the Bren-Ten. After 1986, the FBI got more involved and ended up adopting the cartridge for use in the Smith & Wesson 1076.

Excellent review brother! It's a shame S&W doesn't make parts for or service these old DA/SA pistols. I understand why S&W focuses on striker fired pistols because of market trends, but abandoning their legacy guns is a mistake in my opinion. Enjoy your awesome pistol!

Thank you so much, my friend! I agree. I will say if you scrounge around on Numrich and eBay, you can usually find what you need... for now. But, to me, it just seems like something is missing from the S&W brand without these guns. Unfortunately, they don't seem to agree. Thanks again for the comment!

Hey hipstertactical, I love your review on this gun. You totally went in depth and paid attention to every exact detail about this gun. I own this gun with fixed sites.
I live in the city of San Leandro, CA. My house was burglarized back in 2007. This specific firearm was a part of my gun collection that was stolen.
The Benicia, CA Police Department recovered it during a drug warrant raid from a while ago. I got a letter from them stating that they had and they tracked me through the serial number on it but I needed to get a release form from the CA DOJ!
I went through the process, got my DOJ form, picked it up, and it's now back in my possession.
Keep up the great work on your in depth details on your reviews.
Have a good one. Take care!😁

Hello, my friend! Thank you so much for your comment and for sharing your story. I'm sure it must have been heartbreaking to find your house burglarized--especially when one of your prized firearms was taken. But... it's awesome that your story had a happy ending. There's that old saying... if you let something go, and it comes back to you? Well, I'd say your 4506 is meant to be. And thank you for kind words on my review! Very much appreciate it. If my viewers are anything like me... I really get into the "finer points" on guns I'm interested in. Figure I can't be the only one who looks "beyond the basics" when it comes to guns. Anyway, take care and thanks again! I should a review on the OG Sig P229 (in 9mm) posted this weekend!

I have one 645, two 4506s, and four 4506-1s. I almost always carry one of my 4506-1s concealed on my hip in a Don Hume H721 thumb break holster and 2 spare magazines. On a whim, I will occasionally carry one of my 4506s. It's a heavy firearm, but the heaviness helps absorb recoil like no other .45 ACP pistol I have ever owned, even my stainless Springfield Mil-Spec 1911. I know how to operate the Smith & Wesson 2nd and 3rd Gen .45s like the back of my hand. It is also a billy goat with ammo, eating every type of bullet I have ever fed into it. They are also my SHTF pistols, so if one breaks down and is unrepairable, I have spares I can pick up without having to relearn. I always loved the 1911, but when it came time to buy my first firearm, there were no 1911s to be found in any store with an ambidextrous safety, which I need since I am left handed. I could have bought a 1911 and waited weeks to have an ambidextrous safety installed, or I could just buy this lone Smith & Wesson 645 in a display case with an ambidextrous safety already installed. It looked enough like a 1911 for my tastes, so I bought it. The 1911 was instantly relegated to my second favorite type of handgun. Smith & Wesson 2nd and 3rd Gen full size .45 ACPs will always stay at the top of my list of favorite type of firearm. I will probably acquire another 645 in the future, even though my current one almost a safe queen now, and have been toying with the idea of getting a 1006 just for the hell of it.

Nice! I mean, the 4506/4506-1s seem like pretty ideal SHTF pistols. Indestructible and reliable. I'd love to get my hands on a 745--it was the SAO target version of the 645. I haven't shot my 4506-1 in a while. Might need to change that soon. Thanks!

    I love my S&W 4516, S&W 4513TSW, S&W 4006TSW, S&W 5906.
I carry all of the above except the 5906.
    In the process of acquiring a S&W 4506 ,S&W 4566, 1006, and 1066
I trained with these guns for years with members of LAPD SWAT team.
They are my favorite handgun and next to the 1911.
Not a big fan of tactical Tupperware guns.
The 3rd gen guns are the best that S&W ever made even better than than are manufacturing currently. These are superior firearms than anything on the market currently in my humble opinion

Ricky - Thanks so much for the comment and for sharing your experience with this hulk of a handgun. Always great to get real-world context about these guns from people who really used them on duty. So thanks for that… and for your service. I agree-there’s something special… something endearing… about the 3rd gens. I’ve owned a 4516, 4566, 1076, and a 3913TSW. With the big bore 3rd gens, I really love the 5 inch models; this 4506-1 really exceeds my expectations from a shootability standpoint. I also currently own a 5906 and a 6904… I have a review on the 5906 if you wanna check it out. Anyway… thanks again for chiming in and I appreciate the sub. Take care. -Matt

3rd Gen. Smith & Wesson pistols were the peak of company quality. They really produced a quality, sexy, reliable, durable handgun. They really couldn’t make this pistol again and have it remain adorable. These will truly become a serious collectible handgun in the very near future.

I tend to agree. The 3rd gens were excellent pistols--especially towards the end of the '90s, when the started to use CNC machines, etc. And yes--the 4506s have already shot up in price. I'm happy to have gotten this one for a halfway decent price. Thanks for the comment!

And I love .45 too--and this thing is such a nice-shooting .45. Really dig it. At intermediate distances, it seems about as accurate as the 1911s I've had (two Colt commanders). They also had a few 6450 and 6451 model transitional guns that came out before the 4506 between the transition from the 645 to the 4506 if I’m not mistaken. It still has the square trigger guard but non polished slide. The safety is on on the frame like 4506 not on the slide like the 645. I guess they were basically parts guns to use up parts from the older 645.

No problemo! Glad you enjoyed it-I don’t know off hand what spring weight you’d need for .45 Super…. But I know the steel Smith .45s are candidates for that cartridge (as with the HK USP .45). I’m pretty sure the 645/4506 would be fine for .45 Super? As mentioned, the -1s are beefier. Check the Smith forum-there’s bound to be sone discussion on .45 Super in these guns… and probably some info on spring weight. Wolff springs sells a range of different weights, so they’d probably have what you need. It’s something I’d kinda like to try in line, too. Thanks for watching!

I bought my 4506-1 new in Feb.1993, paid $580 + tax. Using inflation calculator, that's $1,225 today. So finding one now for $1,000 or less seems like a good deal to me. As an investment, I should have bought gold ($330/oz then, $1,980/oz today) or Apple ($0.40/shr then, $193/shr today). Also, the 645 and no-dash 4506s have hooked trigger guards… 4506-1s have round trigger guards. But, a round trigger guard should fit in most holsters for a hooked trigger guard. You’ll have to play it by ear: but, generally, a 4506-1 should it any holster for a 645/4506. Not sure, however, if a 645/4506 would fit in a 4506-1 holster, given the trigger guard differences.
