Smith & Wesson 4506 Pistol Review

  • Here is a forgotten about semi-auto pistol from a whole family of 3rd Generation Semi-auto pistols by S&W. These and others from that family have kinda gotten lost since the "Glock Craze" and popularity of other polymer pistols like M&P's, Springfields, Rugers, and etc.. S&W's entire 3rd generation of semi's are really great guns, and deserve a look from anyone in the market for reasonably priced, high capacity semi-auto pistols.
    Check it out and I hope you enjoy.

    3rd generation Smith & Wesson pistols are what I feel are the peak of S&W quality, ingenuity, and craftsmanship. S&W’s modern day &P series of handguns don’t hold a candle to 3rd Gen. your 4506 is absolutely beautiful! Thank you for review and video!

    Great video! S&W Gen 3 in any caliber are just like their revolver counterparts. Works of art. The run was cut short by the polymer framed striker fired phenomenon but in the proper hands, you will never be under armed. They are frighteningly accurate in any caliber. Thanks.

    NOTE: Actually this is a good open OR Concealed Carry gun. Yes it's length is 7 1/8" inches.and weighs a hefty 42 ounces. But! My Springfield XO Tactical (fulsized) is longer at 7 3/3 (almost 8 incs)! And although lighter at 32 oz. if you have a good strong belt buckle and holster, no one even knows you're carrying! Because it ALL Depends on HOW you Position your gun on your Body! Now carrying a 7" or 8" barrel gun (with a length of 11" or 13" inches total!) could be very challenging.

    Nice, I'm not into autos for the most part anymore but I like the autos from Smith mainly the ones that this one came from like the Models 39, 52 maybe, and another one. There was a 38 wadcutter, a single stack 9mm and a double stack 9mm that were blued or nickel and they made a stainless one early on and those are so nice. This is nice too, I just like originals best, but that's nice. My dad had a stainless Smith double stack 9mm that didn't have the same style of sights, it had the more simple plain sights and no hammer spur. I believe it's the same gun used in Reservoir Dogs by the gang. Same safety and you can uncock the gun with the safety. Looks nice man, I like the wood on guns too. That's all I ever want on mine. I have one gun a Taurus 617 that has a weird grip frame and I have oversized wooden grips but I usually keep the rubbers on that one gun because it's easier to conceal and they are small so it's fine. It's usually only for home anyways. I can't wait until I get my first (whatever the single or doubles stack original) 9mm Mod 52 I think. There are some beautiful nickel ones and a blued ones that look flawless on TH-cam. Thanks for sharing.

    _The Shield_ and _Training Day_ used the 4506-1. _Miami Vice_ showcased the 4506 in the final season. Before that, it was the 645, and before that, it was the Bren Ten. I love my S&W 2nd and 3rd Gen full size 45s. And you use one of these as your EDC. If you can carry a stainless 1911 with a 5" barrel, you can carry a 645, 4506, or a 4506-1. I usually carry the 4506-1, but sometimes I will carry the 4506. I use a saddle brown Don Hume H721 belt slide holster with a thumb break, and it accommodates both weapons. I bought some Hogue checkered rosewood grips, but my hand isn't quite large enough to get a good grip, so I went back to the Hogue rubber grips.

    The ONLY reason S&W stopped making these wonderful handguns was because of Glock and the plastic handgun craze and idiots thinking a lighter weight handgun is better. All a lighter weight handgun does is allows you feel MORE recoil than a stainless steal gun. Plastic guns do NOT function better and are NOT more reliable.
    I carried a S&W 5906 on duty in two different states in two different jobs for years. I bet my life on it's reliability and it never let me down. It was not overly heavy in my holster and he extra mags on the other side of my duty belt counter balanced it. I even carried my ASP baton next to the gun without weight worries.
    The 4506 CAN be a carry conceal gun based on body frame. IF you are a 145lb skinny minnie kind of a guy then probably not. If you are 180lbs or more then yes. It can even be concealed in a shoulder holster if you want. I know, I also have a 4506.

      Dude, you're preaching to the Choir. I'm 6'-1" and 233 lbs. I'm sure it can be carried comfortably concealed. I just choose not to. I also had a 5906 for several years. Both of them are 100% reliable and never had any type of malfunction.
      Plastic or polymer gun are not better. They're just lighter, different and cheaper to make.

      WOOHOO!!! Yeah baby. Like you said in the video if one is comfortable carrying concealed a 1911, then one can be with a 4506.
      I will NEVER buy a plastic framed handgun. I picked up an FN57 and that damn thing had practically NO weight at all. Which means you feel EVER ounce of recoil out of that thing. I don't care if it fires a bullet slightly larger than .22, it does fire it at over 1000fps making it a high ballistic bullet which lots of recoil.
      My neighbor bought a S&W .357 revolver made from that light weight barely aluminum frame. I swear it had the same, if not more, recoil than my Ruger Vaquero 44/40 ALL STEEL cowboy gun.
      I promised my self that if I ever win a LARGE lottery I would either 1) Try to buy one of every model S&W 1st-3rd Gen handguns to make the perfect collection or 2) See if I could talk S&W to sell me the machines and tools for their 1st - 3rd Gen models so I can start making them again. And even make parts to sell. Easy money right there.
      The cheaper plastic guns is the ONLY reason S&W switched. It was simply cheaper to make and they could keep up with the glockaholics. Beretta did the same thing with their Cougar line and switched to the Storm line. The Cougars were freaking awesome guns but they went to the plastic frame bullshit.

    • @mr2275cur
      @mr2275cur  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the info. I am not an expert on these guns, so i cannot dispute it. But, I did buy this gun used from its original owner, and he assured me that it and the magazines are as he purchased it.
      I looked into the history of this gun before buying one and learned that it was developed to replace the 645 as S&W moved into it's 3rd Generation of semi-auto development. . It being an early production model with the stepped-frame, I'm wondering if S&W used the the same 645 mags with those before changing the followers and base plates on later issues. This one also came with the straight Zenoy grip too, which was the only one available on early versions. I just prefer the curves grips feel in my hand.
      I prefer the metal base plates and don't care what color the followers are. It's a great gun and love shooting it.

    • @thereturningshadow
      @thereturningshadow 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mr2275cur
      Yes the 4506 was the next step to the 645 just like the 5906 was the next step to the 659. The .40 cal and 10mm guns didn't hit the market until 3rd gen. It was just 9mm and .45 cal until then.
      Actually S&W just changed the color of the follower to and the base plate to indicate 4506 instead of 645. he black plastic base plate was to match the plastic grips. The 4506's major change over the 645 was the slide and the rear of the frame. The 4506 allows for full adjustable rear sites and a dove tailed front sight which allows for replacements to night sights if wanted.
      645 couldn't do that. The front sight was just a fin that was part of the slide with orange paint. The rears were standard three dot style non-adjustable. PLUS the safety/decocker lever literally had a phillips head screw holding the right side lever onto the rest of the safety base.
      However the frame of the 645 is superior in my opinion because it had a more standard metal main spring housing like a 1911 and the grips were more 1911 like and could be swapped out with other styles.
      The 4506's one piece grip and spring housing only allows for replacement with the bulk Hogue rubber grips or custom made wooden ones like you have which are as you know are much think than the original ones.
      The magazine ARE interchangeable. They can also be used in 4516s as well as most other .45 models in the 3rd Gen line. They just stuck out of hte bottom in the compact models BUT I believe they sold little spacers you could put on the bottom of the mags to make it less cumbersome.
      Yes the 4506 and pretty much all S&W guns from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Gen models were ALL very reliable and tough as nails. Which is why police departments all over the country bought them like crazy. In the 80s and early 90s it was either Beretta or S&W that was widely used. Regular usage on the Butter Stick on a plastic handle didn't start happening until the mid to late 90s.
      I would rely on my 5906 or 4506 every day 1000x more than any other handgun if my life depended on it. And I did just that for years.
