    IMO, these older S&Ws are more appealing than most newer polymer handguns.

    The S&W Model 5906... First gun I ever purchased. Bought it new in 1994 when I was 23 years old. Price was $569.00 back then and the shop owner let me make payments until I could pay it off. The day I was finally able to take it home, I remember like it was yesterday! American made! American steel! American quality and craftsmanship! I couldn't have been more proud of that gun. I have traded and sold many guns in the 23 years since, and now looking back, I could kick myself in the ass. Such regret that, at the time, I didn't have the money to buy two of them! It is still the gun that sits on my night stand to this day, and I love it now just as much as I did 23 years ago. Sure it has some weight! It's a Man's gun!! Nothing against plastic, but sometimes it's nice to hold raw steel and some weight in your hand! I own a couple Beretta's, and Sigs, but if there were ever a handgun that I would prefer my cold dead hands to be pryed from... I'd want it to be my 5906!!

      It was my first gun purchased too. Still have it; would never sell it. Great quality and craftsmanship. The weight is apparent when you first pick it up but once you carry it or shoot it you don't even notice.

    Smith and Wesson in my opinion made an error when they stopped producing the #5906 and the #4506. The 5906 was and is my show off gun for accuracy at the range. Once you set the adj sights properly it will do you proud. It's so accurate you could shave your moma's mustache with it if she had one. : ) " The betrayal, the betrayal,how could you ' S&W' ? polymer guns? polymer guns? what about the rest of us ? At least they kept the '1911'. Thank God for that. it would be great if we had the 5906 and the 4506 to go with the 1911. They should replace some of those 'sissy guns' they make and bring back the 5906 and 4506. 'GALCO' did and perhaps still does make a S.O.B. and MIAMI VICE rig for the 5906 model. I used to carry one in a MV shoulder holster ,concealed carry. If anyone is lucky enough to find a well kept 4506 or a 5906,you should get it. Or, you could be a fool and pass it by so some lucky bastard like me may happen upon it. : D

    The 5906/659 and 3906/639 autos are undoubtedly the most beautiful 9mm pistols ever made. They also are some of the most reliable autos ever made. In the initial military trials, the Beretta 9mm pistol malfunctioned on an average of one out of 2,000 rounds. The S&W 459 (the aluminum framed 2nd generation pistol) malfunctioned on an average of one out of every 952 rounds. Both of these were astounding performances in a day when ultra-reliable guns were just coming into their own. The stock Colt .45acp the military used as a control malfunctioned on add-on average of one out of every...hmmm...can't recall now, but it was in the double digits. Marine Lt. Col. Jeff Cooper called the change to 9mm one of the worst decisions the U.S. Military ever made. He was right except for one teeny-tiny little detail: it was one of the _best_ things that ever happened in auto pistol development! Semi-autos went from being very good to outstanding. Until then, articles in gun magazines pitted the utter reliability of the revolver against the occasional jam from an auto, leaving the nagging “What-if" question lingering in the end. But with the new competitive spirit that came from the trials, we have all the outstanding pistols that have come from it. The 9mm pistols have greater firepower, accuracy, penetration and flawless reliability, all of which are preferable to soldiers than the old claptrap .45ACP.
    The stainless Smiths ago have become major film stars in _Sons of Anarchy, Lie to Me and The Mentalist_, as well as countless movies. By the way, S&W really cut corners on its last iterations, which gave the guns a ghastly two-tone look. They also have hideous black plastic hammers and triggers that detract greatly from the beauty of the guns.

    • @vdelrio999
      @vdelrio999 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +357Muzzleblast You mention the 9mm are more reliable but the 1911 had better performance and a claptrap. Respectfully asking, do you have a source for those stats regarding the initial military trials?

    • @johnroberts6695
      @johnroberts6695 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +vdelrio999 Alas, no. These were some very early figures and that particular test was rejected because many of those who intended to offer samples couldn't submit them in time. So the trials began anew. Perhaps S&W could provide the dates and figures if you need exact information. The three primary guns in the test were the Beretta, S&W 459 and a Colt 1911 as a control. At the time I was really hankering for the Beretta, as I had been led to believe it was one of the strongest, most durable autos that had ever been developed. The thick (and large) rails I thought would prevent frame cracks and equalize the stress of repeated firing. The lack of an ejection port I still see as a plus because there's nothing for a case to hang up on. And though I loved the looks of the S&W 459, but given the horrible reputation of the 59 "Jammomatic," I wanted no part of former. Finally, however, I got a 559 (steel frame version), then a 659. So the data was coming in slow and I (and many others) were taken by a new series of guns that fed and fired jackected hollow points, 15 or 16 at a time. But there were so many tests in these trials that I don't know where to find the results. Again, the figures I quoted were from some of the very early tests.

    • @vdelrio999
      @vdelrio999 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +John Roberts Ah. Thanks. I'm not into 1911s (100 year old technology) and, from your commentary about 1911s having a lower failure rate, I thought I was going to have to rethink my preference to 2nd-3rd generation S&Ws.

    I love the third gen's. Just a little tip for you, when you go to put the slide back on the frame. As you said, keep the hammer down, but if you take the slide stop, and lay the round part (The pin that goes under the barrel) on top of the three levers, it will hold then down and the slide will slip right over them.

    I love the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gen Smiths. Extremely reliable and well made. As soon as the manufactures figured out you don’t have to mill bar stock to make these beautiful guns, and rather just pour plastic, these were doomed. It’s really unfortunate. By the way, Crimson Trace actually used to sell lasers for the third generations and they’ve been discontinued.

    You have no idea the smile this video has put on my face, Sootch. I'm so glad a credible reviewer on TH-cam got around to doing a video on one so people could get a good look at it. The 5906 is a very underrated pistol, and I was once a proud owner of a 1992 made model with stainless trigger and hammer, and with Novak sights. It was my first 9mm pistol, and I miss it dearly. I hope to replace it someday. I really thank you for posting this video, it brought me back. :)

    I do agree with you and the magazine disconnect for the LE community but I believe the main reason is for individual safety of a person preforming cleaning and or maintainence on a weapon. Some inexperienced people were shooting themselves or an innocent thinking the weapon was rendered safe just because the mag was ejected while there was still a cartridge in the chamber. The mag disconnect solved this problem. No mag, weapon cannot discharge a round accidently left in the chamber.

    Hey there Sootch. I've been looking for a new 9mm handgun to take to the range with me. I've been comparing the CZ 75B and the S&W 5906 quite a lot. I've found the 5906 and it's aluminum alloy-framed brother, the 5903, for $300-350. The CZ, through my local dealer, will run $475 before tax. As far as accuracy and "shootability" goes, is there one you'd recommend over the other? I'm not an amazing shooter but I do want a gun that, when I've trained with it a good bit, I can get 2 inch or smaller groups at 7-10 yards. If there's one that you feel is easier to shoot accurately, I'd be much obliged to know. Any recommendation is much appreciated! Love the channel and the fact that you're a fellow South Carolinian. :) Keep up the amazing work!

    The former PD/ now "Protective Services"/armed guards of a local hospital in my area carries this for their duty gun. There was an alert put out for a psyc patient in the psyc ward and the hospital policy requires the Officers to remove their weapons magazine if they have to respond to that unit to assist with a patient restraint. Makes sense now when I saw the officer remove the mag, was unaware of that feature on this handgun.

    I was a gun dealer from 1985 thru 1995 and I sold LOTS of 59-series pistols, both the second-gen 659 and the third-gen 5906. Both were excellent selling handguns and were a favorite of law enforcement, of which, represented most of my customers. Most preferred the adjustable sight version because it was the ONLY pistol at the time that featured a special rear site guard, which provides exceptional protection.

    I have had my 5906 over 20 years and it is still one of my favorites, and it is always dependable. Breaks down similar to other semi-auto's, but it can be temperamental putting the slide back on. Nothing as simple as a Glock.

    sootch00, Thank you for all the great reviews and preps. I recently purchased a 6906 Smith. Today at the range I had what I call a catastrophic failure. I was running the mag at a slow pace when at 3 rounds to go and a chambered round the trigger would not release the hammer. I manually ejected that round and even during double action the trigger would not move the hammer. After arriving home I slid an empty mag in and the trigger became active again. Have you ever had this issue with 3rd generation Smith pistols? I love the pistol BUT failure to fire equals me going back to my CZ for EDC until I gain back confidence in this 6906.

    • @Gearack
      @Gearack 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Scott Osborn Sir, it's likely that your magazine was not seated fully into the magwell. All 3rd Generation Smiths have magazine disconnects. A tap-rack drill will fix this issue most of the time. This doesn't qualify as a "catastrophic" failure as nothing detonated and you still have all your fingers. I hope the issue doesn't happen again because if it does, it means your magazine catch is worn out and needs replacement. Best of luck, Scott

    Great video and choice of weapon. The 5906 was the very 1st pistol I carried as a police officer, I bought it at Magnum Force in Pompano Beach, Fla. Where most of us made our gun purchases. The 5906 served me well in my career. I was under the impression that the gun could not be fired w/out its magazine. Later, I attended a tactical weapons class taught by John Pride (LAPD)......-->

    IMO, Colt has way more cachet than S&W but S&W, again, IMO, has a way more interesting product line. I love and trust the 1st, 2nd, 3rd gen S&W semi autos far more than the Colt 1911s.

    Is yours a certain model? I'm looking at a website that has some in stock and the photo shows the round trigger guard model, but no side protectors on the rear sight and the hammer is is stainless and not grooved.

    Sootch,
    what is the realationship between this gun and the 6906 model? I have a review of the 6906, and for the most part they seem to be about the same, other than the color! any info you can pass on would be appreciated!

    I have a LE S&W 5946. I realize it's not the exact same gun but it's sure close enough. It has no safety and the gun WILL fire without a mag in the chamber. That was designed that way specifically FOR LE in case their magazine was removed during a struggle. If you are a LE officer you need everything possible at your disposal. With the gun not firing without a magazine in the chamber you have a nice paperweight if you have no other magazines. That one round could save your life or someone elses.

    As much as I love my 5906, I like my S&W 659 even more. I don't know why the company made black hammers and triggers, but it did. I I've also never had a jam or malfunction of any sort. I like the 659 better primarily because I can easily remove the grips and, if desired, put new ones on it. I also like the appearance of the 659. That said, everyone seems to talk about the 5906. I have both guns and like both, getting the 659 after the S&W flopped on the 39/59.
    I have vivid memories of how horrible the 39/59 were received. The term "jammomatic" was first applied to those guns and I really wanted the S&W 59 because it would take 15 rounds! In fact, the first gun magazine I ever bought had the banner article (and I still have the magazine), “Why A $49 Raven .25ACP Is Better Than A $220 S&W 59 Automatic."
    Today, reading about the S&W 59 and 39s, you'd think they were fantastic autos, but very few articles recount the really horrible early days of these guns. Yet the advice back then was, S&W makes great revolvers, but stay away from their centerfire autos!

    I had gotten the Smith and Wesson model 4006 blue pearl coded. 4 1/2 barrel. It was nice 40 cal back in 1992 after I got out of the Marines. I knew the 40 would be the bullet of the future! I used it in my security job my Captain and other guys used this 9mm 5906. I had 3 mags 12 rounds mags. I like it! To bad it's not the 10mm version. I hated the safety on it! It hated the weapon because it would not fire if the mag was out of the mag well! Not good in combat. I paid 550 bucks for mine. I came home with my Colt 1991A1 45 ACP That I carried my first year in. Then my 2ND year they took my 45 Colt to replace it with the dam Beretta 92 F 9mm crap! I go F that I got me a Sig Sauer P 220 45 ACP and carried that until I got out of the Marines in 1991. I got on our dept. After college and the academy in 1995! My dept. Used the Smith and Wesson model 4506 45 ACP! I WAS LIKE YAHOO! One year later while requalifing for my second year my Smith and Wesson broke inside some were. It would not fire or chamber a round. We had no more left s I asked my Chief if I could use my Sig Sauer P220 45 ACP on duty he said yes. So I requalify with it perfect and carried until 2015. We switched to the Sig Sauer P 320 45 ACP. NO PROBLEMS LIKE WITH THE 9MM JUNK!

    I conceal carried my 5906 for many years. It was 99.9 percent reliable. Many years ago I got a case of Wolf 9mm ammunition. The ammunition damage or broke the extractors in two Glocks and a Browning Highpower. All the guns were repaired and what ammunition that was left over was destroyed.

    I had a S&W 910, the budget verison of the 5906. An excellent firearm. It wasn't Beretta, SIG, Walther refined but it was reliable, accurate enough to do the job and easy to maintain and find accessories for. What more could you ask for?

    I found a 669 not long ago and that one has an aloy frame. Nice and light. I would carry it, but I am stuck on the cz rami, which is heavier, but smaller. Also have the 4566 tsw all steel and heavy, but pleasant to shoot. My sig p220 on the other hand has sharper recoil than the p220. Maybe a lighter projectile will do the trick. On the other hand, if one goes to light faster projectile, why not use a 9mm+ in a smaller and lighter package... The problems we have to deal with LOL

    I love ffee 5906 i've got, it was the last pistol my grandfather carried when he was a police he was caring it when he was shot and killed. on august 12, 1990 james emory was pulled over for speeding by my grandpa, he walked up to the window of the car unknowing that empty had preexisting charges, and before my grandpa could say can I see your license and registration he was shot in the face by emory, emory used a .38 . and my papa was taken to the hospital an pronounced doa (dead on arrival)

    A true "All American" pistol.Jumping on the "wonder-nine"(as in 9mmx19)bandwagon at the beginning of the nineteen-nineties.
    Today in the last 10-11 years,manufacture handgun designs has been polymer framed and double-action only type striker fire(like a Glock)with no exposed hammer("Ruger SR9","Springfield XD","S&W M&P","Khar",& a UAE made "Caracal" 9mm that looks alittle like the "Steyr M9").

    @Rangerscott69 it's the very last batch of the 5906's made, the one you describe is still a 3rd generation just an earlier 3rd gen and the side protectors on rear sight are the optional adjustable rear sight. most common are the standard non adjustable rears like you have been seeing online. either one is a great gun, as are the 4506 .45's

    Before you release the mag and place a little bit of pressure on the trigger and then drop the mag. When you pull the trigger, the pistol still can fire. S&W was aware of this and I’m not sure if they ever addressed it. Also, many Pompano Beach officers carried the Walther PPK/S as back up and Magnum always had a waiting list whenever they were shipped in. Stay Safe!

    @PAhuntandgame The model 39-2 is almost the granddaddy of them all as far as S&W autos go. The original was the Model 39, some improvements came, then the 39-2, then they took the 39 concept, combined a double stack mag, the model 59, and the rest is history.
