- Rig and Bait for Pier fishing. GULP! Sandworm. I went to a pier fishing with my son. It was on our weekend family trip. So, we only have 1,5 hours for fishing. My choice was a Free rig with GULP! Sandworm. Cast and slow retrieving. Just like regular soft lure fishing. We caught croaker one each. So... I'd say it was an Okay day.
This setup is easy to rig and simple to fish. I'd recommend it for beginners.

If this is really Ventura pier, you should also try Goleta pier. It’s where my friends and I would go night fishing all the time before I moved away. Lots of mackerel, perch, and I’ve been lucky enough to catch some calicos. Fish are typically right under the pier or there is a pipeline that runs up the right side of the entire pier. The pipe is covered in seaweed so it’s like a long kelp forest for all the fish to live in. The beach is also very well known for halibut and white sea bass. It would be cool to see a video of you fishing there. I can’t wait to visit for the holidays and try my luck. Great video as always 🎣

I use a very similar rig on jetty fishing, except: 1) I tie a stop knot about 18" above the hook, so the weight won't go all way down to the hook. No bead. The action of the Gulp Sandworm is amazing. 2) I use a P-Line Slinky Sinker (home made), almost never sang. 3) I use a Tram Crappie MC38B progressive cam-action hook, almost always come out free from a snag. The most effective rig on jetty so far, snag free, and very simple and easy rigging, almost a fish each and every cast.
