Gulp has really been a real game changer for me the last 8 yrs. I can be very mobile, cast further, able to fish in the surf or strong current without losing the bait. It's changed my entire style of fluking...for the better. Another eye opening video John, thank you!

Cool video John. I catch flounder over here in the UK, but mainly on ledgered bait. I think we brits - me anyway, tend to assume that flounder, and flatfish in general, tend to just lay on the bottom and chew on the occasional worm that might happen to drift by. I'd never have imagined they were so active and aggressive in their pursuit of food. I guess that's how they've survived to the present day. What a dope: I should have worked that one out really. Yeah I fished for them on a charter today and they told us that if we didn't get a bite in 2-3 minutes to drop the line again or even move. Half the time we reeled it in we discovered that our bait was taken. We got quite a few bites as well as caught flounder.

Man that was great ! Liked and subscribed. Looks like you have a lot more flounder there than we do here. I learned to tie my hooks with a bit of braided line to keep from loosing fish.

I couldn’t help but laugh at the 2nd clip where that other double jig set up is bouncing up and down and the flounders going nuts going for top jig then bottom jig 😂 then seeing another flounder cruise following your lure for so long before biting 😂

Hi John, love watching the videos. You mentioned that one of the reasons why fluking becomes more challenging when the wind picks up is because the clarity of the water goes down. In your earlier videos you mentioned that when the drift is too fast you use a drift control sock. How much of a difference does the drift control sock make?

You are right about the current muddying the waters. In the deep ocean there becomes layers of water like the top can be murky but when you swim 20 ft down then it can clear up and if you go deeper then there could be even another layer.

You should try a gulp and a regular plastic twistytail side-by-side and see if they hit both.
were the sea robbins not present that day? Is that new gulp bait able to specifically attract only flounder? If so that would really help anglers
at the beginning of this season i found a tsunami airwave elite inshore rod for $80 it was rated 10-20lb and and 1/4-3/4oz. In the beginning i was just kayaking to areas and fishing from shore, now i have been fishing in the kayak itself. think its worth grabbing a tsunami classic for kayak jigging instead?
they should be sending you 5 gallon buckets of gulps. you do more for the gulp name than they do! great video as always

they sure like the smell and taste of the Gulp bait.
I've accidentally tasted Gulp! juice. Forgot I had just rigged a jighead and went and put my finger in my mouth to pull a piece of debris off my tongue (wind was kicking that day). Gulp! juice is extremely salty and it also has other flavors on it. And it does NOT come off easily.
I'm going to catch a flounder this year...... that's my goal
I've learned a lot from John Skinner. Using the jigging technique, I've never caught this many fluke as I had over the summer.

Have you ever fished inside the Raritan Bay? If so, what did you think? New Jersey and Staten Island have some interesting areas. April, May and early June for Stripers. June through August for Fluke. I like it plenty enough but I have had some really slow days in there. When the Water temps get over 65 degrees, the fish seem to leave for deeper cooler waters, making the Raritan Bay quiet after June. Love to know what your experiences have been in that region.

That's why the grub tail gulp swimming mullet are so deadly, they work themselves. Imho...
John I have a couple of questions..... I fish mostly tidal creeks here in NC, and typically shallower water that is seldom that clear. In the fluke behavior underwater video, I saw no structure. No bait. What is holding these concentration of fish in the area? Also, typically here, the more junk in the water, the better. If you aren't hanging up, you aren't catching fish. And while I catch the occasional sea Robin here, our "interference fish" tend to be oyster toads and inshore lizard fish.
There is definitely structure. The clamshells on the ground, the dips and rolls of the seafloor. There can be soft structure, or hard structure. Also, it may be that there is desirable bait in the area. There may be bunker or bloodworms or some such in that area that make things more productive. There may also be harder structure further out that the video does not show.
How fast are you drifting. Do you ever have to increase or decrease your drift speed throughout the day. If so how do you go about this, or recommend.
God these fish are so DUMB. And it makes me feel even dumber for struggling so hard to catch them

Love the videos John, but now I'm confused. I thought you said in previous videos that 1.5 mph was the "magic speed" or the "perfect speed" or something to that effect, yet here you said at 3:35-3:50 that once the drift speed gets to around 1.4 mph the water gets cloudy & the bite shuts down. Did I miss something? Thanks.
A good speed range is usually 0.5 to 1.5 for me, with my sweet spot being 1.0-1.2. The comment about having the fishing degrade around 1.5 that I mentioned in the video is for a particular spot that I fish. After watching the video I realize there's more silt on the bottom than I thought, and it stirs with the current. You don't notice it on the surface.
John, are you aware of any behavioral differences between the different Flounder types? I live in SC and ours a little different (called southern versus summer).
Yep. Summer, Southern, Gulf. Up here we have what we call Winter Flounder too. To make it more confusing the summer flounder are called Fluke from around the middle of Jersey and north.

Great video as always John! Thanks for posting! How deep were they here? Were you trolling or drifting? I think I hear a trolling motor but not sure. The reason I ask is I have a hard time getting my jig to ride along the bottom like in your video. Not touching the bottom but gliding over it. How do you know to set it at that depth without the camera?
Also, you mentioned where you were fishing, can you give me GPS coordinates so that I can look at a topo map and see how the depth is there in relation to surrounding water depths? Just want to get an idea of how these flounder are staging.

Drift, 20 feet, around 1 knot. Look for buoy 7 in Long Island Sound. Chart 12354. It's no secret.
Thanks! I see now why they were holding there at the bottom like that. It is a steep drop off near that buoy and that is what the flounder like to hold next to (drop offs). It makes it easier for me to see how they would feed in that area. Thanks again. I have learned a lot from your videos and books and am keeping good records now that I have a copy of your program Fisherslog!

Sea robin make me mad because I was on a boat with family and I got hooked up and I thought it was a big flounder but it was a sea robin well sea robin fight pretty well so it wasn't that bad just at least I was fishing I love fishing

Omar Zavala I'm not him but i know what line he uses... he uses 15 lb braid as main line then 20 lb floro but if he is around structure he uses 25 lb florocarbon
I assume that is a fluorocarbon leader? It stands out fairly well. Be cool to see the exact same video and conditions with a mono leader, just to see how much more visible it is under water..

Sea Robins showed up in the Chesapeake Bay this year. They were babies though. I hope thats a sign that more flounders are on the way. Your population of flounder is way better size and numbers.
So much has changed from the days of squid and spearing. Technique, gear and attitude. Much of which is attributed to you. At least, as the east end of the Island is concerned.
Fishing them this way is so much more fun.

Just current, but if the current and wind make for a bad drift, I'll use a trolling motor to get a 0.7-1.2 mph drift speed.

Takeaway from your findings? Bare hook with Gulp catches more fish faster; forget the jewelry. What size and pattern of hook? ... and we're good to go!

Just shows you don't catch a few of the fish in an area you catch them all. Its why inshore fishermen think they can't hurt the stock of fish but they are wrong
