  • Learn about iron deficiency anemia with anemia symptoms or signs and anemia treatment in this video!
    WHAT IS IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA:
Iron deficiency anaemia is caused by lack of iron, often because of blood loss or pregnancy. It's treated with iron tablets prescribed by a GP and by eating iron-rich foods.
Check if you have iron deficiency anaemia,
    Symptoms can include:
    • Tiredness and lack of energy
    • Shortness of breath
    • Noticeable heartbeats (heart palpitations)
    • Pale skin
Less common symptoms of iron deficiency anaemia (that are not usually connected to pregnancy) include:
    • Headaches
    • Hearing ringing, buzzing or hissing noises inside your head (tinnitus)
    • Food tasting strange
    • Feeling itchy
    • A sore tongue
    • Hair loss - you notice more hair coming out when brushing or washing it
    • Wanting to eat non-food items, such as paper or ice (pica)
    • Finding it hard to swallow (dysphagia)
    • Painful open sores (ulcers) in the corners of your mouth
    • Spoon-shaped nails
    • Restless legs syndrome
You must see your healthcare professional if you have symptoms of iron deficiency anaemia - A simple blood test will confirm if you're anaemic.
    TREATMENT OF IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA:
    Things you can do yourself:
If your diet is partly causing your iron deficiency anaemia, your healthcare professional will tell you what foods are rich in iron so you can eat more of them.
    Eat and drink more:
    • Dark-green leafy vegetables like watercress and curly kale
    • Cereals and bread with extra iron in them (fortified)
    • Meat
    • Dried fruit like apricots, prunes and raisins
    • Pulses (beans, peas and lentils)
Eat and drink less (Large amounts of these foods and drinks make it harder for your body to absorb iron):
    • Tea
    • Coffee
    • Milk and dairy
    • Foods with high levels of phytic acid, such as wholegrain cereals, which can stop your body absorbing iron from other foods and pills
You might be referred to a specialist dietitian if you're finding it hard to include iron in your diet.

This information helped, Last August I saw 6 doctors who all kept saying "It's probably Anxiety" And didn't bother doing any tests with me. my energy levels kept plummeting, my hands and feet where freezing and my heart rate was going crazy later in the day every day without fail... It was only recently I told my doctors that enough is enough and that i wanted blood tests to see why I'm feeling this way and to their surprise I was diagnosed with low Folate anaemia. I can't believe it took 8 months for a doctor here in the UK to take me seriously :/

I’ve had nearly all symptoms for some years now and they periodically get worse (more so after being taken off the combined pill 5yrs ago). This year is the worst yet. I’ve always had cold hands/feet since I was a kid. Now I have a craving for eating frozen veggies & ice, hands/feet have become worse, I can NEVER get enough sleep, I have little energy, I’ve also developed really bad pulsatile tinnitus and a rapid heart rate from doing the simplest of things.
I chose to start a POP in a bid to help my heavy periods earlier this year. As a result I bled heavily & practically constantly for nearly 6 months and had a polyp pass. It’s been a nightmare. Thankfully it’s all over now and I’m healing. But I’ve been left with these symptoms.
The doctors haven’t even considered me having anemia even though I told them DURING all of this.
So now I’m trying some liquid iron supplements to see how they make me feel. HOPEFULLY they work for me because I can’t stay living like this.

My mother said I just looked really, really pale, slept a lot, and didn't really move or function because I was so pale. I almost had to receive a blood transfusion for it, and then they eventually put me on medication that I didn't even take. Apparently, you just become really tired and pale-looking; extremely cool to the touch. Other people around me noticed it, too, and mentioned it to me. Someone asked: "Is she okay?" But yeah, apparently it's really serious.

Hi. I m having my blood test tomorrow. I went to see my GP few times already this year but they kept ignoring me. I told them something is wrong with me.
Finally after 8 months of begging them they will do the test tomorrow. Thank you for your video. I kept ignoring all those symptoms. My family and friends said to me that I must have anaemia just because I m extremely pale and I m tired etc. I never felt like this before. I even kept telling my ex boyfriend who is a doctor that something is not right and look I was even ignored by him.
So thank you, we need more people like you. 🥰❤

I’m a heterozygous carrier of the major HH gene. My hair was falling out , weak, breathless, depressed. For more than a year. I just got my labs back, iron very low, tibc just made normal, almost high, tsat was less than 10%. My D is 5 , bought me a new 50,000iu script. The D was previously treated with that dose weekly plus another 2-5,000iu daily. My newest doc has me starting oral iron every other day but my hematologist that has had my fam with HH, also heterozygous, blood let for overload when they were all over age 50, not wanting me to supplement except with just food. My dad that I inherited this from, is anemic chronically and has been transfused which gets his cbc up for a while. I’m just a 50 yr old dermatology nurse, so I didn’t worry about my symptoms until I got pretty unwell. Hair shedding gradually then really picked up. I have a bleeding hemorrhoid and wonder if having that fixed could just hault the iron situation. I have to remember that I am NOT a doctor 😂😂😂 thanks for sharing your knowledge as I have been having the iron WITH coffee. Mine includes C in it. Thanks again

I had an ovarian cyst rupture a month ago now and it was bleeding inside my ovary. My blood levels kept dropping and I was held in the ER for hours to be sure i didn’t need surgery. I didn’t.
But, I’ve been so ill since. Extremely fatigued, nauseous, and dizzy/light headed have been my main symptoms as well as loss of appetite. It’s been so hard to eat and I’ve mostly eaten rice, broth, rice cakes, and protein smoothies . If I get up too fast I get major vertigo and nearly fall over. I should’ve harassed my doctors sooner to test iron levels but I had no idea.what I don’t understand is that my blood levels are okay again. My iron binding and levels seem fine. But I have severely low ferritin levels. I’m told to take iron supplements but still it doesn’t make sense to me.

Now I really enjoy the feeling of being healthy. I am slightly anaemic at the moment so I shall be mindful to take my iron tablets for a much longer time now. Due to an inability to take orange juice and also my having been operated on in my abdomen I can only take them with meals.

I just got diagnosed with this & never made the connection that I have this weird constant intense craving for rice cakes that I can't seem to break. I've actually mentioned this issue to 2 doctors but they just kind of shrug & don't know. This is first I've heard of weird cravings & the connection to anemia & am hopeful maybe treating my anemia will also stop the crazy craving.

Thank you for the responses. I kept asking my doctor if it was a form of pica & I think you are right! It was!! I've now completed 5 iron transfusions & the interesting part is, within hours after I got my first iron transfusion, all the cravings completely vanished & even the idea of eating a rice cake has sounded nauseating ever since. I'm convinced there was a direct correlation with my anemia.
Very interesting that a few others have mentioned rice cakes!

I have iron deficiency anemia, I did all the investigation, My Hb is 8.4 , no blood disorder only moderate G6PD, already I am following the diet . My vit D level also ( 5 ). I have all the symptoms, but it's increasing during my period. In fact, I think that the reason for my anemia is because of my heavy period. Can I take ferosac injections instead of iron tabs? I feel tired most of the day .
