I was unable to absorb Iron for years until a pharmacist pointed out that Iron requires vitamin C to be absorbed. Also she said to never drink Coffee within several hours of taking my vit C/iron therapy. After trying her recommendation my blood tests turned completely around. Also, Broccoli has both vit C & iron.
My mother has been anemic since she was a teenager 70+ years ago. She had even had blood transfusions for it. I finally got her on Keto/Carnivore (Mostly), with lots of red meat. She had a follow up with her doc, and they said her iron was well into the normal range (It has always been low before). They told her to quit taking the supplements (which always cause her stomach issues) and they would check it again in 3 months.
When I was a child, I had acute glomerulonephritis. I recovered, but had anemia afterwards. The doctor recommended an iron capsule. After one dose, I refused it because it hurt my stomach (after Mom noticed iron granules in flower pots). The doctor said I could eat raisins and liver. At the next visit, he admitted he had tried that iron pill and it made him very sick. It was satisfying to hear that!
This was very very helpful because i always loved liver that how my family knew when i was pregnant again but can hardly find it in my area now that i am older 😢
This is so true! In Tibetan Buddhism it is desired - NOT required - that followers be vegetarian. If anyone, including the monks and nuns, requires meat or animal products for their genuine health needs, then they MUST eat those meats and animal products - they are required to look after their physical and mental needs, in order to look after themselves, and their families if they have them, and be able to do their religious practices (which often require physical and mental alertness and endurance).
I started eating alot of beets, sweet potatoes, spinach, kale, pineapple, and one time iron infusion and went from 7.2 to 13.2 within 3 mos. Happy camper!!😃😃😃
This was a very respectful and helpful video. As a pescatarian who has struggled with iron absorption all my life, I really really appreciate your considerate approach to people like myself who need help on this front. You're a wonderful man. Love and light to you.
@@Livingtabitha pescatarian aside, I'm just one of those types whose body has always had a hard time absorbing iron. all of the girls in my family line are borderline anemic, despite what diet they subscribe to.
This is the most respectful advice I have seen, as a non animal eater. I have been plagued with iron deficiency anemia all my life. Nothing has worked, but now I know why. I will try therapeutic additions to my diet. I can't thank you enough, because you have eased my heart and feelings that sometimes you must amend your eating to correct your health and wellness.
I’ve been vegetarian/vegan for 21 years and feeling awful awful awful lately. I was super craving meat and ate it for a couple weeks. Felt amazing. Then the guilt kicked in. I went to the doctor yesterday and I’m severely anemic. Terrible absorption too. Sooooo….omg heme-iron here I come. Thank you for this video.
@ No. I was vegetarian/often vegan for over 20 years and truly feel it helped me stay young. It was what I needed at the time and maybe one day my body will be ok with it again. Right now I am healing in other ways and meat is part of that for now. Since childhood I had an aversion to eating animals because I am an AVID animal lover. But for now I have to also take care of my body in the ways it’s showing up.
Thanks for the great video. I was drinking tea and unknowingly blocked 70% of iron absorption for years. I was drinking a gallon of tea per day and drinking it with all my meals. I have learned that coffee will also block 38% if the iron absorption if drank within 2 hours of meals. I still drink tea and coffee, but not within 2 hours before or after meals.
Hi i have heard in some videos, drink coffee an hour before or two hours after, i have been doing this 😢 before or after my iron rich meals or supplement, what is best to do please. I have very low ferritin levels on 7. Thank you
I was having trouble with iron deficiency due to heavy periods... beef liver saved my life!! Not only I felt great but greatly improved my period overall!! I love carnivore!!
@@Xzyu2 Birth control causes more harm than good, look into it! If you have heavy periods that's estrogen dominance which is from weakened thyroid from eating the SAD diet (standard american diet) by her eating red meat it will beef up her B vitamins and heal her body now and long term as this will heal the thyroid which heals the estrogen dominance which heals endometriosis.
I am also suffering with heavy periods since 22 years and iron deficiency. The doctors prescribed me iron pills. No diet advice. But I am a bit scared to eat animal liver, isn't the liver full of toxins?

It's not taken seriously - I bet your friend was told all the initial symptoms were stress or in the head - this is debilitating deficiency and should be treated seriously.
@Sonja Walker I know the feeling, often broke down crying thinking I'd never feel better - doctors dismissed me for over a year as it being PTSD or psychogenic - found another doctor who finally said your iron is only 6 - always seek a different opinion even if some doctors humiliate you. Definitely need to make people aware of this - I hope your feeling better and get your quality of life back!! 💞💞💞
I donate blood 4 or more times a year. They check your iron level and if it's to low you can't donate. Monday my iron was 15, .... good enough to donate and I got a t-shirt !
I donated blood then found out I wasn’t absorbing iron from the bloodstream. Only Hemoglobin or Hematocrit are checked by a blood center before you donate. There are tests to know if you’re actually absorbing into the cells.
They are checking hemoglobin not iron. It’s very deceiving because they tell you they are checking iron. I got into donating blood multiple time s a year. This eventually tanked my iron and ferritin levels. I feel like crap from what I be is low ferritin of 19. Get a full iron panel done before donating.
I’ve been on Keto program for 12 weeks. Just had blood work. My numbers were great especially A1C which was 6.4 from 10.2. Also lost 36 lbs. BUT my hemoglobin was a little low. SO glad you did a video on this!! I was just eating chicken and some beef. Adding seafood. I eat a bunch of eggs.
I took lansoprazole - PPI - for 20 years. Im iron deficient for the past few years. I stopped taking PPIs about 9 months ago but my iron is still low. Ive had numerous tests to look for cancer, blood loss etc, all negative. I really appreciate the information you have provided here and will take on board all that you have said.
I have read many books, I listened to many TH-cam videos by many of the world's leading gurus and health experts but nothing came close to the hidden herbs by anette ray. I recommend everyone giving it a read.
Dr. Barry, I am so glad I watched your video. I had a food sensitivity test done about a month ago and went on a restricted diet and I have been eating A LOT of meat. I got my ferritin tested yesterday and it went from 18 to 38 in a month. This never happens to me unless I get iron infusions. I also stopped drinking coffee and chocolate. I’ve gone legume, seed and nut free. I was so happy to see my ferritin levels improving through diet. I’ve been deficient for many years. I’ve had numerous tests and nothing has worked until now. I realize how little meat I used to eat before. Now I’m starting to eat chicken liver! Thanks for your videos!

...🌱🪴🌷last year, discontinued iron supplements due to side affects and fear of iron overload; I get my haem iron from meat, seafood, eggs, goat cheese, etc.; I feel great.
@@donnayoung9215 ...🌱🪴🌷Oh this is a long one: Did you consult your doctor before you went on the Carnivore Diet - yes or possibly not; and if you did he/she may not have approved - yet you could always stop this diet if it doesn’t work out, right; same goes with any supplement; should ‘you’ decide to discontinue iron supps. in the interim - make note of your well-being (do you feel better or worse either way, you could stop or go back on the full dosage or even a reduced dosage); in my opinion, your dosage is very high especially on the Carnivore Diet; look, doctors are not always on point - mine is not; also keep in mind, if you menstruate you have blood loss or if you have internal blood loss (or Both), Iron is important in your diet; also, your body may poorly absorb iron supplements and do better with meat, seafood, eggs; and just a suggestion, you could even ween your iron dosage if you feel weary; (I quit cold Turkey and never felt better - and even on the darn Iron supps, my Doc still labeled me as anaemic - guess am a poor absorber of iron supps.); on the other hand, too much iron (iron overload): zero blood loss, high iron supp. dosage, and Carnivore Diet should be a cause for concern for anyone; and as you may know, the downside - excess iron builds up in the body - is stored in the ‘liver’ and other places in the body - only way to get rid of the excess iron is via regular blood donation; we all have doctors but sometimes, like in my case, I have to be my own doctor; look, it’s your life - it’s your health, so you gotta do what’s best for you; take care.
@Sonja Walker I got off it for a week then started back today because I was starting to feel tired again and that scared me. I was bleeding spotting for 18 days due to the fibroid I'm assuming so I started the iron back I eat 2 meals mostly beef and liver my levels did go up I had my blood checked before I went off it . It's just hard to know what to do. So I'm back on the iron ugh lol
My iron level is 2 and hemaglobin is 6. Low blood pressure and an elevated heart rate mostly above 130 to 140. I started infusions this week, I do have very low absorption. I have started to eat more meat and eggs and I am having lotsa beetroot with all of my meals. I was told to have a blood transfusion 3 pints but I refused and started a new journey with infusions and eating iron rich meals. I hope to get well soon, I miss just walking and being able to breathe!!!
I’m in the same boat! My Ferritin is a 9… 😣 I have probably been anemic my entire life. My Naturopath has me taking Floradix as an iron supplement to help get my numbers up. I do eat grass fed beef liver and eggs, so I’m not sure why I’m anemic… 😑 How are you now??
For years I dealt with anemia and sometimes I thought it wasn’t a big deal until it became a big deal. Now I take iron medication every day. I make sure I eat food that has iron in it and other healthy benefits. We have to take care of our bodies we really do.
Iron requires vit C as well as copper for absorption. My ferritin level was 5, and I have never felt as bad! Ever! I have given up coffee and tea since the tannins they contain interfere with iron absorption. I also take an iron supplement daily and am gradually feeling better. People with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (as I have) are prone to anemia interestingly. The dietary restrictions don’t help; and if one has a beef sensitivity, there is an added difficulty to get enough dietary iron. However, our bodies were made to heal themselves if given the correct assist. Don’t get discouraged!
anyway now I am carnivore for 2 years and do not have this problem anymore. I almost died before finding this diet. I thank Dr. Berry every day for being a straight up guy just selling the message and not trying to cash in fast by overselling this simple home based diet! thank you! Thank you!
You’re lucky, I wish I could have stayed carnivore. It was so easy to manage. But I had 24/7 diarrhea from only eating meat, I had to stop. My intestines don’t absorb the fat. Even with lean meat I had the same response
Doc, thanks so much for this informative video about iron deficiency and how to repair it. This video provides so many answers to my health crises. I am plagued with dizziness, shortness of breath, thinning hair, bald hair patches, and tiredness. I am so grateful I got to watch this eye-opening video.
I was severely anaemic about 5 years ago. I read up about absorption of iron and vitamin C really helps this. I made sure to eat vitamin C with every meal, whether it heme or non-heme and later discovered that I had managed to get my iron levels back to normal within 2 months which is unusual. I was scolded (that's how she came across at the time 😁) initially by my Doctor after she showed my blood test results and diagnosed me, asking how I didn't realise I was anaemic, as I was at the level that she had referred patients to hospital for blood transfusions. I had been getting on with life, and a lot of stresses for years and didn't realise I was ill until I experienced shooting pains from my left arm, through my chest to my right arm. That was when I rang to request an appointment and was given an urgent appointment, not realising that my body was giving me warning signs. I would definitely emphasise that people take vitamin C or eat meals that contain vitamin C. A really good dish that helped boost my iron levels was slow-cooked homemade chilli-con- carne, as beans contain iron, tomatoes, vitamin C, and fresh parsley, coriander and basil (which I added) also contain non-heme and vitamin C. Spices and herbs such as chilli powder also contain iron and some vitamin C. I had read on occasion that vitamin C helps combat the effects on phytic acid with regards to iron absorption. I would also say too, that if any females reading this, are experiencing heavy periods, whether lengthy or not, to request they are checked for uterine fibroid too, as they can cause unusually heavy blood flows. I had gone to a previous doctors surgery about 7 years prior to this, mentioned to a nurse that I was experiencing heavy and longer periods. I had just hit my 40's and she told me "that's normal for women in their 40s". It isn't. I had been walking around with this for some time.
I have issues absorbing iron and I eat anything and everything, when hungry, I didn’t know the vitamin C trick, did you take vitamin-C as pills or just from foods. I’ve seen doctors and it’s like opening a pandora box, they find all source of issues but I haven’t seen good results with their treatments.
@@titorj4498 Hi, Sorry, I have only just seen your question. OK, well, when I was severely anaemic, I didn't take vitamin C tablets. It was down to researching it all myself because I wanted to understand how iron absorption worked and food levels etc. I just added foods with Vitamin C. If you go online and Google e.g "vitamin C in orange" say, there are nutritional sites that give estimates of vitamin C/100g of food. You can also search "Foods high in Vitamin C" (and do this for iron too)and there are websites that throw out info. If you eat everything and anything, then you need to look closer at your diet. If you are eating, say, a lot of foods with calcium in, such as cheese, or drinking milk, or you drink a lot of tea or coffee, there are iron absorption inhibitors in these particular foods and beverages. Anything containing caffeine usually has these. I can't remember the names of them off the top of my head, at the moment. Beans are loaded with non-heme iron, especially chickpeas/garbanzo (I'm in the UK so we tend to call them chickpeas) but they also have compounds in them that can prevent iron absorption into the body, so I always include food containing Vitamin C in the meal, where I can, to help the iron levels. I was a never a big meat eater which didn't help because the body accesses heme iron much easier and doesn't need vitamin C to help that along. Even with meat, I accompany that with food containing vitamin C. There are loads of vegetables that contain Vitamin C but if you eat a lot then maybe load your plate up with those. I also cover the vegetables with Extra Virgin Olive Oil so they do not taste dry, as that is strictly non dairy. I steam the vegetables too, as this keeps the flavour in, and steamed food hold nutrients more than boiling. It's a very healthy way of cooking. You can buy cheap electric steamers as well as hob steamers, that are really easy to use. If you tend to reach for food items containing pastry, pasta /white flour - then try to cut this out too, as they block iron. There are some grains such as bulgar wheat, that contain iron, lentils contain iron. Pulses and grains that are unprocessed contain iron. There is a lot to possibly cut out or minimise with diet. When I was severely anaemic, I cut everything out that I knew obstructed iron absorption. By the way, this was while I was taking a high dosage of iron tablet but it sped the process up of getting back to normal levels extremely quickly. My GP was shocked at how quickly I had managed to get my levels back to normal. I also - on occasion ate dark chocolate - the highest cocoa percentage I could find - because I was missing the treats but I made sure not to eat loads and to eat a piece of citrus fruit before. Dark chocolate and cocoa is loaded with iron and other essential nutrients, electrolytes etc but it also contains a compound that they are still questioning might "lock" the iron in from the body, so I ALWAYS ate citrus fruit before tucking into the chocolate and I wonder whether that helped, because it definitely didn't hinder it. I hope that helps. A lot of the dark green leaved herbs contain iron too, so that is also a good way to make a meal taste more interesting but up the iron a little bit more. Another food I ate, which everybody I have told, has always turned their noses up and looked like they were going to gag at the thought of it, was oats (in porridge), not processed in any way. I would add water, would NEVER add milk, to boil them. They are high in iron, and I would either add orange pieces or sliced strawberries berries to it (for the vitamin C)... or when I had days where I felt I couldn't handle lower flavour, I would put some raspberry or strawberry jam into it and mix it in, but I would NEVER add milk. Sugar (I think brown, rather than white, but not 100% sure whether white does or not, so best look that up) is said to increase iron absorption too, but obviously don't eat too much of it - keep it to natural sugars within the fruit itself if you can most of the time. Over time, I noticed that my taste buds adapted to natural foods more anyway, and I could taste the natural sugars and flavours more intensely when I cut out added sugar from my diet. Just a side note: I have "Vitamin C and Iron" tablets now that I buy from Holland & Barrett in the UK. I always have these on standby now, for days where I realise I haven't eaten much iron high, foods. I got these because the vitamin C is combined. And I just remembered, nuts contain iron too, so if you can eat those, then add those to your diet. They are nice as snacks, and they have other health benefits - almonds and pistachios are a favourite of mine... and cashews. Also beef, pork (this also contains Vitamin D - there is research emerging now, linking low D levels to low iron levels too), liver (chicken liver is high in iron. I think that it might be that pork is higher too. There's two particular livers that are loaded with iron but you have to be careful to not eat too much due to the Vitamin A levels in it as it can be dangerous eating too much vitamin A), chicken (especially thigh meat), eggs, although the white contains an iron inhibitor, so best to eat vitamin C food to accompany this - watercress and rocket/arugula with poached egg is really tasty with some lemon (add a slice to the) water, seafood & fish contains Iron.
@@happyhands117 don’t worry, and thank you so much for taking the time and explaining and all important info, I really appreciate. I like eating nuts and almonds all the time. Thanks 🙏.
@@happyhands117 thank you for this vast and useful information. I have been struggling with iron deficiencies for years and my hair has thinned out drastically because of it.
I had iron deficiency anemia since I was 10. 40 years later I learned that parasites use your iron to survive. So if you have anemia you should get checked for parasites using non traditional stool testing before supplementing as you would just be feeding the parasites. I had gotten bit by ticks frequently growing up. 6 days of Alinia and it’s now been 3 1/2 years since I had anemia without taking any supplements.
@@marianev559 ALINIA® for Oral Suspension (patients 1 year of age and older) and ALINIA Tablets (patients 12 years and older) are indicated for the treatment of diarrhea caused by Giardia lamblia (a parasite responsible for a contagious form of diarrhea) or Cryptosporidium parvum (a parasite that cannot survive without a host that commonly causes an opportunistic infection in immunocompromised hosts).
Thank you Dr berry ! I’m A vegan- Vegetarian and I am adding eggs and some fish to my diet. I was diagnosed with severe anemia. I supplement with iron tablets, but they don’t seem to help and I can’t tolerate the stomach side effects from the 325 mg over-the-counter take 36 mg. Iron !
My mother use to eat bags of red dirt. She made us kids go to a hillside to get it for her and she would dry it and eat it. Now, I think she had low iron. My iron is SO LOW right now, my doctor warned me that he was going to send me to a specialist to see if I have blood loss. He has given me three months to improve by taking my iron supplement. I am taking with vitamin C. My craving is not ice, but I eat tubs of Feta cheese blocks. It has a consistency of dirt. I told my last doctor and and it blew over her head which is why I have this new doctor. Seems to be doing a decent job.
The doctor told no lies. I had a blood transfusion January 2019. I am pernicious anemic. You are always tired, at times feel dizzy, and may lose hair. I never took it serious until after my blood transfusion. Food’s definitely helped with my intake.
I’ve had IDA for several years as a result of multiple duodenum and liver surgeries to remove stones. I’ve had transfusions in the past but currently am getting a B12 injection monthly to help me retain iron. Seems to be working because I haven’t needed a transfusion in 18 months and my test numbers are very good.
Just got diagnosed with Iron deficient anemia. No wonder I’ve been tired. Dizzy with blurry vision. Restless legs. Grooves in my nails. Bruising easily. Etc. 🤦♀️.
@PinkieJoJo I just had a consultation today with the infusion center, she told me I need an iron infusion. Which I can't wait to get I been taking iron pills and I still feel awful
OMG SAME!!!! Diagnosed with “asthma” too, which Dr’s only want to put me on injectable meds for… 😒 I have started a liquid iron supplement to get my numbers up, and then I will maintain with beef liver. I purchase grass fed beef liver from a local farmer, but have not been consistent with this every day. I need to be because anemia also causes loss of appetite! Never knew this!!
I’m fighting iron-deficiency anemia. I’ve been eating spinach with everything and my iron levels have still dropped. Thanks for educating me concerning absorption of non-heme and heme iron!

@@r.williams8725 Thanks but I have gone back to eating beef and my iron levels have jumped from zero (literally) to 65 !!! 15 points above the lowest normal result. It’s changed my life. Back to my 2019 normal health before I cut out beef. Everybody tells you how bad it is for you so…… (Although my cholesterol was normal and I have no issues with my heart.) Had no idea that was the issue. It cost me tens of thousands of dollars in medical costs and a doctor on TH-cam cured me!
I have been about 95% to 98% carnivore (I still have 1 cup of black coffee every morning...) for about 9 months now. I felt great but, I added 1oz raw grass-fed beef liver to my diet everyday and what a difference that has made!! I also consume most of my egg yolks raw as well. They are a dip for my bacon.. I must say that I feel better than I have felt in 20 years.
Any recipe suggestions for beef liver? I am recovering from an emergency appendectomy and my hemoglobin is low and I’ve been fighting low iron for a while. I doing carnivore/keto a few months ago and it has made a big difference in my skin, especially my scalp.
I've been struggling with low iron for a few years. Iron supplements were prescribed by my doctor. I was constipated and after taking the iron pills for 6 months no changes in my blood work. Your absolutely right about getting your iron through meat. Thank you so much for confirming exactly what I'm going through. Great video!
Wow Dr. Berry! This was a good one. I have become anemic every time I’ve tried to go completely vegan or vegetarian. Most recently, Dr.’s couldn’t “Figure out” why I was losing my hair, except for that my iron stores were low, etc. Now I know why, and what to do about it. It’s a wake up call, thanks so much!
Went keto while pregnant and my iron went from an 11.2 to a 9.7 in six weeks. My midwife said I need to eat vitamin C rich plant foods. Feeling pretty dismayed because I've been anemic for a decade, since I was vegetarian. All the talk from Dr. Berry had me thinking upping my beef, butter, and egg consumption would solve all my problems but it hasn't helped my anemia.
Vegan lifestyle came close to killing me. Tired but unable to sleep, gasping for breath and general weakness. It had gotten to the point that I was unable to stay conscious. Mid sentence or just walking would find me on the ground, luckily no concussions. A terrified trip to the emergency room,at the beginning of the Covid craze, 5 days in the hospital, countless probing tests and three blood transfusions later , I’m no longer a vegan but can sleep without ringing in my ears and run up flights of stairs without stopping or fainting. For reasons still unknown, my body could not tolerate a vegan diet.
The original comment just might be closer to become truth than we realize. Governments are trying like hell to limit access to healthy meat and animal products. If the backers and pushers of the vegan movement keep getting their way, their momentum will continue to snowball and sooner or later their agenda of eliminating meat consumption will start to become reality. In future decades it might just be possible that you’d need to get some sort of “permission” to acquire healthfully raised products from animals. If you can get any at all.
Beware if you find you are prescribed folic acid as it is known to increase appetite. Be sure to stock up on healthy fiber to keep you feeling full longer. Otherwise, you could find yourself grazing throughout the day into the night. I hope you have blessed health asap. ☮️💖🙏
I had blood draws to discover I was low iron anemic. The ferritin level was at 7, which the hematologist said indicates low storage of iron. Oddly enough, I started taking acid reducer in October and my levels plummeted. In February I had iron infusion and am taking copper and zinc supplement and stopped taking acid reducer. Thank goodness I’m feeling so much better 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
@@mimiohnine Acid reducers such as omeprazole which I was taking can make it harder for your body to absorb iron. I weaned myself off them and went keto. In six months my ferritin level went from 15 to 30. Previous to this despite my best efforts I had only managed a minimal increase.
@@pennypearson7096 I really think Dr Berry has it spot on with the acid reducers blocking iron absorption. The more we know the better we can care for our bodies 😊😊 I’m glad you are on the mend!!
Bingo! Ding ding ding! Mystery solved. Thank you, Dr. Berry. I've been chewing on ice for months and while I recognized it was anemia. I thought I just wasn't eating enough iron. After listening to your video, I think it's the proton pump inhibitors! I've been weaning myself off of them (thanks to your ACV video) but I've been on them for years. I've had gastritis at times and never thought I could do it, but I'm almost there. My kidneys thank you. I'm also getting back to a ketogenic diet again after being off of it for about a year. Thank you for doing these videos.
Sure would have been nice if all the doctors I saw during my iron deficiency anemia had explained this. My guess is they weren’t listening to me when I told them I was eating 3 pounds of ice daily. All the doctors advised me to take iron supplements and didn’t recommend iron found in foods. My primary doctor prescribed Prevacid for me which made my anemia worse and I gained 25 pounds while taking this drug. After having 10 sessions of iron infusions and dumping all my doctors, I discovered keto/IF on my own and lost 100 pounds improved my GERD and feel great. Thanks Dr. Berry for all your great information. You are saving and improving people’s lives. ❤️❤️❤️
Do you still eat ice? I struggle with anemia but I enjoy the ice. I’ve been eating carnivore (only a couple weeks) and realized I think my iron is low again. I drink a lot of tea and wonder if that is sabotaging all my efforts. I crave ice so ever giving it up feels like a lost battle. It’s more like an addiction. I can stop. I don’t want to stop. I need some hope here…
I've suffered with Iron Deficiency for years. The first thing I did was cut out lactose. That brought my iron count up to the bottom of the normal range. I then cut gluten out of my diet. My Iron levels shot through the roof.
I have read that about dairy and gluten. I wonder why that is?! I cut out dairy and gluten about a month ago just because I had a feeling they were contributing to my asthma exacerbations. I do feel a tiny bit better but this SUX!! I love my raw dairy that I get from a local farm and I love my sourdough starter. Neither one I can have. Hopefully one day when my iron normalizes and hope I can slowly try and add these things back in… 😑😔 Taking a liquid iron supplement right now recommended by my Naturopath called Floradix. Says it doesn’t cause constipation. Only started it two days ago so we will see. I also eat grass fed beef liver and eggs that I get from a local farm, so not sure why I’m anemic.. 😣
@@leannshort2211 I totally agree it sucks. It's even driving my wife nuts. But then as you feel better, you go through a mental change. Those things just lost their desire. When I tried to re-introduce dairy, my stomach cramped straight away so it was a dead giveaway that it was a trigger. Make sure you have enough vitamin C and D. maybe even take a big dose of both to give things a kick. They're both safe at even 10x the RDA for a quick boost. Also make sure you're getting enough salt - the body uses the chloride to make stomach acid which you need to digest the iron. Good luck and all the best.
@@JasonKaler Wow yes, I agree once feeling better I probably wouldn’t care lol! Yes, good advice on the C and D vitamins and salt too! I take a little pinch of good salt,(meaning non iodized) like Celtic with my water throughout the day, helps the water get into the cells for better hydration. I had read the vit C helps the iron absorb and I have been taking vit D3&K2 for a year or more. My vit D levels are good, I had that tested in Oct at the same time my iron was. Have you ever tried raw milk? It definitely sits better with people who are sensitive to lactose and casein. I hope to eventually add it back in, maybe when my iron is stabilized. And even then I’ll start very small, like a tsp at time for a while so my body can get used to it again. Raw milk is truly a super food. I just hope to smell and taste again. Haven’t been able to since getting C in April 2021! Every once in a while I’ll get a whiff of something and sometimes it will last for a few hours. So I know my olfactory does indeed still work lol. Thank you for your reply. Best to you also. Merry Christmas! 🎄
I love meat but I just can’t do liver. I have goiter, hypo, since I was 18 (hypo) now 61 and the dr just told me I needed iron. I actually feel so much better after being on iron meds for just 2 weeks. Thanks for your videos❤❤❤😊
I had debilitating anemia before being diagnosed with Celiac. I would eat 6 glasses of ice per day, I would crave it constantly. I'm so glad this is all behind me now.
@@colinthomson5358 Well it was very gradual! It all started when I decided to chew on ice randomly after drinking a glass of cold water and I found it surprisingly satisfying so I just kept eating the ice every time I was served a beverage with it. After a few months I found myself craving ice alone and decided to eat it directly from my fridge ice machine, many times a day. I honestly didn't really question it but my cravings for ice were very intense, I'd imagine it would feel similar to crave a cigarette or any other addictive substances. I remember being so annoyed when other people weren't eating the ice in their drinks around me, I'd often ask my friends and family to give me their ice cubes cause I just needed more. Nothing else would satisfy me the way ice did, and I tried eating ice cream, sorbet, even snow lol. Thankfully it all went away after a few weeks of iron supplements but I still sometimes miss it, though I don't crave it anymore.
I’m currently dealing with low iron and have been experiencing all those symptoms, including breathlessness. It’s so debilitating! I’m now using supplements, but I know my diet is certainly lacking. I’m making changes, including eating more vitamin-C rich foods, which aids in the absorption of iron. Thanks so much for sharing this information for those who need it!
Thank you for this video. I did a blood test general health panel and came back with low iron, iron binding capacity, AND transferrin levels. This video was helpful.
Thank you! This informed me that my eating ice is a symptom of Pika because of my anemia (hereditary). And I have to confirm that when I eat liver, which I really love, I feel way better. This video has helped me because now I'm switching my eating habit to get most of my iron intake from an animal source.
Thank you for this information my 12yr daughter is suffering from low iron due to unfound excessive menstruation bleeding. Blood work getting done right now. I'm a carnivore diet so i feel blessed !
I didn’t turn a corner in my anemia until I started eating more red meat. I’m finally within a normal range and am still working on gaining a few more ferritin points.
@Sonja Walker have you looked at your consumption of other minerals that support iron levels like copper? I’m going to try to incorporate more copper containing foods. Check out the Mineral Fix book.
@@dionnelatham4401 check vitamins D3 always take K2 with it. Magnesium Glycinate….malate in evenings. Copper helps absorption of iron. Electrolytes is very important for magnesium potassium and helps absorption. Read up on deficiency of these minerals. Remember cofactors to take and Vit C with iron also. Don’t want imbalances.
You could have a fibroid if you have long and heavy periods. I experienced the same, became severely anaemic and was later diagnosed with a fibroid. A lot of women have them but don't always realise due to no symptoms. It might be worth getting checked.
@@happyhands117 Hi. What treatment have you done in treating your fibroid? I've been suffering from anemia due to heavy bleeding because of fibroid. My fibroid is 7cm now.
@@YvetteDyanne if it’s small enough you could try green tea extract 800mg, and vitamin d to help shrink it . Those two have studies that show it works. Obviously a clean diet. No grains sugar or dairy. Fibroids love sugar and estrogen. Lots of cruciferous veggies to help get rid of the extra estrogen that’s feeding the fibroid. Eat foods that make you poop regularly bc fibroids happen from toxic buildup in the bowels. Lose some weight if you’re overweight because we store estrogen in our fat. Make sure to eat organ meats like liver, heart, etc to build up iron and b vitamins lost through heavy bleeding. There are other things to try but this is a good place to start if you are hesitant to get surgery and want to try to heal on your own.
This is a fantastic video but it addresses iron ingestion and education (heme vs non heme and therapeutic meats)- I would add that Vit C is what will also be required to address (an actual) absorption problem . Also the role of magnesium and copper should be reviews in helping w iron Absorption.
Thankyou 🙏 Your discussion on this topic, is just what I needed to here...having been vegan for 2 yrs, then vegetarian, Ive started eating some fish and hope to have more energy. I try to source my food from ethical farmers, but at the end of the day, I need to care for my health, especially as im 66 and love to be a Nan that runs around with Grandchildren in a park... Thankyou again for sharing. Will now follow you 😊
I saw some research that indicated iron absorption is enhanced with good intestinal bacteria. After eating high-fiber and other foods to help feed the good gut bugs, my aerobic (running) performance seemed enhanced, even without a lot of meat in my diet. Getting heme iron (with added vitamin C for absorption) has always been my go-to way to keep iron levels up.
64 year old male just diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia. Hemoglobin is 7.2. Going in for iron infusion and other tests. Told my doctor I have good days and bad days and she was surprised I have any good days being that low
My hubby had a iron level of 7 mcg and 2ng of ferritin and a hemoglobin level of 4 no doctor told him what to eat just gave him iron pills i researched foods high in iron and the difference between heme and non heme . Wr just killed a hog so i fixed him the kidney heart and liver and made a mousse from it and he has been eating it . Plus steak, and other meats but mostly liver we go back next month to get his levels checked but he feels a ton better already.
My iron was always “fine” even tho I was exhausted Checked my ferritin FINALLY, guess what? All those decades being told I’m fine! It was at 11 before I found out about lactoferrin. Miracle supplement.
@@alesiadwyer was using Jarrow IronSorb with lactoferrin They quit making it Now I have to buy the lactoferrin separately, just ordered some (Jarrow again) so I’ll see how it works. I don’t take it much more than a bottle a yr as I have no way to get tested now so I don’t want to take iron if I don’t need it. That’s bad to be high in iron also! If you have ins so u can be monitored you’ll be fine.
Your information is very. very important for me because I chew little blocks of ice a lot and get tired and shortness of breath whenever I walk like a short block so now I am going to eat a lot of heme iron to get my iron.Thank you very much Dr.❤️
Thank you. This video has made me realize that I’m most likely suffering from iron deficiency. I found out I’m intolerant to eggs and I stopped eating them about 8 months ago. Before that, I ate eggs every day of my life.
Dr. Berry, I think I just found my daughters issue after about 6 yrs of no answers. She has been through sooo many test, even seen a pediatric cardiologist for heart palpitations and chest pain and wore a heart monitor. She gets light headed a lot, she has spells where she feels like she's floating, she hates that feeling, has shortness of breath and is pale. No answers from Drs. You think this would have been simple to figure out. I think this anemia has been her problem all along! I had her in the ER last wk (4.3 cmm ovarian cyst). They didn't say anything about her bloodwork to me, only handed her a script for an opioid that we refused. 🙄 I was looking at her bloodwork results this morning on mychart and it says she mildly anemic. After researching I think this has been her problem all along. She had bloodwork back in April and looking at it, a CBC was not done, only blood glucose and a metabolic panel. They dropped the ball!
Of course they did, they always do!!! I’m so glad more people are researching for themselves!! I have been too and finally figured out what has been ailing me for, probably all my life but chronically for the past 4 years! Turns out C can really drain your iron stores and I have all these symptoms with the “asthma” being the worst! I hope your daughter is on her way to better health. I believe my children are also anemic, and will be starting them on beef liver soon. I get mine from a local farmer and I chop it up into tiny pieces and swallow it down whole and chase it with water. I haven’t been doing this consistently so maybe that’s why I’m still anemic. 😣
The term "therapeutic meat" is covertly powerful. Language and terminology hold so many people captive from living healthy lives, namely those who choose not to consume "soft fluffy animals". Great presentation.
you can choose to eat meat e.g a grass fed cow which will feed a hell of a lot of people, or you can choose to eat vegan crops and be solely responsible for hundreds or even thousands of animals dying just to grow your individual diet alone.
@wnc817 Thats exactly right. 2-3 years is a pretty decent long life by cows standards, eating grass, drinking water and looking around, maybe having a bit of sex and having a baby too. They also come out almost fully grown. People compare them to human standards where our stimulus level is 10000x that of a cow, we arent even fully grown for 21+ years. Im sure that the strong majority of living creatures given a choice would rather live for a few years than not at all, but thats a typical modern day way of thinking, doing what feels right but being ignorant to all the people it negatively impacts.
Please Hemoglobin 13 Iron 9 Ferritin 16 Should I take iron supplements ? My doctor said no But i feel very very tired and dizzy Thank you very much for your time and your help
One question I have in watching this superb video concerns eggs: Is the iron in eggs in the white or the yolk or both. I have high cholesterol and rarely eat the yolk. Now let me say that hands down this is the most reliable, convincing, and science-based presentation about iron I have seen. He is an M.D. which I like. Dr. Ken tells us what kind we need to treat iron deficiency anemia. Where it is found. I learned that iron supplements are not the way to go. At least he does not indicate any such that are worthwhile. All the iron supplements I've encountered, including those from great companies like New Chapter and Garden of Life, are plant-based, that is, non-heme iron. Not what we need.
..but fortunately eating cholesterol doesn't actually raise your blood levels, and your cholesterol levels are likely less important than perviously thought. ...but if you want to try a supplement, try Shaklee Iron + C. It isn't sold in stores, but you can buy it online. I honestly don't really love the company, but this is the only iron supplement I have ever heard of that doesn't cause upset stomach or constipation. My digestive system is a wreck, and I am just starting carnivore, but I take this iron every day (heavy peroods and history of anemia). No constipation, because it actually absorbs -- and when I had a hemoglobin finger prick test at my 6 week postartum visit, my hemoglobin level was an astonishing 14. (Anemic is below 10.) The nurse-midwife almost fell over. She had never seen such a result on a postpartum woman. I have recommended this to others as well, and they, too, have found it uncommonly gentle and effective.
I had it years ago and then had a total hysterectomy. I thought since I was done with periods that I wouldn’t have to worry about it. I was wrong. I passed out in October and fell down my stairs. Apparently my hemoglobin was dangerously low.
Chicken hearts and clams are the highest source of heme iron. 1 cup of chopped chicken hearts cooked has double the amount of iron than any liver. Chicken liver has more iron than beef liver. Consuming a lot of chicken hearts lowers your risk of having vitamin A toxicity. My problem is is extremely heavy monthly periods 😢 that is causing iron deficiency.
I was a carnivore for over a year and suddenly saw my blood protein level drop below normal. This was simultaneously happening during Keytruda infusions. I was warned my thyroid would be destroyed but nothing was said about my pancreas. Since digestive enzymes are made in the pancreas, I corrected my protein level as well as RBC, hemoglobin and hematocrit levels by taking the enzymes. 🎉😊🎉👍🥩🥓🥚
Thank you for this informative video on iron deficiency. I have always had an iron deficiency, its genetic since other members in my family suffer from this as well. Since I began the Keto diet my iron levels have improved. LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!
Iron deficiency is not a genetic issue. There may be a weakness in the body that runs in the family but it doesn't mean everyone's iron deficiency is genetic. There is smething going on under the surface that's causing it and it's not genetics.
Great information - very clear and helpful, thank you. I don't think I am anaemic as such (bloods look ok) but I do have a history of low ferritin levels and currently have all the symptoms except Pica. Going to have a Echocardiogram in a few weeks (I'm in Scotland) to check out a slight murmur and want to maximise my chances of getting the hip replacement operation that I really need! So I'm going to eat more meat, seafood and drink my OJ now. Thank you

Thank you as I am sufferiing from Iron Deficiency right now. I've even had, in the past 3 weeks, 2 Units of Iron added to my body. I go this coming Tuesday to have another blood test and to see how my Iron is doing now. I am also taking a 65mg Iron tab everyday.
You could be eating something which is blocking your absorbing of iron. Try cutting out all grains and see if taking Vitamin C with your iron tab helps your body to absorb the iron that much better. It's pure frustration, I know.
@@petrichor100 I take a vitamin C tablet with my iron daily on my doctor's advice to help absorb the iron. My iron levels are so low, he considered sending me to a specialist. I asked him to wait, that I would take my medicine and in three months will see what the iron looks like. He told me to take a Vitamin C tab with the iron tab for better absorption.
It is observed that haemoglobin levels drop after you stop taking tablets. What's your experience?

Changed my life going gluten free. took about two weeks to go from anemic to iron levels being too high.
I also did the keto but my doctor ordered me to stop because I dropped way too much weight.

You might want to request a Full Iron Panel

How are you now??
Oh my word. I was JUST searching thru your videos for this subject. I am trying to help someone. Thank you so much!!!!
For years I dealt with anemia and sometimes I thought it wasn’t a big deal until it became a big deal. Now I take iron medication every day. I make sure I eat food that has iron in it and other healthy benefits. We have to take care of our bodies we really do.
Apparently if you take it every second day, you absorb it better than if you take it every day
Iron requires vit C as well as copper for absorption.
I am like you with my ferritin. Thanks for the bit about copper!
Mine in 8 😢
anyway now I am carnivore for 2 years and do not have this problem anymore.
You just have to take AVC or hydrochrolic acid before every meal to help your digestion!

Not only does vitamin C help with absorption, but dairy INHIBITS absorption. Don't drink milk or eat yogurt with your steak.

Wow Dr.

Is acv good for the kidney?

Hopefully one day when my iron normalizes and hope I can slowly try and add these things back in… 😑😔

Make sure you have enough vitamin C and D.
maybe even take a big dose of both to give things a kick. They're both safe at even 10x the RDA for a quick boost.
Also make sure you're getting enough salt - the body uses the chloride to make stomach acid which you need to digest the iron.

Have you ever tried raw milk? It definitely sits better with people who are sensitive to lactose and casein.
I hope to eventually add it back in, maybe when my iron is stabilized. And even then I’ll start very small, like a tsp at time for a while so my body can get used to it again. @@colinthomson5358 Well it was very gradual! It all started when I decided to chew on ice randomly after drinking a glass of cold water and I found it surprisingly satisfying so I just kept eating the ice every time I was served a beverage with it.
There’s interesting research on dipeptides and tripeptides found in meat and milk.
you can choose to eat meat e.g a grass fed cow which will feed a hell of a lot of people, or you can choose to eat vegan crops and be solely responsible for hundreds or even thousands of animals dying just to grow your individual diet alone.
@@immune18 cows can get 40 years old . When humans are 25 they had time to breed so they should then be culled ...

Should I take iron supplements ?
My doctor said no
But i feel very very tired and dizzy
Thank you very much for your time and your help
Anybody that's reading this. Try Mega Food Blood Builder. I stand by this product. I just started taking it. I can tell a hug difference already.
Thank you for this video doctor I have been anemic all my life due to menstrual cycle. I have quit many jobs due to this
Valuable information
It’s mostly in the yolk
..but fortunately eating cholesterol doesn't actually raise your blood levels, and your cholesterol levels are likely less important than perviously thought. ...but if you want to try a supplement, try Shaklee Iron + C.
I was always anemic my whole adult life , but due to carnivore diet and being post menopausal I think it is under control 🤞
I had it years ago and then had a total hysterectomy. I thought since I was done with periods that I wouldn’t have to worry about it. I was wrong. I passed out in October and fell down my stairs. Apparently my hemoglobin was dangerously low.
Wow never thought about meat
Especially carnivore diet
Good point

I'm going to try eating meat. My doctor wants me to get infusion , but I'm scared of that so here comes the meat.
@@francynelane6524 did you get results? Plz answer
How bad are your periods do you have fibroids
Dear Dr. KenDBerry. Thanks so much for your advice!! God bless you!!
Best Regards.
i am on day 3 of the diet and so far i feel good, i had the anemia diagnosis
i hate the constipation, but day 2 on carnivore i blasted through , what a relief. i will stop the iron pills
What does your meal look like in a day
steak with butter, bacon treat at night
I was a carnivore for over a year and suddenly saw my blood protein level drop below normal. This was simultaneously happening during Keytruda infusions. I was warned my thyroid would be destroyed but nothing was said about my pancreas. Since digestive enzymes are made in the pancreas, I corrected my protein level as well as RBC, hemoglobin and hematocrit levels by taking the enzymes. 🎉😊🎉👍🥩🥓🥚
So what did you eat exactly to fix your problems?

Thank you for this informative video on iron deficiency. I have always had an iron deficiency, its genetic since other members in my family suffer from this as well. Since I began the Keto diet my iron levels have improved. LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!
Iron deficiency is not a genetic issue. There may be a weakness in the body that runs in the family but it doesn't mean everyone's iron deficiency is genetic. There is smething going on under the surface that's causing it and it's not genetics.
@@GameChanger597 low absorption as low acid in the stomach. Connecting the dots. Stomach issues run in my family.
What is your blood group and that of your family? if you are O blood group then you guys need lots of meat. Else you be anemic for life.
Thank you
Excellent! What a relief..
It has made me so happy!
Phew after being bleeding from my bumb for 13 years. I was diagnosed with sever anemia. Levels 5

Did you get results?
@@SmilePlease0073 Going in today, Oct. 18, for another Iron infusion. Still a little low even with taking 65mg of Iron everyday.
@@ronbrandich4196 do you fell shortness of breath?
You could be eating something which is blocking your absorbing of iron. Try cutting out all grains and see if taking Vitamin C with your iron tab helps your body to absorb the iron that much better. It's pure frustration, I know.
You’re a great educator
Thank you Doctor Berry, may God continue to bless you.
Hi, I would like to add the role of the co administration of Vitamin C with iron to increase iron absorption, good data to support.
Onions
Where can we do that?
@@petrichor100 I take a vitamin C tablet with my iron daily on my doctor's advice to help absorb the iron. My iron levels are so low, he considered sending me to a specialist. I asked him to wait, that I would take my medicine and in three months will see what the iron looks like. He told me to take a Vitamin C tab with the iron tab for better absorption.
