  • If you have Iron Deficiency Anemia then this video may help you more than any other because so many people (including doctors) don't know this important fact. Tannins block your bodies ability to absorb Iron when consumed before, during, after a meal rich in iron. Don't let tannins keep you Iron Deficient. Avoid tannins so you can absorb more of the iron your body needs!
In addition to the foods mentioned in this video, Avocados and Olives also contain tannins...

    1. You need the Iron present in meat. (Heme iron) red meat, liver, etc.
    2. Avoid tannins while eating your source of iron - liquids such as any coffee, tea, wine, most beers, fruit juices such as grape, apple, cranberry, any berry juice
    3. No chocolate/cocoa. It decreases iron absorption
    4. Less ripe the fruit, more tannin concentration. Similar for berries, bananas etc. (Unripe bananas have high tannins)
    5. Avoid most nuts, beans, legumes and lentils.
    6. Avoid rye, barley and sorghum
    7. Avoid spices like cinnamon, clove, thyme and vanilla.

Omgosh i wish i found this video sooner! I was vegan for 7 years and had an ok run at first, then in the last 5 years i had 6 iron infusions and less than 2 months after each one id be symptomatic again. I ate all the right “iron rich” plant foods pretty much every meal, i was diligent about my health. I ate zero processed food, alcohol or sugar. Still struggling. I started eating meat 10 months ago after another infusion disappearing out of my system soon after having it. My iron levels were anaemic and shot through the roof after 6 weeks eating meat to the middle range of healthy. Been in normal range since. Now im week 1 carnivore and i feel like a superhuman!!! I am a 54yo male, I was just diagnosed with iron deficiency, my hemoglobin was very low. Got blood work done. My Nurse Practitioner and my doctor told me because I had gastric bypass surgery and gallbladder/gallstones removal, my stomach is not absorbing the iron I eat much at all. They told me to take 65mg of iron with 500mg of vitamin C on an empty stomach. Unfortunately, I have had some side effects. Stomach cramps, complete flushing of my small & large colon (poopage) but they said it would take a while for my body to adjust to the intake of iron that has been missing. And this is something I will need to do for the rest of my life. Getting older is much more challenging than being younger.

Betaine HCL to aid digestion/lack of stomach acid due to gallbladder removal
Dried organ pills to take daily for your iron supplement (personal brand recommendation would be PaleoValley but I’m sure there are other options out there!)

I cannot thank you enough for the knowledge you shared in this particular video. I was desperately and unsuccessfully trying to increase my dangerously low iron level. I incorporated more beef, more bison and liver into my diet but the absorption wasn't where it should be. My iron increased just a little only to decrease again. Now I see that I was doing it all wrong. I sprinkled every piece of red meat and liver with thyme and/or cloves, I ate a considerable amount of dark chocolate 'to increase my iron any way I could', I consumed avocado with eggs, drank herbal tea, very very occasionally a glass of beer or a glass of wine with my meat or had it with a piece of bread. I have been short of breath on and off for years! I didn't know tannines were undoing all my efforts. This can be life changing for me. Thank you.

Well this was an eye opening, informative video. I am ketovore, eating mostly beef, bacon, eggs and cheddar cheese daily. Occasionally chicken. I was surprised to find out from bloodwork that I need to be supplementing iron even on that steady diet.
I've been careful with green tea consumption because I was aware of how it affects iron absorption. I thought I was doing well.
From this video, it would seem I am eating a ton of things that affect my iron.
    > I eat one small chocolate square of 72% dark chocolate after my meal. (ding)
    > I have one small snack a day made from:
    - heavy whipping cream
    - frozen raspberries (ding)
    - instant coffee (ding)
    - unsweetened dark cocoa (ding)
    - cinnamon and sometimes clove (ding and ding)
    - vanilla extract and sometimes vanilla powder (ding and ding)
    > For awhile I was drinking coffee with mct oil daily, too. Stopped that recently, at least.
    > I occasionally have a few cashews. (ding) This one probably isn't as bad as the daily use of so many of the others.

Dr. Berry, I just LOVE you!! I just had this conversation with a friend whose doctor told them to take a plant iron! Now I have even more to back up what I told her about the plant iron they were taking. She and her husband paid a hefty sum for this doctor's so-called elimination diet nutrition program...when I suggested, as an Integrative Health Coach, who wouldn't have charged them a thing, to just try eating a Carnivore diet. And, all the foods you mentioned are also high in oxalates.

This answers so many questions!!! For the past 5 months, I've been doing keto to lose weight and feel better. Well I lost 60 lbs in 4 months and have been on a plateau for the 5th. I feel a little better, but not great. Come to find out, adding vanilla and cinnamon to my 5 cups of coffee a day, eating peanut butter with my celery, and having pure dark chocolate to reduce my sweet cravings, all added up to reduced iron. To the point I was fatigued after little exertion and would get dizzy upon standing.

You can figure this out. Just look into it. Look for confirmation that tannins block iron absorption. It makes sense to me. Then just look up which foods have a lot of tannins.
But the bottom line is, if you have some form of anemia, then you need red meat. Period. Not all this other stuff(stuff that I used to eat a lot of btw but do not anymore, it’s just not necessary ). I hear people all the time telling me about how their doctors steered them the wrong way. Most of them are led by big pharma and vegan/vegetarian mythology . Why on earth wouldn’t they just tell you to eat red meat? Everybody has a guilt complex about eating animals I guess. Good grief, keep it simple.
With a very brief search on it myself, I see that tannins induce hemostasis, which is the stopping of the flow of blood. Which is great if you are bleeding to death, but not very good if you need to build up the blood-at least in my mind. So very quickly I’m learning something new here.

I am a bit confused as well. I researched and read that vitamin C is needed for absorption of iron. Dandelion greens are know to have alot of iron and vitamin C absorption.
Citrus fruits are recommended because of there vitamin C. Beans, lentils are also high in iron. Because of the skin they are not going to be absorbed? I have my dad on a super strict no sugar diet ( except natural sugars) like in green apples and bananas. He can’t have seeds and nuts because he also has diverticulitis. He doesn’t drink coffee, wine or beer. He will occasionally have tea to calm his nerves. From what i am getting from this video, is that you should try to avoid these tannins while eating meat, liver ( iron foods) for the best, quickest absorption. I will keep the fruits, beans, lentils hours away from when he eats his iron to see if this helps.

When I was a kid I was chronically anemic. I ate meat, I took the sticky syrups (they were always green for iron - cough syrups were always red) and I remember the doctor telling my mother to make sure I ate green beans...
I ate lots of grains... When no one was looking I binged on chocolate and sweet fruits. This was in the 50s.
Last time I was told I was anemic (after a significant flu experience) the medics told me to eat prunes and raisins and oysters.
Lectin sensitivity eliminates MOST of the fruits and veggies, legumes (no seeds or seed pods) and while I can deal with lime juice (fresh, organic) avos and olives, most of the Conventional Diet is off my acceptable list.
Still, cold brew coffee (diluted and limited in quantity) and green or oolong teas are on my list, with lettuce, arugula, alliums grass fed dairy and grass fed beef, lamb and rabbit.
I shall be separating my meat intake from my tea/coffee intake (easy to do with intermittent fasting). I doubt that I'm anemic any more, but my heart is a bit wonky.

I read all the reports and for those of you freaking out! No worries these are mot long term studies and generally one meal! Also, many of the studies don’t discuss non-heme vs heme! So, heme iron doesn’t reduce significantly ig tannins are present! Also, wait an hour before consuming tannin rich food if you are concerned. Adding vitamin c rich foods also helps with iron absorption. I’m surprised the doc didn’t read the reports accurately and one report said meat iron or heme forms are not affected by tannins unless in huge amounts! Also, long term there isn’t enough research, scientist’s suggest that the body adapts to the tannins and your absorption will increase in non-heme sources!😊

I've had probs off and on with anemia since age 6. I'm 36, and have hoshimotoes. I think the anemia was one of the early signs the drs missed. I wasn't diagnosed with his his until my 30s, but I think it was triggered at age 6 after a bad bought of impentigo. As a kid, my mom taught me how to mostly regulate my anemia with food. Things like spinach with tomatoes or oj to aid absorption, making sure to have liver when on my cycle, and to make sure to keep a decent amount of red meat in my diet. I have been drinking herbal and green/white tea as a go to beverage my whole life, and I've always loved berries. I'm suprised that with me having eaten a lot of that's stuff I might have made things worse. I currently don't have probs with my anemia but am getting my hoshis stable with a omnivore keto diet so I absorb things waay better. I do at most 1/4 cup of berries, with 1/4 cup of pecans a day as part of a yogurt bowl/parfait. I pair with various types of meat and animal protein. For instance today my parfait for breakfast is paired with 6 oz of steak, 1/2 serv of cheddar cheese cubes, and 4 baked links of Amazon's raw breakfast pork sausage. And my parfait includes 1 cup of home made high fat yogurt. I intend to do for my second and final meal 6 oz of steak with veg cooked with 1 tsp animal fat. I'm thinking onion, carrot, and arugala with seasonings. And yeah, I do intermittent fasting with a 2mad structure and yeah I'm doing more than 20 g net carbs. I actually have a 35 g carb limit because lower causes nasty glucose drops sending me to tze hospital so I have a hard limit of 35 g instead that I'm often a bit under. I think todays mrals will be either 32 or 33 g total intake of carbs, so not bad.
