    I believe that you get only that "whitish" color when laser engraving metal iPhone housings due to nature of the material. The laser is effectively burning away the anodisation layer of the aluminium housing, taking the factory color and the oxide shell with it, basically exposing the raw metal underneath. So yeah, you'll always get the same "bare aluminum" color no matter what. Changing metals might yield different results.
    Also note that the anodisation is there not only to provide the color, but also to act as a "defence layer" to the metal, protecting it from wear and corrosion. Stripping it away might compromise such qualities...and overtime, a new "natural" oxide layer might form, which might lead to unorthodox look.

    • @mayukhbejoy8571
      @mayukhbejoy8571 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be the adhesive

    • @iPelaaja1
      @iPelaaja1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Anodisation basically IS corrosion though... Aluminium instantly react with air to create a layer of aluminium oxide which is same as anodisation. The laser might burn the coloured surface, but a new anodisation will immeadiatly form, it shouldn't change in colour.

    • @luca7069
      @luca7069 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@iPelaaja1 Pretty much yeah, but the oxidation that occurs naturally isn't really comparable in terms of metallurgic qualities to the one that's done in the factory, under precise temperatures and conditions.
      Yeah, there won't be any ugly "rust" of sorts, but the new oxide won't be as hard and durable as the factory one.

    • @robinrai4973
      @robinrai4973 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, I always sand and polish the frames around my phone lol. If you don't clear coat it it'll oxidise overtime with quite a nasty uneven dull grey wherever you've held it overtime.

    • @robinrai4973
      @robinrai4973 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@luca7069 Funnily enough from experience, you do sorta get "rust", and only after quite a long period of time (about a month). Tiny dull, dark grey dots will appear and eventually take over the whole exposed aluminium. It's just said natural anodization as mentioned, but it (visibly anyway) isn't instant. It also only appears in places where the phone is held, probably from salty sweat.

    Figured I'd leave a comment on what my shop does since I purchased this about a year ago to start doing back glasses. This is by no means a tutorial but what we've learned through trial and error. I hope this creates discussion and we can learn using this machine.
    1) Test phone out for full functionality, then remove the screen and back camera module from the device (carbon has actually gotten underneath the digitizer and onto the LCD so we had to do a screen replacement as well. Carbon also ended up on the camera sensors)
    2) Level the machine, select the correct template. You can then align the entire template to the phone. When you do select the template, you can select all and there's a delete button on the left-hand side. This will single out every curve/rectangle area the laser avoids. You can then align the camera/mic/flash to the phone so the laser avoids it. Once they're all set and aligned you can laser the piece by using the fill option to get back to what will be lasered.
    3) We set the laser speed to 700mms at 98% power, we let it run for about 30 minutes by selecting the continuous checkmark. This is where we can go to whatever other repairs while the laser does the work.
    4) Laser is done on the majority of the device but we have the unlasered sections still. Those can be a pain in the butt removing since it's still adhesive. We use the select all>delete again and then select the usual non-lasered bits and use the fill button. We then fill every non-lasered part except camera/mic/flash. We then laser at 2000mms at 70% power. NOT CONTINUOUS. This will remove the paint/adhesive but we have everything safer underneath.
    5) We then put the phone in a dehydrator at 160 degrees F for 15 minutes
    6) Mobile Sentrix has a punch tool device where you press down and it's spring-loaded. I know these are similar to what metal workers use to make a small indent on metal. This is awesome for breaking the glass around the camera area as that is the most difficult.
    7) after you break all the glass into smaller bits, you can then use an x-acto No 17 blade to start removing/chiseling the back glass from the phone.
    8) Once you remove all the glass, you put it back under the laser-like in this video. You can move all the small components so the laser can laser a lot more accurately around the non-laser sections. We then do 700mms at 98% power. We will leave this for 30-40 minutes. Every 10-15 minutes we stop the laser and brush off the old adhesive ashes. Once you do enough passes the back of the phone is incredibly shiny and clean.
    9) You will then take your X-Acto No 17 blade and go around the edges of the phone where the thickest part of the adhesive is. It should clean up nicely with all the lasering done before. You then laser the phone again for a couple minutes.
    10) Take your new backglass and test fit. If it doesn't sit perfectly you may have some small shards of glass on the body still. Clean all of that up and keep test fitting.
    11) We originally used B7000. It's a more thick glue and it never really looks OEM when it dried. Instead, we use medium viscosity superglue. We go all along the border, not applying too much, then going over the back of the phone. We used to just do the border but customers came back with broken backglasses that would have huge chunks missing and of course, it seemed easier to break. Super gluing the entire back made it a little less prone to getting an easy crack when they drop the phone again. I actually went to multiple jewelry stores trying to determine the best glue. Still open to options.
    12) you don't have much time, we affix the back glass, and then use a ton of small clamps to hold down the glass while it tries. I found a really small clamp that works perfectly for the corner by the camera.
    13) Use a microfiber and some acetone to clean up superglue spillage. Then some alcohol to get rid of the acetone leftover.
    14) Power up and test the phone again
    We had a lot of trial and error. We have had phones end up dying during this process by accidental lasering or damage to the small dock ribbon cable while using the blade. The iPhone 11 template needs to protect the volume button ribbon cable, you will need to add that. Some phones that were so badly damaged were working fine but once lasered would boot loop or just restart. We had to take the loss on those. Each back glass takes about 4 hours but the machine does the majority of the work. We had an iPhone 11 come in then act funky after. The back glass job was so pristine that they actually warrantied the iPhone. Didn't know we replaced the back glass.
    Hope this gives somewhat of an idea of what the laser is capable of. This isn't a tutorial by any means and you run the risk of device loss by running the laser. Good luck to all that decide to go on this endeavor. In the fume extractor, I cut up a furnace filter and placed it on top of the carbon filter so that way the fume filter doesn't get that dirty. When I replaced the top cut-up furnace filter it was black. There's a ton of ash/carbon produced by this.

      He and you didn't say one word about eye safety. I get the impression that it's not a thing, although goggles are included.

With the e-waste problems were facing, governments also have a much bigger role to play to ensure manufacturers increase the serviceability of their gear. Thanks for leading the good fight.

    Is this really faster than just replacing the housing?
    I work at a phone repair shop and pretty much any iPhone housing swap shouldn't really take more than 1 hour to do (actually most techicians do it in 45 minutes), while if each machine pass is 10 minutes and you have to do 2 for the glass, remove the broken glass pieces which lets say that it takes 15 minutes, do 1 more pass for the glue, and then applying new glue and letting it harden which lets say it takes another 15 minutes, it is already not worth it to use the machine, and im not even mentioning the fact that in total you spend at least 10 minutes just using the software throughout the repair, plus it takes away bench space with both the machine and computer required to use it, and consumes power, not to be a downer but its just not worth it.
    Also back repairs for iPhones just aren't that common, usually on average we get like 2 per week maybe, and if the metal frame is banged up, you still have to replace the whole housing anyway.

    Apple making their iPhones more unreparable for repair , the new ios version won't allow swapable parts to work on their iPhone .... Hugh jeffreys uses proper diassembly tools from heating plates to laser machine.... Appreciate this and great work......

    Apple:
    IPhone 13: The entire iPhone including the frame is made out of a single piece of glass that can’t be disassembled, so you can’t fix it once it breaks. Why? Because we’re greedy a$$holes. Hahaha.

    Hi, I saw another video (iPad Rehab channel) talking about the same laser machine you are presenting. In that video the lady said the laser damaged the logic board rear camera function, it was recommended to remove the logic board before running the laser.

    Great job! English is not my native language, I missed if the laser designed it cannot be done on the glass cover. I supposed the other benefit using the tool is keeping more of the waterproof, because you're not disassembling all the phone.

    It's actually possible to get the back glass off of an iPhone using only heat, all you need is a lot of heat and flat razor blade. Taking the components out of the frame to avoid damage is also a good idea.

    He didn't discuss laser eye safety. The camera image didn't seem to be affected at all. In other words the sensor was not harmed by reflected laser light.
    So, do you have to wear eye protection? I saw goggles in the kit but he never mentioned them.

    Hi mate. When doing these types of repair, i would definetly recommend to always remove the camera and screen. The laser creates a lot of dust, that can easily get stuck in the camera sensor, meaning you'd have to replace the camera aswell. I've also noticed that dust can get in between the LCD layers on Xr, 8 and SE models. Otherwise, great video!
