      If the bricks are laid on a dirt ground then when it rains the ground will soften and move around over time which will cause the brick to crack, bow and eventually fall apart

    • @benhortonben9105
      @benhortonben9105 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aricnewlun535 if you were to build a 2 courses underground and pour concrete in a trench around the bricks would that stop it happening? Like footings? Asking because I'm an enthusiastic novice?

    • @aricnewlun535
      @aricnewlun535 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@benhortonben9105 well if you dig a little ways in the ground you can always trench pour a footing as long as you smoothen it the best you can, it’s recommended to use form boards like 2 by 4s and get some stakes and form up where you want to pour and then once the concrete hardens you can build your brick on that concrete, but when you lay the brick depending on what the project is the idea is to to keep water out the best you can because water will deteriorate the brickwork over time if there’s not proper drainage so make sure you make spots for weep vents in a few of the joints at the bottom of your course so water can flow out

    I don’t see the point of concreting the base. Just lay footing for the wall. Now you have a barrier at the bottom of your planter and no earth worms can migrate into your planter soil.

      Depends on what you are going to plant....this was about 40cm deep, which is plenty for small flowers that he had in there. Bigger plants with deeper roots, or a shallower planter, I would have just strip foootings.

    Do I have to use concrete or can I lay directly on soil? I want to make large deliminated beds but less high than those on the video but wider. I have a large bedding for vegetable but hard to get to the vegs on each side. So wanted to section it in portion by bricks and in between some stones. Thought bricks will be more resistant than wood beams.

      I was wondering this? Surely if you leave the bottom open it will keep the plants hydrated and soak any excess water away to stop over watering? I'm guessing it's to keep the walls strong giving them a strong base.

Still, I love your idea and it is just beautiful! P.S. I’m in Texas and fire ants took over my raise bed and killed my broccoli. Hope you have better luck.

      Mr Whatevah -as a rule no when it comes to appearance as you only see the tops of the bricks with paving bricks where as here you see the side of the bricks.You could use them to save money if you're going to render it after and just want to use up any spare bricks you have but that said you'll then have to pay for sand and cement to render where as using new bricks you don't have to.They'll be fine to use as in they won't crack or anything but it's more about appearance they're designed to go on the ground but if you are rendering it after then you might as well use what you have.
