My husband gets tons of pallets at work. He built me 4 standing raised beds out of pallets. We just had to buy the nails, a couple of 2x 4’s & some landscape fabric. Probably spent $50 for all 4 beds
I watched this video and I ran to the farmer's market bought soil and on the way home I just stumbled across 3 great pallet's on the side of the road and I just made 3 standing herb boxes for virtually no money! Thanks for the inspiration! This was a great idea! I wish I could send you pictures
"Cost $0" isn't true, even if you don't put any price on your own time. You use thousands of dollars of equipment to make this, so the amortised cost of those tools goes into the things you make with them.

This is the most thorough demonstation of dismantling a pallet and using the boards for a raised bed. Awesome job, James!! Thank you. So glad u included EVERYTHING!!

It looks so easy the way you got the pallet and dismantled it and used the boards to build a bed. I would actually need to work with someone to learn how to do that and it’s worth it. You could build your own beds and that can save you a lot of money. I enjoy watching your channel as a matter of fact I am going to get started planting some vegetables thanks to you. Nice work. Recycling always wins. When I was demolishing old wooden houses for recycling, to maximize the floorboards recovered, we used the saw to cut the tongue and groove boards 2-3 floor joists wide. Then cut the floor joists. Just like your first cut. I would do the underside of the pallet instead of the top. Remove the 3-4 rails from the bottom first. At the yard we would lay the flooring sections face down. Then get a sledgehammer and roll the floor joists over removing all the boards at once. Nails stayed in the floorboards. Recovery rate 98% for high value timbers no split timbers.

There's this Danish or Norwegian chap on youtube who shows you how to take apart a pallet without splitting the wood and without power tools, just need a heavy (ish) mallet and a crowbar or prybar. As for cutting the wood, you can cut them using a hand saw but need to use a mitre box to cut a perfect 90 degree cut on the ends. Plastic mitre boxes cost a few dollars (I'm in UK and you can get one for £4.99 here). Will need a few clamps though and they aren't cheap either, but find a friend who will lend you some and you're good to go :)
I’ve never done any woodworking before but you made this all make so much sense! Thank you. This was an excellent 101 class and I hope to someday put it into practice! Most gardeners are missing the boat. Consider using discarded upright Freezers or refrigerators for a raised bed. They are just the right size for weeding and harvesting at waist height, making them ideal for wheelchair access or seniors, or those with back problems. One or a dozen, it 's up to you. It took me two weeks on Craigslist to get an even dozen boxes, and that was being picky. No stainless steel, or black refrigerators, no side-by-sides, only white boxes. They come insulated, and the type of soil they have is up to you. No more gophers, moles, rabbits, either! Just remove and discard the doors and shelves, fill and plant. Water with a garden hose, or plumb them with an irrigation system from below. Ideal for an apartment with a small patio, or a big yard. No more bending to weed! Best of all, they're free, and you keep them out of the landfill! Details to your questions if you like
@@ashleynunnsmith Actually Ashley, you have to PLUG holes to prevent too much drainage! The boxes come with multiple holes for lines that run into them for refrigerant. I took a metal hole saw and at one end of my boxes fitted a simple pipe with a valve to drain off excess water. You can keep the boxes from holding standing water, and recycle the water to use. Like filling any container, too much water can cause problems with your plants. With the boxes laying on their backs, you have a natural bathtub.

I love this simple raised bed. I salvaged a large heap of Jarrah floor boards for exactly something like this. My Mrs has been on my back to get rid of them by chopping them into firewood or something however after seeing this she’s sold and wants the first ones for her flowers. Thanks heaps!!❤
It's not really free because of the screws and the saw blade used to cut the nails initially but it's still a great idea which is why I've been doing it for years. I take the time to break them down by prying the boards off so I can use everything. Linseed oil works good for preservation of the wood as long as it's done every years.

Happy dog! 🐾 FYi: you’re really really doing the video for people who get encouraged and they could see is very easy and cheap and free to do this mini garden bed) .But at the same time people don’t have the machinery to cut these things will be nice maybe you could sell these things like a kit with the screws of course (diy mini garden bed) for cheap price since you get it for free even if you can sell it for $10 or $15 + shipping. I think ppl would like this. 🤔🧐 from Pennsylvania! Happy Gardening 👩🏻🌾
You sir have saved me so much time and frustration trying to pry pallets apart with a wrecking bar. Genius! I get my wood free from the farm equipment dealership down the road. They throw so many pallets and wooden crates away free for the taking! I even found four 16' 2x4s one day!
Love this so much. You could even do that burn treatment on it would look so good. You do such a good job teaching all the details I feel like I can go raid my husband's garage for tools to build this on my own 😁
Something most people don't realize is that most pallets are made our of oak, or some other hard wood; not soft pine, so they are REALLY strong and will last a long time. Hence why you don't want to try to remove the nails as they are REALLY stuck into that hard wood. And, trying to drive nails through hard wood without predrilling the holds will almost always end up bending the nails. GREAT video. I've been wanting to do this for several years now and have access to the pallets. So NOW I'm excited to do it, thanks to you!
Here most if not all are made out of pine. Pine is strong enough for this purpose, sometimes they just double the planks. Oak is way too valuable here to be used for pallets. The one in the video looks to be pine too.
This is so helpful! I have 4 pallets from raised bed deliveries that I am going to repurpose as raised beds thanks to your video. This is really a great design and explanation. So many building gems in addition to the tutorial.

I did this and my friends n family are like WOW! I have two 16 inch by 40 inch by 10 inch deep raised bed boxes on my apartment balcony and it really intensified the beauty of the place. PLUS! Im growing some herbs, veggies, and some flowers in these 2 beds. The box cost close to nothing mostly sweat and some workout. I spent $25 on the bag of soil and different packs of seeds. Thank you Mr Prigioni for creating this video. God Bless you sir! And God Bless Us All! 🙏😊
Nice tempo to the presentation. Most diy’s spend too much time repeating the same process. Your’s was spot on. Glad I came across your video. Fun project.
This is much more practical than some of the other videos I've watched on how to make these. I'm not taking anything away from those channels, but their builds were much more complicated, and used a lot of glue-ups, and tools that weren't necessary. These things are designed to live outside. They're not supposed to be ultra-pretty, and perfect because the weather, and time are going to kick the crap out of them anyways. I say keep the super-duper hardcore nice ones to inside areas like enclosed porches, decks, and places the rain, and wind won't destroy them.
James, you are so smart. Thank you for the tips and tricks. Everything you said made so much sense. You are really good at explaining it all. You should be a shop teacher!

I scavenged twelve foot 2x5s out of their dumpster. I never leave the house without my ratcheting straps. Pick stuff up off the side of the road. There are free supies everywhere. Literally.
the same story here. I totally get you!!
Just love watching your great instructional videos - your energy is contagious and following your easy to garden directions takes the stress out of it all - great job.
That raised bed was satisfying to watch being built.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤love Tuck. Oh' how precious it is to see him out with you in the garden. Please watch him, because hawks can snatch him up in a second.
A wonderful build ! Turning left over pallets into good growing space, Amazing ! Great Video...
You made it look so easy! Tuck is so 🥰
Can't tell you how inspiring it is to watch a fellow gardener from the garden state. Thanks for everything you do James :)
Boss Tuck is so happy with the good job 😊❤❤❤
A miter saw, skil saw, power drivers, clamps and deck screws. Completely free and super easy!
Tuck is the best supervisor 😆♥️
I agree Tuck is the best Supervisor 👌
No Muck when Tucks around!! lol love animals aren’t they great 😇
❤❤❤❤❤
This guy is a beast!
Tucker: 🥺
💕💕💕💕💕
Glad to see Tuck in the garden! Great way to recycle and the bed looks good!
Great to see Tuck's doing well. Hope his trachea is better and coughing subsided. He is the cherry on the cake of every video. 🍒🐕🌾🍀
When I saw those machines, I thought forget zero dollars, I might have to apply for a loan to get those machines.
My thoughts as well!😂
Check out if your area has a tool library! A lot of people don’t realize how many places have them. I never would buy a hammer drill or a cement mixer, but my local one just rents them out through the library.
That's all I ended up watching it for in the end. "Ooh wonder what he's going to pull out this time?" Lol
Nothing's every free
could do the exact same with a handheld saw and a manual drill! the only real difference between machine and manual tools is speed.
Great video!!! I was told wrongly that all pallets are treated with chemicals. Now I know to look for the HT stamp. Thank you so much!!!
you’re easily my favorite gardener on youtube x your excitement, consistency, harvests, growth, just EVERYTHING IS SOO INSPIRATIONAL! i’m so thankful you’ve chosen to share your gift with us
not mien
Don’t forget the hardware cloth as flooring before the dirt so that voles and moles stay out. Just a suggestion with the added on cost. Great DIY!
Wire grate at bottom
Tuck is so adorable with great moral support.
So i went out today and found my pallet but it is a huge one , i ordered all of the power tools for the job and I’m really excited to have your video to follow for the steps ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤thank you Jp & tucker❤❤❤❤❤
Very nice! I’ve always wanted raised beds and watching you construct this so easily inspires me to try making one!
Thank you, very informative. I didn't know about MT -vs- HT. That was worth it just for that.
After most the snow melting off here in SW Montana, we just got 6" of new snow today (4/13/23) with promise of lows in the teens for the next several days.
Gotta love springtime in the N. Rockies.
Garden on!
Absolutely LOVE your videos! You and Tuck are one heck of a team and such a pleasure to watch! I recently found someone selling 200 pallet boards super cheap and bought them all for exactly this purpose. You're instructions are so clear and easy to follow, thank you so much for helping me on my gardening journey!
This was awesome! Now I'll be checking the pallets at my work to see what they are stamped with! Thanks for this great tip!!❤
That trick with the Square and grip it down for a straight cut was an absolutely legendary tip man.
I'm grateful for the effort you put into your videos.
❤This is exactly purrfect to extend my back yard garden to the front yard in front of windows. Thank you James and Tuck. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
Thank you, James, for always inspiring me. Great idea!
I built one out of a pallet yesterday! A complete novice with borrowed tools and it took 2 hours! Thank you so much, a perfect video and easy to follow.
Were you able to cut the nails? I don't have one of these "nail saws". Guess I need to purchase one...
@chriswhitehouse8982 I just hammered them into the wood. You it become too difficult to remove the main thick nails.
I'm so encouraged by this example you've given for a raised bed from one pallet.
Thank you. 🇨🇦
Appreciate the step by step. I always wanted to learn woodworking but never knew anyone to learn from. I'm feeling much more confident in tackling my wife's garden plans now.
Another amazing video, you and Tuck have inspired me to work toward my own food forest!
This is one of my favorite videos from you yet!! I love refurbishing pallets and I actually have been really looking to add some raised beds this year so thank you VERY much! This is perfect!
This came out so awesomely done. Love watching your videos and Tuck in the summer with his carrots 🥕 and veggies. He’s so cute!
Ask your neighbour or colleague who have the tools to build two raised beds out of two pallets together. Improve the neighborhood, improve the garden.
@@paulhorn24 o no , I was talking in general, not for myself. I have 8 garden beds myself . Thanks 😊
@@irisfigueroa2511 i too was talking in general
What an awesome way to repurpose pallets. And no hammering the boards off required!
... and ❤❤❤ for Tuck!
You do such a good job teaching all the details I feel like I can go raid my husband's garage for tools to build this on my own 😁
Now that's chick power!! You go girl.

As for the nails, yes, they are stuck, but that's because they are really huge nails.
This is so helpful! I have 4 pallets from raised bed deliveries that I am going to repurpose as raised beds thanks to your video. This is really a great design and explanation. So many building gems in addition to the tutorial.
Sweet little tuck great little sidekick. We enjoy both of you. Keep them coming. ❤❤❤
Thank you for sharing your experience! The raise beds using old pallets are really nice. I will make several ones for my garden.
Thank you so much for sharing this tutorial! Your instructions are so clear and easy to understand that I feel confident that, even with my limited construction skills, I could successfully create my own pallet raised bed.
Thank you also to your wonderful snoopervisor! 🐾🐾
That intro is absolutely amazing haha.
Haha! Gotta make sure you are awake and alert!
This is exciting! I have access to free palettes and this is downright awesome! You are very clear step by step. I already have all these tools. Thank you. ❤
Great idea on that skill saw!! Surely beats the prying method!!! Im going to take this idea to build a gate for the side of the house. Thank you. Hope your dog is doing well. Thanks again.
I've seen this done b4 but you really made it look so easy.
Since I have access to some pallets and all I need is one I'll start on that asap. Thank you
Free to build. $100 to fill with foxfarm happy frog soil. 😂
Is that the soil he used?
Tanto trabajo para usarlo de maceta!!😮No manches !!😂
....But how do we do this at home 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Lol🤣🤣🤣
🤷🏼♂️
Steal a pallet from a loading dock nearby. Worked for me!
Cost is not $0. You have to buy 3 different saws!
Scews cost money tok last time I checked.
Not to mention NAILS or SCREWS.
Right lol
This was so helpful and just I love that you put lettuce in with your flowers. People think I'm so strange for wanting to do this in my garden. but I love it😁❤
Great video! 🌿 I love how you made gardening accessible and budget-friendly by using just one pallet. Your step-by-step instructions were clear and easy to follow. Can't wait to try this out in my own backyard. Thanks for sharing such a practical and sustainable gardening tip! 👍
You only need $400 dollars worth of tools to build a raised bed that costs $45 to buy
Why are you such a hater? If you have a handsaw a Phillips screwdriver, hacksaw, hammer and creative as this gentleman then YES! You can do it. Come on now. You might even enjoy it. Just give it a try. You might even surprise yourself and realize that you REALLY ARE TALENTED! Please stop being negative to yourself. YOU CAN DO IT! We believe in you. 🙏😊

Most men have all the tools
Exactly! Like what kind of man is he, I'm a women and I have most of these tools.
You just need a hammer and some nails, get to work. Stop complaining
Nice tempo to the presentation. Most diy’s spend too much time repeating the same process. Your’s was spot on. Glad I came across your video. Fun project.
Good that it even looks clean with no mould an hopefuly no chemicals spilt on it
This is much more practical than some of the other videos I've watched on how to make these.
I really enjoyed watching you build the Raised Bed. I just love seeing them with Flowers and Vegetables in them.
I haven’t barely started watching this video and I want get out and do this. I have several pallets that I’ve got over the last several years if not longer lol. Thanks so much for sharing you make it look so easy.
Thank you for taking the time to show how to make this project. I love DIY!
James, thank you for sharing your skills and ideas on gardening.
Loved that you mentioned the marking on the wood, watched a lot of similar videos but you're the first I heard the info from ❤
Tuck is SO cute. Great Job! I love that it costs virtually nothing and makes use of the pallet by recycling ♻ 🫛🫚🌱🌻
I always just went for it when it came to making stuff out of pallets. I just grabbed the stuff I had and did everything going with the flow but now I really liked how it turned out for you with some more effort. Gotta try this, thanks!
We have moles so I would have to put screens on the bottom. Nice project. I will have to do a couple of these. Thanks James and Tuck
♥I love Tuck. I had a Yorkie, "Guinness" for 18 years. He loved to be in the garden with me. He liked to dig the soil. Maybe he thought he was helping. lol. Tuck makes me happy. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
As usual, very helpful video. Glad Tuck was doing his usual supervisory role. He is very much a champ. And so are you James. You're a fine young man doing a great job on your channel. Jesus bless.
This video tip is severely underrated! I'm so glad your video popped up on my feed. Such a great idea!
