1.Money itself doesn't just automatically make you happier. I know people usually only say that once they have achieved a certain level of wealth. What I can say though is that money has the ability to make your life a lot easier, things less stressful, you don't have to worry about any upcoming emergencies, you don't do the math when you go grocery shopping, and it's just easier to focus on the things that really matter in life. I definitely feel a lot free now that I don't have to worry about paying rent or what if there's an emergency coming up, I can simply pay for it out of pocket. Instead, I can now pursue hobbies, I can take dance classes with my wife that I really enjoy, I can take piano classes, or just anything else that gives me purpose or have a sense of self improvement.
2. The self-reliance I had made me a lot stronger as a person. My parents always raised me to be very independent not just in terms of money. Other people than you would get a lot more pocket money but they didn't necessarily understand or were able to manage money better than I was. Overall, it's a lot harder to adjust to less money than to more money. I pretty much always knew if I wanted something, I simply had to work for it and do it myself.
3. Being broke or being rich is really a matter of perception. My dad's from Brazil and we lived in Germany so whenever we would go to Brazil and visit relatives, they all thought we were filthy rich so they all expected us to bring a lot of gifts and to pick up the tab and pay for the bill when in reality, my parents were in debt and had to worry about how to pay
for the mortgage and how to make ends meet. But we lived in a different country and even though we had absolutely more money, relatively, we were not richer or poorer than the people in Brazil.
4. Having extra money doesn't just happen. You have to actually plan for it. If you don't manage your money upfront. You'll just spend it, at least, that's what I do and most people I know. If you never plan to set aside money for an emergency upfront chances are it'll hit you very hard and it'll have very drastic consequences.
5. You can buy pretty much anything secondhand or vintage or at a deal. Honestly, until I was in my 20s, pretty much everything I bought was either on sale at a store, it was a hand-me-down from someone, or it was a vintage item. Even though I got certain outfit elements that were quite a bit bolder and not the foundational wardrobe pieces,I still have a lot of the items from the period that I still wear today because they have a certain timeless character to it.
6. Being poor takes a lot of time. If you just always have to think about how you pay for your groceries and for your rent and for any kind of other expense, your mental capacity is just focused on that and your brain is just spinning and trying to understand where you can find something else.
7. Being poor can actually make you quite adaptive and creative when it comes to problem solving. When my car breaks now, it's easy! I just go to the dealership and have them fix it. If that isn't an option, maybe you have to borrow with someone so you can help them out and they help you out or you go to youtube and figure out how to fix it yourself. Trying to overcome an obstacle when you don't have the money to fix it is a really valuable lesson that even helps me a lot now that I'm a lot more comfortable financially.
8. You can still treat yourself if you do so responsibly. You buy little things and things that don't have a high cost or a long-term monthly recurring cost. You can go out maybe with someone at a restaurant that's not super fancy but it's small and the gesture counts and you can still very much enjoy it or maybe you buy yourself a jacket that you've always wanted and that you need because it's so cold outside but honestly always ask yourself is it something I really need or is it something I just want and if you need something every once in a while to keep going it's okay. - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต
being poor taught me to treat everyone equally and with respect, despite their social status or anything really.
i was left on the street i was 5 and at 32 i don't have much, however i'm proud of myself as no one ever gave me anything and i made it pretty far considering where i came from.
so be nice to people you never know what someone has gone through.

Realizing that time is limited and nonrenewable resource, I would not like to spend it on finding ways to save money (but still remain being financially responsible) Would you be so very kind to please share how did you manage to overwrite the old program, allow yourself to enjoy the finer things and remain very discerning consumer? I've been shopping at thrift stores for 40 years, and I love it. It's amazing what you can sometimes find. Once, I found a Pierre Cardin suit for only $14! It fit me beautifully, I didn't even have to get it tailored. I had it dry cleaned and wore it to a wedding. I got so many compliments on it. Just goes to prove that you don't have to spend a lot to look good. Just be a wise shopper and learn to spot a good quality garment.
I just learned to stop buying things that I want to avoid the "new" normal. At the end of the day, who you have in your life is more important than what you have. "Money can't buy happiness, but it sure does make your life a whole lot easier". Great video and a great lesson in life!
You have an uncanny ability to find great looking and wonderfully preserved vintage clothes, especially suits and sports coats. I am having little luck in my quest. However, I am most grateful for what you have taught me regarding the value of vintage clothes and I shall continue my search.
This reminds me of when I was jobless and broke. It's difficult when you've hit rock bottom. You look up at the hole and see that bright light, but it feels so far away. You have to work at digging yourself out of that hole and work towards your success while also not forgetting your failures.

i was so broke at one time i could hardly scare up the 20 cents to buy a box or rice-a-roni.
no food pantries or food stamps back then. i am 78 now and have more money than i need.
now i worry about health, not money....geez

Raphael I am so glad that you mention that you go to thrift stores and find quality vintage clothes and accessories. I have been doing that after having bought a $100 tie only to find it in a thrift store about a month later for $3.00. Research, be observant and economize are some of my key watch words these days! Your videos on what to look for and how to dress has led me to some great finds. Today, I bought dress pants with the original tags and vintage silk ties with original value of $205 for $32! Thanks for your great videos!

Mike, Hmm! $ 2500 a month in LA would be a steal for Raphael's old place. On a TDY assignment for work, I had to live 2 months in a minuscule one-room studio dump with a a view of a brick wall in San Fran and it was north of $3K per month. At least I didn't have to pay for it personally.

I came from a very prosperous California business family, "Mein Vater" being a lifer in the US Navy, so I grew up in that tradition also. My parents made me work for every penny I wanted, so good lessons there, taught me the value of a dollar. But still I had a lot of lessons to learn and later in life I made some foolish moves and ended up actually homeless, I was working and fortunately the production company I was out of town working with was putting me up, homeless in the Hilton! I felt like a fool, but worked hard and recovered. You really made some great points and I loved listening, and learned some things! Thanks again.
I learned that not having much money helps you not only plan what your buying, but also taught me to cook because it's cheaper, and I am now a talented cook because of it, and I love cooking. In my house the kitchen is the heart of the home.

damals lernte ich auch das Dinge dich nicht glücklicher machen sondern die Zeit die ich mit anderen verbringen konnte. nun verdiene ich gut kann aber sagen das mich das mehr an Geld nicht glücklicher gemacht hat.
Ich habe auch vieles erst mit 30 gelernt. auch fest zu stellen was mich beruflich glücklich macht und dieses Ziel zu verfolgen hat mir mehr gebracht als alle Dinge die ich mich gekauft habe.
Ich freue mich sehr so viele Gemeinsamkeiten gefunden zu haben. 👍
I recall shortly after finishing university having to spend an entire pay cheque on my monthly rent and taking 2 to 3 pay cheques for car repair, or driving clunkers that broke down periodically. Money doesn't buy happiness but it does buy convenience.

You are right on point Raphael! I have been there and done that. I feel empathy with you in what you went through growing up. Yet more money does not guarantee anything. Good health, a positive attitude, and goal setting are significant, as they will get you through even the most the difficult times.

Anyone who feels that way has never really experienced real, enduring poverty.
I have lived most of my life broke, and the lessons being broke taught me still are part of the way I live now that I am doing better. So many of your tips are spot on. I still only buy things on discount, including most food. I still work on my cars because 1. I enjoy it. and 2, it's a relic from when I either fixed it myself or nothing. I still take great pride in fixing my car with $150 in parts vs a $1500 bill at the dealer. Most people aren't broke forever, unless they are truly in a bad situation mentally, or physically. Most people, with great effort, can change their situation in time. I know, because I did. Great video.

I'm in my late 30's and I make 3 to 4 times as much as I did in my 20's and own two places but honestly I way less happy than then. It seems like now I just have more stuff but I don't free richer or happier I just feel tired all the time it's like I'm working just to pay never ending bills. And friends and family just think my life is great cause I earn good money and seems like my career going great. All I wanted was to be free to go fishing and hunting. This video is so true.
Hi, only recently stumbled across your channel but am really enjoying the content. It's quite inspiring to see that the concept of being a Gentleman and the wearing quality traditional English clothing is being taken up outside of the UK. A lot of wisdom is passed on here. The greatest pleasure in having money is helping others. However the second greatest pleasure is dressing in shabby blue jeans, worn out sneakers and a discolored stained sweat shirt simply because you feel comfortable and don't care what others think. But that is something he would never understand!

I love the Gentleman's Gazette, I have shared this channel with several people I know. Right now I am going through a job loss situation, but I have started working on my artwork side hustle. I am also working on a children's book inspired by my 2 daughters.
I just purchased a marvelous boutonniere from Gentlemen’s Gazette. A customer service rep checked in before shipping, after shipping and checked in upon delivery. If you can get, or are even thinking in terms of a credit card, or can afford to run a vehicle up until the point it breaks, you're not really very broke at all.
You're in a position of some sort financial trust to be awarded credit and vehicles are an expensive luxury in Europe where public transport in more urban areas is plentiful. Yes it may well be slower!
Could you do a video about what type of music to play when entertaining others? What type of drinks? Food, etc. etc. etc.?

This is a wonderful video, Raphael, and truly needed in this day and age. Balances nicely with the other videos where one can feel that they need to spend hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars on good quality style. (I don't mean just your videos, but that of other "gentlemen's fashions" that I've come across. It's a great message in that good fashion and making oneself feel good doesn't always have to cost a lot of high dollars -- it's the enjoyment of what you have, and of the special moments in life. I think you described "mindfulness" quite effectively without even having to say the word. Well done!

As a very young man in college and then medical school,I found a lot at consignment shops and at military surplus stores(including footwear and outerwear).Fortunately ,having been a jock it turned out that done correctly,clothes looked good on me so being in good physical shape helps with the wardrobe issue as long as the clothing is of good quality old or new.

The number one thing I've learned from being broke is that I never want to be broke ever again. I graduated from university amidst a financial crisis in 2008. I jumped from one short term contract to another, filing the gaps with unemployment benefits. I finally got my big a break six years ago and I've been financially comfortable since then.

I bought 2nd hand clothes when I was a teen, and that was fun. I am doing it again. It's still fun. I love the clothes I have found. And the savings is nice!
