The term “creative” has been hi jacked and sadly ring fenced largely by un creative people. So often when people say “I’m a creative” what they mean is they are consumers of other people’s art/ media - eg they like watching film. They are not creative in the slightest. The term has been totally devalued. - STEM people have not stood up and said “hang on a minute!” so people do not understand STEM is all about creativity. How can you solve real problems that you haven’t seen before without being creative ?
I cannot thank you guys enough!! As an 8th grade math teacher in an inner city district, it is extremely difficult to find any math videos online that actually apply to something FUN in REAL LIFE. I was able to show this video to my students and discuss the use of mathematics that applied. THANK YOU!
This is one of the biggest reasons I've loved OkGo ever since Million Ways to be Cruel; the insane amount of work, preparation, and perseverance they put into all of their videos, taking months or even sometimes years to make them perfectly! What i want to know is how they accounted for all possible human error, because it seems like there could be a fair bit in that video.
I think if you are shooting at 550fps and playback at 30fps, and you were, say 0.1sec out of sync on the finished video, you could just drop more or less frames to suit. If you look at the original video, you can see parts where the playback speeds up or slows down to keep sync - like at around 1:06 where he says "All of this will end", "All of" is a bit faster than "this will end". And shortly after that, after the last bucket of paint explodes, you can see the paint flies through the air a bit faster so that the lip sync of "open your eyes to me" part is correct... If that makes sense...
I thought of that as well, but still, they all had to remember to sing just fragments of a line at just the right times. Not everything was perfect (like the spinning thing with Damian's face singing was sometimes a tiny bit off perfect), but everything was still really, really well coordinated, and you know they didn't just have a ton of tries like normal because of all of the things they had to blow up.
Yeah me too. They definitely have some ambitious projects! This "making of" is pretty good (th-cam.com/video/2dFdNUz2cQc/w-d-xo.html) but only like 5 mins - there is a bit of a lip sync example at about 2 mins. I think it was also shot in sections that have been stitched together to make it a bit more do-able. This video is pretty good too (th-cam.com/video/v8nc5wBl0dM/w-d-xo.html) - gives you a bit more of an appreciation of how much work went into it. Unreal clip from these guys. As usual.
Holy CRAP guys. O.o That is a huge-ass spreadsheet for one music video. But I have to say, it paid off beautifully -- The One Moment is one of my favorite music videos from you guys specifically because of all that precise timing from all that math. :D
I have no words for majority of OK GO's videos. The work, dedication and creativity is freaking outstanding. And then I'm watching the behind the scenes on these videos and it make me appreciate them even more. This one here makes me appreciate math even more. Not only does math enable us to do things like this (amongst solving millions of the problems we're faced on a daily basis), math is a platform and language that the entire world understands.
Your timing with most of your vids gives me mathgasms. The one in Japan, 'I wont let you down' is my favorite. Love your work guys and appreciate the complexity
Every video made by this band it total eye candy! They are constantly brilliant in concept and performance. It is 'art' in a form that nobody else can even come close to! Obviously I'm a HUGE fan of OK GO.
I absolutely LOVE OK Go for their always upbeat/happy style! It helps me get through the day and reminds me that things aren't ever as bad as they seem, and the bad never lasts. All their songs are about love or happiness and it always keeps me going and inspires me to devote my day to making other people feel the same way. Thank you (Also the math thing is SO cool! All the technical stuff and work that goes into you're videos, which are very much the coolest works of art I've ever seen!)
You know I watch your videos and am in awe. Then I watch the behind the scenes videos and am dumbfounded. What you do is more than art, it’s thoughtful, scientific, it’s Amazing! Thank you for bringing this to us!
I'm envious of him. He's smart, talented, dedicated, hardworking, and have the coolest job in the world. Looking forward to more projects from these guys.
When it comes to singing, the math is the easy part. Performing the vocal lines at varying speeds for the effect: HARD! Lots and lots and lots of practice. Kudos to you, Damian!
Ok Go is my favorite band. My friends complain they're gimmicky, but I give far more props to these geniusly conceived and painstakingly executed masterpieces to the boring and ordinary videos of people singing and dancing you usually see.
Now here I was thinking that you shot the video as is, and starting tweaking each shot in post to get the timings onto each beat. I didn't think it was actually frame beat perfect on a real world level. I thought 'filmed in real time' simply meant what we saw was filmed, no digital objects inserted, but was free to edit what Was filmed. This just blows my mind even more. Woah!
You guys are so rad! I've been a fan since the early days. I use to play a "million ways to be cruel" for anyone who would listen. You guys are artistic geniuses for sure!
I knew you guys were amazing talented, but I had no idea you're freaking brilliant as well! I watched with my mouth hanging open. I'm completely gobsmacked!
All of mathematics; Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus… is the gift we were given to be able to communicate with and interact with the (apparently) inanimate, invisible, and unreachable parts of our universe.
Love, love, love this. Yes, many people can go through life without having to use more than simple arithmetic, but, oh - math can be fascinating and its uses limitless.
Maybe it is because I am a programmer and have to design more complicated algorithms using less straight forward math on the daily, but props for inspiring people to go into a STEM field if they didn't know this is the kind of stuff to expect.
I tried to explain this to my kids after they watched The One Moment. They were impressed, but I don't think they really understood beyond "that's a lot of work." I'll show them this, too.
EliEscapes unfortunately you might have to add the cool insights and beauty in yourself. Just know it's always there, even if your teacher sucks. Also subscribe to some math channels on TH-cam. Numberphile, Standupmaths, Vi Hart, Mathologer, and 3Blue1Brown are all amazing. Also Khanacademy
I thought this was a new music video really zoomed in on some sand grains or something, because of the "sandbox" in the title. That would have been cool too.
According to physics objects of different (or same) mass released from the same height will travel at 9.8 m/s/s (acceleration due to gravity) and reach the ground at the same time... even if one of them is thrown horizontally. The time it takes a mass to reach the ground from a known height can be calculated, so the moment of release from different heights can be calculated... it is just math.
I always wondered what I'd need my math/science education from school for later in my life. if I ever want to work at an OK Go Set, I'll have to get better grades.
This is the type of videos teachers should show in school to inspire people about pursuing STEM
Dami Adesina Teaching STEM as a method for creative expression would solve a lot of motivation problems.
Exactly what I thought! If I was a science teacher I would show my students this video
The term “creative” has been hi jacked and sadly ring fenced largely by un creative people. I will be showing this to my stubborn 10 year old in the morning. He's good at math but it's boring. Perfect application for real life on this video.
Yes, but STEAM please
I cannot thank you guys enough!! As an 8th grade math teacher in an inner city district, it is extremely difficult to find any math videos online that actually apply to something FUN in REAL LIFE. All in all, I would *love* to see a full, in-depth behind-the-scenes video of this music video!
Yeah me too. They definitely have some ambitious projects! And if they'd spend the time on their music that they do on their videos their songs would be good
A+ for his passion to explore music, which is very mathematical, in an entertaining and profound manner. D- for his spreadsheet formatting.
Nah, I'd bump him to at least a C for spreadsheet formatting. It's not pretty, but it worked out for them ;D
Funny, I wonder where your spreadsheet that's massively popular is
@@Nannada1212 Funny, my job involves making spreadsheets. I’m literally paid for my spreadsheets. I wonder where your brain is?
Released on Nation Pi Day and the day Stephen Hawkins passed away. Seems like a fitting way to celebrate both of them.
Marc Telesha not being rude but at least get the name right. It's Stephen Hawking
And Einstein's birthday ;)
I was going to upvote but you have 123 of them which is perfect.
Holy CRAP guys. O.o That is a huge-ass spreadsheet for one music video. But I have to say, it paid off beautifully -- The One Moment is one of my favorite music videos from you guys specifically because of all that precise timing from all that math. :D
This is why I love OKGO videos, and why I love them even more. Damian really knows his stuff and I can tell by his explanation he understands it, too.
I changed my mind. I like math.
THIS is why I love this band. Perfect fusion of music, science, math, and visual art.
I have no words for majority of OK GO's videos. The work, dedication and creativity is freaking outstanding. The time and dedication they put into even the smallest of details just goes to show how much they love what they do, Thank you

Underrated band
Every video made by this band it total eye candy! They are constantly brilliant in concept and performance. It is 'art' in a form that nobody else can even come close to! Obviously I'm a HUGE fan of OK GO.
This channel posted 14 videos on the same day, this was one of them. This was the best one
I never knew math could be so satisfying
I absolutely LOVE OK Go for their always upbeat/happy style! It helps me get through the day and reminds me that things aren't ever as bad as they seem, and the bad never lasts. Thank you so much for this! Showing this to my students!!!
The efforts y'all put into your videos is astounding. You should win awards for every video you've ever made, really.
I'm envious of him. He's smart, talented, dedicated, hardworking, and have the coolest job in the world. Looking forward to more projects from these guys.
I love how you guys create these videos! You have amazing, mad skillz and creativity!
I swear you guys are so brilliant. I showed your music videos to my little cousins and they're completely in love. keep up the amazing work!
OKGO - Hands down the best music videos ever.
And here I am still trying to find x
Boy That’s Just CraZ Lol, your comment and the sad, little face in your profile go together so well! 😢😂
It's here ---> x
One of the most epic slow motion videos ever.. You guys always make the sickest stuff! thanks for showing all this crazy math and bts.. Love it
I love all of their videos, the creativity and effort they put into it is amazing !
Can't wait for the next one
This is really neat. The videos that y'all create are just incredible and I really like getting to see behind the scenes.
This is so cool (comment coming from a mathematician, college math professor, and OK Go fan). I knew there was a reason I loved all of your videos.
When it comes to singing, the math is the easy part. Performing the vocal lines at varying speeds for the effect: HARD! Lots and lots and lots of practice. Kudos to you, Damian!
I'm always trying to tell my students about all the math that goes into these videos, so this helps a ton!~ Thank you, and keep being awesome nerds!~
this is truly most professional M/V that I ever saw.
Amazing job, It's a liquid gold. ♡♡♡♡♡
Ok Go is my favorite band. My friends complain they're gimmicky, but I give far more props to these geniusly conceived and painstakingly executed masterpieces to the boring and ordinary videos of people singing and dancing you usually see.

Okgo videos are basically a substitute for math homework right
The new vsause XD
But in all seriousness, love you guys so much. You really do make the best music and music videos out there.
Beautiful. Thank you, Damian and everybody. 👏💗💗💗💗💗
I knew you guys were amazing talented, but I had no idea you're freaking brilliant as well! I watched with my mouth hanging open. I'm completely gobsmacked!
“So I built this spreadsheet”
Oh we know it’s gonna be good
I love you guys even more after this! This was the most wonderfully geeky thing I've seen this year.
I love your behind the scenes production videos! Thank you!
ugh. incredible. i love you guys so much.
It was an amazing trip, thank you.
All of mathematics; Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus… is the gift we were given to be able to communicate with and interact with the (apparently) inanimate, invisible, and unreachable parts of our universe.
I'm equally thrilled/jealous/impressed/saddened/terrified that there are ppl this smart in the world.
Love, love, love this. Yes, many people can go through life without having to use more than simple arithmetic, but, oh - math can be fascinating and its uses limitless.
Numberphile crossover when?
DOITDOITDOITDOIT
PJSproductions97 they should collab with Vi Hart too
This would be more of a Matt Parker thing
Sent this to my fellow teacher friends. Let’s see what kind of Goldberg machines come out of math classes this semester.
YAY MATH!! Thanks for this, it was a fascinating snippet into what must have been an incredibly difficult process!
~Trav
Somehow I've always known they used this kind of math to achieve the perfect timing with their single shot videos, it's insane!
Insane!! And AMAZING! The detail!
Maybe it is because I am a programmer and have to design more complicated algorithms using less straight forward math on the daily, but props for inspiring people to go into a STEM field if they didn't know this is the kind of stuff to expect.
You guys don't get enough credit for the amazing hard work
keep doing what u do i love your music and your mvs!
Damian's friends in school: "We're never going to use math in real life!"
Damian:
🏆🐐
I thoroughly enjoyed this. Looooved this!
After watching this video, I've come to only one conclusion.
We need an OK Go/Wintergatan collaboration.
Absolutely amazing
I wish I could LIKE this a hundred times. Way cool!
It’s mind blowing to me that this ever actually came into existence. 😵 it’s mind blowing.
guys you are awesome! waiting for new videos ;)
despite not being good at math I've always found it to be fun. this is cool, and shows that math is cool, yo!
You guys should have your own show on discovery!! From Russia with love:)))
The dedication.. brilliant
I love this guys ♡
Best band ever!!! Love you
This is an incredibly well put together video
Nice work man
Really appreciate it
can you guys please help with my algebra homework
Here's the quadratic formula: x=-b+-b^2-4ac/2a
that aint algebra niga
Julian Barzana they still probably know algebra better than i do lmaoooo
What are you talking about Julian? The quadratic formula is one of the elementary parts of algebra.
Magic
I tried to explain this to my kids after they watched The One Moment. They were impressed, but I don't think they really understood beyond "that's a lot of work."
I'll show them this, too.
Oh my God... u guys are genius
Love your peoples work how about 60fps at 4k. I think what might come would be wonderful. Thanks so much to you and yours
Beautiful.
This dude is a lowkey genius
Can damian be my maths teacher please i could learn so much better if i have such an amazing teacher like him
EliEscapes unfortunately you might have to add the cool insights and beauty in yourself. Just know it's always there, even if your teacher sucks.

Genius level, I love it
I thought this was a new music video really zoomed in on some sand grains or something, because of the "sandbox" in the title. That would have been cool too.
I would love to see a all-up wide shot of this taking place over the 4 seconds!
Such a talented band!
This is unbelievably cool
I'm intrigued into seeing that spreadsheet. The inner nerd in me wants to see how all that goes down
Beautiful
That spreadsheet gave me hives.
My brain as soon as it sees anything that's got to do with math:
*beeeeeep*
Your videos are absolutely amazing though, keep up the great work!
Great band, great music, great way to get people into maths.
This is awesome!
When scientist do music
He's a 'mathematician' not a scientist, otherwise we'd be watching, "One moment of Science".
You joke, but many notable scientists throughout history are talented musicians. There's a lot of overlap between science and music.
Math is science
Rosario del Pilar Music is math!
Amazing!
Salute Your work 🙇

Proving that Andy Ross attended WPI/Mass Academy.

More math! And spreadsheets!
"Math sucks"
Ok Go: Hold on, you little shit.
Wow! Damian must've been the best student in math class!
This is so cool, oh my god.
JUST. WOW.
This is so soothing...
Don't judge me
